Lady Panthers to Face Holliday in Area Finals Thursday at Glen Rose

Panthers Prepare for State Ranked and District 5-2A Champion Holliday.

The Lady Panthers, runners-up in District 8-AA, will play Holliday in Area round competition on Thursday, November 4, in Glen Rose at 7:00 PM. The Eagles of Holliday are champions of District 5-AA. They are 28—9 on the year, and have been perennially ranked in the state’s Top 20. Head Coach Amy Hackebeil is optimistic on the team’s chances. “We are thankful that our district was so competitive; it will be a great advantage in the playoffs. We have had to play some very close matches under great pressure. Hopefully, this experience will pay off down the road.” The Lady Panthers will play a warm-up game in Canyon Lake this afternoon at 4:30 PM. “We want to get better every game, becoming more aggres-sive and effective at the net with each play.” Senior Tara Tredaway said, “I am proud of how far we have come. I feel we have really lived up to our slogan, AHNH, All Heart No Height!” I feel with the heart, desire, and fire we have, we can truly go farther than we ever have in the playoffs. I am so proud of our team this year. And, I am so grateful to be blessed with a coach that could truly bring us together and that can prepare us for anything we come across in the playoffs.” “ALL HEART NO HEIGHT!”

The Blanco Panthers travel to Lago Vista tonight to take on District 13-AA’s only undefeated ballclub. “Lago Vista is the opponent this week and they have an out-standing team,” said Head Coach Danny Rogers. “They are a run dominating team, but can hit you with the deep pass also.” The Vikings are led by JeMarcus Johnson, who is the leading rusher and receiver on the team. The Baylor-bound senior rushed for 131 yards and two TDs in Lago’s 46—20 win last week against Marion. He also caught three passes for 30 yards. The Vikings racked up 410 yards rushing on the night. Defensively, the Vikings are led by defensive end Austin Terry, who has committed to play at TCU. “They are big and physical, and one of the top teams in Re-gion 4 this year,” said Rogers. The Panthers are currently in a tie with Luling for second place in the district, after losing last week’s game at Comfort 25—20. According to Rogers, the Panthers are still in a position to control their own destiny. “A win this week and next week would make us District champions.” “We will give it our best the next two weeks and hopefully that will be good enough to get us in the playoffs”

***PARKING INFORMATION AT LAGO VISTA*** The following information was received from Lago Vista: Parking in and around the stadium is extremely limited. The best option is to park on the left/north side of 1431 in a deserted shopping center parking lot. Lago Vista will shut-tle a bus to take fans to the game and drop them off at the front gate.

Not much is known about Holliday’s volleyball team. Coach Hackebeil

and Coach Mumme will scout them at a warm-up game tomorrow in Decatur. This picture of the team

The Blanco High School Debate team captured the sweep-stakes championship at the Lampasas Speech and Debate Tour-nament held on Saturday, October 23. Fifteen schools entered the tournament. “The Lampasas tournament was a big win for the team,” said LD third place finisher Maegan Wilson. “We won sweepstakes without having entries in interpretation or extemporaneous speaking.” LD debater Samantha Primeaux said, “Our LD and CX de-baters were amazing at the tournament. Even though we did well, we still have room for improvement for the La Vernia tournament in two weeks.”

The Panther Cross Country teams competed at the District 8-AA meet last Wednesday in Junction, and freshman Meaghan Seales came out as the school’s only Regional qualifier with a 9th place finish. “There were some good schools there, and some fast run-ners,” said Coach Stuart Schultz. “We’re real proud of Meaghan. The Regional competition will be held in Lubbock on No-vember 6, the same day that Missouri will be in town to play the Red Raiders. Early reports are that rooms are hard to get. In the middle school division, 7th grader Bret Nance won second place, and 8th grader Kari Graham won 7th place. “We’ll be looking to do better next year,” said Schultz. “We’ll have several people coming back.”

Abbey Weaver Attends World Class Pole Vault Clinic Trains with Vitali Petrov, Coach of World Champion Pole Vaulters Sergey Bubka and Yelena Isinbayeva

Abbey Weaver with Coach Vitali Petrov.

“Hear Ye, Hear Ye!”

Blanco High School junior Abbey Weaver recently attended a pole vault camp run by world renowned coach Vitali Petrov. “I learned a lot,” said Weaver, who last year garnered a third-place finish in the event at the UIL State Track and Field Meet. Petrov’s coaching pupils include the two top recognized pole

vaulters in the world: men’s world record holder Sergy Bubka (20’ 2”), and women’s world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva (16’ 7”). According to Blanco pole vault coach Scott Balmos, the clinic goes hand in hand with the coaching she’s receiving at Blanco High School. “I have used the Petrov model to teach pole vaulting to all our athletes since I started coaching the pole vault in 1996,” he said. “I learned to pole vault watching Bubka and others that Petrov coached, and using his Petrov with World Champion

Yelena Isinbayeva.

technique I jumped 15’ in high school. He is the godfather of modern pole vaulting!” According to Weaver, she learned things to help her in her technique. “I learned improvements in my technique of running down the runway, the timing on my plant, my hand placement, the height of my knees as I run down the runway, and the best position to hold the pole.” She has also set her goals high. “I want to try to get 12’ this year. I went 11’ 6” last year, and 10’ 6” as a freshman. If I can get to 12’, colleges will be looking at me.” Coach Balmos said, “Abbey is one of very few girls that has the athletic ability and the technique to vault over 12’, and maybe even 12’ 6” or 13’ by the time she’s a senior.” “If she will continue to work, learn, and listen she could be our first state champion in a very long time, maybe the only girl state champion in Blanco school his-tory.”
