Specialist Palliative Care Services offer a range of educational opportunities. Outlined below are dates and details of our regular
educational events. Within NHS Tayside details of the programme can also be found on the Palliative Care Education Unit page on

In addition to the events in this programme we also provide individual study days and educational events for specific clinical areas.

Refreshments
There are canteen facilities available at the Royal Victoria Hospital site but take into account walking distance
(approx 5 mins) or you can bring your own lunch. Coffee and tea is available at 50p per cup, (correct change
only).
Cost
All courses are free to attend with the exception of the Academic Accreditation by the University of Dundee.
The cost for accreditation is £136.00
Cancellations
Failure to give notice to cancel your place on any of the courses once booked, will incur a £25 charge per head
for non-attendance or a no-show on the day, barring exceptional circumstances.

Introductory Visit to Specialist Palliative Care Services Dundee
Delivered by Macmillan Day Care Team
This 2 hour morning visit offers participants the
opportunity to find out more about the philosophy of
palliative care, components of the service and the work of
the multi professional team.
The sessions are open to any health or social care staff.
The session will include a presentation, tour of the
facilities and opportunity for questions.

Health & Social Care Support Workers : Day One – Introduction to Palliative Care
This one day course provides an introduction to the principles and practice of palliative care. It will develop understanding of the needs of people with life limiting illness. Key Themes Discussed:

Health & Social Care Support Workers : Day Two – Next Steps
This one day course provides an opportunity to further explore the care of people with palliative care needs and the role of the Health Care Support Worker within their care. The day builds on from day one to consider managing symptoms and providing support to individuals with life-limiting illness. Key Themes discussed:

Health & Social Care Support Workers : Care of the Dying and the Bereaved
This 1 day course will enable front line Health and Social
Care Support Workers to gain confidence and skills in
caring for dying patients. The course will discuss and
rationalise key priorities of care and goal expectations in
respect to dying. The course will embed the importance of
key communication techniques to support grieving and
bereaved people.

Health & Social Care Support Workers: Management of Swollen Limbs.
This course will be delivered by our Macmillan
Lymphoedema Specialist Nurse, Claire Hastie and aims to
support non Registered Health and Social Care Support
Workers gain skills and awareness in all aspects of
chronic oedema.

Health & Social Care Support Workers: Achieving Good End of life Care
for People Living with Dementia
The aim of this study day is to identify the importance
of embedding a palliative care approach within this
illness trajectory, from diagnosis through to end of life
care. The programme promotes good end of life care for
the person, and ongoing support for carers and
families.
The training aligns to key learning competencies
identified within the Dementia Education Framework -
“Promoting Excellence” – Dementia Informed Practice

Registered Practitioners: Symptom Management in Palliative Care
The aim of this course is to be able to identify people who would benefit from a palliative approach to care. To explore the management of the common symptoms in palliative care patients. This course is held over three full days. The course is aimed at Registered Health and Social Care Professionals, and is delivered by members of the multi professional team. Participants on these courses are predominantly nurses but other healthcare professionals can apply. This course can be undertaken for continuing
professional development (CPD) or for academic credit.
This module has been awarded 15 points at SCQF level
9 (degree level) by the School Of Nursing and Health
Sciences part of University of Dundee. For further

This course will explore communication issues when working with people with palliative care needs and their families. The course is aimed at Registered Health and Social Care Professionals, and would be appropriate for those with KSF communication level 2/3 in their post outline. This course is held over two full days. Participants on these courses are predominantly nurses but other healthcare professionals can apply. The course can be undertaken for continuing

“Its Good to Listen”: Advanced Communication Skills in Palliative and
End of Life Care
This 3 day course provides experienced health care professionals with an opportunity to undertake an evidence-based experiential communication skills course. The course will allow them to explore the psychological needs of people and their families, and to respond to the communication challenges they may encounter. It will be helpful to have undertaken previous communication skills training. This course is aimed at experienced Registered Health and Social Care Professionals, and would be appropriate for those with KSF communication level 3/4 in their post outline. Content will be developed from the group’s agenda. Places for this course are considered following receipt of an individual application. Commitment to all three

This interactive session will be delivered by
Macmillan Lymphoedema Specialist Nurse Claire
Hastie. The session aims to give registered

Registered Practitioners: Dementia & Palliative Care
This session is run in collaboration with both Mental
health and Specialist Palliative Care Services.
The course aims to give an overview of the complexity
of dementia with a focus on palliative care.

direction of dementia care
Person centered care and dignity
Frailty and the older person
Legal aspects
Communication challenges / stress and
distressed responses
Palliative and end of life care
Participating practitioners will be required to seek
manager approval to assure attendance at all three
allocated study events. Participants will be required to
participate in a service improvement exercise to
consolidate and evidence learning from the course.

Children, grief and coping
The aim of this workshop is to raise awareness of issues relating to children who are grieving. The session is open to all Health & Social Care Professionals who come into contact with children and their families who are dealing with the effects of serious illness and loss. Key learning Themes:

Nursing updates – Delivered by Dundee Community Macmillan Nursing

Registered Practitioners: Syringe driver updates
This afternoon workshop provides an update on the use of a T34 syringe driver within a palliative care context. The session predominately focuses on the drugs most commonly used within the syringe driver. You will be required to complete an online training package prior to attending the workshop which supports learning in respect to the mechanical function of the T34 Syringe driver. Information for Academic Accreditation awarded by the University of Dundee Both the Symptom Management and Communication Issues courses have been awarded academic credit, 15 points at SQCF Level 9. These points can be used towards a nursing degree programme at the University. The modules have been designed to be flexible and various options are available to you. For example if you wanted to study one module per semester you can do so; this may be particularly appealing if you have not undertaken any academic study for a significant period of time. Or you can study both modules over one semester, giving you a total of 30 points in one semester. Each module requires you to attend the face to face study days and additional learning is undertaken online via the virtual learning environment provided by the University of Dundee. To be awarded the academic credit you will have to successfully complete an academic assessment which requires you to submit an essay of 2500 words for each module. The cost for accreditation is £136.
