Tour Summary
We spent the first day of the main tour at the Pacific Adventist University in Port Moresby, the capital
city of Papua New Guinea. The university, otherwise known as PAU, has grounds where one can spend
several hours birding with a good variety of species. Especially because a few small dams attract a good
number of waterfowl. Highlights of the day
included Plumed and Wondering Whistling
Ducks, Grey Teal, Dusky Moorhen, the colourful
Comb-crested Jacana, Pied Heron and a Royal
Spoonbill – not very common in Papua New
Guinea. We were also very fortunate to see a
Brown Goshawk, as well as Rufous-banded
Honeyeater, Rainbow Bee-eaters, Black-backed
Butcherbird, Coconut Lorikeets, White-breasted
Cuckooshrike a Fawn-breasted Bowerbird and its
bower – with some green leaves as decoration,
New Guinea Friarbird, Sacred Kingfisher, the
stunning Raja Shelduck and three Papuan
Frogmouths. We then did a last bout of birding,
getting looks at Yellow-tinted Honeyeater, Black-
faced Cuckooshrike and an Australian Hobby.
What a great start to the tour!
Today was our first full day of the tour, and after a lovely breakfast buffet we made our way to Varirata
National Park. The first birds of the day were a pair of Blue-winged Kookaburras sitting in a Eucalyptus
tree next to the side of the road. We enter the National Park and headed straight to the Raggiana Bird-of-
paradise lek. We waited for about half an hour
before we started to see a few male birds sitting
in the trees, and after some stealthy positioning
we got some excellent views – making this one
of the highlights for the day and probably the
trip. We then walked along the lookout trail and
had a lovely look at a Barred Owlet-Nightjar
sitting in a hole in a tree. We continued along
the trail, spotting Olive Flyrobin, Pale-billed
Scrubwren, Wompoo Fruit Dove, a female Red-
cheeked Parrot, Rusty Pitohui, Crinkle-collared
Manucode, Black Berrypecker and a stunning
Azure Kingfisher.
We then moved out along another trail, and
after only a few metres of walking we had an
extraordinary sighting of an immature Papuan
Pitta. What followed was a massive amount of activity from Spot-winged, Frilled and Black-faced
Monarchs, female Growling Riflebirds and one male displaying, Hooded Pitohui, White-faced Robin,

Varied Triller, brief views of a Painted Quail-Thrush in flight, Fairy, Green-backed and Yellow-breasted
Gerygones and a Yellow-breasted Boatbill. We then had lunch and tried a few trials that ended up being
very quiet, so we visited some Eucalyptus forest, managing to see White-bellied Whistler, White-throated
Honeyeater, Lemon-bellied Flyrobin, Orange-bellied Fruit Dove, long-distance views of a Sulphur-
crested Cockatoo, Pacific Baza and a fantastic look at a Barking
Owl, which posed for us in a Eucalyptus tree.
We flew from Port Moresby to Mount Hagen and then
transferred to Kumul Lodge, situated in the Enga Province of
Papua New Guinea. Along the way, we saw Australian Hobby,
Black Kites and a Papuan Harrier. As expected, as soon as we
arrived we were welcomed by a good number of birds at the
feeding area in front of the lodge. We saw Crested Berrypecker,
Common Smoky Honeyeater, Belford’s Melidectes, White-
winged Robin, Grey-streaked Honeyeater, a female Regent
Whistler, the bossy Ribbon-tailed Astrapia, a female Brown
Sicklebill, Island Thrush and the beautiful Brehm’s Tiger
Parrot. We then had lunch, after which we took a walk in the
forest surrounding the lodge. We managed to see an immature
Rufous-naped Whistler, Mountain Mouse Warbler, a female
Crested Satinbird, Friendly Fantail, Plum-faced Lorikeets and
had fantastic close looks at a Mountain Firetail. We tried our
luck to see a New Guinea Woodcock, only managing to hear
the bird, but a couple of people at least managed to see a Large
Scrubwren.
After a cold and early start to the day, we made our way to Kama Village in the dark. It was here that we
would try our luck to see Lesser Bird-of-paradise. As we made our way to the clearing, we could already
hear the male bird calling. Once we got to the clearing, we did not wait too long before a male Lesser
Bird-of-paradise showed himself. For the next hour, we managed to get some excellent views, photos
and videos. We also saw two females and one young male. Other birds that we saw were Mountain
Myzomela, Long-tailed Shrike and Brush
Cuckoo. We then visited the lowland area
near the Lai River, and saw Yellow-
breasted Bowerbird, Papuan Grassbird,
White-shouldered Fairywren, Brown
Goshawk, Mountain Swiftlets, Hooded
Mannikins and Ornate Melidectes. Once
we were at the river, we managed to pick
up a couple of species there too, namely
Mountain Meliphaga (Honeyeater), Black-
headed Whistler and at least four Torrent
Flyrobins. We then headed back to the
lodge, where we squeezed in some more

birding on the trail near the lodge, managing a pair of the poisonous Blue-capped Ifrit, as well as Rufous-
naped Bellbird, Canary Flyrobin and Fan-tailed Berrypecker.
After lunch, we had a short break before driving up to the
Murmura Pass. There was a lovely cleared area made for
us by the owner of the property, and from here we were
able to view a good number of species from the vantage
point overlooking the small clearing. We saw Black-
throated and Rufous-backed Honeyeaters, Plum-faced and
Orange-billed Lorikeets, Ashy Robin, Princess
Stephanie’s Astrapia, a male Brown Sicklebill flying
overhead, Tit Berrypecker, Fan-tailed Cuckoo, brief views
of a female Loria’s Satinbird and Dimorphic Fantail. We
then drove back to the lodge, stopping briefly for a Brown
Falcon sitting on a dead tree stump on the side of the road.
We visited the village area of Tonga next. Here, we only
managed to see Superb Bird-of-paradise, as well as a
couple of birds along the roadside, such as Mountain
Honeyeater, Ornate Melidectes, Yellow-billed Lorikeets,
Papuan Grassbird, Red-collared and Mountain Myzomelas
and better views of Yellow-breasted Bowerbird. We spent
the rest of the day at the lodge, where we had sightings of
male and female Crested Satinbirds, Wattled Ploughbill,
Buff-faced Scrubwren, Lesser Melampitta, Plum-faced Lorikeets and Crested Berrypecker. Just before
dinner, on our final attempt, we finally managed to see New Guinea Woodcock. We also heard a
Mountain Owlet-Nightjar calling a couple of times, with little success in seeing the bird.
We were to leave Kumul Lodge the next morning,
but not without one more try at finding some species
we still needed. Two new birds that we found were
Black-breasted Boatbill and Garnet Robin – the
latter is generally a very tough bird to find. We then
took a transfer down to Mt Hagan, where we
boarded a bus to take us to our next destination,
Rondon Ridge. As we climbed the mountain out of
the Wahgi Valley and towards the lodge, we had a
look at one Great Woodswallow. After lunch and a
short break, we met Joseph, our local guide for the
next few days, and proceeded to walk along a few
trails behind the lodge. After some hard work, we
finally managed to see a Black Pitohui. Other birds
we saw were Black Fantail, Papua Sitellas, Island
Leaf Warblers and we managed a few quick looks

at a some Yellow-browed Melidectes. After dinner we did some owling, only managing to hear Papuan
Boobook, but we did get a good look at Mars and Jupiter, as well as the Southern Cross and Scorpius
constellations.
Our plan for the day was to bird around the
Rondon Ridge area. Our first visit was to a
potential Blue Bird-of-paradise spot. After a
short hike and a hairy river crossing, we arrived
at the area where we scouted a couple of fruiting
trees hoping to see a Blue Bird-of-paradise. We
heard the bird call a few times, and even
managed to get some excellent looks at a male
and female Superb Bird-of-paradise while
waiting for the arrival of the Blue Bird-of-
paradise. The mist came in, followed by some
rain and this prolonged things, but we could hear
the bird calling in the distance, which kept our
hopes up. As soon as the weather cleared up, we
had a male Blue Bird-of-paradise fly overhead.
We then changed our position to a higher level, and after hearing the call a few times, a couple of us
managed to see the bird through the spotting scope. After lunch, we walked up the main track leading to
a clearing a couple of hundred metres behind the lodge, in the hopes of seeing the King of Saxony Bird-
of-paradise and a couple of other specials. After a long
walk uphill, we finally made it to the clearing and then
after a few minutes of quiet, we heard the call of the
King of Saxony Bird-of-paradise nearby. Before we
knew it the King of Saxony landed at eye-level and we
had crippling views of this amazing bird. Views of
Black and Brown Sicklebills followed shortly
thereafter, as well as views of a female Wattled
Ploughbill, the stunning male Princess Stephanie’s
Astrapia and a male Regent Whistler. We then walked
back down the path, getting great looks at a large flock
of Papuan Sitellas and a much-desired look at a male
Wattled Ploughbill, ending off a successful day of
birding in the Rondon Ridge area.
Today was our Papua New Guinea culture day. After
some early morning birding, we headed to two local
villages outside the town of Mount Hagen. The first
village we visited was that of the Mudmen, and here we
learnt through a small play how they manage to scare the larger tribes away from their land by dressing
up with white body paint and wearing specially-made scary mud masks. We then visited the Huli
Wigmen village and watched three men put on their intricate face paint. At the same time, we could

admire their beautiful wigs made up of the birds found in the area, such as Superb, Raggiana and King
of Saxony Birds-of-paradise. We then headed back to the lodge, and in the afternoon we took a short
walk around the property, where we had great looks at a Long-tailed Honey Buzzard with a small rodent
in its talons. In the evening we went on a night walk, only managing to hear a Feline Owlet-Nightjar.
We bid farewell to the Eastern
Highlands and flew back to Port
Moresby in the late morning. After
arriving in Port Moresby, we checked
into our hotel and then met Leonard,
who would take us by bus to the Brown
River District. It was a nice change to
be in the lowland area once again, and
after some productive open road
birding we left seeing a couple of new
species, such as Pink-spotted and
Orange-bellied Fruit Doves, Forest
Kingfisher, Eclectus and Red-cheeked
Parrots, Glossy-mantled Manucode,
Pinion’s, Torresian and Zoe's Imperial Pigeons, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, and Oriental Dollarbird. We
also had far better looks at a Blue-winged Kookaburra. We then made our way back to Port Moresby to
get ready for our visit to Kiunga and Tabubil.
We flew from Port Moresby to the small town of
Kiunga, situated along the Fly River, where we
met Samuel, who would be guiding us for some
of the time we were in Kiunga and Tabubil. After
a delightful lunch at the Kiunga Guest House, we
travelled to Tabubil. As we neared the town we
visited the Ok Menga Hydro Facility, where we
saw a Torrent-lark, Great Cormorant, Torrent
Flyrobin and a Common Sandpiper. We then
headed to the mining town of Tabubil, spotting
two Moustached Treeswift along the way back.
We then checked into our lodge and had a
relaxing dinner with lots of laughs.
We woke up to a typical rainy day in the gold and
copper mining town of Tabubil. Nevertheless, we
continued with our day’s plan and visited Dablin
Creek. It was a slow start, but once the rain
subsided we started to see a few birds, such as
Rusty Mouse Warbler, Grey-headed Cuckooshrike, Mountain Peltops, Long-billed Honeyeater, Capped
and Black-fronted White-eyes, Varied Triller, Pacific Koel, Black Butcherbird, White-eared Bronze

Cuckoo, far better views of Dusky Lorikeets, two Torrent-larks, a flyover Mottled Berryhunter and brief
views of a pair of Magnificent Birds-of-paradise. We headed back to the lodge and had lunch and a break
before heading back to the Ok Menga Hydro Electric Plant. We had hoped to see Salvadori’s Teal, but
had no luck.
After a delicious breakfast the next
morning, we drove back up to the Ok Menga
Hydro Plant and visited a new area that had
recently been opened for birders to visit.
Even though it was raining, we still
managed to obtain decent looks at a couple
of male Greater Birds-of-paradise and
sightings of Orange-fronted Hanging
Parrots, Stout-billed Cuckooshrikes and a
pair of Wallace’s Fairywrens. We then
visited a clearing where we saw a female
Black Sunbird, great views of Pesquet’s
Parrots and Crinkle-collared Manucode.
Further down the road we saw Golden
Mynas, Magnificent Bird-of-paradise and
Golden Cuckooshrikes. We then made one last attempt for the Salvadori’s Teal but had no luck, so we
drove back to the hotel where we had lunch. After lunch we drove to Kiunga for the next few days of
exciting birding!
After a night with lots of rain, we woke up to a rain-
free morning. After a filling breakfast we made our
way down to Boys Town Road to spend a couple of
hours in a well-known birding spot. Zoe’s Imperial
Pigeon was one of the first birds we saw, followed
by sightings of a female Superb Fruit Dove,
Yellow-flanked Lorikeets, Yellowish-streaked
Lory, Double-eyed Fig Parrot, male and female
Beautiful Fruit Doves, Yellow-gaped Honeyeater
(Meliphaga), Rufous-bellied Kookaburra, Yellow-
billed Kingfisher, Boyer’s Cuckooshrike, Meyer’s
Friarbird and a lengthy look at a male Flame
Bowerbird flying overhead – which was spotted by
Paul, our bus driver. After lunch, we drove to the
famous Kilometre 17 in the hopes of finding King
and Greater Birds-of-paradise. As we walked
through the muddy trails, we came across a group
of Papuan Babblers and had a quick view of a
Purple-tailed Imperial Pigeon flying overhead.

paradise, we immediately we saw a bird that quickly disappeared for a while before returning – providing
us with excellent scope views and great photographic opportunities. At the same time the Greater Birds-
of-paradise were calling, so we walked through the
mud once again and arrived at their display site. We
waited patiently, getting bombarded by mosquitoes
before we finally had three male Greater Birds-of-
paradise in full display in an open tree. This was by
far one of the highlights of the tour, and we were
very lucky to see this display as it only happened
once!
The next two eagerly awaited days were spent along
the Fly, Elevala and Kato Rivers, staying over for
one night at Kwatu Lodge. A few days before we set
off we got news that the river level was extremely
low, but luckily for us a few days of rain meant that
the river level had risen by four metres. This was
good news for us, as getting on and off boats was far
easier and quicker, meaning we spent more time
spotting birds than fighting with the mud.
We left the Kiunga Waterfront at sunrise and cruised down the Fly River – at a length of approximately
1050km, it is the second longest river in Papua New Guinea, the longest being the Sepik. Some of the
first birds we saw were the Collared Imperial Pigeon and Papuan Spine-tailed Swift, followed by views
of a White-bellied Sea Eagle. We then took a shortcut through a small channel that linked us to the
Elevala River. As we made our way along the river in the direction of the lodge, we saw Palm Cockatoo,
Large Fig Parrot, Lowland Peltops and a quick view of a male Twelve-wired Bird-of-paradise flying
across the river. We stopped at an area where we had a brief flyover view of a Common Paradise
Kingfisher. We then tried another area,
and this time whilst on land we saw
Common and Little Paradise Kingfishers
extremely well – some people even
managed to get photographs of both birds.
We finally arrived at Kwatu Lodge and
settled in. While we had lunch, a Great-
billed Heron flew straight to the lodge,
landing on a tree behind it. We also had
fantastic close views of Orange-breasted
Fig Parrots feeding from a tree right in
front of the balcony.
We then went back out for the afternoon
boat trip, where we got to see a Hook-
billed Kingfisher and had a mixed flock

consisting of Frilled and Hooded Monarchs, as well as Southern Variable Pitohui. We also had Hooded
and Golden Cuckooshrikes flying overhead a couple of times. The highlight of the afternoon was seeing
a Sclater’s Crowned Pigeon on a nest, followed by a family of two adult Sclater’s Crowned Pigeons and
a young bird about a quarter of the size, already
resembling the adults. Unfortunately, the rain arrived
as we had dinner, and continued throughout the night
until breakfast time, so we did not have an opportunity
to see any night birds.
We started off the day with excellent scope views of a
male and female Twelve-wired Birds-of-paradise
sitting at the tops of some trees near the lodge. Sadly,
our boat ride got rained out, so we headed back to the
lodge and waited for the rain to dissipate. Once the sun
came out, we walked on a trail near the lodge and heard
a Blue Jewel Babbler calling in the forest nearby after
a couple of minutes. We tried our best to locate the bird,
and as per normal we had at least three sightings of the
bird flying across the trail. Satisfied, we walked back
to the lodge, had lunch, packed up and bid farewell to
the friendly Kwatu Lodge staff, making our way back
to Kiunga. We had one final stop to make, and this was at a Flame Bowerbird bower, where a hide was
constructed out of sego leaves. As soon as we arrived at the site the bird appeared with a dried leaf in its
bill, and we all got some fantastic views of this spectacular bird, making it a fantastic way to end the two
days on the river. Full of high spirits, we made our way back to Kiunga and had a jovial evening.
Having a mid-day flight meant that we were limited
to a couple of hours of birding in Kiunga before our
flight back to Port Moresby. We made good use of
this morning and tried an area where we could get
the newest species. This turned out to be on the
airstrip, so we walked all the way down to the
bottom, where we came across a flooded area that
yielded sightings of Crimson Finches, Black
Mannikin, Brown Quail and a Nankeen Kestrel.
We then flew back to Port Moresby and spent some
time in the nearby mall getting souvenirs for
friends and family.
Today was our final full day of birding, and we had
unfinished business at Varirata National Park to
sort out. After breakfast we met with Leonard, our
local guide, and made our way to the National Park.

Brown-headed Paradise Kingfisher – we got some looks through the scope, and some were able to
photograph this pretty bird. We then birded around the car park, where we saw Dwarf Koel, Red-cheeked
Parrots and Raggiana Bird-of-paradise. A
little further down, we were very lucky to see
two Papuan Scrub Robins. We then walked a
new trail, which started off quite steep but
flattened out towards the top. We were very
fortunate here, as we saw two Drongo
Fantails, Little-bronze Cuckoo, Barred
Cuckooshrike, Purple-tailed Imperial Pigeon
and a Goldenface. After lunch we tried our
luck with the Chestnut-backed Jewel-babbler,
and after some searching we all finally
managed to get decent looks at this shy bird.
Overall, it was a great day and a great way to
end the tour.
