Germs: How do you get them?
Contact
Airborne
Ingestion
Airborne precautions are required for patients known or suspected to be infected by airborne microorganisms.
The door is to remain closed and monitor on
Avoid transporting. If transporting is necessary, the patient must wear a surgical mask
Diagnosed or suspected infections/diseases requiring airborne precautions:• Tuberculosis – suspected or confirmed• Measles• Varicella (chickenpox) plus contact precautions• Herpes zoster* (disseminated disease or localized disease in an immunocompromized patient) plus contact precautions
Germs that cause infection when they land in a susceptible person’s eyes, nose or mouth.
Wear a mask when working within 3 feet of the patient.
Diagnosed or suspected infections/diseases requiring droplet precautions:
• Pertussis• Adenovirus • Influenza• Meningitis • Mumps• Epiglottitis
Spread by oral-fecal route
Organisms include Norovirus, Hepatitis A
Protective Measures:•Use good hand hygiene after using the restroom•Keep hands "out of your face"•Clean environment regularly•Report any gastrointestinal symptoms to the sick line
Germs that come in contact with your skin or other part of your body.

INFLUENZA TYPES
7
INFLUENZA A•Many animal reservoirs•Strains mutate•Associated with pandemics•Pandemics occur /20 years
INFLUENZA B• Human only reservoir• Less mortality than A• Associated with epidemics, not pandemics
INFLUENZA C• Not associated with epidemics• Mild illness

INFLUENZA ASURFACE PROTEINS SURFACE PROTEINS
Hemagglutinin (H) Site of attachment to human cells Antibody to H is protective H1-H15
Neuraminadase (N) Helps to release virions from cells Antibody modifies disease severity N1-N9
