The board chose the museum’s café as the meeting venue as there was to be discussion concerning logistics of the Christmas bazaar and be- ing on site was extremely practical as details could be taken into consideration. The most import- ant decision the board voted in favor of unani- mously was to close the office in Ambelokipi in order to save more than 7000 Euros in expense for the organization annually. In the spring, at the urging of members, the board was asked to consider finding ways to decrease club ex- penses to keep the organization viable. As the Bulletin had already been cut down to the bare bones, the only other negotiable expense was the office. Many suggested find- ing a space that had a cheaper rent. A member had actually volunteered an off center location rent free, so long as AWOG would pay taxes, building fees, electric etc. This of course would still entail at least 3000 Euros in expense. Through the summer several options had been considered as it was recommended that most clubs in Greece do not actually rent and maintain a space but use the home office space of one of the club’s officers. Although there were several officers who volunteered, it would have required a consti- tutional amendment to move the club’s base outside the actual city limits of Athens. And this of course would require an ex- traordinary general as- sembly as well as at least 1200 Euros in legal fees. In the end, our accountant, Hlias Katsigiannis, saved the day by offering to allow AWOG to de- clare his property as AWOG’s base with NO EX- PENSE to the organization and remaining with- in all the legal parameters. Without the overhead of the office space, membership dues will be able to cover the ad- ministrative expenses of operating the organi- zation. This will allow us to continue to use a sizeable chunk of the proceeds from any future fund raising events for our charities and scholar- ship. Paring down our expenses was the obvious choice when it came to deciding whether or not we could or would continue as an organization due to our dwindling funds. We have notified the owner that we will va- cate the premises by December 31st, 2016. The limited furnishings in the office-shelves, desks and tables will be donated to any of our chari- ties that can make use of these. Club records, files, etc. will be the responsibility of each of the officers that oversee those particular functions. The appliances in the office belong to the owner. Officers have volunteered to host board of di- rector’s meetings in their homes and when that is not an option they will use central city loca- tions. Yes, we have had to lose the convenience of having “a home for AWOG” and we will have to scramble a bit when we need to call commit- tee meetings, but we will be able to continue to maintain what we do in AWOG—offer friend- ship to one another and giving to others. The AWOG Board had their first meeting for the fall season followed by a farewell luncheon hosted by US Ambassador to Greece David Pearce and our Honorary President Leyla Pearce. A produc-tive meeting at the Athens War Museum, venue for the annual Christmas Bazaar, was followed with a delicious Lebanese lunch at Jefferson House, the embassy residence. Ambassador Pearce was on hand to welcome members of AWOG. He thanked the members present for the work that AWOG does in reaching out selflessly to assist the com-munity. Table conversation turned to the peace of retiring from public life and simply going to the grocery store without orchestrating logistics. Leyla shared Lebanese spe-cialties complete with pitas, hot dips, fried eggplants, grilled meats and a delicious rice pudding. Robin Hionis, baker of beautiful cakes made yet another delicious dessert. It is nev-er easy to say good bye, especially to two such dear people, who have become ardent supporters and good friends. We wish them all the best as they re-turn stateside to retire from public service.

AWOG Heart Pillow Project donat-ed Heart Pillows at Agoi Anargyroi Hospital for mastectomy patients on July 5th. Maria Assimakopoulou and Bessie Sioutas were warmly greeted and thanked from the head of the department Dr. Simatos. The direc-tor passed on congratulations with warmth and appreciation, to all the women of AWOG for their con-tinued dedication and effort in the

The Christmas Bazaar Committee will be meeting on Thursday, October 6th at NOON in the office to finalize plans for the November 30th fundraiser. The bazaar is experiencing a major re-write. With the closing of the Athens Ledra in late May, the bazaar lost its home of many years. Fortunately, we found a new home at the Athens War Museum, a frequent and well-known host of bazaars, centrally located, just steps away from one of the main met-ro hubs—Evangelismos. The bazaar will run on Wednesday, No-vember 30th from 11 am until 7pm. If you are working on projects for the bazaar in your area, it would great if you could attend the meeting. And even if you can’t attend, do take some lottery books to sell raffle tickets to friends and family. Already some great prizes are being gathered.

Heart Pillow Stuffing Party Saturday, October 15th

October is Breast Cancer Aware-ness Month. On Saturday, Octo-ber 15th you are invited to come and stuff it. A heart pillow that is. 11:30 am in the office. The goal is to prepare another 100 pillows to deliver to the hospitals we cooperate with to dis-tribute heart pillows to mastectomy patients. The pillow itself is a tool used for both physical comfort and psycho-logical support. Placed under the arm, it cushions the arm and the chest, sensi-tive from surgery. And patients can hold the pillow in place to both comfort the physical ache and give them something to squeeze. In pretty, bright colors the pillows are made with love to of-fer support and empa-thy.

Monthly Meeting combines with Glyfada Area Meeting at Balux Café on Thursday, October 20th

In an effort to minimize ex-pense and maximize socializ-ing, this month the monthly meeting is in combination with the Glyfada Area meeting at an AWOG favorite venue: Balux

Café. The meeting will begin at 11 am. Members are not re-quired to make reservations for this gathering as once again, they will have the option to order as much or as little as they chose, setting their own budget for attending the luncheon. The intention is to max-imize the opportunity to socialize and minimize expense. Those attending can order off the menu a la carte from a cup of coffee to a full meal. It is not necessary to make a reservation.

Balux is located at: 58 Posidonos Ave. Asteras Glyfadas Complex 210 898 3577
