Indias longest flyover
constructed in the shortest time

The 3.6 km long Panipat yover constructed by Larsen& Toubro Limited is Indias longest six lane yover onthe countrys NH network. It is the fastest constructed urban
infrastructure, completed within 28 months, well ahead of
schedule.
When opened to trafc in June 2008, the 10 km Panipat
elevated expressway will provide a comfortable, hindrance-
free, smooth sail-through at Panipat, where trafc snarls,
congestion bottlenecks and crowded market places have so
far been the order of the day. Not only that, the project will
now ensure smooth, hassle-free trafc ow throughout the
Chandigarh-Delhi National Highway.
Commencing the work in January 2006, L&T completed the project eight months ahead of schedule,
as against the contractual commitment of 36 months scheduled for completion by January 2009.
L&T Panipat Elevated Corridor Limited a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) was formed to design,
engineer, nance, construct, operate and maintain the yover. The total concession period including
the construction period is 20 years. ECC, L&Ts Construction Division, executed this six-lane
dedicated expressway on NH-1 in Haryana in a record time.

Panipat, the war city of India situated
at 90 km from National Capital, Delhi,
has a glorious history. It is said that
at the time of battle of Mahabharat
one of the ve villages which were
demanded by the pandavas wasPanpat which was later renamed
as Panipat. Three major battles were
fought at this place in 1526, 1556
and 1761. Famous for the handloom
products, Panipat is called the
City of Weaver.
National Highway No.1 connecting
Delhi-Panipat-Ambala-Amritsar and
going up to Indo-Pak border, is a
vital road network. NH-1 connects
Northern part of the country including
states of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab,
Himachal Pradesh and Haryana with
Delhi and rest of the country. In the
event of border skirmishes or a war,
this road will also serve as a vital
link to Wagha border area as three
Cantonments - Delhi, Ambala and
Jalandhar - are situated along thisroad. Trafc intensity on this road is
very high. The congested junctions
and thick concentration of industries
around Panipat create hurdles in
the movement of the heavy ow of
vehicles.
Thus, this gave rise to Indias longest
yover, which is part of Panipat
Elevated Expressway Project. The
project scope included widening the
existing four-lane to six lanes for a
10-km stretch from km 86 to km 96,
passing through the historic City of
Panipat. The elevated portion of this
expressway is 3.6 km long (3,048 m
of viaduct and 560 m of ramps)
covering the central built-up Panipat
section. The yover covers Gohana
Road, Sanuli Road, Assandh Road
Crossings, city bus stand and Skylark
Tourist Complex.
A separate two-lane peripheral
road with paved shoulders is also
provided on either side of the
access-controlled six-lane highway
for the local Panipat trafc, which
will not use the elevated structure.
The 20-lane toll plaza with semi-
automatic system and dedicated
automatic lane on either direction
ensures smooth toll collection.

Elevated Portion
This 6-lane 3.6 km - long yover
has been built using state-of-the-art
technology. The foundations of this
bridge consisting of 1282 piles were
installed using rotary drilling rig, over
which pile caps and piers have been
built. Two parallel elevated carriage
ways of 100 spans each (average
span length 31m) comprised 6
precast pretensioned I girders each
weighing 45 tonnes. Totally 1200 I
girders precast in a nearby casting
yard were transported to site through
specially modied trailers and erected
using gantries and heavy lift cranes.
For the rst time in India, precast deck
slab panels have been used as load
bearing members in combination with
cast in-situ deck slab. This innovative
method helped L&T to execute the
project most efciently ahead of
the construction schedule with costsavings.
To ensure smooth ride, modular type
expansion joints were imported and
provided at every 5 spans. RE Wall
Technology was extensively used in
this project for a length of 4040m.
At every pier location, the I-girders
were cross connected with diaphragm
which was rested on two pot PTFE
bearings.
Pavement
The project scope covers widening
of roads from 4 to 6 lanes. Flexible
road has been provided for the entire
stretch except at Toll Plaza, where
rigid pavement was constructed.
The minimum crust thickness of the
exible road is 695 mm.
Underpasses
In order to provide interconnectivity to
peripheral road on either side of the
access controlled main carriageway,
three underpasses have been built at
Ch: 87.365, Ch:91.900 and Ch:93.600.
These underpasses have a minimum
vertical clearance of 5.5m with 20m
effective span to accommodate a
4-lane divided carriageway covering
the median and 1.5m footpath on
either side.
Cross Drainage Works
A total of 10 culverts (7-Box, 2-Pipe
and 1-Slab) have been constructed
and widened on the stretch. The
cross drainage work also includes
construction of 2 minor bridges at
Ch: 91.400 and Ch: 96.000.
Street Lighting
For the rst time in this part of the
country, twisted decorative lighting
poles with bird wings are used.
Imported from Malaysia, these poles
are added attraction to the project.

during construction period indicated
that there was an increase in theaverage ow of trafc when compared
to the ow before commencement
of the project. A large number of
heterogeneous trafc ranging from
bullock carts, hand pulled rickshaws
to heavy industrial vehicles at all
hours made it compulsory to have a
well developed trafc management
plan. Trafc Management system
devised and implemented by L&T
in this project is one of the biggestachievements. This not only ensured
a safe and smooth movement of trafc,
but also won the hearts of the people.
General public, local administrators
and the trafc police complimented all
the efforts of L&T.
Project SignicanceThis yover relieves the people of
Panipat from the endless trafc jams,
the tedium of waiting for long hours,
and ushers them to an era of growth
and prosperity. Strategically located, this yover serves as a transportation
link and enhances all-round
development in industrial, residential
and commercial zones of the City.
Thanks largely to impeccable
planning and advanced construction
techniques, L&T has been able to
complete this unique and landmark
urban infrastructure project in a record
time of 28 months.
Toll Plaza
A 20-lane Toll Plaza has been
constructed at Ch: 94.775 with all
the modern facilities imported from
European countries. It has the
provision for local vehicles to use smart
cards and automatic classication of
vehicles. Adequate lighting and safety
systems are installed in the toll plaza
with Rigid Pavement (Pavement
Quality concrete) from Ch: 94.775 to
Ch: 95.118.
Landscaping
Landscape treatment has been
done through planting of trees at
appropriate locations. Shrubs of low
height are planted in the median of
the project section.
Trafc Management
Constructing the yover without
disturbing the trafc movement was
the critical task. A survey carried out
This bridge stands as more than an emblem of engineering and construction excellence. It is a
symbol of L&Ts commitment to create a high quality national infrastructure for a vibrant economy
of India. An enduring contribution to the lifelines of a nation, bridging distance and linking people.
