When the Kleppers bought their home a few years ago, much of the major updating and remodeling had been done by the previous owners, Cathy and Norbert Kordsmeier. Susan liked Cathy’s taste so much, she invited her back to create a mural of a Tuscan castle in the bathroom — something Cathy, an interior designer and artist, had always wanted to do but hadn’t found the time. The heart of the home’s interior is a great room, created by the Kordsmeiers by taking out a bedroom and bath. “Other than upgrading the appliances, we’ve left it alone,” Susan Klepper said, pointing to the rubbed golden walls and stenciling below the molding. Only one double-hung window, with its original rippled glass, is left in the kitchen. “To us, it’s the eye of the home,” Klepper said, adding that she loves to watch the kids ride in from school. Renovations were made in keeping with the house’s style, while fixing what wasn’t working. “We wanted to keep the integrity of the home. It wasn’t insulated well and there was dry rot in the original hardwood floors,” she said. One whimsical early addition was an upstairs bedroom, what the family refers to as “the treehouse room,” which overlooks the large back yard. Today their daughter enjoys cedar-lined closets located under the slanted roofline, as well as the view. What the treehouse room overlooks is a massive oak. “It’s daily maintenance, but it’s absolutely fabulous,” said Klepper, and it “provides enough shade that we don’t need air conditioning.” The latest change to the Klepper home is revamping the master bathroom, where the family removed an unused tub and installed a perfectly fitting cabinet made from 100-year-old reclaimed wood. “I’ve been searching for half a year,” Klepper said, and they had even removed a window behind the cabinet to create the right space. “We’re in love with it. It’s our new baby. How many people have a chandelier and a buffet in the bathroom? But it seems to work.” Much of the family living is done outdoors. The house is sited in the middle of a half acre, leaving plenty of room for that venerable oak, a wooden deck with a fire pit and a dining pavilion, a pool and a large expanse of lawn. The garage has been converted to a playroom. Original charm, updated function This renovated 1924 farmhouse is one of six homes to be included on the Los Altos Home & Garden Tour on May 12. Klepper calls the back yard “Carmel cottage-y.” From a wooden bench swing in one corner, one can enjoy the zinnia, roses, iris, hollyhock, azaleas, hydrangeas and foxglove, as well as the whim-sical birdfeeders decorated by old doorknobs.

“It’s very private, in the middle of the city,” Klepper said, recall-ing what attracted her to the property. “We fell in love with how quiet, private and isolated” it is — and how similar it seemed to the 1920s homes where she and her husband both grew up.

Other homes and gardens on tour include:• 1905: The J. Gilbert Smith History House, an apricot-orchard

farmhouse, will offer glimpses into life in early Los Altos. The house has been recreated and maintained by the Los Altos His-tory Museum to reflect life in the 1930s.

• 1939: A rustic adobe, built from materials dug on site, features tile floors, the original kitchen and a newly landscaped garden.

• 1948: In the front, this Covington cottage retains the character of a wood-shingled bungalow. Remodels have expanded living space from the original two bedrooms, while the back opens up to spacious lawns.

• 1997: A dramatic wood, steel and concrete home in the Alta Mesa area — incorporating energy-saving features — was de-signed and built by Laura Strand.

• 2000: A Tuscan-style home on historic Arbor Avenue fea-tures heavy wooden doors, wrought-iron touches and compatible furnishings. ■Assistant Editor Carol Blitzer can be e-mailed at [email protected].

T urquoise walls with persimmon floral drapes, a tanned sting-ray table top, painted black kitchen cabi-nets with a copper farmer’s sink — this is what you

can expect to find at this year’s Decorator Showcase, San Francisco’s premier show house that runs through May 28.

Located in a four-story mansion in Pacific Heights — think many steps to get to the front door — the show house offers rooms designed by dozens of mainly San Francisco-based interior designers. A special feature this year is the Thursday evening “Design Salon,” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with lectures by senior designers and curators. The full schedule is available on the Web site www.DecoratorShow-case.org.

The show house is a fundraiser for University High School in San Francisco. It is currently on the market for $55 million (www.2901broadwaystreet.com).

But first, some previews:■ The shell: The house itself is a 10,000-square-foot home

designed by Henry Clay Smith, known as San Francisco’s “hilltop architect.” The Renaissance-style home boasts a grand formal entrance, four levels of living space with seven bedrooms and six bathrooms, not to mention one of the few private tennis courts in Pacific Heights.

■ Brightest idea: The master bedroom, designed by Ken-dall Wilkinson, San Francisco, who splashed a deep tur-quoise on the walls, contrasted with hot persimmon and white drapery. Program notes say the inspiration was the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, water and sky.

■ Runner-up: Pumpkin-colored Sunbrella fabric on exte-rior teak couches in the Tennis Garden, designed by Sean Weatherill, San Francisco.

■ Best use of recycled materials: The Girls’ Bedroom, designed by Brad Huntzinger and Kate McIntyre of Ironies, Berkeley, features a bed made of polished cattle bone and reclaimed teak, as well as that sting-ray-hide side table.

■ Best cover-up of old molding: In the Guest Bedroom, Victoria Foster Gwin, San Francisco, used tree-bark wall coverings that simulated limestone or marble, to cover dark oak crown molding, baseboards and window and door trim.

■ Best new take on an old theme: Instead of the classic white painted cabinets and white farmer’s sink, the kitchen features black painted cabinets with a copper sink.

■ Best cover-up of ugly ceiling: In the Library, Chris Reed of Modesto designed a linen “lampshade” to cover the icky light fixtures. With very high ceilings, there was no problem lowering the linen enough to prevent fire danger.

■ Most whimsical room: the Cake Baker’s Lair, by Susan Lind Chastain, Fine Sewing, San Francisco, which featured cakes and more cakes everywhere, from the chair fabric to the cookbooks, molds and baking paraphernalia — oh, and plenty of decorated faux-cakes. ■Assistant Editor Carol Blitzer can be e-mailed at [email protected].
