PALM SUNDAY OF OUR LORD’S PASSION MARCH 20, 2016

Pastor’s Corner

Holy Week begins with the reading of the Passion at all masses on Palm Sunday. The reading sets the stage for the events of Holy Week; Holy Thursday commemorating the Institution of the Eucharist; Good Friday commemorating the suffering and death of Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins; Easter Vigil begins the celebration of Christ’s triumph over sin and death through His resurrection. As a whole, Holy Week is meant to be a sobering reminder of the depth of Christ’s suffering for us. That depth of suffering represents the infinite love of God for us. Jesus willingly gave up His power as God to live with us, to completely identify with our struggles against temptation and evil. Because of the fullness of His humanity, Jesus takes upon Himself all of the sins of our human condition. Because of the fullness of His divinity, Jesus becomes the eternal high priest offering Himself for our salvation.

This week is our final opportunity this Lenten season to reflect on our lives and our response to Jesus’ offering for us. Do we really understand how much He suffered for us? Do we really understand how much He loves us? Jesus suffered and died so that each of us could be forgiven our sins and live in the Spirit as His witnesses in the world. Does our daily life reflect our picking up our cross and following Jesus? It is only through our participation in His cross that we can come to the power of the resurrection. May this Holy Week help us to appreciate Jesus’ love for each of us, and may it truly be holy for us! Amen!

It is almost time for the Annual Good Friday Walk in Longmont! ALL are invited! Everyone is welcome! This is a great opportunity for families to be involved in our Lord's Way of the Cross, as well as a wonderful Christian witness to the Longmont community. We will once again be walking across town in Longmont, CO. We will walk from St. John the Baptist Church to St. Francis of Assisi Church (~5 miles). We will be stopping at certain points along the way to pray the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross. We end with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy inside St. Francis Parish right after the walk. We hope to arrive about 11:30 am. Father Frank will also be available for confessions during and after this time. DATE: Good Friday! March 25, 2016 START TIME: 7:45 am gather. We begin the solemn and prayerful walk at 8:00 am sharp from St. John’s parking lot. LOCATION: Meet in the back parking lot of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 323 Collyer St., Longmont (3rd and Emery, near the playground).

* For those that need to walk a shorter distance or need wheelchairs for the Walk, we should be arriving at JC Penney on Hover and Nelson around 9:45 am. Please park on the North side of the building and look for us. We will be gathered as a group on the North side of JC Penney on the large sidewalk for about 10 minutes for prayer and restroom break (at King Soopers). We will continue our walk to St. Francis of Assisi Church (3791 Pike Road at Airport Rd). BRING: Wagons, strollers, sunscreen, Rosaries, water, snacks for the little ones, but please, NO bikes, skates, scooters, IPods, music, or social texting. Kids in previous years have made their own light-weight cross to carry; as the larger cross will be carried by adults only. You may also bring your own snacks and lunch for the kids to eat at the end of the walk. PRINT AND BRING: Stations of the Cross prayer booklet, 8 pages. It is also posted on the St. Francis and St. John’s website. Please make sure you have enough copies for your family to follow along. We will also be doing the Rosary and Litany of Humility if you need to print these as well. Dress for the weather! - We go rain, snow, or sunshine! There will be cars parked at St. Francis to take drivers back to SJB and JC Penney to retrieve their cars. Those remaining will watch the kids at St. Francis until they return. We’ve had upwards to 200 Christian witnesses on the walk and it’s powerful to commemorate Good Friday as a faith community. Please join us, and spread the word to family and friends! God bless your Lenten journey! Questions? Please call Rhonda at 303-883-6206 or email [email protected] Julie at 720-840-0974, or Mary at 303-684-9304.

MEALS OF MERCY UPDATE Our meals of Mercy program continues to reach out to provide meals for many who are in need. Thanks to all the volunteers who have graciously prepared

and delivered meals. We would also like to thank those who have generously provided gift cards for those in need. The cards have proven to be super helpful. If you or a loved one could benefit from a few meals to get through a challenging life event, please let us know. If YOU are the person in need, please don’t hesitate to call us. Contact Michele at [email protected] or call her at 303-564-0696.

We need you to refer folks and to keep on cooking for this program to fulfill our goal of showing mercy to all.

In January, 28 meals were served. It is amazing to hear from those we have served and what an impact Meals of Mercy has made in their lives.

We are blessed…

ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Any time that your health changes, if you are going to have a scheduled surgery, or if your loved one is approaching death please call the Parish in a timely manner, and ask to be anointed. This is called the Anointing of the Sick. Please don’t wait until someone is going into surgery (unless it’s an emergency), or till death is imminent to call for a priest. The Anointing of the Sick can only be administered by a priest. Communion can be brought to you by one of our trained Ministers.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION IF YOU ARE BEING ADMITTED INTO THE HOSPITAL: When being admitted to the hospital you are typically asked if you would like a clergy visit. Please say “Yes”, in order for someone from the Catholic Church to be able to bring you Holy Communion, or pray with you. It does not mean that you want a priest to visit you. We have Eucharistic Ministers from St. Francis of Assisi and St. John’s who bring Communion to the hospital every day of the week. If you are not asked about a visit from your church, please let them know that yes, you would like a Communion visit.

Hello Everyone! Today is Palm Sunday the beginning of Holy Week. During Lent we have all tried to be extra good, by praying more and being more understanding to the needs of those around us. Today let us look to the beginning of Lent to see how we did. Did we do everything we intended to do during Lent or do we still have to work a little harder? I know I have to work a little harder and I don't have to wait until next Lent, I can start over again today. God is so good, He always gives us another chance. Love & Prayers, Stewardship Council

$50, and $100 denominations, and Walmart in $25 and $100. Please stop by the gift card win-

dow for all your Easter menu needs! Where can I eat a vegetarian-style meal during Lent?

Eating a simple vegetarian meal at home would be the most sacrificial option, but for those times we cannot, there are many restaurants where we can find a vegetarian

meal. For seafood we carry: Red Lobster, Apple-bee's, Chili's, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Red Robin, or TGI Friday's. In a hurry? We have: McDonald's, Wendy's, Noodles, Panera, Carl's

Jr, or Subway. How about vegetarian pizza? We carry Lefty’s, Papa Murphy’s, Pizza Hut, and Old Chicago. Stop by the gift card counter and get your choice today!

In your Easter Bonnet with all the frills upon it?? Women, did you know we have the following gift cards available for all

your Easter outfit purchases and that of your family? We have: Kohl's, JC Penney, Macy's, Gap/Old Navy/

Banana Republic, Ross and Marshalls as well as Walmart and Target. If you want to use your

Kohl's charge card, you may use our fund-raising gift cards to pay off your Kohl's credit card charges later!

LAST CHANCE TO GET YOUR PANERA GIFT CARDS! We will be having a fundraiser at PANERA located at 425 Ken Pratt Blvd on TUESDAY, March 29 from 4-8 pm. We may use gift cards for purchases at this event. PLEASE pick up or order your gift cards in advance. There will not be gift card sales during the Easter weekend Masses. We will receive a 15% return on all sales PLUS the 9% with the use of Panera gift cards for a total of 24%! That is why it is important you plan ahead. You also need to bring a flier, available at the gift card window, to hand in at the time of your purchase. Thank you for your support!
