Bradford Apartments 23 Belew Cove Bradford 731-742-2292 1 & 2 Bedroom Apartments Now Accepting Applications Kenton woman celebrates 105th birthday A huge happy birthday to Martha Akin of Kenton, cel- ebrating her 105th birthday today (March 3). I caught up to Mrs. Akin through her youngest daughter, Carol Bowlin, also a Kenton resident, who stops by to see her mother every single day. The three of us recently gathered in Mrs. Akin’s living room for a chat. Martha Moseley Akin was born at home in Greenfield in 1915. She was the fifth of seven children born to parents Pete and Lena Elam Moseley. By the time Mrs. Akin was five years old, she’d already lost two broth- ers and her mother. For the next three years she lived with her loving maternal grandparents and at age eight she returned home to live with her father and sisters on the farm. Despite the sadness and tragedies, Mrs. Akin described her childhood as “lovely.” In 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Akin were married in Corinth, Miss., where they then boarded a train called The Tennessean, which carried them to their honeymoon destination in Chattanooga. Joe was employed by the Oak Ridge arsenal, so the couple made their home there in Oak Ridge for two years before returning to Green- field in 1947. Mr. Akin became a self- employed deliveryman of Sealtest Milk while Mrs. Akin kept the books for the business at home and reared their three children. In 1947, they wel- comed their first child Ellen, followed by Dane in 1950 and finally Carol in 1952. Mr. Akin succumbed to a massive stroke in 1970 at the age of 69. In 1971, Mrs. Akin returned to the workforce as a seamstress and clerk at Remnant House in Greenfield. She enjoyed creat- ing the garments that outfitted the mannequins in the window. Carol remembered having the pleasure of wearing some of those garments, as she was the same size as the mannequins. Later, Mrs. Akin served as assistant librarian at the Green- field Library until she was 76 years old, but she didn’t leave her sewing machine until she reached 103. Today, Mrs. Akin enjoys a quiet life in her Kenton home. She spends her days keeping up with the news, admiring her orchid blooms, working cross- word puzzles and reading any- thing she can get her hands on. She devotes time each night to reading her Bible. Although she is still a member at Green- field Church of Christ, she is no longer able to attend regularly. Mrs. Akin does her own banking, light cooking and loves drinking coffee. She has survived cancer and more recently a stroke. Mrs. Akin said that the biggest impact she’s made on anyone was encouraging her children to get college educations. Raising her children has been the hap- piest part of her life. Ellen now lives in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dane lives in Santa Cruz, Calif. Altogether, Mrs. Akin now has six grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren and five great- great-grandchildren. Trenton police look for info on drive-by The Trenton Police Depart- ment is looking for anyone with information about a Feb. 23 drive-by shooting that occurred at the corner of First and Lexing- ton streets. Lt. Jimmy Wilson said police were called about shots fired in the area around 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23. Officers saw that a vehi- cle and apartment at 113 Lexing- ton St. had been shot. They found one bullet hole in the apartment and three or four in the vehicle, which belongs to the woman in the apartment. Wilson said only one woman was home at the time of the inci- dent. She told police she was on her couch when she heard the shots. No injuries were reported. Wilson said officers found sev- eral shell casings in the street, and he believes a handgun was probably the weapon used to shoot the vehicle and apartment. He said he has spoken to a few people and gotten a couple of leads about the incident. If you have any information about the shooting, please call the Trenton Police Department at 731-855-1413. Jack’s Family Restaurant coming to Trenton The Trenton Planning Commis- sion met Thursday and approved the site plans for Jack’s Family Restaurant, which will be built at 2059 Hwy. 45 Bypass South in Trenton. St. John & Associates, Inc. out of Cullman, Ala. submit- ted the plans, which call for a 4,139 sq. ft. building that is 20 ft. high to be built on 1.177 acres of land. Plans included demoli- tion, paving, and landscaping. Landscaping includes Bermuda grass, crepe myrtles, and knock- out roses. “It’s going to be attractive,” said Danny Jones, Planning Commission member. Building Inspector Ricky Bailey said the site plans were “some of the best” he had seen. The site was formerly home to Milligan’s Landscape & Nursery. Jeff Johnson purchased it at auc- tion in late 2018. As of Thursday afternoon, no new deed had been filed with the Gibson County Register of Deeds. Bailey said there is no time- table on when construction of Jack’s would begin, but he thinks crews will get started as soon as it’s dry enough. He expects construction to move quickly, weather permitting. Gibson County News Briefs

    Kenton woman celebrates 105th birthday

A huge happy birthday to Martha Akin of Kenton, cel-ebrating her 105th birthday today (March 3).

Akin was five years old, she’d already lost two broth-ers and her mother. For the next three years she lived with her loving maternal grandparents and at age eight she returned home to live with her father and sisters on the farm. Despite the sadness and tragedies, Mrs. Akin described her childhood as “lovely.”

In 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Akin were married in Corinth, Miss., where they then boarded a train called The Tennessean, which carried them to their honeymoon destination in Chattanooga. Joe was employed by the Oak Ridge arsenal, so the couple made their home there in Oak Ridge for two years before returning to Green-field in 1947.

Mr. Akin became a self-employed deliveryman of Sealtest Milk while Mrs. Akin kept the books for the business at home and reared their three children. In 1947, they wel-comed their first child Ellen, followed by Dane in 1950 and finally Carol in 1952. Mr. Akin succumbed to a massive stroke in 1970 at the age of 69.

In 1971, Mrs. Akin returned to the workforce as a seamstress and clerk at Remnant House in Greenfield. She enjoyed creat-ing the garments that outfitted the mannequins in the window. Carol remembered having the pleasure of wearing some of those garments, as she was the same size as the mannequins. Later, Mrs. Akin served as assistant librarian at the Green-field Library until she was 76 years old, but she didn’t leave her sewing machine until she reached 103.

Today, Mrs. Akin enjoys a quiet life in her Kenton home. She spends her days keeping up with the news, admiring her orchid blooms, working cross-word puzzles and reading any-thing she can get her hands on. She devotes time each night to reading her Bible. Although she is still a member at Green-field Church of Christ, she is no longer able to attend regularly. Mrs. Akin does her own banking, light cooking and loves drinking coffee. She has survived cancer and more recently a stroke.

Mrs. Akin said that the biggest impact she’s made on anyone

was encouraging her children to get college educations. Raising her children has been the hap-piest part of her life. Ellen now lives in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dane lives in Santa Cruz, Calif. Altogether, Mrs. Akin now has six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Trenton police look for info on drive-by

The Trenton Police Depart-ment is looking for anyone with information about a Feb. 23 drive-by shooting that occurred at the corner of First and Lexing-ton streets.

Lt. Jimmy Wilson said police were called about shots fired in the area around 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23. Officers saw that a vehi-cle and apartment at 113 Lexing-ton St. had been shot. They found one bullet hole in the apartment and three or four in the vehicle, which belongs to the woman in the apartment.

Wilson said only one woman was home at the time of the inci-dent. She told police she was on her couch when she heard the shots. No injuries were reported.

Wilson said officers found sev-eral shell casings in the street, and he believes a handgun was probably the weapon used to shoot the vehicle and apartment. He said he has spoken to a few people and gotten a couple of leads about the incident.

If you have any information about the shooting, please call the Trenton Police Department at 731-855-1413.

Jack’s Family Restaurant coming to Trenton

The Trenton Planning Commis-sion met Thursday and approved the site plans for Jack’s Family Restaurant, which will be built at 2059 Hwy. 45 Bypass South in Trenton.

St. John & Associates, Inc. out of Cullman, Ala. submit-ted the plans, which call for a 4,139 sq. ft. building that is 20 ft. high to be built on 1.177 acres of land. Plans included demoli-tion, paving, and landscaping. Landscaping includes Bermuda grass, crepe myrtles, and knock-out roses.

“It’s going to be attractive,” said Danny Jones, Planning Commission member.

Building Inspector Ricky Bailey said the site plans were “some of the best” he had seen.

The site was formerly home to Milligan’s Landscape & Nursery. Jeff Johnson purchased it at auc-tion in late 2018. As of Thursday afternoon, no new deed had been filed with the Gibson County Register of Deeds.

Bailey said there is no time-table on when construction of Jack’s would begin, but he thinks crews will get started as soon as it’s dry enough. He expects construction to move quickly, weather permitting.
