Gharaunda MLA Harvinder Kalyan hassaid that the deplorable developments inDelhi on Republic Day have hurt the dig-nity and pride of India and its democra-cy. The tricolor was insulted in the nameof farmers, which caused disturbance anddisorder and the country and the societywill never forgive these miscreants.

MLA Kalyan strongly condemnedthe uproar and violence that took placeon the occasion of the tractor march thattook place on the auspicious occasion ofthe Republic Day celebrations in Delhi.Visions of the nation's capital on the fes-tival of recognition of the Constitutionare going to hurt the dignity of democra-cy.

Violence is like a termite in the rootsof democracy and those who are goingout of decorum are ending the legitimacyand struggle of their movement and theirdemand. He said that the leaders of thefarmers organisations taking responsibil-

ity for the tractor march have disap-peared, they should come forward andtell who are those who are committingviolence in the name of farmers and whois responsible for such an atmosphere onthe auspicious day of Republic Day?

MLA Harvinder Kalyan said that to-day the whole society wants to knowwho is disturbing the country's capital on

the Republic Day, even after the decisionto amend the laws and a stay on the threeagricultural laws for one and a half years. He said that the Red Fort of the countryis a symbol of India's honour and on thisthe Constitution has given the PrimeMinister of the country the authority tohoist the national flag. Today, the inci-dent of hoisting the flag other than the tri-color is a shame to every citizen of thecountry.

Kalyan said that the police had al-lowed the farmers to take out the tractorparade with conditions and the farmerleaders had also set some rules them-selves, but the protestors laid down allthe rules during the tractor march. Manyprotesters broke the barricades at manyplaces and forcibly entered Delhi andvandalised the city.

Anti-social elements createdviolence: TarlochanSHIV KUMAR SHARMAKARNAL: Congress district convenor Tarlochan Singh hassaid that the anti-social elements committed violence in Delhiduring the tractor parade being taken out by the farmers. It wasa well thought out conspiracy. We condemn it. There is noplace for violence. During this period, the events at the Red

Fort were done by anti-nationals.That too smells of conspiracy. Whotried to discredit the peasants? Heshould also be exposed. The DelhiPolice are also negligently responsi-ble for the developments in Delhi.Due to the negligence of Pulijas, anti-social elements were successful incarrying out their activities. Thefarmer is the provider of the country,he cannot commit violence in thisway. Farmers have always been de-vout patriots. No matter how many differences are

there within the country, all the farmers are always unitedagainst the country and anti-national forces. Farmers areabove all from all religions, caste and community. It is wrong topoint fingers at patriotism of farmers. He never saw such ascene in his forty years of his political life. There are agitations, marches, people protest but nobody tampers with the integrityand self-respect of the country. He said that a high-level inquiryshould be conducted into the developments and disturbancesat the Red Fort in Delhi. Strict action should be taken againstthose who are guilty. No action should be taken against any in-nocents in this case. Nor should action be taken from a politicalangle. He said that they are against violence in the movement. He said that such incidents could have been avoided if the ad-ministration and police had been vigilant.

Punjab Chief Minister CaptainAmarinder Singh on Thursday hitout at Union Minister PrakashJavadekar over his disgraceful anddesperate attempt to shift blame forthe shocking Red Fort violence, which had evidently been instigatedby supporters and members of hisown Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) incollusion with the Aam Aadmi Par-ty (AAP), with the Congressnowhere in the picture.

“Workers and supporters of BJPand AAP, and not the Congress, have been caught on camera wavingthe Nishan sahib at the Red Fort,”pointed out the Chief Minister in astrong retaliation to Javadekar’s un-founded allegations against theCongress, and his own governmentin Punjab. Captain Amarinder’scomments came even as Delhi Po-lice named Deep Sidhu, a key aideof BJP MP Sunny Deol, as one ofthe main instigators of the violence, and Amrik Micky, an AAP member, was also spotted at the violence site.

Not a single Congress leader ormember was seen at the Red Fort in-dulging in any kind of lawlessness,Captain Amarinder pointed out, adding that even farmers were notresponsible for the 26th January

trouble, which was in fact the doingof anti-social elements who had in-filtrated the Tractor Rally.

The Centre should also get afree and fair probe conducted intothe possible role of any politicalparty, or even a third country as isbeing alleged by BJP’s own leaders,to ensure that the guilty are pun-ished and the genuine farmers arenot unnecessarily maligned or ha-rassed, he added. The Chief Minis-ter also lashed out at the Union Min-ister for accusing Rahul Gandhi ofinciting the violence, asking “Didthe Congress leader ask anyone toclimb Red Fort? He did not. It wasBJP and AAP men who did that,” hesaid, adding that Rahul had, in fact,

promptly condemned the violence, and made it clear that violence wasno solution to the crisis.

“These allegations are nothingbut a cover-up attempt by the BJPleader for his own party’s role in theviolence, and in fact for their utterfailure to manage the situation, which they had created in the firstplace with the unilateral implemen-tation of the black Farm Laws,” saidCaptain Amarinder, trashingJavadekar’s charges. “How could Istop peaceful farmers from going totheir own national capital to exer-cise their democratic right ofprotest,” the Chief Minister furthersaid, reacting to the Union Minis-ter’s statement that the Punjab gov-

ernment failed to stop farmers fromjoining the Tractor Rally.

Violation of Corona relatedorders in Hamirpur

AGENCYHAMIRPUR, JAN 28

Though the number of newCoronavirus cases has come downand the work for the anti Coronavaccine is continuing, yet theviolation of the orders related to itis going on with impunity.

Buses, cars, jeeps and eventrolley meant for carrying labor forthe construction work are loadedbeyond capacity virtually sayinggoodbye to the social distancingorders.

Not to speak of the privatebuses, the HRTC buses are alsoseen jam packed in the morningand evening hours when peoplecome to their offices and thereafterleave for their homes.

Same is the situation in varioustowns of the district where no onebothers to stand on his turn tomake purchases of different typesof items. Buyers can be seenbreaking the lines to makepurchases and seen in a hurry toreturn to their native places.

Shops of sweets, vegetables, hotels and other eatables are themain trading centers where theviolation of the CORONA relatedorders is going on unabated.

This is surprising that all this is

going on despite the strictinstructions issued by the districtauthorities to their staff and thepeople to abide by the CORONArelated orders and thereby savethem and their families from itswrath. Gone are the days whenpeople used to completely abideby the orders of the administrationand that time it was presumed thatsuch orders will be remembered tothe people in coming days but withthe passage of the time, the ordershave become merely a ritual aseven the officialdom is also seeninvolved in ignoring the orders ofthe District Magistrate and theDistrict Police chief in this behalf.

Will the people think over thepast and restart observing thesocial distancing norms andwearing face masks for their ownwelfare and wellbeing, is a milliondollars question being debated inthe people these days.

Why is ISIS ignoring Chinese atrocitieson Uyghurs, while US terms it genocide?

The Islamic State(ISIS) has adopted a'systematic silence'

on the Xinjiang Uyghur is-sue and Chinese atrocitieson the community, said arecent commentary in theforeign policy journal Waron the Rocks.

Despite the US la-belling Chinese atrocitieson Uyghur as "genocide",terrorism experts are splitover Islamic State (ISIS) si-lence on the issue, reportedSouth China Morning Post(SCMP). Some suggest it isa strategic move, as ISISprioritises ending the USmilitary presence in theMiddle East and SouthAsia.

Maria Siow in heropinion piece in SCMPwrote that China had beencontinuously repressingUyghurs by banning longbeards and veils and settingup "concentration camps"(termed by Beijing as "re-education camps", aimed atimparting vocational skillsand rooting out extremistthoughts).

Some terrorism expertssuggest that it is a strategicmove of ISIS, which is fo-cussing on ending theAmerican military presencein the Middle East andSouth Asia, while otherssuggest that Beijing's re-pressive state apparatus andsurveillance methods in theXinjiang region have madeit too difficult for ISIS torecruit from China, report-ed SCMP.

Yet others warn the'systematic silence' as a

temporary thaw, causedperhaps by the collapse ofthe terror group's self-de-clared Caliphate defeatedby a US-led coalition atBaghuz in March 2019, re-ported SCMP.

The experts warn thatthough ISIS has weakened,it remains a potent force incommand of an estimated10,000 fighters and insur-gent cells and affiliatedgroups throughout the re-gion. In other words, itmight just be reorganising, rebuilding and biding itstime. A Middle East analystElliot Stewart noted the ter-ror group's silence in hispiece published in War onthe Rocks and he observed

that terror group had "al-most entirely ignored theplight of the Uyghurs" wasdifficult to square with its"self-appointed role as vio-lent defender of Muslimseverywhere". Stewartpointed out back in 2017that ISIS had takenprovocative steps againstChina, including producinga video featuring Uyghurforeign fighters training inIraq and pledging to shed"Chinese blood like riversto avenge the oppressed",and executing two Chineseteachers abducted in Pak-istan's southwesternBalochistan province. Butsince then the terror grouphad been silent on the Chi-

nese atrocities against theUyghurs. Stewart conclud-ed that ISIS appeared tohave abandoned the issueto prioritise its fight againstthe US. "Islamic Stateseems to have determinedthat a less provocative ap-proach to China is more ad-vantageous," he wrote.

"Specifically, the groupbelieves an unprovokedChina can play a construc-tive role in achieving anoverriding objective: end-ing the US military pres-ence in the Middle East andSouth Asia." Stewartadded: "The overriding re-ality for the Islamic State isthat the US today maintains60,000 troops in the Middle

East while China does not."The estimated 2,000

Chinese troops in Djibouti -Beijing's first overseas mil-itary base - had done littleto "alter this fundamentalimbalance", he said. "TheIslamic State further under-stands that an unprovokedChina is deeply uninterest-ed in taking on the respon-sibilities of regional securi-ty provision, even in a post-US regional order." Mean-while, Raffaello Pantucci, asenior associate fellow atthe London-based RoyalUnited Services Institute, agreed that ISIS was morefocused on getting the USout of the region but thisdid not mean that ISIS was

"strategically choosing tonot target China".

Pantucci said it waswrong to infer from the rel-ative silence that ISIS didnot support the Uyghurs.

Another possibility, said Nodirbek Soliev, asenior analyst at the Inter-national Centre for PoliticalViolence and Terrorism Re-search in Singapore's S Ra-jaratnam School of Interna-tional Studies, was thatISIS saw China as lessthreatening because it hadnot been involved in mili-tary operations against it inIraq, Syria or Afghanistan.

Soliev also pointed outthe "river of blood" video,in which ISIS leader AbuBakr al-Baghdadi in 2014singled out China as a bat-tlefield to "wage jihad forthe oppression" of theUyghurs in Xinjiang. Pro-paganda videos featuringUyghur fighters aimed atrecruiting more Uyghurspromptly followed.

But Soliev said thateven at its peak in 2014 and2015, ISIS had only a smallgroup of Uyghur fightersunder its command in Syr-ia, and since 2017, ISIS-linked Uyghur militantshad nearly disappearedfrom the online domain."Since then, there havebeen no propaganda mate-rials in the Uyghur lan-guage and Uyghur fightershave not appeared in anyother propaganda videosand photos," Soliev said, suggesting this was becausemost of them had died inbattle.

Literature & HealthChildren of depressed mothers mayexperience suicidal thoughts: Study

Study on how fat loss accelerates facial ageing

According to a recent study, children of mothers experi-encing depressive symptoms

are more at risk, as adolescents, ofexperiencing suicidal thoughts andattempting suicide. The findings ofthe study were published in the jour-nal 'Development and Psychopathol-ogy'. The research suggested that thislink may be explained by loneliness, potentially opening new ways foryouth suicide prevention. The study,by the universities of Exeter, Montre-al, Laval, and McGill, used datafrom more than 1,600 families fromthe Quebec Longitudinal Study ofChild Development, a representativesample of new-borns in Quebec fol-lowed from birth to 20 years of age.

Mothers were asked about depres-sive symptoms, such as sadness andlosing interest in formerly pleasura-ble activities at regular intervalswhile their children were aged fivemonths to seven years. The resultinginformation gave a measure of de-pressive symptoms - not a clinical di-agnosis of depression. Adolescentscompleted self-reports about suicidalthoughts and attempts at age 13-20years. Children of mothers withhigher levels of depressive symp-toms were approximately 15 per centmore likely to have suicidal thoughtsand/or attempt suicide as adolescentscompared to children of motherswith lower levels of depressivesymptoms.

In a recent study, re-searchers try to understandhow plastic surgeons treat

the signs of facial ageing. Thetraditional theory is sagging:the facial soft tissues simplyyield to the effects of gravityover time. And while the ideathat weakening ligaments inthe midface could result insoft tissue descent still hasmerit, more recent studiespoint in another direction.Perhaps the real culprit be-hind facial ageing is the lossof fat - both near the surfaceof the skin and in deeper ar-eas.

In a new study featured inthe February issue of Plasticand Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal ofthe American Society of Plas-tic Surgeons (ASPS), AaronMorgan, MD, of the MedicalCollege of Wisconsin and hiscolleagues studied 19 patientswho underwent computed to-mography (CT) scans of thehead on two occasions at leasta decade apart.

Although the patientsweren't undergoing faceliftsurgery or any other cosmeticprocedure, scans proved use-ful for measuring changes in

fat deposits in the midface -the area between the eyes andmouth - over time. The pa-tients averaged about 46years at the time of their ini-tial scan and 57 years at fol-low-up.

While the findings variedamong patients, the resultsshowed a "definite and meas-urable loss of midface fat vol-ume." The total volume of fa-cial fat decreased from about46.50 cc (cubic centimeters)at the initial scan to 40.8 cc atthe follow-up scan: a reduc-tion of about 12.2 per cent.

However, the amount ofreduction wasn't the same atall levels. Fat volume in thesuperficial compartment, justunder the skin, decreased byan average of 11.3 per cent. That compared to an average

18.4 per cent reduction in thedeep facial fat compartment.

The findings provide di-rect evidence to support the'volume loss' theory of facialageing - and may help in un-derstanding some of the spe-cific issues that lead patientsto seek facial rejuvenation."In particular, we think thatdeep facial fat loss removessupport from the overlyingfat," Dr Morgan explains.

"That causes deepeningof the nasolabial fold, whichruns from the nose to themouth. Meanwhile, fat losscloser to the surface makesthe cheeks appear deflated."

Variations in fat volumeloss can also explain ageing-related hollowing around theeyes and heaviness of thejowls.

The ongoing coronaviruspandemic has meant moretime at home for every-

one. While people have turnedto cooking, reading, among oth-er activities to deal with thehealth crisis, which brings afresh supply of stress every day,the use of social media apps hasalso spiked.

According to a recent study, the use of online messaging andsocial media apps among Singa-pore residents has spiked duringthe COVID-19 pandemic. Thestudy was led by NanyangTechnological University, Sin-gapore (NTU Singapore).

Three in four respondents(75 per cent) said that their useof WhatsApp during the pan-demic increased. This was fol-lowed by Telegram (60.3 per

cent), Facebook (60.2 per cent)and Instagram (59.7 per cent).

Accompanying this spike isvideoconferencing fatigue, found the NTU Singapore study, which surveyed 1,606 Singa-pore residents from December17 to 31 last year. Nearly one intwo Singapore residents (44 percent) said they felt drained fromvideoconferencing activities, which became more frequentduring the COVID-19 outbreak.

Some 86 per cent of the re-spondents reported that their useof videoconferencing tools in-creased during the pandemic.

The increased use of onlinecommunication tools could inpart be driven byisolation">feelings of isolation, said the researchers. Whenasked how often they felt they

lacked companionship, 35 percent of the respondents indicat-ed they have felt this way some-times, while 19 per cent felt thisway often or very often. Some32 per cent also reported feelingleft out sometimes, while 18 percent said they felt left out oftenor very often.

The nationwide online studylooking at the new normal fol-lowing the COVID-19 outbreakis commissioned by the Centrefor Information Integrity andthe Internet (IN-cube), a new re-search centre at NTU's WeeKim Wee School of Communi-cation and Information (WK-WSCI) and conducted by a lo-cal polling company.

Associate Professor EdsonC Tandoc Jr, the Director at IN-cube said, "The significant cor-

relation between the use of on-line communication tools andisolation">feelings of isolationfrom the survey results mayhelp explain why most of ourrespondents reported an in-crease in their use of onlinecommunication tools in the pastfew months, as they turn tothese tools to feel connected toothers even when physical inter-actions have to be limited.

"Social interaction throughthese online communicationtools definitely brings aboutnew challenges. Some may feelas if they are always on call atwork or among their friends.Others may be uncomfortablewith turning their cameras onduring a video call or may nothave a stable internet connec-tion.

EDITORIALReady bias: mediatrials in India

The freedom of the media cannot mean unduelicence. This message was conveyed stronglythis month by two high courts. The Delhi High

Court reportedly said that the presumption of inno-cence, a basic tenet of Indian jurisprudence, must beprotected to maintain the dignity of the courts andnot be jeopardized by the media. This came in re-sponse to a plea from Umar Khalid, detained underthe Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, whichclaimed that media reports of his alleged confessionof involvement in the Delhi riots would prejudice afair trial. He had refused to sign the supposed disclo-sure statement. The court said that the media had thepower to mobilize the thinking of numerous people;unless they discharged their duty with care and cau-tion, their biased representations could result in me-dia trials. It rebuked the media for not clarifying thatconfessions to the police are not admissible as evi-dence. Reporters should know this, and the media’sduty would be to educate people unaware of the law.It also condemned assumptions in phrases such as‘anti-Hindu riots’, since all communities had beenaffected by the violence. Media trials can be pre-vented by the media’s self-regulation, according tothe Delhi High Court. These not only go against acardinal principle of the law in a democracy, but alsohurt the dignity of the accused, thus violating theirguaranteed constitutional rights. A variant form ofthis concern, with regard to an innocent personwhose reputation can be destroyed, was stated by theBombay High Court in its scathing criticism of me-dia trials in response to public interest litigationsagainst prejudicial reporting after the death ofSushant Singh Rajput. Satiating a thirst or compet-ing against rivals cannot excuse unregulated mediatrials, the judges said in effect, and provided an ‘in-dicative but not exhaustive’ list of what reports mustnot do during an ongoing investigation. The list, ending with a warning that violating provisions ofthe programme code and other media regulationswould lead to contempt of court, is most valuablewhen much of the media seem to have surrenderedfair and meticulous reporting in favour of sensation-alism and, possibly, of pleasing certain political ele-ments. In their condemnation of medial trials, thetwo high courts have provided a stern corrective ur-gently necessary in these times.
