Neil Douglass, Financial Controller

for RENOLIT Cramlington Ltd was

honoured for his charity works by

becoming one of the Olympic

Torchbearers ahead of this years

London 2012 Olympics.

Nominated by someone they know, in

Neil’s case his sister, 8,000 inspirational

people carried the Olympic Flame as it

journeyed across the UK. The Olympic

Flame stands for peace, unity and

friendship.

Neil's nomination storyIn October 2010 Neil's world was turned

upside down when he was diagnosed with

Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML). CML is

an extremely rare type of blood cancer and

had it gone undetected, Neil could have

been dead within three years. In the short

time Neil has been living with this disease

his thoughts turned to raising money for a

charity which is trying to find a cure. Neil

chose Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research

who offer patients like him hope for the

future, hope for a cure and support in the

meantime. Neil is a selfless fighter and

wants to raise money for the charity to help

as many people as possible. So far Neil has

raised nearly £10k since his diagnosis. Neil

has done the Coast 2 Coast Cycle

Challenge, completed his 8th Great North

Run and organised a charity games night

which rose over £3k. Neil's strength and

determination is unbelievable.

Statement from Neil“I was originally nominated in June 2011,

and never thought I would actually be

chosen. I found out in March 2012 that I

had successfully been selected and had

passed all of the security checks. Only then

did I start to realise just how important it

would be to carry the Olympic Torch.

The anticipation built as June 15th

approached and the day itself was amazing.

Thousands of people lined the streets and

cheered me along my stretch of road in

North Shields, Tyne & Wear. It is an

experience I am very lucky to have had and

one I will never forget it. Carrying the

Flame was an incredible honour, only made

possible by the support that friends, family,

colleagues and RENOLIT have shown in

supporting my charity fundraising for

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.”

Keri Merilo, an engineer at RENOLIT

Cramlington Ltd has been awarded a

Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee

Medal for recognition of services

provided to the Blyth all-weather

lifeboat of which he is Head of

Operations and a Coxswain.

The Queen Elizabeth II

Diamond Jubilee Medal was

awarded for having honourable

service in the military, police,

prison, and emergency forces, or

for outstanding achievement in

public service.

In 2004 the RNLI

(Royal National

Lifeboat Institution)

announced the

withdrawal of their

all-weather lifeboat

from the busy port

town of Blyth in

Northumberland in the

Northumberland Coast Area of Natural

Beauty. The area covers 39 miles of some

of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the

country from Berwick to the Coquet estuary

and is home to a host of conservation sites,

including two National Nature Reserves at

Lindesfarne (Holy Island) and the Farne

Islands.

As soon as Keri, an experienced marine

engineer who previously worked for many

years in the Merchant Navy before joining

RENOLIT Cramlington Ltd, heard the news

from the RNLI that they would withdraw

their boat, he immediately

realised the potential dangers

which could occur and set

about forming a group of

people to raise enough money

to buy and run their own

lifeboat from Blyth. It is

believed to be the only all-weather boat

amongst the few lifeboats operating

independently from the RNLI in the UK.

Keri, who devotes the majority of his free

time to running the lifeboat, has now been

deservedly recognised and rewarded with

the award of a Queen’s Jubilee Medal. Since

its launch the Blyth all-weather lifeboat has

been called out on numerous occasions and

in some of the worst weather imaginable to

rescue stricken boats, fishermen, stranded

divers, water-skiers and swimmers and has

undoubtedly saved many lives. The Blyth

all-weather lifeboat is a registered charity

(No. 1124987) and relies completely on

donations. If you would like to make a

NEWSEVENTS

As the momentum builds towards the October 7 – 10 dates at the NEC it is quite evident that visitors are set tobenefit from far more than mere shop windows for the furniture manufacturing and joinery industries.

The positive outlook for an improving future is underlined by the number of exhibitors planning new productlaunches or showcasing machinery and materials for the first time in the UK – Axminster will be presentingtheir range of machines from leading Italian manufacturer Griggio.

One of the most important aspects of the evolution of the parallel W12 shows since 2008 is that the conceptof a forum for ideas exchange has come to the fore. The importance of meeting with suppliers and expertsface to face cannot be under-valued.

This fundamental concept of professional conversation has been given added emphasis by the rapiduptake of time slots at the two Presentation Theatres that have been set up – one in each exhibition.

W12 Working with Design will also be the stage for the inaugural Design in Manufacturing Awards (DIMA)

W12 To Host “International” LaunchW12 Working with Design will be the venue of

SCM Group, the World and UK’s

leading manufacturer and supplier of

Woodworking and Panel Processing

machinery, will take the opportunity

to show their latest machinery

innovations at the W12 Exhibition,

NEC, 7 - 10th October.

Covering an area of 320 square metres,

new machines from the classical machine

range and SCM's Premium Division will all

be running to demonstrate to visitors the

latest developments that have recently taken

place by the SCM Group within their

manufacturing facilities in Italy.

With 2 stands (7C360 and 8C350)

adjacent to the main entrance to W12, the

SCM Group will show the latest technology

that is currently available on the market,

including the Pratix S12/B and Tech Z5/52

CNC Machining Centres, K260 EVO, K600

and S1000 Edge Banders, Profiset 60

Planer Moulder, Verticut Wall Saw and

several new Classical Machines.

The Tech Z5 to be displayed, with a 5-axis

routing head, has a table area of 5200 x

1550mm and is ideal for the production of

customised furniture components and for

the machining of panels. It can also be

equipped with devices

suitable for solid

wood machining

especially for

joinery companies that manufacture stairs

and doors.

Maximum operator convenience and

flexibility of use due to the "PRISMA 5"

routing head that allows easy operation in a

reduced space without the risk of collisions.

Performance and overall dimensions ratio

due to technical solutions such as the

bumpers safety protections and the electric

cabinet that is located within the machine

base.

Productive and compact, the new

Olimpic K 600 is the ideal edge bander for

companies processing and edge banding

large quantities of panels, even if they are of

a different type, as it is designed to work

for many hours consecutively, and fitted

with several devices available to enable fast

changeover from one job to the next with

minimal production downtime.

The RT-E panel edge trimming device

provides a perfect edge to the panels before

edge gluing, due to the use of the front

copying devices that allows a constant

removal of material over the entire panel

length, maintaining the same work piece

geometry, and also includes the ED-

SYSTEM high efficiency exhaust hoods.

The Profiset 60 Planer Moulder is

designed to be very sturdy with up to 6

spindles available and has a generous 230 x

120mm capacity, with feed speeds of 6 / 12

or variable 4 -24 metres/min. The new feed

system using Cardan joints and gearboxes

is the technological heart of this machine

providing higher productivity and an even

better finish to the timber.

Profiset 60 is equipped with a pre-

straightening system through the reference

engraver located on the bottom planer

spindle. Perfect feeding due to the manual

pump for table lubrication and to the

inferior idle roller placed on the outfeed

table as standard features.

SCM's new 'VERTICUT 60', the vertical

panel saw for dynamic, developed panel

cutting requirements, is for customers

seeking a versatile machine capable of

operating in a limited floor space. The

VERTICUT design, developed by SCM, was

based on the desire to make the production

process really simple and easy in any

working condition and combines sturdiness

and smoothness so that this superior

machine now rivals other manufacturer's

models.

Sturdy and with the performance of

much larger machines, including prismatic

guides on both vertical and horizontal

movements, this saw suits all cutting

requirements. The VERTICUT 60 is

available in two versions, one manual and

one automatic with continuous action,

having working dimensions of 4300mm for

horizontal width cutting and 2080mm

horizontal cutting height. Both versions

fully benefit from the 2200mm vertical

cutting height with a working thickness of

60mm to meet the most diverse machining

needs.

SCM's Classical machines to be shown

include the TI155EP Class Spindle Moulder,

S6300 Thicknesser, SI300S Nova and

SI400EP Class Sliding Table Panel Saws.

The W12 show returns to the NEC in

Birmingham this year from 7th – 10th

October and once again HOMAG UK

will be pulling out all the stops with

the largest presence at the show. The

company will be showcasing machines

and software solutions from all of the

HOMAG Group including, BRANDT,

BÜTFERING, LIGMATECH, WEEKE,

HOLZMA and BARGSTEDT, not

forgetting HOMAG itself.

“We will be welcoming guests to our

stands in Hall 7,” explains Simon Brooks,

sales and marketing director of HOMAG

UK. “Here the HOMAG Group’s team of

experts will be on hand to answer any

questions. Visitors will be able to see live

demonstrations of a considerable selection

of machines and software designed to

improve the productivity, quality and profit

for all business sizes.

Efficient processing from start to finish

“We feel that W12 is an extremely

important exhibition. Consequently, we

have, once again, invested in a large area to

present HOMAG City. The exhibition is the

perfect opportunity for us to showcase how

machines from each member of the

HOMAG Group can be integrated together

to create powerful and productive work

lines.”

To demonstrate just how flexible and

beneficial HOMAG Group machines can be

there will be a fully functional work cell at

W12. This work cell will be controlled by

eSolutions, HOMAG Group’s highly

intelligent woodCAD|CAM software which

has been specifically configured to create

efficient order processing and instant

integration to production machinery.

Under the control of the optimisation

software will be the BARGSTEDT TLF 210

automated board stock control system. The

idea behind this machine is to maximise

productivity and minimise downtime in the

area of low batch, make-to-order production

using various board types, colours and

sizes.

After being instructed by eSolutions on

which panels to move, the BARGSTEDT

TLF 210 will feed the HOLZMA HPP 350

saw. Here the board will be quickly and

efficiently cut to size and sent on to the

WEEKE BHX 055 processing centre.

This 3-axis processing centre is equipped

for all drilling needs. With a footprint of

just 5m2, it is extremely compact and yet

packed with all the features of a

conventional CNC. Small enough to fit

comfortably in any production facility, it

also has an equally trim price tag which is

within reach of most manufacturers.

Once the panel has been processed

through this station it will move on to the

BRANDT Ambition 1650 FC single-sided

edgebander. With extremely short set up

times, this is a powerful all round machine

that is ideal for everything from batch size

one production through to office, living and

bedroom furniture.

Finally, the last position on the work cell

will be the versatile LIGMATECH MPH

450 carcass clamp. This flexible and solid

assembly machine is appropriate for both

the craft industries and the industrial

manufacturer. Because of the machines

heavy, solid structure it is a step above the

competition, producing strong, robust

finished products.

Something for all at HOMAG City

“We are keen to show everyone that

HOMAG does not just cater for larger

factories,” explains Simon. “We will have a

R.W. Group, Britain’s leading

independent wood and panel working

machinery supplier, will be launching

major new technology developments on

their stands in Hall 7 at the

forthcoming W12 show.

The most sophisticated throughfeed CNC

system yet from Italian specialist Stema is

able to address all six panel surfaces

randomly and with no set-up delays. Panels

of all dimensions can be loaded with each

individually ‘read’ and automatically

gripper adjusted for machining ... time after

time!

Also at W12 will be Anderson’s latest

Selexx pro nesting line with full automatic

loading and unloading of panels using the

latest auto-pusher system which can, say

Anderson, virtually double machine

productivity. Completed nests of panels or

timber components are transported out of

the working area to allow instant

reloading for the next

processing cycle.

This new Selexx is

outstanding, say RW

Machines, in

circumstances where a robustly efficient yet

affordable CNC solution is needed.

Orma’s latest membrane press model

will be shown on the stand at W12 finishing

shaped door panels and Giben’s new ‘K

Series’ edgebander from the recently

launched Giben Edge range will be set up

for high speed processing of 2mm PVC.

Also demonstrated on the stand at W12 will

be Vitap’s new generation of Eclipse

edgebander technology for edgefinishing

shapes that was launched at W10 and will

also be shown in its latest upgrade form.

And also new from Vitap on the RW

Machines stand at W12 will be the Italian

company’s latest Point 2 Point boring

system that will be shown drilling from

the underside of

the panel and

moving work

seamlessly

throught the cycle on Vitap’s latest and

newly patented throughfeed belt transport

system. Vitap say that this new boring set

up is the ideal tool for the complete range

of cabinet panel parts including corners,

stretcher rails, doors and drawer front

panels; it saves on floor space, is

simplicity itself to operate and is the ideal

low cost solution.

Also from Vitap will be their exciting new

Bridge system plus the very latest carcass

press from Bonacin - their new Closer

semi-auto system. There will be a lot to see

at W12 that is new and exclusive from RW

Machines.

David Colman, Managing Director of Triesse Ltd, explained that‘manufacturing today has become increasingly competitive.Production processes have to be squeezed for every last pound perhour and for one more component per shift. Better productionmachinery is one of the few remaining areas where significantgains can be made. So, to maintain our manufacturing leadership,we purchased the latest ah8 cut-to-size plant technology fromSchelling UK Ltd’.

Achieving a high degree of automation is becoming even more vitalto guarantee a continuous flow of material in a modernmanufacturing facility. Born out of this philosophy comesSchelling’s automatic internal turning device which allows for headcut patterns without any interruption to the production flow. Oncethe head cut is made, the feeder pushes the head cut out and pullsthe rest of the board back over the turning device. Furthermore thebuffer between the rip cut and cross cut angular transfer increasesthe capacity immensely as both saws can cut simultaneously whilestrips are prepared for both saws. The advantages identified byTriesse include shorter cycle times, reduced manual handling andbetter utilisation of material. Just to push productivity even further,a separate push-off carriage simultaneously loads the rip-cut saw tokeep production continuously moving. The whole of the Schellingah8 is characterised by numerous automatically monitoredfunctions all designed to provide optimal productivity.

Triesse want the best possible solution for fast throughput of largerorders while at the same time retaining the option of small batchproduction, both with the highest dimensional cutting accuracy.Assisted by automatic cutting speed which is adjustable accordingto the book height both these options were easily achieved. Withthe aid of innovative technology such as double strip aligners and apowerful 32kW motor performance, the ah8 cut-to-size plant isideal for both production scenarios, in short: an all-rounder in theindustrial field.

Against a background of keen competition the importance oforganising the sawing operation was vital to achieving theproduction targets set by Triesse. Schelling’s design andengineering department made it possible and customised the ah8plant to fit into the space provided; crucially without leaving outany production material buffer zones which ensure everymovement is optimised.

Markus Freuis Managing Director of Schelling UK Ltd, explained,‘that no two plants are ever the same’. Each cut-to-size plant isdesigned according to the customer’s wishes and adapted to theirrequirements and space conditions. Solid conceptualisation combinedwith well thought-out details ensures a future-proof and highlyprofitable investment. At Triesse we knew that material loading andhandling were essential performance characteristics which wouldincrease the efficiency of the cut-to-size plant. This is why the plantwas designed with the option of thin loading and many moreadditional features to ensure flexibility and help increasedproductivity. Schelling’s goal is to give each customer what they wantand more.

Of particular importance to Triesse is the ability to cut an extensiverange of dimensions, materials and thicknesses. Because the ah8plant is fully automated it has the flexibility to change from onematerial to another at the drop of a hat with the accuracy and capacityrequired by a volume producer.

The whole sawing process is orchestrated by the latest controlsoftware (MCS Evolution). This allows the operator to see a real-timesimulation of the whole machine working – which features clearoperator guidance, with moving graphics on a large 22” TFT screen. This real time visualisation helps reduce operating errors, leavingmore time for the operator to focus on production. Key to theincreased efficiency is the High Performance Optimisation software(HPO) which delivers measurable performance improvements to thematerial production yield, utilisation of material and overall cuttingtime. This concentrated bundle of software and modern technologydelivers measurable improvements and actually helps run themachine without any big interference from the operator.

To summarize David, explained, ‘working together with Schelling theaim was to generate a cutting philosophy that delivered qualityimprovements, cost reductions, capacity increases, space benefits anda reduction in manual handling: we have achieved everything andmore and are ready for tomorrows business’.

Founded over 35 years ago as a supplier of wood based panel products, Triesse has expanded to become one of theUK's leading independent specialist wood based panel processors and veneered, laminated board manufacturers. Animportant part of Triesse’s growth and continuing success has been its choice of highly reliable production machineryincluding their latest investment in the Schelling ah8 cut-to-size plant.

Paul Haslam is a bespoke kitchen and

bedroom designer and manufacturer

with studios in Jersey and London.

Since 1986, the family-run business has

been designing and creating high

quality custom-made kitchens and

other free-standing furniture at its

Jersey manufacturing base, using only

the finest materials and never

compromising on quality.

The designs have evolved alongside

changing trends over the past 25 years and,

by developing construction and finishing

methods, Paul Haslam is now able to offer

a wide range of styles to suit almost any

requirement.

Investment in machinery and equipment

is important to the company, and Paul

Haslam has recently invested in both a

Kündig Brilliant 2 wide-belt sander and a

Kündig Uniq-S edge sander.

“We used to use a single-belt wide-belt

sander, but it had no automatic settings,”

director, James Haslam, commented. “The

machine was getting to the end of its

lifespan and we were looking at upgrading,

ideally to a dual belt sander.”

James’s research led him to Kündig, and

everything he read about the quality of

Kündig sanders was backed up through a

personal recommendation received by Paul

Haslam, company founder and James’s

father. This led to a visit to Switzerland, to

view the Kündig range at the company’s

Wetzikon factory.

“We had a fantastic trip,” recalled James.

“It was very interesting to

see the factory, as well as

fully functioning

demonstration models from

the entire range.”

James reported that he had

gone to Switzerland already

knowing that he wanted a

Brilliant sander, but not yet

ready to upgrade the

company’s existing edge

sander. However, there was a

particular option on the

Uniq which made it

irresistible. “Having seen both machines in

operation we decided to purchase both of

them, even though we only went there for

the Brilliant,” said James.

“We took along a piece of test door which

had come straight off assembly here: in one

pass it went from being an assembled door

to a fully finished door ready for spraying.

That was impressive!

“The factory was fantastic. The

meticulous attention to detail is echoed in

the machines. The flawless build quality

sets them apart from the competition.”

Describing sanding operations at the

Paul Haslam workshop, James said: “Apart

from operations such as hand and orbital

sanding, we have always used two large

machines: a wide-belt sander, which is

necessary for sanding doors and worktops,

as well as any panel that requires sanding,

while the edge sander is mainly used for

finishing edges. The wide-belt sander is our

main machine: that gets

through a lot of work on

a daily basis. The edge

sander is great for

cleaning workpieces up,

such as shelf edges.

“The great thing about

the Uniq edge sander is

that it has an automated

feed, so instead of

pushing through

manually and trying to

apply a constant

pressure by hand, the

automated feed belt ensures that all

pressure is even, and this produces a much

better finish.

“The design of the edge sander is what

our operators have been most impressed

with! The edge sander has a tilting function

which we will be looking to use in the

future, but the feed system is the thing the

operators have been going crazy about: they

think it is fantastic!”

Asked to describe the advantages the two

Kündig sanders have brought the company,

James said, “In particular, over our previous

sanders, I would say consistency of output.

The Brilliant is certainly quicker to operate!

“It did take us a while, and to be honest

we are still fine tuning the settings to suit

our particular requirements, but the

Brilliant has sped up sanding in general

because it has automated height

adjustments and the presets: less time is

required for the operator to enter

information, because this is taken care of

by the sensors and presets, so this saves

time.

“What I quite like with the presets is you

can customise many attributes of the

machine to suit a particular job. All our

drawer boxes are hand made and

dovetailed: they go through the machine.

They have a different setting from the

doors, so with a preset the machine can

automatically adjust itself from the door

setting to the drawer box setting, adjusting

feed speed, stock removal and belt speed as

well. You can make adjustments without

Adjusting the settings – the second belt can be set to either straight or to anangle of 10 degrees

having to remember the settings each time:

you can quickly get to the result you need.

“Also, the quality of the end result is

without question superior to the previous

wide belt sander. You just have to inspect a

door after going through the Kündig sander

to see this! We are presently doing two

passes on each side of the door, but once we

fully understand the sander, we can

probably get it down to one.

“Because this particular sander is a twin

belt sander, the first belt is used for

roughing, taking away the majority of the

stock using a 120 grit paper, while the

second belt, which is used for finishing, is

much finer and achieves a really smooth

finish. In one pass you get both the

roughing and finishing operations, whereas

with a one-belt sander you need to change

belts between operations, and send the

workpiece through several times, in order

to get the final finish.

“The key thing with sanding large panels

is to have two operators, one at the front

and one at the back taking off workpieces

and stacking them up, so the fewer passes

you can do, the more time you can save. So

it is useful to be able to minimise the

number of passes.

“Another advantage is the oblique setting,

where the second belt can be set to an either

straight or to an angle of 10 degrees. On a

traditional sander, the sanding belt will

transfer any flaw to the workpiece. The

oblique sanding is a very clever design

making a much more even result.

“And the segmental

sanding pad is good for

the veneered material,

especially material that

requires just a very slight

clean. This is a function of

the second belt. The

veneer is very thin so you

don’t want to go through it

and hit the MDF. The

sanding pad is very good

for getting a light touch,

and the accuracy of the

sander makes that work well. You can use

expensive materials with confidence.”

Describing the daily workload of the

sanders, James said of the Brilliant: “It is

really a day to day workhorse. All the doors

go through there, both sides: our frames

tend to go through there just to remove the

lines from the material. You can’t avoid

picking up machining lines from the

moulder: the Brilliant removes them.

“Carcass material is already finished to a

high standard, but anything solid goes

through the machine several times: drawer

fronts as well —anything that needs a really

uniform finish.

“We did an interesting project with very,

very fine veneers used to wrap a curved

unit. We created a complex curved unit with

curved drawer fronts and a curved carcass,

and the way we applied a veneer onto the

drawer fronts was we built up the drawer

fronts from ply and then sanded down the

veneers very thin: we got it so fine that we

could wrap it onto our curved drawer front,

and then apply it.”

He continued: “One of the Kündig’s key

strong points is the accuracy you can get

with the height adjustment, down to 0.1

mm. A lot of machines will say a tenth, but

you have to adjust it manually; the Kündig

is very accurate.”

Planning for the future, James is looking

forward to extending the use of the preset

functions.

Summing up, James said: “The Kündig

sanders are both fantastic, there is no

question about that. They are certainly at

the top of their field, and they have a very

good reputation. We were sure we were

going for a good product anyway, and the

visit to Switzerland confirmed that.

“My father, who founded the company,

had not seen one of the machines in the

flesh until it arrived, and he was taken back

with the quality: he was very impressed.”

And asked if we would recommend the

company and the machines, James replied:

“Yes, definitely. The whole company was a

pleasure to deal with. I haven’t dealt so

much with Carl O’Meara in the UK, but I

do know that he has been very helpful, and

Stephan Kündig in Switzerland was a

delight to deal with. I would definitely

recommend Kündig to anyone wanting to

invest in a high quality sander.”

In a deal that is set to transform the

UK market for solid wood machinery,

Leicester based Advanced Machinery

Services (AMS) has won the exclusive

distribution rights for Kentwood, the

No.1 selling moulder in the US market.

The agreement sees AMS offering the

complete range of Kentwood moulders,

planers, grinders, rip saws, software

and automation solutions throughout

the UK and Ireland.

The Kentwood brand was developed for

Stiles Machinery Inc., the world's largest

independent distributor of advanced CNC

equipment for processing wood panels,

solid wood, wood composites, plastic, glass,

stone, and other materials.

Founded in 1965, Stiles currently has a

turnover in excess of $300 million and

offers a Total Production SolutionsSM

approach to manufacturing, from

equipment integration and manufacturing

consulting to education, service and parts.

The company’s philosophy is to help

businesses succeed – whether through

equipment solutions, new technology or

educational opportunities.

“This deal is a major feather in our cap,”

enthuses Steve Foster a director and

founder of AMS. He continues, “Kentwood

accounts for over 60% of all moulders sold

in North America. The brand, developed as

a real alternative to the established

European manufactured machines,

focuses on top build quality combined with

high specification as standard. For AMS to

secure this exclusive deal is fantastic news

for the future of our company.

“Co-director Steve McGloin and I have

worked tirelessly to make this happen and

we are delighted that such a dominant

player in the solid wood market has put its

faith in us to take the fight to its European

competitors.

“To promote the deal we have taken a

significant stand at this year’s W12

exhibition in Birmingham where we will be

demonstrating the products and looking for

suitable distributors, particularly for the

Irish market.”

Designed to take on the best from Europe

In order to compete with the established

and respected market leading brands in

Europe, the Kentwood team has developed

features to make machine setup and

operation quick and easy. These include

what they term ‘Quick Set’ features and

sophisticated software solutions.

Co-founder and director of AMS, Steve

McGloin, takes up the story. “The

Kentwood machines have been designed to

be simple and efficient. Controlled via an

easy to use touch screen, the sophisticated

software makes the operation of these

machines child’s play. Adjusting the

spindle location and top load elements is

very straightforward. The three major

settings can be completed using one ‘crank’

handle. Small graphic display panels on the

front of the machine feature animated

arrows to show the operator which way to

turn the crank handle to set up the

machine. It couldn’t be easier.”

(Watch the YouTube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnDGQNlt6_M)

A real choice for the market“Our association with Stiles goes back to

our days at Wadkin. We have visited the

Stiles Kentwood team at their head office in

Grand Rapids, Michigan on a number of

occasions to help with product

development. This has resulted in AMS

having significant input into the

specification of the latest moulder range.

“However, it doesn’t stop there. Last year

we purchased the intellectual design rights

to the former Wadkin moulders and

grinders and we are looking to use Stiles’

experience and designs to develop these

products further,” explains McGloin.

Until now, customers looking for a one

stop shop for a turnkey machinery and

material handling system have had limited

options. With the deal AMS has secured for

the Kentwood Total Production

SolutionsSM there is a real alternative.

The Kentwood associated equipment

range includes planer/moulders, material

handling systems, optimising cross cuts,

toolroom grinders and template makers.

The modular material handling systems

can be integrated with existing moulders, re

saws and multi rips to greatly increase

productivity through the introduction of

simple in-feed and out-feed handling

systems.

Alternatively, Kentwood can design and

develop Total Production SolutionsSM for

complete production lines. These can

incorporate machinery (moulders/re

saws/multi rips), automation, control

software, raw material de-stacking through

to bar coding, wrapping and packing. These

production lines are laid out and tested in

full in the Kentwood factory for final

customer sign-off. With numerous

installations already in full production in

North America, AMS can arrange for

potential UK customers to view these sites

in the States to get firsthand experience of

the benefits they offer.

Part of a long-term planFor AMS, this deal is one of several key

pieces in an ambitious expansion plan as

Steve Foster explains, “Since 2007 we have

established a strong track record as a

provider of first class service support in the

UK woodworking industry. Our strategy

going forward is to support this with a

growing machine sales operation, taking

advantage of the famous Bursgreen brand

launched early this year and now, in the

solid wood machine market, with

Kentwood.

“To ensure the success of this venture

and underline our long-term commitment,

we have commissioned a new purpose built

unit in Leicestershire. This state-of-the-art

facility will house our head office,

showroom and training operations on one

site at Skeffington Mill.

“The coming months are going to be

tremendously exciting for the AMS team

and we are eagerly looking forward to

working with our network of distributors to

ensure the success of the famous Kentwood

brand in the UK and Ireland. In these

challenging economic times the build

quality and high specification of the

Kentwood product combined with first class

service from AMS will cement a bright

future for this powerful partnership,”

concludes Foster.

The MitreX double mitre fence by

MARTIN has been newly developed to

perform mitre cuts quickly and easily.

Clever details such as simple length

compensation for common angles as well

as the tear-out prevention block make

perfectly clear that experts have been at

work here.

The MitreX double mitre fence by

MARTIN is equipped with a big angle scale

that can be adjusted very precisely and

mitres can be cut from two sides quickly

and easily. The ana-log double mitre fence

will be also available in a digital version by

the end of the year.

A precise angle cut is one thing, exact

length compensation of the workpiece is also

nec-essary in most cases. That is why length

compensation for 10 predefined angles from

0° to 67.5° is provided. The fence stops can

be set on both sides allowing for cutting

lengths of 90 to 1,400 mm. The angles can

be easily set by 1/10° with a magnifying glass.

The sturdy yet lightweight and small

anodized aluminum execution of the

MARTIN MitreX fence ensures good

visibility over the entire working area. The

integrated tear-out preven-tion block prevents

tear-outs of the workpiece and can also be

used for cuts based on marks.

MitreX can be mounted on every MARTIN

sliding table saw by simple one-hand

clamping from construction year 2001 or the

T73 series onward. Older machines or

machines from other manufacturers might

also be equipped with this fence.

Combilift will be at W12 with three

machines from its wide range of 4-way

forklifts on stand 6F 725. Given the

company’s reputation for innovation

there will naturally be new models

and features amongst the exhibits, so

if you want to improve handling

procedures whilst at the same time

increasing productivity a visit to the

stand is a must.

The timber sector was one of the first to

recognise the benefits of Combilift’s tailor

made approach to materials handling, and

the range of products on offer is as varied

as the differing requirements in the

industry itself. From heavy duty operation

in the harsh environments of sawmills to

the precision manufacturing of furniture

and staircases - there is a Combilift model

to suit your requirements.

Combilift supplies machines with

capacities from 2.5 up to 25 tonnes, but the

focus of the exhibits this year is on the

smaller to medium sized trucks which have

proved to be the most suitable for the

industry. The 4t capacity original and core

C4000 model will be displayed alongside a

larger capacity SL sideloader model. This

offers superior manoeuvrability over

conventional sideloaders and improves

storage density for maximum use of all

available space both inside and out.

The Combi-CB was the first

counterbalance design truck to incorporate

the benefits of 4-way technology, and this

was recognised by the UK Forklift Truck

Association which awarded it a unique

gold, “winner of winners” prize this year for

having made the most outstanding

contribution to the industry. If you are not

yet familiar with the CB range, the show is

an ideal opportunity to get a close look at

this award winner. Developed for those

needing to handle a combination of both

long loads and palletised goods, it can also

work inside containers for rapid unloading

of deliveries.

The company will be showcasing the

proven energy-saving extraction

optimisation system developed by

California-based Ecogate, Inc. and visitors

will be able to witness demonstrations on

how the system operates and discuss its

benefits with specialist engineers.

Ecogate Ltd has been formed as a

provider of Ecogate products and services to

dust and fume extraction manufacturers

and installers throughout the UK and

Europe. Authorised Installers can purchase

the complete Ecogate product range,

including variable speed drives and cabling.

Ecogate Ltd offers its partners training on

energy-saving surveys, installation and

commissioning. And, for those not wishing

to take on those responsibilities, Ecogate

will carry out the processes on their behalf.

Chris Oldfield, managing director of

Ecogate Ltd, says: Ecogate has an impressive

track record in the UK and we want to share

the experiences gained from their

application in the joinery and furniture

manufacturing sector over the last two years.

We are looking forward to establishing

working relationships with leading dust

extraction companies and installers.

The company claims that installing an

ECOGATE ‘Extraction-on-Demand’ system

will slash electricity bills by up to 80% and

will typically pay for itself in just two years.

In most workshops, as little as 50% of

machinery may be in operation at any given

time, but dust extraction usually runs at full

capacity, with fixed fan speed, all of the

time. The outcome is an extraction system

which is likely to be consuming more

electricity than all the lights and all the

machinery put together. An Ecogate system

employs a central controller, automatic

motorised gates, remote machine sensors

and variable speed technology. When a

woodworking machine is turned on, the

sensor signals the controller to open the

motorised gate of that particular machine to

provide extraction and the controller

determines the optimum fan speed. The

result is an optimised system that only uses

energy when required.

A joinery company in Norwich has

replaced three wood waste heaters with

brand new ones from Wood Waste

Technology.

Pronto Joinery provides both the general

public and trade with wooden replacement

windows and doors from its purpose built

factory in Horsford. The company has used

wood waste burners for many years, but

wanted to replace its existing heaters with

newer ones to benefit from enhanced

technology and efficiency. Having heard

excellent reviews about the range of heaters

manufactured by Wood Waste Technology,

the team contacted Kurt Cockroft for more

information.

Pronto Joinery converts all its wood waste

into briquettes, which are loaded into three

wood waste burners that generate enough

heat to keep the 25 employees warm during

the winter. Any excess briquettes are bagged

and sold to the public via a number of local

supermarkets and other outlets supplied by

Pronto Joinery.

Following a site survey, three new Wood

Waste Technology WT15 heaters were ordered

and delivered to Norwich. Installation was

easy, as the old heaters were just removed and

replaced with new ones, which were then

connected to the original ducting to allow the

warm air from the wood waste burners into

the factory during colder months.

Peter Scott, MD of

Pronto Joinery Ltd says, “As

a company, we’re very

proud that we recycle all our

timber waste. Whilst it’s

great for the environment

that we don’t need to use

any valuable fossil fuels like

coal and oil for heat, it’s also

good for our company as it

saves us money on heating

bills and skip charges, plus

provides an additional

income stream into the

business from the sale of

the excess briquettes”.

The new heaters have been in the factory

just over a year, so have had their first annual

maintenance service. Peter comments,

“We’ve been delighted with the high level of

customer service we’ve received from Wood

Waste Technology – they’ve been a great

company to deal with, from initial purchase

right through to the first service. The new

heaters have been well worth the investment,

as they seem to be much stronger and more

reliable than the previous ones.”

Wood Waste Technology’s years of

expertise in wood waste solutions have helped

many companies reduce their waste disposal

and heating costs. As well as offering site

survey, design, manufacture, installation and

on-going maintenance for new units, the

company also services all types of wood waste

heaters and supplies genuine spares up to

60% cheaper than other suppliers.

Director Jürgen Hauger and Vollmer UK's

Managing Director Peter Allen. The

informative presentations provided

customers with an insight into the

company's products and ongoing

developments as well as providing

technological knowledge transfer for the

visitors.

To complement the presentations, the

visitors were given an extensive tour of

Vollmer's manufacturing facility. The

company tour provided visitors with an

insight into what is behind the Vollmer

name, as well as an awareness of the

ongoing R&D work that enables Vollmer to

maintain its position as a world leader in

the provision of machine tools for

processing PCD and TCT cutting tools,

circular saw blades and bandsaw blades.

The tour of the 29,000sq/m plant

commenced at the 'goods in' department.

An area that instantly demonstrated how

Vollmer implements

flexible workflow systems

throughout the entire

business. With a machine

tool lead time of six to

eight weeks dependent

upon machine model, the

innovative workflow

system is a critical

element of the business.

To highlight the accuracy

of the workflow system,

Vollmer has an automated

and 'live' storage facility

that has over 80,000

stored components with

6000 part movements each day.

This finely tuned system enables Vollmer

to supply its production lines and end users

with spare parts as soon as they are

required. This part storage facility includes

the storage of parts for all machine tools

dating back to the 1950's, regardless of

whether the machine is still in production

or now obsolete.

With over 500 employees at its

headquarters in Biberach, Vollmer has over

80 staff employed in the R&D division with

another department dedicated to prototype

work to support the R&D work. With

almost 20% of the company's staff and 10%

of its turnover re-invested in R&D.

With such talent and ingenuity in its

R&D and prototyping departments, Vollmer

was keen to inform visitors of new

developments that have been added to its

existing machine tool range. The award

winning QXD200 and

QXD400 erosion and

polishing machine tools

have now received

extended functionality for

processing PCD drills

and cutting tools with a

high shear angle, whilst

manufacturers of circular

saws will be provided

with added functionality

for scoring saws.

The market leading

QXD machine has been a

major success for Vollmer since its market

introduction in 2009. For visitors working

with the QM machine, the predecessor of

the QXD, the QXD undoubtedly aroused

interest. With improved motion systems,

automation systems and software

strategies, Vollmer estimates that erosion

with the QXD is now at least 30% faster

than grinding.

The Vollmer visitors that included some

of the UKs leading PCD tooling and TCT

blade manufacturers, were given

demonstrations on new innovations and

integrating new technology to existing

plant, plus tutorials on the new product

lines. The impressive Tech Centre not only

enabled customers to get a taste of the latest

innovations but also receive technical

support in an environment dedicated to

supporting the end users.

Vollmer UK will be aiming to further

develop its relationships with the respective

companies to ensure that its UK customer

base are fully informed and employing the

technologies and philosophies that will

enable customers to supply cutting tools for

the wood cutting industry that are beyond

the productivity and capabilities of their

competitors.

Following installation of an AXYZ

CAMTECH Z7 router, Somerset-based

Traditional Timber Tradesmen has seen

a significant increase in production

and greater access to new business

opportunities. Established in 2000, the

company specialises in the production

of bespoke carpentry and joinery,

ranging from timber-frame buildings

and associated structures to the

restoration of listed buildings.

In addition to conventional day-to-day

work, the company is now firmly

established in the growing niche market

for small portable buildings. Entry into this

sector followed a commission 11 years ago

to produce a replica Victorian bathing

machine, followed by a shepherd’s hut

which in turn led to the creation of a timber

home office unit known as ‘The Hut’ and

more recently to ‘The E-Den’ log cabin used

primarily by the burgeoning ‘Glamping’ (a

term used to describe devotees of a more

glamorous and comfortable form of

camping) outdoor leisure market.

In the creation of this cabin, the AXYZ

router was used to carry out a wide range of

production requirements. Founder and

Director of Traditional Timber Tradesmen,

John Tucker commented: ‘The CAMTECH

Z7 is used for all aspects of the

manufacture of ‘The E-Den’ cabin, from the

pattern-making of traditional components,

shaping of all internal wall panels

(including cut-out sections for electrical

sockets and so forth) and the construction

of the curved-top storm-proof stable-type

door featuring a wave-patterned rebate.

This innovation would have been

impossible to carry out by hand and use of

the router truly elevated the entire project

in terms of creativity and overall quality.’

The AXYZ CAMTECH Z7 router is a

full-sized entry-level system that shares

many of the advanced production tools and

machining capabilities of AXYZ’ higher-

end, higher productivity but consequently

more expensive routing solutions.

Significantly, it has the same robust

construction based on a welded steel frame

plus a cost-sensitive set of machining

configurations that will effectively handle a

wide range of materials, including solid

woods, particle and foamed boards, non-

ferrous metals, plastics and their

derivatives, used for both 2D and 3D

designs. It also includes as a standard

feature the latest A2MC Control System.

This is said to represent a huge

advancement in machine control

technology by offering the highest

attainable control capabilities by

comparison with any similarly positioned

system on the market. The A2MC delivers

much faster and smoother motion based on

S-Curve (Seven Segment Velocity)

trajectories, resulting in a significant

reduction in ‘bounce’ and vibration caused

by sudden acceleration or deceleration often

experienced with other machine control

systems.

John Tucker added: ‘The AXYZ router is

also used extensively for other work

undertaken. This includes cutting MDF,

plywood and timber components for other

joinery companies, as well as supplying

sign manufacturers with ACU and acrylic

shapes, letters and engraved timber

signage.’

The AXYZ CAMTECH router installed at

Traditional Timber Tradesmen uses

ArtCAM Express software from Delcam,

with a machine upgrade likely once work

increases to warrant the investment. John

Tucker concluded: ‘Purchasing the router

has made a big impact on our business by

opening up new markets and increasing

our productivity which hopefully will be

reflected in the future profitability of our

business.’

Fürstenberg Holz, one of Europe’s

leading producers of export crates and

bespoke packaging, has adopted

Norbord’s Sterling OSB as one of its

main raw materials.

The company, based in Hüfingen,

Germany, which started using Sterling OSB in

1999, manufactures crates and boxes which

clients use to transport their products around

the world in standard shipping containers.

“Each of our customers has his/her own

idea of what a transport crate looks like and

what inherent qualities it should have”, says

Fürstenberg Holz sales manager, Michael

Luib. “But one thing all our customers want

is a crate that is strong and robust”, he adds.

Norbord has responded to market

requirements by offering OSB grades that

are specially tailored to the packaging sector.

OSB has a high load carrying capacity,

excellent bending strength and is easy to

machine. It is therefore an ideal packaging

material. From Fürstenberg Holz’s point of

view, the advantage of Norbord’s Sterling

OSB lies in the large sizes available which

allow it to cover and protect larger parts.

“We introduced a larger board size of

1,250/2,070 x 2,800 mm to the German

market about a year ago, specifically for the

packaging industry,” says Daniel Wagner,

Norbord product manager for packaging

systems. “Our customers have responded

positively to our large sizes because it

means packaging can be produced for

larger shipments without cutting waste,

making it cheaper.

“On top of that, there’s no need to patch

boards together and that avoids creating

‘rupture points’ that make the packaging

unstable” he adds.

Fürstenberg Holz uses Sterling OSB for a

huge variety of crate designs – it has around

10,000 CNC programmes for the differently-

shaped products the many customers

produce. The automobile industry is an

important sector and Fürstenberg Holz has

designed highly specialised crates for all

kinds of components - from windscreens to

engine assemblies.

The company has also developed a “folding

crate” made from Sterling OSB that is

delivered flat-packed to the customer who

then assembles it without the aid of tools

when preparing its goods for dispatch. This

considerably reduces the freight space

required to transport the crate to the customer.

Made from timber grown in sustainably-

managed European forests, Sterling OSB is

cost-competitive and has excellent strength

and stability thanks to its cross-directional

orientation of the thin slivers of wood veneer

that make up its structure.

Koch have a new addition to the Sprint

series of drilling and dowelling

machines – the Sprint Smart.

Born out of requests from customers for

a compact machine that allows for the

machining of longer work pieces when

required, without having to go to the

expense of a much larger machine. Koch

have achieved this by having side and

centre fences which can be manually raised

and lowered for reference positioning of the

workpiece; they can also be lowered level

with the table to allow longer workpieces to

be positioned on the machine and

processed. The table size between the outer

fences is 1,300mm giving solid support to

the workpiece. Customers also requested

the facility to drill and dowel but also to

have a vertical drilling station to cater for

Knock Down fittings if required.

With the vertical drilling unit on, it is

easy to make drawboxes on the machine

piece part style, without having to re-

position the workpiece; 3 sided or 4 sided

drawers can be made easily and

economically.

As the Sprint Smart comes with these

features as standard in a fixed specification

machine it has allowed Koch to use

standard components in the machine and

make it very competitively

priced. The machine is flexible,

productive and compact,

without compromising the

quality and accuracy that Koch

is renowned for.

Programming of the

machine is simple and on

screen graphics give a useful

aid to the operator.

The Sprint Smart machine

can be used for drilling panel

products or solid timber and is extremely

quick, with a drill/dowel speed of less than

two seconds per dowel.

Equipped with 4 workfields, horizontal

drilling, gluing and dowel insertion

together with a vertical drill unit and side

fences which can be lowered, the Koch

Smart machine would be very versatile in

any workplace.

Durable, quality products that stand

the test of time and offer innovative

solutions are what today’s specifiers

need, writes David Newton of Brio

UK, the leading bi-folding door

hardware manufacturer

Bi-folding doors are the rapidly growing

product sector in both domestic and

commercial settings where the illusion of

space created by ‘inviting’ the outside in

and the inside out is adding that little bit

of bit of extra magic that can lift a project

form the ordinary to the extraordinary.

Heavy, expensive timber and glass

doors, however, call for hardware that is

up to the job. They represent a purchase

that should last a long time so the best

possible quality hardware must be

sourced. Spending a little more on a

quality product with a long guarantee and

life expectancy is often more cost effective

in the long term.

Door hardware needs to be aesthetically

pleasing, durable and reasonably priced.

Architects and specifiers will always

demand products that tick many boxes –

visual appearance is important, as well as

durability of the product but in the main

they will be looking for a product that

looks good, and can also offer years of

trouble free use.

The product must be really easy to use;

if a small child cannot operate it easily

then it is not up to the job. Any quality

hardware manufacturer will have

minutely studied the chain of use when

designing its

products.

Choose a hardware

manufacturer that can

offer products that are

flexible and which is

willing to adapt its

products to work with

various materials

thereby allowing the

specifier the freedom

to think outside the

box.

BRIO is the global

brand leader with a full

range of architectural sliding & folding

door hardware for both domestic and

commercial sites and applications and is

based in a new purpose built site in

Newcastle where it will manufacture and

hold extensive stock levels.

We manufacture to order for our

customers as well as holding high levels

of stock to ensure product availability at

all time. We are targeting the architect,

joinery manufacturing and patio door

marketplaces and are currently in advance

discussions with a variety of strategically

placed stockists.

We are aiming to show that our range

of design-engineered products deliver

high performance whatever the extremes

of UK climatic conditions. Our sliding

and folding door hardware is made to last

and carries a variety of approvals which

either meet or exceed national and

international

standards.

Brio products being

launched include the

Weatherfold 4s – this

is a new generation of

the Weatherfold

Coastal Elite product,

which has been

available in the UK for

a number of years now.

Brio Weatherfold 4s

has been designed to

be secure – with added

security features, as

well as a new height adjustment system

for easy installation. Weatherfold 4s is

acknowledged to be a leading hardware

model for Bi-folding doors in Timber,

Aluminium and Aluclad materials.

Another Brio product is Timberoll –

this is a traditional system for straight

sliding timber patio type doors. It’s a

simple, well-engineered bottom rolling

system which offers a cost effective

alternative to lift and slide systems, and

incorporates the Brio interlocker product

for an effective weather seal.

Single Run from Brio is a well-

engineered top hung system available in a

number of weight capacities. It is suitable

for internal and external applications in

both Domestic and Commercial

developments.

Brio UK also offers a full 10-year

warranty on all products.

We are offering the UK a

comprehensive range of products. We are

a company focused on bringing

adventurous ideas to life, converting the

conceptual thoughts of our customers into

exciting reality. We are a solutions

company and a leader in design and

quality.

Brio Opens The Door To Quality

Page 38: Panel and Joinery Production - Sept/Oct 2012

James Latham started to introduce

Combilift 4-way forklifts into its

depots over ten years ago when it

decided to replace a combination of

sideloaders and counterbalance trucks

to achieve better storage density and

improve overall handling procedures.

The initial projects were so successful

that Combilifts are now Latham’s

preferred trucks, with around 50 in

operation at the company’s 10 sites

across the country. The latest addition

is a fleet of six 4 tonne machines for

the newly opened Leeds depot.

With a footprint of 69,000ft the Leeds

depot is slightly smaller than the former

Ossett site, but an impressive 39% more

storage space has been achieved. “The key

element for the extra capacity was the ability

to store the whole of our wide product range

as high as possible,” says Director Andrew

Wright, “and close collaboration with

Combilift’s Tommy Cadden and the

company’s design engineers, racking

provider Stakapal and Latham personnel

such as Andy Duffin enabled us to realise

this by installing the top beam of racking to

9.3m, the highest at any of our depots.

Guided aisle systems have also enabled us to

keep aisle widths at a minimum in certain

areas of the warehouse to further maximise

available space.”

James Latham has a standard

specification for its Combilifts – the C4000

4 tonne capacity LPG powered model,

which enables trucks to be moved around

from one depot to another if necessary. Due

to the demands of lifting full loads to the

top bay of racking it was initially thought

that larger trucks would be needed for this

particular application, but Combilift

engineers incorporated extra capacity into

the Leeds trucks, which have a 9.3m mast

height, whilst maintaining the same

physical dimensions as the rest of the fleet.

“This is just one example of Combilift’s

flexibility to accommodate our very specific

requirements,” says Andrew Wright.

The combination of guide rails fitted to

aisles and rollers on the trucks offer the

advantages of quicker access and travel down

the aisles for drivers as well as a greatly

reduced the risk of product damage.

Combilift and Stakapal came up with a new

system to replace the traditional steel

elements with new style larger diameter

polyurethane rollers and rubber mounted

lead-in sections which improves shock

absorption, reduces steel on steel wear and

which also results in much quieter operation.

Other features on the Combilifts include

hydraulically operated fork positioners for

easy in-cab adjustment to handle the

varying sizes of panel products and packs of

timber, and telescopic forks have been fitted

to some of the trucks for manouevering

larger panels with a depth of 2050mm.

“Most of our customers don’t want to

hold stock until they need it, and same day

or next day delivery is a typical scenario,”

says Andrew Wright, “so efficient handling,

storage and picking is vital. As well as the

excellent storage density in the new

premises we have doubled and in some

cases tripled throughput, eliminated double

handling and picking errors to offer

excellent customer service. This is down to

the efforts of all involved in this six month

project which was completed with no delays

and is just what we envisaged.”

melamine surfaces that reflect all the

current international trends seen at the

latest worldwide exhibitions.

Within the context of advances and

advantages of lightweight boards FINSA

will launch SuperPan STAR. The patented

FINSA SuperPan board is already a much

vaunted success offering manufactures a

number of significant advantages in final

product quality. SuperPan is an integrated

3-component board produced in a

continuous process where a core of

chipboard is surfaced top and bottom with

MDF-like fibers giving a smooth surface

that will accept various lacquered or foil

finishes to ensure a blemish-free quality

with detrimental effects like “orange peel”.

SuperPan STAR has been developed in

conjunction with German chemical giant

BASF so that the chipboard core is infused

with the new Kaurit LIGHT polymer

substance in a foamed process that results

in a high performance board that is up to

30% lighter than other SuperPan or

chipboards but machines in exactly the

same way and offers superior performance

in terms of bending or sagging

characteristics.

The advantages to manufacturers are

multifold and the Kaurit LIGHT polymer

component offers further environmental

considerations.

FINSA have entered SuperPan STAR in

the Design in Manufacturing Awards

(DIMA) competition and the company will

deliver a seminar on each day of the

exhibition in the special Presentation

Theatre area. On Sunday 7 SuperPan STAR

will be launched in the context of a

presentation on lightweight boards. On

Wednesday 10 BASF will present on the

Kaurit LIGHT technology in SuperPan

STAR including the environmental

benefits.

Ostermann’s new catalogue will be

coming out in September. Europe’s

largest range of edgings spread over

500 pages combined with plenty of

useful info about every facet of the

world of edgings. The catalogue boasts

numerous new features, as well as

edgings to match the latest

collections from Europe’s leading

panel manufacturers and a huge

selection of practical accessories.

As did its predecessors, the large

2013/2014 Edgings Catalogue dedicates

itself solely to the world of edgings and

their application. For the second time it will

be appearing in a 5-language edition. Apart

from English, the catalogue is also issued in

German, Dutch, French and Italian.

Readers who are already accustomed with

and value the Edgings Catalogue will

appreciate the familiar layout and the

various improvements.

More service, easier to useThe coherent way in which sections are

arranged according to the various edging

materials and the front pages specially laid

out for each section help the furniture

manufacturer navigate to the information

they need. The required section can be

quickly found with the user-friendly cut tab

format.

The front pages for each section provide

copious introductory information, an

illustrative practical application example

and detailed data on the particular material.

Each section features a two-page

explanation of the various services available

for the product, thus providing a coherent

overview of the relevant service package.

The applicable services can also be called

up with a smart phone or tablet by

scanning the QR code located in the page

headers. Each section is rounded off with

useful application data. The new key word

listing format on the relevant pages

provides an even clearer overview making it

easy to make comparisons.

Ostermann has added another new and

really helpful feature by listing the available

thicknesses alongside images of the various

edgings. Because Ostermann supplies all

plastic edgings in every required width, it is

not necessary to state the particular widths.

The catalogue makes placing orders simple

with the easy-to-read fold-out page

containing an overview of all available

materials and their various properties,

along with an explanation of Ostermann’s

order numbering system (providing key

information at first sight).

Numerous production innovations and additions

As an innovator in the furniture

manufacturing industry, Ostermann is

ahead of the field when it comes to the

latest styles. Our product managers have

their eyes and ears open in the marketplace,

staying ahead of the pack and they have no

hesitation in acting decisively to attractively

shape our product ranges. For example, the

catalogue contains edgings in 13 of the

most popular finishes, including super

matt. These are listed on page 89 and are

available in thicknesses of 1 mm. On page

107 the furniture manufacturer can find

futuristic LED edgings for creating

impressive lighting effects and Ostermann

can of course deliver wholly natural

products too –stylish solid wood edgings

such as the attractive "Wave" and "Saw"

finishes are available on page 147.

An addition to its ABS edgings,

Ostermann now supplies numerous extra

finishes across its entire melamine range.

True to the motto “When others call it a day

– Ostermann is just getting going”, the

melamine range will also continue to grow

considerably in future. Page 118 contains

numerous colours and patterns frequently

delivered by Ostermann to match ABS

finishes.

The adhesive section has been seen some

extensive product additions. The edging

itself is as multi-faceted as the

requirements for its application. It is

precisely for these individualised

applications that Ostermann is able to

supply the right glue. Apart from well-

established adhesive products, page 265

contains many special adhesives for a range

of applications within the workshop.

Find the edgings you want when you want

The printed version of Europe’s largest

Cross Reference List, an “edging for every

board”, is the ideal method for placing

orders, particularly in the workshop.

Reason enough for Ostermann to expand

this section. This is where the specialist will

not only find the right edging to match

patterns from 32 of the leading wood

materials manufacturers such as Egger,

Polyrey or Finsa, but as of now customers

are also given a corresponding page

reference to the edging photo in the

catalogue. This provides a direct, visual

image and radically speeds up the search

process. The variety of edging-finishes has

also been expanded. The numerous links in

this section, the listing of the finish

number in the Cross Reference List and the

use of the fold-out section in the front of

the catalogue all combine to make it easier

to find the right edgings and for those who

prefer the online version... the finish for the

required edging can be called up in

Ostermann’s Online Shop along with a

detailed image. Apart from edgings, the

customer will also find correction pens and

a further 38 manufacturers with edging

references assigned to them.

With the extensive catalogue containing

information on all things concerning panel

finishes, Ostermann, as the leading edging

and profile specialist, is providing the

furniture manufacturer with everything

required for edging applications. The

catalogue will be automatically sent to

Ostermann customers and potential

customers in the first week of September. It

will of course be delivered to anyone else

who requests it.

expanding and trading around the world,

which is something the entire region

should be proud of.”

Craig commented: “The Chancellor’s visit

to West Yorkshire reflects the strength and

depth of our manufacturing base and what

the Calder Valley has to offer. He was left in

no doubt about the excellence and innovation

that exits across businesses and their role in

helping drive and grow the economy. Local

businesses are committed to delivering high

quality products and services and they should

be applauded for their investment,

particularly in jobs which are needed to

support the local economy and enable it to

thrive”. There are 400 people are employed

across the three premises.
