“Dreaming of Horses”Hello all of you fellow horse lovers,I know you are a horse lover or you wouldn’t be reading this publication. Let’s take a moment to reflect upon how privileged we are to share our life with a four legged creature called the horse. In this crazy busy life that you are living, just take a pause to think about what you have been given. Lots of folks only dream of owning a horse, some dream all of their life. So if you are one of the lucky few, living that DREAM, don’t take it for granted. Grab a chance to feel ALIVE, feel the exhilaration of a flat out gallop across the meadow (gopher hole free of course) feel your eyes blur as you race with the wind, the flat out belly laugh between friends that have raced down that favorite “ cantering place” and the rush of it all. That’s what I’m talking about, good, honest, horse loving, FUN.As the year goes on, I want to take you on some really cool journeys and strive to make you feel alive, even just for a moment, as you read mystory. I also know that horses have been given to us to be stress relievers, and in that fact, I am a believer. That is why I always want to help othersmake their time with horses count. It doesn’t matter what type of horse you ride, or what type of saddle you sit in, the feeling of being up on theback of a living animal is close to being magical. As a child most of us started that journey by reading books, and then our imagination took over. We peeled our eyes as we rode the school bus, looking for a good cantering spot. I can still remember feeling the motion of a good long gallop across grassy fields as the bus rolled along. Still others began their riding journey as teenagers, taking lessons at the local riding stable, then eventually graduating to stall cleaning and trading barn work for riding “ the better horses” at the barn. Maybe you were lucky enough to talkyour parents into buying or leasing you a horse, or like me, babysitting and cleaning houses to buy my first horse, then gladly doing hours of barn work to trade for board. I can still hear mom say “you would rather spend time at the barn than with your own family.” And yes, she was right again. I spent lots of summer days hanging out at the barn, going to fairs and dreading the start of school because that meant less time at the barn. Once in a while, napping in the wheelbarrow in the warm sun light, hanging out at listing to the horses munch their hay, blowing out the chaff and slurping water, stomping flies, filing reminiscent noises that comfort those who love horses. These days, I spend hours with middle aged horse lovers who always wanted horses as a kid, or rode a little as a teen, but because of life, have never had a chance till now to cultivate that passion of horsedom. Yes that is my word, horse- dom, kind of like kingdom, a realm of activity in which horses dominate. I encourage dreaming, not giving up, not getting discouraged, not worrying about what others think of you. Encourage the positive, reduce the negative and strive to be your personal best. Live life to the fullest: dare to dream.Surely I am not the only one who has had these memories. As we get older and gravity catches up, the rides seem more fleeting, and the daily grind takes over. Make time to take chances, spend time at the barn, get that funny “smell” that most spouses just don’t understand. Take time to hang out with friends, risk being called a horse freak, ask for chaps or a saddle instead of diamonds and flowers. As 2012 begins, don’t waste any more time. Please feel free to contact me about this and future articles.

And more, the full scope of this technology has yet to be realized. Remember, with or without symptoms any animal that shows pathological

“reads” during a VOM treatment has nervous interference at that spinal segment. VOM can reduce and often times resolve this interference

thus inducing healing.

Q: I would like to blanket my horse for pasture turnout but, am not sure how to get started. Can you help? --S.E.

A: Blanketing horses during turnout has become increasingly popular given some of the excellent products on the market today. Turnout blankets are different than Stable blankets in that there is usually no back seam in the construction. This keeps the blanket in place while your horse runs, kicks or rolls during play. They are generally made of tough materials that will repel rain and mud while allowing the fabric to ‘breathe’ with temperature fluctuations. There are 2 basic terms to know when purchasing a turnout blanket for the first time: Fill and Denier. “Fill” is the amount of insulation in the blanket and “Denier” defines the strength of the exterior fabric or shell. The bigger the numbers the stronger the fabric or the more insulation a blanketwill have. Some considerations for the amount of fill or denier your horse will need is the density of their winter hair coat, the possibility for damage or the pasture climate. It is often suggested to have lighter turnout blankets for the spring or fall and to trade off for heavier blankets when temperatures fall below freezing. If having multiple blankets is not possible, consider layering during the colder weather with a blanket liner designed for under a turnout blanket. Correct fit will insure the safety of your horse while being blanketed outside. Not all blankets will fit your horse the same way. Size is usually determined by the length of your horse from the point of their shoulder to the point of their hip. Width can also be a factor in fit but, is a little harder to determine based on product details. If you don’t know, consider an open front style with adjustable shoulder length and pleated or stretch gussets to give your horse adequate chest and shoulder room. Routine maintenance of the turnout blanket usuallyinvolves hosing off the outer shell. A stiff brush or shop vac also works great to remove dirt and mud. Periodic machine washing is recommended andspecial detergents are available to insure that the blanket remains weatherproof.
