‘Barnum’ musical opens Asolo’s 50thGLENN & CAROLE SWOPEContributing [email protected]
We think of P.T. Barnum as a circus man. But when he started out, he saw himself as a salesman. He would find a person or an attraction that he thought would make some money, and sell it. He would often “purchase” an act from another flim flam artist and begin convincing people that they were seeing something spectacular.
In 1834 he “purchased” Joice Heth whom he claimed was 160 years old and was once the nurse of George Washington. He was a big advertiser and used size and color to trumpet his attractions.
The songs tell the story: “There is a Sucker Born Ev’ry Minute,” “The Colors of My Life” and “Come Follow the Band.” Barnum is bright and brash and full of fun as he makes his way in life by conning people into seeing his freaks and attractions.
Brad Oscar is a wonderful Barnum. He’s like the mas-ter of ceremonies that keeps everything and everyone moving. He makes you believe in Barnum’s power to sell
people half-truths and walk away satisfied.
Misty Cotton plays Chairy Barnum, his long-suffering wife of 50 years, but also his inspiration, his muse. When his museum burns down, she encourages him to rebuild it in her song, “One Brick at a Time.”
Renee Brna is Jenny Lind, the young Swedish singer. Brna plays Jenny with a beautiful voice. Tom Thumb, played by Nathaniel Braga, was well done. He appeared with clowns on stilts to keep the image of a very small man. The illusions on stage were perfect.
Finally we see the moving show, going to one town

“Barnum” is colorful and tells a wonderful story of someone who brought joy and color to peoples’ lives in a time when those commodities were rare.
at a time, and the circus is born. Circus Sarasota advised the acts, and real circus performers, including a high wire act, appeared on the stage. It is colorful and tells a wonderful story of someone who brought joy and color to peoples’ lives in a time when those commodities were rare.
The circus band on stage was excellent and included brass, reeds and percussion. The transitions from scene to scene were well done, often because of the on-stage band lending continuity.
Written by Cy Coleman, Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, Barnum was produced in cooperation with the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Jupiter, Fla. The director is Gordon Greenberg. “Barnum” is a great show for the holidays. It plays through Dec. 20. For tickets, call 351-9010.
