TroikaThe Cyprus economy came under the spotlightagain this month as the Troika (EuropeanCentral Bank, European Union andInternational Monetary Fund) reached the finalstages of helping the island with bailout funds. The general projected figure in circulation isthat a €17 billion rescue package will berequired. €9.5 billion will be required forrescuing the banks, €6 billion for maturingstate debt, and €1.5 billion for public finances. The local general consensus is that the banks arealso responsible for the current economic problems in Cyprus, through excessivelending to property development in Cyprus and secondly, to the banks’ recklessexposure to Greek bonds. There is also a focus on bank practices in promoting risky foreign currency loanswhich landed hundreds (if not thousands) of property owners bearing up underballooning debt, largely due to loans issued in Swiss Franks. The spotlight on the Cyprus economy is long overdue, according to generalsentiment. It is believed that the imposed checks and balances by the Troika, although unpalatable, will bring many positive changes to financial practices inCyprus.Whatever problems we might have here on the island, visitors still see Cyprus as anattractive, sunny, welcoming place for holidays and as a desirable place to live. The Troika has also focused on the fact that many properties in Cyprus do not haveTitle Deeds and that this, in their words, is a serious “impediment to concludingtransactions in the housing market”.At Fitzgerald’s the perennial Title Deeds problem does not exist! We have longrecognised that the lack of Title Deeds poses a risk for the buyer, and have chosento focus on selling properties with Title Deeds. The buyer, on full payment for theproperty, walks away with the Title Deeds in his hands. In November we achieved 8 sales and have doubled the number of enquiries forproperties. Our motto ‘Quality Properties, Realistic Prices and Title Deeds’, meansbuyers can choose with confidence from a quality selection of lovely properties atappropriate open market values.

Of course it all starts with clients wishing to sell. Attuned to market dynamics, the open market value has to be well judged. With the growing number of ownersentrusting us to sell their properties, the results speak for themselves. However, this is not to say that demand is buoyant. The demand for Cyprusproperty is there, but only the continual advertising and promotion of propertiesinternationally is what brings in good results. It is a hard won distinction for a Fitzgerald's but delivering superior customerservice for buyer and the seller is what makes it all worthwhile. We offer Legal referralBanking/loan assistanceInterior Design/furnitureProfessional TradesmenCatering ServiceRemovalistsWith our Real Estate Licence No 637 and the world economic situation gettingslowly better we look forward to expand our range of properties and look forwardto serving more customers."The Office"Being a family business we have one officecentrally situated in Paphos close to and in walkingdistance of both the Paphos Harbour and the Tombof the kings Road. From the harbour walk up towards the BegoniaGarden centre at the traffic lights and we are on theleft just before the “Wishing Tree”.Coming from the Tomb of the kings turn right at the traffic lights (or cut through bythe Roman Hotel) and we are a short way down on the right just after the “WishingTree”.Office hours are 9am to 5.30pm 6 days a week with no break for lunch. So if you are working and only have your lunch break to come and see us, you arewelcome!

Press Release from Trustees of ArchangelMichael Hospice

Last week the government granted the licence to establish thehospice.A number of exciting things have happened arising from this.

1. We have to put the name in Greek, translated into Greek it become ArchangelMichael Hospice, so it was better to use this name for both languages.2. The hospice will be an independently run charitable trust3. A new website has been established for the hospice

www.archangelmichaelhospice.comThe work on completing the hospice is well underway, there are painters, electricians, plumbers and other trades hard at work. The dream and vision started in the 1990’s is taking shape. It has taken a lot of patience and hard work to get this far. We are very grateful toall those who have donated funds to get us this far. However there is a great deal of work still to do on the operational side, in otherwords things like how the laundry is dealt with, the policies and procedures of thehospice, health and safety checks, fire prevention checks, much more.We are also very grateful to all those who haveand continue to work in the hospice shops andarranging other fundraising events. We need to continue all that hard work as wehave to raise some 700,000 euro’s per year. The building is paid for but we cannot eventhink of bringing a patient in till we have350,000 euros in the bank! So keep up thehard work.We would encourage people to arrange localevents in their favourite bar, restaurant ortavern. One the funding team will try to comealong on the evening and give a shortpresentation on the hospice. If having an event please contact:Fr. Jim 99793169For Greek speaking events Marcos 9964708

PachnaPachna (Pakhna, Πάχνα) is a village in the LimassolDistrict of the Republic of Cyprus.Perched on the southern slopes of the TroodosMountains, at an altitude of 750 metres above sealevel, Pachna enjoys an ideal climate for vinecultivation. The name Pachna is thought to originate from theancient Greek word “πάχνη” (pachni) which relates tothe morning white frost found on leaves following achilly night. Another explanation could come from thealternative meaning of “πάχνη”, a manger, in reference

to its protected location amidst the surrounding high hills.Chalky soil, and its elevation and climate, have made Pachna an ideal location forviticulture. The two local wineries have developed a reputation for quality whilstusing mostly local grape varieties. By 1985, Pachna was the largest grape producingvillage on the island with 830 hectares of land under cultivation, mainly local mavroand xynisteri grape varieties. There is also historical evidence that vines have been cultivated in Pachna sinceancient times as evidenced from pottery found in excavations at the nearby AyiaMarina settlement.Pachna is subdivided into Pano (upper) and Kato (Lower) Pachna. The distinctionfuels healthy local rivalry with Pano Pachna taking the upper hand on the‘superiority’ ladder, with the reputation as the more affluent side of the village.Pachna is one of those villages in Cyprus where the traditional fabric of the villageis intact. If you are visiting Pachna and vernacular Cypriot architecture is of interestto you, you’ll find a treasure trove of historically significant examples here.Fitzgerald’s have a phenomenally appealing country estate for sale in the village (theUpper Pachna!) which even comes with fortification walls and deed archedentryway with dedicated Guard Room. A delightful rustic charm of bygone era! Stepinside and you can be assured of having the best of both worlds.

See Pachna villa on http://www.fitzgeraldprestige.com/properties/11992/The organic growth pattern of the village is evident everywhere. Stone walls ofvaried heights line the narrow winding lanes which are interspaced with yet morenarrow lanes leading in all directions. Traditional domestic architecture presents aninconspicuous street presence with discreet gates opening to home courtyards. There

is a pronounced emphasis on the wealthof the house shown ‘within’, rather thatthe modern trend of prominent facadesand visibly imposing grandeur.Welcome to one of those traditionalstone houses in Pachna and enjoy anexperience, both inspirational andeducational. The owners inherited theone hundred and fifty years old propertyfrom their parents. The courtyard

features two imposing separate buildings sharing the generous courtyard, whichtraditionally, was regarded as the summer extension of the living and the kitchenareas. Wooden boxes filled with moist wood shavings is the village method ofpreserving lemons for the next six months or more. To the side, under arudimentary roof, is the remains of a home distillery. The ‘main’ house is a tall flat roofed structure with a towering 56m tall, exquisitelydetailed pointed archway, spanning the whole length of the room anddividing the room in half. The living areas are arranged functionally with the livingarea on one side (with front door) and the bedroom area on the other, with the‘marriage’ bed and the traditional canopy, in prominent position. To the side, the additional building proves to be even more fascinating andvaluable. Inconspicuous, the entry leads to a small scullery type room, then througha very low doorway we enter into a vast single room lined with giant pytharia onboth sides. These are giant earthenware jars used for storing a whole range ofhome made/home grown products (oil, wine, preserves, grain, etc). A variety ofbags hanging from the low ceilings signified even more consumable ‘treasures’ensuring a plentiful and flavoursome supply of food throughout the year.Village life has alwaysincluded a warm welcome toany stranger. Even in thepoorest households, a travelercan find food and hospitalityfor the night. The wordsKalosorisate (Welcome!) andKopiaste (Come join us!) arethe bywords of genuine andsincere Cypriot hospitality.Welcome to Pachna! You’llenjoy the experience.

Chiaki KamikawaThe Japanese artist Chiaki Kamikawa will presenther latest drawings and a new collection ofsculptures in the exhibition entitled Collector’sRoom at Chiaki Kamikawa Contemporary Art inPaphos. The exhibition will be open on 1stDecember and will run until 22 December.Chiaki Kamikawa investigates the realm of realityand fantasy. For the past few years she has beenworking on the theme of religious art withdrawings and sculpture. Kamikawa feels lessburdened by a certain religion as she was born andraised in Japan where the religion is merged intothe customs and is not predominantly

authoritative.Chiaki is from Japan and, as a talented artist, she brings a unique set of skills to thePaphos art scene. Chiaki’s fascinating drawings and sculptures are representativethe creative imagery inspired by everyday experiences and scenes. ‘My workexplores the realm of reality and fantasy’, she says. The existence of the large numbers of cult groups in Japan also influenced her toexplore possibilities of new religion as a theme. Her main interests are the roles ofreligious art and the religion in our life, and the relationship between religious ideasand imagery or objects. She does not follow a certain religion in her art works, instead she creates her own ideas, new symbols and meanings and ultimately, a newreligious art.
