ABATE of Florida, Inc. Mission Statement WHO WE ARE We are a non-profit organization of motorcycle enthusiasts from all walks of life. We lobby and educate the government and the general public to promote motorcycling in a safe and positive image. We endeavor to enlist the cooperation and participation of all organizations and individuals that share a similar interest in preserving our American tradition of FREEDOM. We promote motorcycle safety, training, & political awareness. We ARE NOT A CLUB NOR A GANG. We fund our work through events, toy runs, poker runs, campouts, and other motorcycle activities. We are your neighbors & friends who work, pay taxes, and get involved with our community. We serve and support our country and believe in freedom. We use all legal means to protect our rights without infringing on the rights of others. We are Pro-choice NOT anti– helmet

OUR GOALS

To become a powerful and viable political force in legislative matters concerning the motorcyclist. To promote the safe riding habits without infringing on individual freedoms. To motivate the bikers to write letters to legislators before, during, and after the legislative session. To furnish a newsletter to keep all bikers informed in regards to upcoming legislation.

MEMBERSHIP When you become a member of ABATE OF FLORIDA, INC. you are helping make a difference in the ongoing mis-sion to protect your right to ride and enjoy the motorcycle of your choice, your choice of riding apparel, and when and where you can ride a motorcycle. These are issues that are real and present in today’s “protect yourself from yourself” political environment. This holds true for all levels of government. There will always be those who see our love for motorcycling as a negative and will try any means to control and if possible prohibit motorcycle use. On the local level our members get out the vote and support candidates who are sympathetic to our issues. We also will endeavor to lobby local governments whenever there are issues that need to be addressed, affecting local motorcycle use, ownership, and any discrimination that may result from said use of ownership. At the state level we have a paid registered lobbyist who regularly visits our state capital in Tallahassee to lobby our legislators on the issues concerning the motorcycling public in Florida. He also finds reliable House and Senate sponsors for the bills we support. On the national level we are aligned with Motorcycle Riders Foundations (MRF), and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), along with several other international motorcycle rights organizations (MRO’s). As one can see we have our ear to the ground and our resolve tempered like steel. As Americans we have had it demonstrated to us time and again the vigilance is armor of free men and women. We shall not let the armor rust or weaken. With your support we can re-enforce and strengthen the armor for now and generations to come. What else do you get with your membership? All members receive with their paid membership, the Masterlink Newsletter, Membership Card, Event Discounts and Updates, Voting Privileges, Free Masterlink Classified Advertisements, a Chapter Newsletter, and a free $4,000 Accidental Death or Dismemberment Insurance Policy from the American Income Life Insurance Company. Memberships are open to anyone 18 years of age or older, no matter what type of motorcycle you ride, if any at all! We welcome all riders—in clubs, associations, independents, and sport riders to join us.

President’s Message

Ken “Snooze” Gerecke

Well it’s February already and you know what that means, that’s right Bike Week in Daytona Beach will be here before we know it. So start making your plans to camp with your chapter now!! Don’t stay in some over priced hotel room stay with your chapter! This year we will be staying at the former Abate campground in Deland where we have had many good times before. This year is the 75th anniversaries of Bike Week in Daytona so there are bound to be some extra added festivities. Can’t wait, I am hoping a lot of our members are planning on it this year it is always a good time. Also chapter board nominations are coming up in April. I hope some of you are thinking of stepping up for one of these very important positions on our board of directors. These jobs are really not that difficult and can actually be fun and rewarding at times. So please think about it or at least nominate someone else of your choice. We are in dire need of a assistant safety director to help tippy out when he is not able to do our safety table at events. Please think about it this position is very important as to our presence in the public eye as well as in the motorcycle community. Remember it takes all of us to make a chapter. Ride Safe Ride Smart!!!!! SNOOZE

Tilting Motor Works kit turns Harley-Davidson motorcycles into 'reverse trikes' by Charles Fleming

A kit from Tilting Motor Works can turn any Harley-Davidson cruiser into a "reverse trike" — two wheels in the front, one in back

— that leans like a bike but won't fall over. (Francine Orr / Los Angeles Times)

The three-wheeled power-sports market is growing fast, driven largely by newbie bikers and aging riders attracted to big motorcycles but afraid of their heft and weight.

Many love the stability of a three-wheeled machine, but an equal number are put off by the handling: Trikes don't lean when they corner. They steer, a little more like a car than a bike.

Now the Seattle-based engineer behind Tilting Motor Works may have found the solution. Company founder Bob Mighell has developed a kit that will turn any Harley-Davidson cruiser into a "reverse trike" — two wheels in the front, one in back — that leans like a bike but won't fall over.

The invention is timely. Harley-Davidson says its three-wheeled Freewheelers and Tri Glides represents the motorcy-cle giant's third-most-popular model. Sales of three-wheeled Can Am Spyders and Polaris Slingshots are up too.

The numbers will only go up as the male-dominated motorcycling cohort ages and as more women enter the sport — both trends that the trade group Motorcycle Industry Council already has noticed.

Although many female riders are jumping on traditional two-wheelers, and riders of both genders continue to make Harley-Davidson the country's biggest motorcycle brand, the popularity of the three-wheeler is likely to grow.

Page 11: PALM BEACH CHAPTERpalmbeach.abateflorida.com/newsletters/2016/APBnewsletter126.pdf · PALM BEACH CHAPTER ISSUE 126 2016-02 PALMBEACH.ABATEFLORIDA.COM FEB. 2016 ABATE of Florida Inc

11 ISSUE #125 2016–02 PALMBEACH.ABATEFLORIDA.COM FEB 2016

Mighell's contraption, which fits all Harleys except the V-Rod and is being altered now to fit the Honda Gold Wing, doesn't come cheap. The base unit costs about $10,000. It includes a new front end, complete with wheels, tires, brakes, suspension and the hardware connecting all that to the motorcycle.

The more complex unit, which includes technology that automatically stabilizes the bike should it tip over too far for the rider's comfort, goes for $13,000.

That's a lot, but it still may be cheaper to convert a new Street Glide (base price: $20,899) than buy a new Tri Glide Ultra for $33,499.

On the road, the Tilting Motor Works conversions feel surprisingly like traditional motorcycles. On a recent swing through Southern California, Mighell brought a Street Glide and a Softail Heritage fitted with Tilting Motor Works front ends.

The bikes handled nicely and felt light, even though the Tilting kit adds about 100 pounds. They carved the curvy roads around Griffith Park just as well as the original two-wheeled versions would have, shifting gracefully from side to side, cornering effortlessly compared with other three-wheelers, which require considerable upper body effort and deliver limited cornering confidence.

And they offer an added benefit of stability, which is a key thing for many riders — especially female riders, Mighell said.

"We're getting a whole lot of interest from women who want a big bike but want the stability of three wheels," Mighell said. "We also hear a lot from guys who like riding with their significant others but who would like them to have their own bikes."

Mighell's Seattle area shop is busy. He says he sold the first 12 kits he built, then sold out the next run of 25 and is already taking orders for the next wave of 50.

Mighell said it appears that the market can bear the cost.

"We did the math," said the tall, Nordic-looking Washington resident. "Harley sold 15,000 trikes at $35,000 each. So that's half a billion dollars. The market is there."

Ruth Zebb of Tucson is one of Mighell's satisfied customers. A longtime Honda Gold Wing owner, she rode for 17 years without an incident, then hit a patch of gravel and went down hard. At 64, she decided she was done riding on two wheels.

She tried a Harley Tri Glide and a Can Am Spyder. "It was like driving a tractor," Zebb said.

But then a friend sent her a Los Angeles Times article about three-wheeled motorcycles, and she saw the Tilting Motor Works trike, and said, "That's what I want."

A year later, she has a new Gold Wing that's been made into a Tilting Motor Works machine. "I'm thrilled," Zebb said. "I love it."

LEGISLATIVE REPORT

DAN “SLOW-MOTION” HENDERSON

I saw on the morning news that the legislature is going to ban the use of red line cameras through the state. They have proven not effective in reducing the enforcement I have noticed that yellow lights have gotten shorter and the old one minute per 10 mph posted limit rule is not valid anymore.. Here are the updates on the Vulnerable Road user Bills. HB 253 has passed its second House committee The Appropriations Committee 19-0. It now moves to the last committee The Economic Affairs Committee. The Senate version SB 322 has just been scheduled for its first hearing in the Senate Transportation Committee on Wednesday the 27th at 1 pm.

Here are some latest highlights from Tally. 'STAND YOUR GROUND' SHIFT READY TO PASS SENATE Taking issue with the Florida Supreme Court, state senators next week could approve a bill that would shift the burden of proof in "stand your ground" self-defense cases. The Senate Thursday took up the bill (SB 344), filed by Sen. Rob Bradley, R-Fleming Island, and put it in position for a vote as soon as Jan. 28. The bill stems from a Supreme Court ruling last year that said defendants have the burden of proof of showing they should be shielded from prosecution under the "stand your ground" law. In "stand your ground" cases, pre-trial evidentiary hearings are held to determine whether de-fendants should be immune from prosecution. Bradley's measure would place the burden of proof on prosecutors in the evidentiary hearings. "It's a fundamental tenet of our criminal-justice system that the state has the burden of proof throughout the criminal prosecution --- you're innocent until proven guilty, I think we can all agree with that --- so this bill applies this fundamental tenet of criminal law to the self-defense immunity hearing,'' Bradley said. But while the Senate appears poised to pass the bill, it remains unclear whether the shift will get approval in the House. The House version (HB 169), filed by Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, was blocked in November by the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee on a 6-6 vote.

JUDICIAL TERM LIMITS MOVING THROUGH HOUSE A key House committee Thursday approved a measure that would limit Florida Supreme Court justices and appellate-court judges to two full terms in office, putting a proposed constitutional amendment one step shy of the House floor. The House Appropriations Committee voted 13-6 along party lines to move the legislation forward. The amendment (HJR 197) would limit most future justices and judges to fewer than 15 years in office, depending on when they are appointed to the bench. Under the proposal, members of the Supreme Court and district courts of appeal would be limited to two full six-year terms, though tenures would likely be longer than that because jurists are appointed to partial terms before facing voters in retention elections. No current member of the bench would be affected, and trial-court judges would not face term limits. Judges currently have to retire in the election cycle after they turn 70 years old. PANEL SUPPORTS TURNING OFF RED-LIGHT CAMERAS A House committee Thursday approved a bill that would bar local governments from using red-light cameras to cite motorists who don't properly stop at intersections. The House Economic Affairs Committee backed the proposal (HB 4027), filed by Rep. Frank Artiles, a Miami Republican who has long opposed the cameras. The bill would repeal a 2010 law that authorized the use of the cameras. Critics, such as Artiles,

argue the cameras don't improve traffic safety and that local governments rely on red-light camera citations as a source of revenue. "It's not about safety,'' Artiles said. "It's about money." But Florida League of Cities lobbyist Casey Cook said cities should be allowed to develop solutions to their local problems. The bill would need approval from the House Appropriations Committee before it could go to the full House. A similar Senate bill (SB 168), filed by Senate Transportation Chairman Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, has not been heard in committees.

SHERIFFS PITCH ALTERNATIVE TO OPEN CARRY Florida sheriffs Wednesday proposed an alternative to a controversial bill that would let people with concealed-weapons licenses openly display firearms in public, but the proposal quickly drew opposition from Second Amendment advocates. The Florida Sheriffs Association, which has opposed the open-carry measure, outlined proposed steps that would provide immunity to people who inadvertently or accidentally display firearms. However, a release from the association noted the proposal "stops short of Florida becoming a complete open-carry state." The Senate version of the bill (SB 300) has not been heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee. But committee Chairman Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, said Tuesday he's likely to schedule the bill for a vote, saying, "I heard there may be some good amendments." On Wednesday, Diaz de la Portilla said he was still reviewing the sheriffs' proposal, which the association said would protect permit holders from arrest for unintentionally displaying weapons in violation of state law. The proposal would require that people intentionally and deliberately violate the law before they could be arrested. Also, it would take steps such as establish a presumption that concealed-weapons license holders are lawfully carrying guns; prohibit people from being convicted if they aren't given a chance to explain possible violations of the law; and allow the expungement of arrest records under the law if people are found not guilty or charges are dismissed. MORE ON NON-ETHANOL GAS, PURE GAS or E0 Dan “Slo Motion” Henderson

At the last State meeting Scribe’s legislative report got me to write in my report “Blue gas, ethanol free, is available at NEW Raceway stations at LOW prices, even as low as $2.02 a gallon! Anyone know of new Raceways?” I did get one reply from Dennis “Data” checked about what I wrote, “From what I could find, its Blue Rhino gas and its propane not gasoline. There is a new Sunoco station on Northlake - they sell rec90 for about $1.05 more a gallon. Roughly $3/gallon.” I did see an Orion station Military Trail east side south of Gateway Rec 90 $2.999 gal. When we were at Palm Beach International Raceway for the Freedom Motorcycle Fest I saw that the Sunoco there was selling non-ethanol racing fuel for $10.75 at 93 octane and they never heard of Blue Gas. At our meeting we heard that the Sunoco at 45th Australian River and had 103 octane Racing for around $8 and a new Raceway Hypoluxo east of I95 which had the complete range of fuel types. Another new station being built needs to be checked. So non-ethanol gas is not Blue Gas, but Rec 90 octane, Pure Gas, E0 or Racing fuel with various octane levels. A search for Pure Gas on the Internet brought up some links. This one told me Pure Gas was EO https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pure-gas/id454559068?mt=8 but not much else as seemed Canadian. One was about using ethanol treatment additives with your gas instead of going total ethanol free gas http://www.goldeagle.com/tips-tools/considering-ethanol-free-gas-try-ethanol-treatment-instead. Do how do you find where you can get ethanol free gas? Another try found yellow page search http://www.yellowpages.com/lake-worth-fl/non-ethanol-gas-stations and that allows for a city search. Going on the Raceway tip I searched their site but nothing helped there. One Raceway search (http://www.floridastategasprices.com/RaceWay_Gas_Stations/index.aspx) took me to GasBuddy but that didn’t include non-ethanol. So I emailed them about that, their reply: “We currently only support the three main grades of gasoline (regular, mid grade, premium), and regular diesel. We are considering adding other fuel types to the website and apps as time goes on. Ethanol content is quite a bit trickier. With current laws in the U.S. regarding ethanol dependent on location, it is very difficult, if not impossible to have a way to determine ethanol content. Some areas require labeling gasoline with ethanol, while others do not. Sometimes the only way of knowing is asking the station owner or the operator, and they may be reluctant to tell you.”

So the best site for finding where to get the Pure Gas, what octane, and USA/Canada, State, and City is pure-gas.org. Android and iPhone apps are available. Below is a list I created of a search of many Palm Beach and Broward locations that might come in handy for riders. Best to do own to see if updated or see if you can join and help with this database. Many are Rec 90.

So this cool. For a trip you could pick the cities going to and on the way. One thing not showing on the printout is how to get prices. On the site, on the right are buttons, one for a map and details which often includes price. Don’t see updated as much as Gas Buddy. The app gives you stations near your GPS location but no price data. I did find going to the credits on top, it does link you to the site where you can get that information as mentioned above. While checking for this app on my PlayStore, I found a lot of apps to locate E85 stations which is the opposite of what we want. I did find a Raceway app. Not bad but no E0 listed in fuel choices. Other that that not bad as does have many nice advanced search options including 24 Hour, beer sales, etc. In a past issue I reported on the Where2Ride app. I'm still looking at it. They have been emailing me support so looking at it more. I will report more in future. Looks like a good place to put up events and get more exposure. Dan “Slo Motion” Henderson

Motorcycle Safe Weight Calculator “CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, Jan. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Motorcycle Safe Weight Calculator, an exclusive creation of EdwardsMotorcycleLaw.com, has been updated with 2016 models, attorney Billy Edwards has announced. The calculator tells touring motorcycle owners how much gear they can safely load on their motorcycles and stay within safe weight limits established for their bike. "It doesn't take much to overload a cruiser after you factor in the weights of both riders in full gear, fuel, oil and drinking water," Edwards said. "Riders wanting to keep the motorcycle within the manufacturer's designated weight limit will want to run a check using the calculator." "Riding a long distance on an overloaded bike can lead to tire failure if the tires are defective. Be safe, use the calculator and stay within the bike's weight rating," Edwards urged. How the Safe Weight Calculator Works For each motorcycle's year make and model, the Safe Weight Calculator factors in (as shown in owners' manuals or published specifications): Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), Dry weight, and Wet weight. (If wet weight is not available, the calculator adds typical fuel and oil weight for the model) To use the Safe Weight Calculator, simply find your touring bike's year and model and enter the driver and passenger weights when dressed in full riding gear. The database will calculate how much additional gear can be packed on the bike without exceeding the motorcycle's GVWR. Using the 2016 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Ultra as an example, if the pilot weighs 270 pounds and the passenger weighs 160 pounds (including helmet, boots and clothing), 14 pounds of gear can be added before reaching the bike's designated weight limit. Overloaded, Defective Tires carry Failure Risk The database contains 2016 information for Harley-Davidson, BMW, Victory and Can-Am touring bikes. Updates will be added as manufacturers release details on other 2016 models, Edwards said. The database contains weight information on most touring motorcycles, beginning with 2010 models.” http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/are-you-ready-to-ride--check-the-motorcycle-safe-weight-calculator-300204641.html
