GARHWAL TREK & RAFT: ITINERARY
DAY ONE: DED AIRPORT – JOSHIMATH (1560 M)
After an early breakfast we begin the eight-hour drive northwards following the Ganges to its source,
stopping for lunch along the way. The drive takes us into the rugged countryside of the Garhwal Himalaya
along the Alaknanda River. We travel past a number of holy confluences and then finally into the narrow
valley of the Mandakini River. We reach Joshimath, the road-head for the trek, in the evening. Overnight
camp.
DAY TWO: JOSHIMATH - DHAK - GULLING (3000 M)
Today, we drive for 45 mins to reach Dhak. From here we trek to Guling. Today's trek is a steep ascent. Right
from the start we have steep patches that get gradual after a couple of hours of the trek crossing Karchi
village. At Tugasi village we rest for 10 mins before we continue the climb. We ascend nearly 3,200 feet to
our campsite, Guling. We get to see Dronagiri, Hathi Parbat and Ghoda Parbat today.

DAY THREE: GULLING - LOWER KHULARA (3300 M)
After our first night out under the stars we continue on to Lower Khulara. The trail today gently traverses
through beautiful forest. We set up camp in the afternoon at the small meadow of Lower Khulara.
DAY FOUR: KHULARA - BASE CAMP (4000 M)
The trail is steep up to the Kuari Pass and it takes about two or three hours to get there. Once up on the pass,
the views are simply breathtaking, a wide panorama of high Himalayas – the Chaukhamba Range, Nilkantha
(6,597 m), and Abigamin (7,355 m) extend to the Tibetan border. In the middle foreground, the main
Himalayan chain in the vicinity of the Bhyundar and Hemkund Valleys includes Nilgiri Parbat (6,474 m) and
Rataban (6,166 m). Overnight camp.

evening.
DAY SIX: ADV BASE CAMP-SUMMIT-KHULARA BASE CAMP (3395 M)
Wake up early to be up on the summit to see the sunrise on a wide Himalayan panorama. The walk up to the

DAY SEVEN: KHULARA-TAPOVAN-PIPAL KOTI (1330 M)
The last day of the trip is a descent all the way down to Tapovan. It’s about a 3-hour drive from here to the
comforts of the hotel in Pipalkoti.
DAY EIGHT: PIPAL KOTI – CHAMOLI – NANDPRAYAG (CLASS 3+/4)
An early start today, we drive an hour to Chamoli and begin our river trip after a comprehensive safety check. We raft 25
kms with nearly 40 rapids today, including a possible portage at Hillary Fall. This is the spot where Edmund Hillary's
famous "Ocean to Sky" expedition ended, being unable to travel up this rapid. Lots of paddling, lots of scouts, this is the
quintessential river day. We float into Nandprayag for the night.
