My Fellow Civitans, Since our last communication we lost two Civitan Family members Lura Boggs and Richard Blair. Luras family ask that we donate to make her a Shropshire Fellow, so, if you have not already done so, contact Civitan International and make your dona- tion. These members will be missed and fondly remembered. Mid-term is a great time to re-evaluate our goals and determine where we are now, and what needs to be done to achieve the goals, then make a plan and follow it . I challenge each club to kindle your fire for Civitan with three logs: a log to Reinvent, a log to re-energize and a log to evolve. Re- invent communications and presentation, re -energize with new clubs, and members, and evolve into a thriving community organization of service, knowledge and fellowship. It is difficult to write this column as Lura Boggs was always a bright spot in Civitan for so many of us. She was one of the first SC District people that I met and was kind enough to assist me in finding my way around the rules, personalities, and needs in the District during her second stint as Gov. in 2011-12. Lura’s time in Civitan in South Carolina goes back to long before I met her and members of the Metropolitan Civitan club in Charleston re-call a smiling, active Lura who served the club & district with energy & joy. In fact her first service as Governor in the SC District was in 1993-4. Her many roles in Civitan in South Carolina are listed below but somehow it misses the mark in

conveying just how much she meant to Civitan in this state.

Her family used the Civitan Creed to express Lura’s views to life at right and it begins to touch on the true spirit that Lura brought to those around her & the community. Our prayers are offered to Lura and may she rest in the peace of the Lord. May those of us left contribute just a fraction of what Lura has in paying it forward in our communities.

Lighthouse for Life combats Human Trafficking of Young Girls with educa-tion, outreach, and a Safe House for Girls that have somehow escaped their bondage via law enforcement or rare self preservation. to Ligthouse for Life the following week You can also make a personal, tax deductible, donation. Lighthouse for Life is 501

Gov. Belita Broadus [at left] started off 2018 with the SC District Meet-ing on January 6th in Columbia for a day of education, socialization, & enjoyment. The agenda provided a good mix of speakers and presenta-tions for the attendees with many presentations being supported by ef-fective slide shows. To allow review of the day’s content and to permit those who couldn't be at the meeting to benefit from the day, it is the District’s intent to put the presentations on our website so stay tuned for more information on this. The day was led off by Gov. Elect Gary Finley [at right] who presented a good overview of the need and process of strategic planning. This area is being em-phasized by Civitan International & each club could benefit from using the tools and techniques dicussed. These plans can assist in keeping club’s activities focused on their objectives and, with regular revision, maintain a consistent message to prospec-tive members, club regulars, and the pub-

lic. Laura Caskey [left] gave the attendees a perspective of Public Relations that was espe-cially focused on social media. As the manager of public affairs at the South Carolina Depart-ment of Public Safety, she is truly a knowledge-able resource for the District in this arena and we were lucky to have her give us a peek into this topic. There are so many apps available and different vehi-cles to get our message out there, that many of us were a bit overwhelmed and it was a bit of a shock to find out that Facebook is for the Baby Boomer generation. With her help and an effort in each club, the district might phase in the next generation of Civitans and reach out to the crowd that is needed to continue community service in coming decades. Frank DeLustro [right] present-ed on the Civigram and the desire to make it a more valuable tool to all South Carolina Civitans. As editor, his presentation emphasized the objectives of the Palmetto Civigram, our SC Dis-trict newsletter, and the contributions that each club can have to its ability to educate, motivate, inform, and unite Civitans in this district. Beth Doudoukjian [pictured left], the SC District Awards Chair, updated the group on the awards proce-dures and the desire of the district leadership to increase the participation of clubs in the awards application process. More will be coming from her as the August 1st deadline approaches for putting your club and members into the running for recognition. There is a district opportunity to provide recognition of the good works being done throughout the state and the great Civitans helping their communities…..but only if the stories are told through articles

and awards. To have your club newsletter in the competition easily, just copy her on the newsletter distribution list & it will automatically be in the running for the district newsletter award. We hope that all clubs will enter their most interesting events, accomplishments, and achievements for awards! Mike Taylor [left] has been doing a great job of assisting clubs in initiating the birth of new Civitan Clubs in the district. So his stories certain-ly help to provide insight and inspiration for others to start new clubs in the state. The growth of Civitan throughout the world is dependent on the con-tinual addition of new members and clubs, if only to compensate for the loss of clubs and attrition of members. Mike has been doing a great job of assisting in the initiation and launch of new Civitan Clubs in the SC Dis-trict. Emily Wright [right] gave an-other perspective on electronic com-

munications and added to the message presented by Laura. The mes-sage was clear: clubs need to enter the 21st century and get internet literate to survive. Again the plethora of websites and Apps was em-phasized and the value they can provide to us in reaching our mem-bership & the public was made clear. Many of the names like Twit-ter, SnapChat, and Instagram are becoming household words but oth-ers like MailChimp were new to many of us. With assistance from folks like Emily, many of us that are stuck in a Facebook mode can come out of our shells! Steve Doudoukjian added that he would like to add many club [pictures to the SC District website but needs sub-missions. So when you can send Steve some of the great pictures from your club activities and events….along with some description of course. Steve and Emily are there to help if you need some guid-

ance in this are-na. Belita provided us with the district plans for the year and wrap up of the day’s discussions. How-ever perhaps the biggest hit of the day was Lura Boggs who was running the raffle for the out-standing baskets brought by the clubs in attend-ance. After this the meeting was adjourned and everyone went on to Board meeting activities or returning home. Hope to see you at the next SC

District Meeting when the current President of Civitan International is ex-pected to be a speaker!

Lura closed with the anticipated raffle!

To help serve the homeless men in our community, Bethel United Methodist Church operates a men’s shelter from No-vember through March each year. The Rock Hill Civitan Club has the pleasure of

serving a meal to this group of men twice a year. Due to the cold temperatures we served 70 plates that evening! We also provide breakfast bags for the men leaving the shelter the next morning. This ministry is blessing to those in need within our community, and a blessing to us as we serve them!

Civitan Awareness Month – Global Project: As a par t of the Civitan International [CI] Board Committee in Nov., 2017 that had the task of coming up with a Global Project for Civitan (signature project for us), we came up with one to honor Special Education Teachers and Paraprofessionals. We came up with the name “Servant’s Heart Awards”! This was unveiled at the GE Webinars in Feb. Part One of the toolkit is on the website but some folks are having trouble with the compressed zip folder. If you experience trouble, please call Terry or Scarlet and they can email it directly. The complete toolkit will have a guidebook instructing Clubs how to carryout variations of the event, a template invite, a template certificate for the winners, two print ads, a poster, two videos that Clubs can use on their FB pages or websites, a vinyl banner template that can be displayed at the event, and a template news releases. Revamped CI Website: The new Website will be unveiled soon. The developers are making it simpler and more visual. There will be new things on the website, including one place where members can go called the “Member Re-source Center”. Civitan Action Board: Civitan is struggling with relating to the younger generation. Scar let has been working with Bobby and Meredith to come up with a new way to reach millennials. Many communities across the country have Junior Boards [JB]. They are more of a fundraising mechanism for charities and they do include a lot of service based on the mission of each charity, a great way of generating awareness and recruiting young professionals. So we’ve de-cided to move forward with piloting one here in Birmingham. We will mirror the philosophy of St. Jude’s Hospital which is bringing in lots of money, generating awareness, and connecting with young folks using this new JB ap-proach. Ours will be named the “Civitan Action Board”. The plan is to unveil the group at the Autism Awareness game for our minor league baseball team at the end of April. The Civitan Action Board is working to recruit several young professionals in Alabama to become a part of the group and they’ll do a service project at the game. Claxton Fruit Cake Situation: Scar let will be visiting Dale Parker in Apr il to draft an agreement regarding our partnership with Claxton. The policy has never been clear: it’s confusing and it’s never adequately explained the pro-gram. Corporate Counsel recommended a meeting to draft an agreement. Golf Tournament: The PIPs will be hosting the Breakthrough Tournament at the Convention in Reno! I have a copy of the Official Sponsorship Agreement for those who have connections with businesses, Civitans or Clubs who would like to take us up on these opportunities. Borrowing our 501c(3) Status: We have unveiled a process for Clubs to bor row our status:

There is a form to be filled out. (I can forward to Club Presidents so you’ll have it). A staff team will review the application to see if it meets the guidelines. If approved, the Club will be sent a customized version of the agreement to be signed by a Club Officer and re-

turned. International will keep all paperwork on file with any payments that come in to insure that the status was used in

the right way. Depending on the amount of money coming into Int’l, an Administrative Fee will be charged to the Club for the

processing of the monies. There will also be a workshop at Convention about our new legal processes Staff Managed Funds: Contact letters have officially gone out to the Trustees of all funds being held by Int ’l for Clubs and Districts that are defunct (surrendered their Charters) By March 16th, they were to affirm the intentions of the fund with Int’l. For example, which ones want to be segregated from our investments, withdrawn, etc. This infor-mation will be made available to Board Members at our meeting on next week and I’ll pass that info on to you. Budget Cuts Update: Scar let is continuing to look at ways to contain costs at our Headquar ter s. Some of these cost savings will include: Cancelling the train the trainer’s meeting that was planned for the Geographic Trainers; and cutting all Entertainment at the Convention General Sessions, with the exception of the Welcome Party and Closing Ceremonies. *****As a reminder, the Honor Club Application was updated to state to be considered an Honor Club and the president to be Distinguished President, the president must recruit one new member for his club.*****

will receive a handmade quilt. On May 18th we will dine, meet, and greet International President Massey. All Civitans are invited to attend this classy casual event at your own expense. The evening will begin at 6:00 PM at Terra Restaurant, 100 State St., West Columbia, SC 29169. Interested parties may contact Steve Doudoukjian to make reservations (803) 796-6278 or [email protected]. To review the restaurant on the internet it is listed as terracolumbiasc.com. While here President Massey will hold a workshop session and Vice President Thompson will speak on the 2019 International Convention coming to South Carolina. In the meantime it is time to begin planning to attend the District Convention in Greenville, South Carolina scheduled for August 24-26, 2018. The convention hotel is the Hyatt Regency, 220 N. Main Street, Greenville, SC which is located in the downtown area. The room rates are $119.00 for single and double occupancy. There is a parking garage near the hotel. District Clubs and individuals are awarded for their excellence at

the District Convention, so go for that last push for excellence. While not a district award, the Honor Club Application is an excellent model to work from. I will take this opportunity to share my conversations with some of the club presidents from around the district because they reveal some very

interesting projects and activities which are the heart of Civitan in our District. I apologize if I did not reach out to your club this time, but I will before the next newsletter: Chester – is feeling the success from a pancake supper; the community was involved. They have been making Field trips around the community, which helps to make them more visible. Chester is also sponsoring a soccer team this year.

Lamar- still feels the love from their Valentine dinner and dance.

There were about 40 in attendance. They are looking forward to their spring fundraiser in April. Members make different dishes; for $25.00 per person it is all you can eat and drink……..Two people from the com-munity were honored with a toast. Music and dancing were enjoyed during the celebration. Dr. Gordon Brown received his 65 years of Civitan membership certificate. WOW!! All of the ladies were given a long stem rose. It doesn’t get much sweeter than that. Congratulations Dr. Brown and thank you for all of your service. This club is on fire planning the Silver Fox golf Tournament. Go Lamar!!! Spartanburg – Sponsors two Pancake Suppers a year one to assist dialysis patients who are on Medicaid and one for Special Olympics. Spartanburg also sponsors a Golf Tournament to benefit New Day Club House which is for chronic illness. The club has been sponsoring this event for 25-30 years. Sponsors gave food to the disaster areas. Union- the club is doing well; their chicken stew was a success. Profits from the fundraiser were donated toward hospital bills for an eighth grade student who was stricken with cancer. Their second chicken stew fundraiser raised over $1,000 which was donated to help another service organization, the Lion’s Club. Ad-ditionally, they are involved with their newly chartered Jr. Civitan club which is also actively involved in the community.

WHAT IS CIVITAN?

Civitan is a worldwide, all vol-unteer service organization where men and women have an organized way of ap-proaching local community problems through service and fund raisin.

We emphasize serving people with developmental disabili-ties. Local clubs are support-ed by Civitan International, which was organized in 1917 and spans over 24 countries. The word CIVITAN is a coined word that comes from the Lat-in word “CIVITAS”, which means CITIZENSHIP.

Hilton Head-the club is working on a special project, writing encouragement notes to the students of Majory Stoneman Douglas High School of Parkland, Florida. A mini-golf fundraiser is also in the plans for this energetic club. They are partnering with the Chamber of Commerce and Pockets full of Sunshine fo-cusing on local adults with disabilities making arts and crafts to sell at local markets around the Bluffton area. Columbia- celebrates a big success with their signature project for the Bab-cock Center for Adult with handicaps, ice cream social. Spearheaded by Dar-lene Cox, the social featured music, ice cream, cookies, cup cakes, cornhole throw, and even arts and crafts. The club is also planning to partner with the Dutch Fork Club for a Flea Market sale in March. While April looks exciting because the Columbia Club is supporting the Palmetto Club for a casino night. In May they sponsor a cookout for the Epworth Children ‘s Home and offer the Home $500.00. The Columbia Club is also excited to have as their speaker, the USC geologist professor who mentored a child with autism, who became a Rhodes Scholar. Myrtle Beach- Prepared for the Jr. Civitan Dance-A-Thon which was on March 10.

The District will sponsor dinner for International President Kendyl Massey and her husband on May 18, 2018 at Terra Restaurant, on 100 State St., West Columbia, SC beginning at 6:30PM. All Civitans are wel-come to join her for dinner at your own expense. Contact Steve Doudoukjian to make reservations for the dinner. Steve can be reached at 803-796-6278 call after 6:00 PM. Option two is to drop by and socialize af-ter dinner.

Hopefully each club will be represented on May 19, 2018 when our President joins us. She comes from Ten-nessee to join us, surely we can meet her in our SC district.

My hope is for a better world through Civitan, Belita Broadus District Governor
