The tour had one main purpose: to attach human faces to issues which can be rather abstract such as climate change, pollution, environmental damage and enforced adapta-tion. They wanted to meet people who were intimately acquainted with these realities and who were finding solutions to them. They based their journey on daily interchanges with local people, it was a truly human experience.

Around the themes of farming, forest and water, Siméon and Alexandre went out to meet women and men who, faced with environmen-

tal realities, were displaying a commitment to laying the foundations for their future at local level. NGO leaders, community leaders, even ministers of the environment were among the people that they met, their encounters being as varied as they were numerous. All over the world, people are working to bring about the desired transition, inventing the world of tomorrow. Using the example set by those people who were doing so much with limited resources, Simeon and Alexandre wish to demonstrate that this transition is possible and already in progress.

A PROJECT FULL OFMEANING

The association On the Green Road was founded in 2011 by two cousins who had just graduated, Simeon and Alexandre. They spent 14 months traveling around the world by bike. They traveled 18,000 kilometers across 26 countries: in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and South America. An awe-inspiring adventure, made up of blissfulness, struggling, significant encounters, profound thoughts and wonderful landscapes.

One of the cousins studied civil engineering, the other business. Having obtained their master’s degrees and combining their ecological commitment with a thirst for adventure, they set off into the unknown with one aim in mind: to understand and share a different vision of ecology. On the ground, they sought out people who were already taking part in the change. They were convinced that, by showing what was happening in emerging countries, it would be possible to encourage and inspire people to act when they returned to France.

A BOLD ADVENTURE!

THE TEAM

SIMÉON BALDIT DE BARRALWhile hitch-hicking in Argentina, the idea of one of the drivers struck him: « Sustainable development? Very witty of you. We will do exactly the same as you. Development comes first: we might add the ‘sustainable’ later. » Simeon is an engineer specializing in sutainable construction, he wishes to go beyond technicity and focus on a vision of society that includes the use of sustainable development in daily life.

Writer and director of the documentary, Simeon now dedicates his time to its diffusion and hitch-hicking to the four corners of France to hold debates. He accompagnies and trains future explorers, ready to pick up the slack of the cinematographic adventure of On the Green Road.

By participating in a number of student’ projects, Alexandre acquired a taste for adventure. During his first year of business school, he decided with Simeon to go on a world tour by bike. While preparing for the tour, he was already aware of the importance of conserving nature, but could not imagine the extent to which his vision of the world was to change during his 14 months on the road.

After his ride on the roads of the world, he worked on the film production and on the eco-nomic model of the collaborative screenings. He is currently studying the management of tropical forests and is now living in the Domi-nican Republic.

SHARING EXPERIENCES

Back in France and with the dynamic launched by the COP21, organized in Paris in November 2015, Alexandre and Siméon are eager to share a different view of ecology, one less ethnocentric and more open to the world. In order to do so, they bore witness by means of words and images. They adopt this approach in order to share their experience via: talks, photographic exhibitions and a documentary film whose release was scheduled for July 2015.

By means of its various methods of sharing, the association On the Green Road offers an other perseptive. Another perspective on emerging countries, another perspective on ecology throughout the world, another perspective on our common challenge: global warming.

The quest to create a documentary guided their journey. With 90 interviews and over 140 hours of film footage, two years were necessary to produce the documentary On the Green Road. This is the synopsis: Siméon and Alexandre, two young cousins set off on their bicycles to discover men and women who because they were confronted with environnemental realities, engage in action for a better future. From Asia to Latin America, via Eastern Europe and the Middle East, they seek out people who, with minimal resources, are working for an ecological transition. Through such diverse issues as drought, deforestation or agroecology, they become aware that such a transition is possible, and indeed already in progress.

Altough living in a difficult socio-political context, this young Iranian, worried about the environmental issues and contamination of his city, Saeid created a local association. Land of Volunteers organises tree plan-tings in his city to raise awareness of the stakes and encourage people to modify their behavior.

THE COLLABORATIVESCREENINGS

Alexandre and Siméon set out to gather sta-tements from women and men so as to share their messages. The two cycling explorers wish their film to be viewed as widely as possible, while remaining faithful to the philosophy of their tour. In the belief that it is essential to distribute the film in a collaborative way, they decided to adopt an alternative approach rather than the standard method of distribu-ting films through cinemas: collaborative orga-nisation of screenings.

AN INNOVATIVE ECONOMIC MODEL

ALTERNATIVEPHILOSOPHY

The diffusion of the documentary-film On the Green Road is an impactful and enjoyable event, and an environmental and multicultu-ral adventure. It is a nice occasion to generate constructive dialogue, network, teach and take viewers on a visual journey.

Screenings of the film On the Green Road are now in the hands of everybody who is inte-rested. Associations, business, volunteers can organise a screening in their local area. The principle of collaborative screenings applies at national and even international level, and seve-ral screenings are already planned abroad. As far as the price is concerned, the association has made a bold choice: people are free to decide it for themselves. The procedure is simple: all you need is a screen, a handful of people to form the audience, and a place open to the general public. With the support of On the Green Road, associations and volunteers can then hold a screening!

Besides the distribution of the film, On the Green Road offer «Un Autre Regard», a photographic ex-hibition. An artistic and sensitive approach which goal is not to be moralizing but to raise environ-mental preservation awareness.

The aim of the artists is to encourage dialogue on this sensitive subject that concerns us all. Viewers are called to question their relationship with the world, with nature and with each other. Throughout the photographs, they infuse ideas, solutions and enhance the implications of citizen action.
