hair & fashionFrom January through until 24th February – salons will have an opportunity to enter the Mizani Catwalk Award which takes place in July as part of the L’Oreal Colour Trophy Grand Final that began in 1956. The Mizani Catwalk Award section was introduced in 2009 to inspire exquisite colour and style, on models of African and African Caribbean descent.

2011’s award was won by CUTTING ROOM CREATIVE Salon from Leeds. This year over, 1200 photographic entries are expected to pour into the L’Oréal Colour Trophy offices where just 429 salons will make it through to the final. In May a powerhouse team of six renowned salons will be selected to go head to head at the L’Oréal Academy in London. It’s an intense live final that explodes creative talent in every direction. Each team will be pushed to create their own look on a model of African / Caribbean descent that encapsulates their knowledge of Aut/Win trends, infused with beautiful make-up and a fashion led style, excellent colour and precision cutting skills.

To win the Mazani Catwalk means that the team will get global recognition and an exciting prize package that includes a cover and photo shoot in a leading magazine, alongside numerous PR all designed to help to boost the salons profile. One of the Judges is renowned stylist Errol Douglas, MBE who believes that the competition is getting stronger every year, he commented “The 2011 Mizani Afro Catwalk Award winners, Cutting Crew creative from Leeds, demonstrated an amazing execution of on-trend colour, their direction was accurate and worked flawlessly with the models skin tone and eyes, the total look incorporated strong fashion influences and was a fantastic example of beautiful, wearable overall look.”

Celebrity presenter Sara Cox & acclaimed Afro hairdresser Errol Douglas MBE presented the team from Cutting Room Creative with theiresteemed award.

PAKSMAG 10

From the tender age of six our special Pak’s interviewee, Chyna Soulstar has been performing at various ‘Sound-clashes’ and music festivals around the UK. At 18 Chyna went solo, emerging as a young energetic Hip-Hop soulstress who was taking her career to new levels working with DJ’s and music producers like Trevor Nelson, Karen Wheeler (famed for Soul II Soul) and award winning singer Craig David.

Walking through the Wood Green Shopping City on a Saturday afternoon with her mum in tow, looking casual and relaxed, the hardworking musician who had just left the studio where she had been working on her soon to be released album, takes a double-take turn at the new Pak’s shop and pops in for a catch-up. Chyna tells me some news about her new album - “I am versatile with my music and really like the House/Dance vibe, but staying true to my roots is the fusion sounds of Hip Hop and reggae which my new single ‘Kiss of Jah Truth’ will feature, alongside some home hitting messages that you will want to listen to again and again”.

Turning the conversation to hair and fashion - “Anything short, slick, rock chic vibe grabs me” explains Chyna - who has also just become a mummy “but kit me out with a hairbrush, Pink Oil Moisturiser Design Control Gel, some mascara and maybe an eye pencil and I am good to go”.

Look out for Chyna Soulstar’s new single, due to be released Spring of 2012.

KINKY,CURLYhits EuropePeter Mudahy explores the curl revolution

From London to Paris, ladies from all backgrounds with naturally curly hair are opting for that kinky, curly, wavy texture.

“It’s a revolution” screams one lady I met while at a hair show in Paris; who also revealed she treated her hair to a product called ‘custard’ before she twisted it and used her fingers to “rake it” loose. “Don’t comb it or brush it” she explains, with a self-pleasing expression of French-style English.

In the US, the ‘revolution’ of defining your natural curls is already in full swing, with celebrities like Solange Knowles and Alicia Keys naturally sporting that just woken-up-style of curls us guys wow over in a hot chic movie.

Cashing in on the product side is a line-up of ranges ready to be categorised for a multi-cultural, kinky, curly sector of the hair market. With products like Hair Milk, Custard and Pudding; next we will be calling conditioners “pie and mash”. But wait,

news in from the US is that even more curl products are on their way to the European market. Get a sneak peak at Mixed Roots which sources close to Pak’s tells us is due to arrive in the UK in April 2012.

The key however to a good curl product is its ability to interact with the hair’s natural magnetic reactions and remain moist. A chain of molecules held together by electro (don’t get too confused), we are not going to plug you in to the wall socket, however on straight hair the charges are +/- all the way down, with curly hair the charges are +/+ or -/- and the same way two magnets pull or push away from each other, is the same way the ‘S’shape in your curls work.

Products like Curls, Cashmere Curl Jelly uses cashmere extracts, organics aloe leaf juice and coconut water to repair damaged hair and control frizz. Water is also a natural moisturiser but as we know, water is prone to drying out the hair.

Root2Tip – Kinki Coili Kurli, Honey Rain Juice, (£8.99). Leave in conditioner which claims to be 95% natural and a squeezable pump action that means not having to squeeze dollops of product in to your hands.

Curls – Curl Ecstasy Hair Tea Conditioner (£12.99). A Youtube favourite is the Curls range with unbelievable moisture. We tried out this sulphate free conditioner, infused with botanical extracts which was great, fresh, soft curls.

Taliah Waajid – Curly, Curl Cream (around £4.99). Promising to define your curl shape and made with Shea Butter.

Mazuri Organics – Texturizing Hair MUD – (£3.99). A little more on the affordable side and one of the very few Afro products available from ASDA. Mazuri Organics Hair MUD is packed with olive oil and great with both curly and wavy hair.

Gel’s Super hold

NEW Dark N Lovely

Naat BRAZILIAN KERATIN, Liquid Keratin Leave-In Reconstructor (£27.99) At first the price rang alarm bells but when I researched this product and tried it on my hair, WOW! There is a lot of excitement these days over “so-called” Brazilian hair and hair products but while this Nunaat product is made in Brazil, it is not available in Brazil and that is because Nunaat, just so happens to be one of the largest suppliers of the ingredients other brands use. And so, why go for seconds when here in the UK you can have the real thing. But where I went wrong is the price. Like a real ‘Charlie’ I picked up the Salon Professional box kit (£370) that allows 6-8 application and has a higher concentration of hyrolyzed soy, corn and wheat proteins than the everyday consumer treatment. For my hair which is well over processed with colour, relaxer and Pak’s website of hair products.... I instantly felt the difference of stronger, healthier hair.

Bye-Bye breakage, say hello to new Dark and Lovely Anti-Breakage made with ceramide to reinforce weak spots on your hair and wheat germ oil for rich moisture. The range features a No Lye relaxer kit, healing treatment, hair butter and oil moisturiser. Dark and Lovely have used technology to bring you a range with potentially 10 times less breakage.

Flip it, Trick it, Land it... Tag your hair with the NEW Extreme Hold PINHEAD Hair Styling Gel (£4.99 240ml) which comes in Watermelon, Bubble Gum and Berry scents.

NEW My Hair and Beauty Shop opens on Stroud Green Road in London N4. The up-market salon for professional brands like Tigi, Paul Mitchell and Mizani expanded its retail shop last December. It is well worth a visit for the latest must have products. Check out the range online www.myhairandbeauty.co.uk

NEW - ROOT2TIP – Kinki Coili Kurli Vanilla-Sun Twurly Butter Cream for the younger more difficult to manage hair. Made with natural ingredients like aloe vera, olive oil and shea, this product softens the hair and helps to detangle tight curls that often have our children hiding the comb or running for cover!

NEW FOR CHILDREN

At One Kids – The perfect combination for the winter months; try washing with Hydrating Shampoo with Moroccan Oil (£2.49) and then At One Kids, Olive Oil & Shea Butter Creme Conditioner (£2.99) for controlling breakage and shedding. Apply while plaiting and to the scalp.

Discover Wav and Evolve Boar brushes. One of the secrets in hair care is brushing your hair with natural boar, not only do the firm bristles smoothes the hair, but it also helps to redistribute the natural oil on the scalp to the hair and cleanse. Unlike nylon bristle which can damage the hair, boar is well known for being friendly to hair.

CREAM FACIAL CLEANSERSoaps and facial washes strip away moisture when removing make-up, with the dryness of winter air the problem magnifies. Try a Hollywood Style Dual Action Face Wash, 100% soap free it cleanses and moistures at the same time without drying the skin.

MASK IT! A moisturising facial mask will replenish moisture lost from standing in the winter air, so when you get some spare time treat yourself to a Mineral Clay Mask with avocado, kiwi and wild berry.

HYDRATE YOU SKIN NEW to the skin care market in Clear Sensation from Paris… I hear a lot of good reviews about this range and it’s anticipated launch has been well overdue. With 7 key benefits paraben free made with argan oil it promises to nourish, hydrate and tone.

BERRY FRAGRANCEWith Valentine’s around the corner, BE MY WISH berry fragrance (£8.49) from Victoria’s Secret is a must, and if by chance the velvet plum and white raspberry scent isn’t enough to sparkle your partners fantasies try WE A KISS, GIVE ME LOVE

POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANTSPalmer’s has re-introduced the nation’s favourite cocoa-butter lotion in a “limited edition” pink bottle with an increased donation of 30p from the sale of each bottle going directly towards supporting women and men affected by breast cancer. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Lotion is a creamy emollient moisturiser made of pure cocoa butter enriched with the powerful antioxidant Vitamin E. This best selling, fast absorbing moisturiser nourishes even the driest skin.

LIP GLOSSI always tell my clients to drink extra water when it’s cold and windy. Your hands, feet, knees and elbows help appreciate the moisture, but for the lips help to heal painful cracks with a product containing shea butter, mineral oil, and tea tree oil.

Colourful expressions

wigs

Talented hairdressers will know one way to attract attention is to throw in some colour. Take an artist like Nicki Minaj, it is not just the eccentric outfits but it is the hair to match.

PAKSMAG 18

ADD MINAJ-COLOUR THIS AUTUMNNicki Minaj gets an awful lot of attention. The craaaaazy outfits, super bright make up and her voluntious curvy body have us begging for more. But it’s Nicki’s extensive and increasingly quirky hair that really gets us excited. If you quite fancy having a candy floss Marge Simpson on your own hair, then why not try a little fun with berry coloured wigs from Paks? Manva, from Pink Scissors salon in Tufnel Park, London N7 is all about influencing celebrity styles and says: “Sometimes it is surprisingly easy to dye a blonde wig if you can’t find the ‘berry’ colour wig you really want. Creating undertones of pink and lilac or even red, however, on the same wig this requires a little professional skill and that’s when you pay me a visit at my salon”.

Our resident hair doc Wayne Shorter-Campbell from THE HOUSE of RUSH salon in Piccadilly Circus joins us again with his expert advice and predictions on hair.

We are doing a lot in the salon with Berry Coloured hair, influenced by pop-stars and celebrities. Paks carries a range of Berry Colour products like Crazy Colour that offer up the

tools to do the job on your hair, but if you are a little less adventurous or want to try out a little colour for a night, then Sensantionnel have recently added Gold, Baby Pink, Lilac, Mix Blue and Mix Pink to their already popular Soft ‘N’Silk Hot Clips range which clip in and clip out.

TOP 3 TIPS FOR USING COLOURED HAIR EXTENSIONS1. Use a conditioner for colour-treated hair each time you shampoo.2. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun.3. Limit your use of heated appliances such as straighteners and tongs and wrap hair at night for your desired look. For advice on hair care, tips plus do’s and don’ts email Wayne at [email protected] and you can also catch him on www.wayneshortercampbell.blogspot.com
