Painting with a reference image

HOW TO USE A REFERENCE IMAGE TO HELP YOU PAINTING ON A CANVAS !!PhotoDonut allows you to paint your own painting with a little help: by using a Reference Image or a Cloning

Source.  !Open PhotoDonut and load the image that you want to use as your reference image:

!In the Settings pane, open the Clone Mode, Visual Guides and Canvas parts. Make sure your settings are as

follows in each of the 3 parts: !Clone Mode: Choose Clone (continous) so that the color of the painting will respect the original image's colors -

since the original image is chosen to be the Visual Guide.  !Visual Guides: Choose Clone Source (or Reference Image) - in our example, both of these are the same default

image. Adjust the guide’s opacity by moving the slider.  In this tutorial, we have selected a Grayscale Cloning

Source, but you can also chose to view only the Outlines or the Color Image.  !Canvas: Choose Color. Set the color of your canvas: by clicking on the Color browser. You can choose the color

you want in different ways: use the classic color-wheel, the HSV color Space or the Color Names list. Or you can

keep the default white canvas. (See “Painting without a reference image” tutorial for more information on the

Color Browser). Then press OK.  !

Select the brushes you want to use and start painting/drawing. We chose to draw first with ‘Pencil/Black Sketch’ ,

and later we added a little ‘Tobacco Sketch’ from the same Pencil brush category.  !!!Note: You can check how your painting/drawing is changing by switching back to the Compositing view, or by

simply deactivating the Reference Image, which means set the Visual Guides to OFF.  If you do not like the

result, you can use the Undo button to delete the last strokes as many times as you made changes in the

settings. You have an unlimited number of undo steps that you can revert back to. !Switch back to the Compositing view to see the final result: !Tip: Add a ‘Texturizer’ filter after the ‘Freehand Painting Module’ filter to give a more realistic effect to your

creation.
