Never Forget 20 years ago—September the 11th—was seared into America's memory. Nineteen men attacked us with a barbarity unequaled in our nation’s history. They murdered people of all colors, creeds, and nationalities — and made war upon the entire free world. Let us all take a moment on the 11th of this month to reflect and remember the souls lost at the hands of these cowardly, evil terrorists. Below is a prayer for those effected by the events of 09/11/2001

Lord of Mercy, Prince of Peace,

This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory. This day does not pass in the calendar without our remembering. We remember images of death and destruction. Images that human eyes were never meant to see. We remember words our ears were never meant to hear, the tender last words of husbands and wives who would never embrace again.

We imagine the feeling of emptiness in the arms of children who at the end of the day could not find mom or dad for their welcome home hug. We remember our own feelings of emptiness as our sense of security, as our own confidence in the predictable order of life and work was radically shaken.

This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory. We remember the heroism of the many that lost their lives in saving others. We remember all those who suffered and died, we grieve for them still, friends and strangers alike, along with their families and friends.

This date, 9-11, carries a heavy burden of memory. And it is right that it should not pass from our memory. But today and in this prayer, along with our remembrance of profound loss, it also seems right that we give voice to our deep longing for peace, and with this prayer, commit ourselves to those actions that will draw us closer to our most ancient and most holy desire, peace among all God’s children.

Dona nobis pacem.

Lord, grant us peace. Amen.

I know we are all a bit sad that Emmarie Gaudet is no longer with our Activties team, but she has moved up to bigger and better things as the Arbor Oaks Business Office Manager and we are so proud of her success! Plus our new Activities Assistant, Courtney Merrill, is doing an amazing job! While she is not necessarily a new face around Arbor Hills, she is new to activities and loving it so far!

Congrats!

September Activities Highlights Health Corner: Preventing Falls in Fall Prevent Falls and Fractures A simple thing can change your life—like tripping on a rug or slipping on a wet floor. If you fall, you could break a bone, like thousands of older men and women do each year. For seniors, a break can be the start of more serious problems, such as a trip to the hospital, injury, or even disability.

Many Older Adults Fear Falling The fear of falling becomes more common as people age, even among those who haven't fallen. It may lead senior to avoid activities such as walking, shopping, or taking part in social activities. But don't let a fear of falling keep you from being active. Overcoming this fear can help you stay active, maintain your physical health, and prevent future falls. Doing things like getting together with friends, gardening, walking, or going to the local senior center helps you stay healthy. The good news is, there are simple ways to prevent most falls.

Take the Right Steps to Prevent Falls If you take care of your overall health, you may be able to lower your chances of falling. Most of the time, falls and accidents don't "just happen." Here are a few tips to help you avoid falls and broken bones:

• Stay physically active. Plan an exerciseprogram that is right for you. Regularexercise improves muscles and makesyou stronger. It also helps keep yourjoints, tendons, and ligaments flexible.Mild weight- bearing activities, such aswalking or climbing stairs, may slow boneloss from osteoporosis.

• Have your eyes and hearingtested. Even small changesin sight and hearing may cause you tofall. When you get new eyeglasses orcontact lenses, take time to get used tothem. Always wear your glasses orcontacts when you need them. If youhave a hearing aid, be sure it fits well andwear it.

• Find out about the side effects of any medicineyou take. If a drug makes you sleepy or dizzy, tellyour doctor or pharmacist.

• Get enough sleep. If you are sleepy, you aremore likely to fall.

• Limit the amount of alcohol you drink. Even asmall amount of alcohol can affect your balanceand reflexes. Studies show that the rate of hipfractures in older adults increases with alcoholuse.

• Stand up slowly. Getting up too quickly cancause your blood pressure to drop. That can makeyou feel wobbly. Get your blood pressure checkedwhen lying and standing.

• Use an assistive device if you need helpfeeling steady when you walk. Appropriate useof canes and walkers can prevent falls. If yourdoctor tells you to use a cane or walker, makesure it is the right size for you and the wheels rollsmoothly. This is important when you're walking inareas you don't know well or where the walkwaysare uneven. A physical or occupational therapistcan help you decide which devices might behelpful and teach you how to use them safely.

• Be very careful when walking on wet or icysurfaces. They can be very slippery! Try to havesand or salt spread on icy areas by your front orback door.

• Wear non-skid, rubber-soled, low-heeledshoes, or lace-up shoes with non-skid solesthat fully support your feet. It is important thatthe soles are not too thin or too thick. Don't walkon stairs or floors in socks or in shoes and slipperswith smooth soles.

• Always tell your doctor if you have fallen sinceyour last checkup, even if you aren't hurt whenyou fall. A fall can alert your doctor to a newmedical problem or problems with yourmedications or eyesight that can be corrected.Your doctor may suggest physical therapy, awalking aid, or other steps to help prevent futurefalls.

“Who Am I?” Answer: Agatha Christie

Known as the “Mistress of Mystery” and the “Queen of Crime,” Agatha Christie is the author of 66 novels, most of them detective and crime stories. Almost all of her work has been adapted for radio, television, and/or feature films. Her most famous characters, Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple, continue to delight and amuse readers around the world.

Quotable Christie:

“Every murderer is probably somebody’s old friend.”

“There’s too much tendency to attribute to God the evils that man does of his own free will.”

“One doesn’t recognize the really important moments in one’s life until it’s too late.”

It’s September, but there’s plenty of warm weather left and the last major holiday of the season still to be enjoyed. Labor Day, traditionally considered the end of summer, is celebrated with parades, cookouts, and family outings. It recognizes the creation of the labor or union movement and honors the social and economic achievements of American workers.

During the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked at least 12 hours a day, seven days a week to survive. And in spite of restrictions in some states, children as young as five years old worked in factories and mills doing the same jobs as adults but earning only a fraction of adult wages. Unsafe working conditions were the order of the day. Labor unions, although still in their infancy, were becoming stronger, more vocal, and more violent. Unions were organizing strikes and rallies in protest of long hours and poor working conditions in an effort to compel employers to negotiate.

One of these rallies was destined to become the first Labor Day parade in the United States. On September 5, 1882, the Central Labor Union in New York City held a “workingmen’s holiday.” It began with a parade that included 10,000 people—all taking the day off without pay—and ended with a huge picnic in Wendel’s Elm Park, the largest park in New York City at that time. The afternoon included speeches from union leadership and live music provided by the Jewelers’ Union. Newspapers called it “a day of the people.”

Union organization and opposition continued and often erupted in violence, such as at the Haymarket Square Riot on May 4, 1886. On that day, labor unionists rallied to protest the killing of workers by Chicago police during the strike against the McCormick Reaper Works on the previous day. Seven police officers and one worker were killed during the riot, and many others were injured.

Several men were arrested and hanged, and one committed suicide. This violence helped galvanize public opinion for and against labor unions.

Labor Day was made a national holiday under President Grover Cleveland on June 28, 1894, declaring the holiday to be celebrated on the first Monday in September. Many historians view Cleveland’s enactment of the Labor Day legislation as politically motivated; the bill had been rushed through Congress and was passed unanimously by both houses just six days after the president used troops to violently break a railroad strike. Mid-term elections were to be held in 1894, and Cleveland hoped that passing the Labor Day legislation would heal his breach with the unions and benefit his party politically.

In 1989, famous labor organizer and head of the American Federation of Labor, Samuel Gompers, commented that Labor Day was “the day for which the toilers in past centuries looked forward, when their rights and their wrongs would be discussed… that the workers of our day may not only lay down their tools of labor for a holiday, but upon which they may touch shoulders in marching phalanx and feel the stronger for it.”

Do you think most people today appreciate the original meaning and purpose of Labor Day? What could be done to encourage greater understanding? Do you remember when you first started working?
