We Love and Care for Our Kids

After a glorious winter we are now moving into a very busy time of the year. As I writethis we have just finished the first “The Who” concert. This was a fabulous eveningand we received great recognition from the nine to ten thousand people in

attendance, as well as raising in excess of $7,000 for the hospital while having fun. I offer mysincere thanks to the 50 Nobles and Ladies who braved the worst storm of the winter to be inattendance. After our duties were over we were able to enjoy a great concert. They are afabulous band and I encourage you to volunteer for the next The Who concert and also theBryan Adams concert. Please get your name into the Recorder’s office, as we are limited to 50volunteers. Remember our motto “Fun with a Purpose”.

As most of you are aware membership is our greatest challenge but our on-goingattendance at public events such as the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the concerts, the Spartanraces and the many other local events are certainly helping to raise our local profile and forthis I gratefully acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the Clubs and Units belonging toRameses. In particular the great turn out of Shriners and Shrine Units from throughout the GTAarea participating in the St. Patrick’s Day parade was very impressive. A tip of the Fez to all!Thank you.

We have several major upcoming events that we look forward to joining the fellowship andfun. The Potentate’s Ball is at a new location, The Crowne Plaza and promises to be a funevening for all.

The Spring Ceremonial is returning to Niagara Falls and I know our Director General, NobleDave Gillies, and his team of Nobles, Ladies, and members of Bokhara Court have worked veryhard to ensure a great time will be had by all. They have a fabulous program put together forboth the Nobles and Ladies which promises, along with Niagara’s attractions, to be a greatweekend of something for everyone.

The Treblaires is a community showchoir composed of women fromaround the Niagara Region. They

are directed by Jessica Cowan andaccompanied by pianist, Ben Phelan.

Since 1956, the Treblaires Ladies ShowChoir has entertained in the NiagaraPeninsula and has evolved from a ladies’“stand up and sing” choir, to doing

“The 50’s Show”, featuring Roy Orbison, TheEverly Brothers, Elvis and many others; “Steppin’Out”, a blues/jazz revue; and “Stairway to theStars’, which was a “heavenly” experience.

In 2005, the Treblaires became a not-for-profitcorporation, and in August 2009, received aTrillium Grant, which is being used to enhancetheir ability to serve within their community. TheTreblaires’ mandate is to entertain a broaddemographic of audiences at a variety of differentvenues around the Niagara Region.

WOODY’S WISDOMAre we failing as SHRINERS? At one time the Shrine used to have over 900,000 members, today we are under 300,000. Rameses was

at one time 6,500 members, we are now at 3,000. My own Clubwas at 144 and now we are at 78.

This week I received an e-mail from a Noble in Detroit whois running for the Imperial line. His Temple used to have 18,000members and now has 4,000. This is the constant theme formost Clubs and Temples. Rameses now have more membersover 90 than under-40 years old.

Sure we can blame society, the internet, and of course theyouth who believe that they are entitled to everything, butreally shouldn’t we share some of the blame?

I have visited many Clubs and I have mentioned the “SamsarJewel”. Do you know that I am lucky if 2 or 3 Nobles knowwhat it is? It is a jewel for membership. To complete the jewel, aNoble has to sponsor 12 new members. The jewel has 4 phases.Each time you get 3 new members, you move up a phase. Howmany Nobles in your Club have the “Samsar Jewel?”

Every time I go to a Club, I ask all the Nobles to stand thathave sponsored at least one member. About 30% stand up.What are the other 70% doing? Perhaps it is time to replaceyourself by sponsoring a new member. Remember the more

members you get the lighter the work. Nobles, if we don’t soon start to change this trend, then ask

yourself, “Where will the Shrine be in 25 years?” I am very proud to be a Shriner. When I hear that a family

has been told to get a wheelchair for their child, because theywill never walk, I feel their pain and they must think thatsomeone is always raining on their parade. But things canchange when they are introduced to our Shrine Hospitals. Ourdedicated doctors and nurses work very hard to help ourchildren see the “rainbow” through the rain. When they walkagain, the “sun” comes out and “hope” brightens their lives,that’s right, a “rainbow of hope.”

Nobles, as Shriners, we take on a great responsibility ofkeeping our Hospitals open. It isn’t easy to do when ournumbers keep falling. If we don’t try to build membership, thenwho will make the “rainbows”?

Happy Spring Nobles. According to the calendar, it hasbeen spring for two days and the weather office is calling for snow tomorrow.

Trivia question: Who was Noble George McConkey? Thank you to all the Nobles and family for offering their

congratulations on my new position, and patience as I ride asteep but enjoyable learning curve.

I had the privilege of attending the Recorder’s Seminar at theend of February. Met many old friends from my Membershipdays and 3 of my Canadian colleagues. It was two full days ofmeetings with a great deal of pertinent information absorbed byyour Recorder.

The new software package “Webfez” which was introducedlast year at this time is, and will be, even more valuable as atool for our office staff, Divan and Club Secretaries. The PublicRelations/Donation offices let us know that starting in April the“Love to the Rescue” program which you have seen on USchannels will be airing on Canadian stations, and other media.

Now that we are settled in the building some upgrade, minorrepairs, procedures, and additional help is needed. The internetservice has been very slow and the Wi-Fi inconsistent. Thoseissues should be resolved in the next week or so. When you arein the building ask, and I can give you the Wi-Fi informationneeded. Also the high costs of the phone system is beinginvestigated to see how it can be lowered.

One of our staff members recently sent a letter to Club and

Unit Secretaries announcing that she will be leaving the officeteam at year’s end due to cutbacks. Also another staff memberhas plans on retiring in 2016. We will keep you updated onwhat this means for the re-organization within the office team.

Headquarters is looking for a bar tender/handyman to workon an as-needed basis. You can contact me by calling the officeor emailing the Recorder.

I am also looking to identify Nobles to form a focus grouparound the effective use of social media (Facebook, twitter,periscope etc.), web sites and online communications. Again ifyou have an interest please send me an email [email protected].

Membership still remains our top priority. In previous articlesI have suggested ways to approach Lodge members. With theaddition of the new “Love to the Rescue” campaign in our areayou need to be prepared to speak on the Shrine and our work.In many cases the men and women may not be Shriners,Daughters of the Nile, or LOSNA.When you meet such a man, youor a brother Mason shouldbecome their mentor, find asuitable Lodge, follow themthrough the Three Degreesand then when ready,sponsor them into theShrine.

Imust first thank all those who have sent congratulatorymessages to Lady Barbara and me. We are certainly pleased to receive them but we are also humbled by them at the

same time. Also I must include a big thank you to Imperial Sir George

Mitchell and Lady Deanna for many years of dedicated serviceto the Shrine in general and Rameses Shriners in particular. Imissed that in my haste last issue. Deadlines have a way ofdoing that to a person.

All Clubs should have the latest information about thenewest incarnation of the annual Vidalia Onions campaign intheir hands by now. The adverse exchange rate has necessitateda price increase but note that a rising tide floats all boats. We

should still be as competitive relative to anyone else in thegame. The message however is the same; sell, sell, sell. Then sellsome more. Your continued support is appreciated.

I have just returned from Oriental Guide School in Tampa.The four-day seminar and group hug provides the new OG’swith a wealth of information and a little time to meet the OG’sfrom all of Shrinedom. We also get to meet the ImperialPotentate and all others on the Imperial line. In particular wemet Imperial Sir Jeffery Sowder who will be the ImperialPotentate in 2020. All the present OG’s will be Potentate of theirrespective Temples in 2020, God and the Nobility willing ofcourse. The Imperial Session will be held in Kansas City in 2020.

Next up is Social Media. In general, the Shrine has notadapted to the use of these powerful tools. We must addressthat situation. Adapt we must. If you have a skill set thatincludes Social Media and have some time to give to us, pleasedrop me a quick note via email. I will coordinate our efforts to“march off the map” into the Social Media universe.

TREASURER’S REPORTFirst order of business is that I would like to thank all theNobles who came out to the Rameses Financial Meetingand in particular Noble Brad Swan for asking some really

good questions. Nobles, please feel free to contact me anytimeabout the finances of Rameses Shriners. I will do my best to getyou the answers as soon as possible.

Overall, Rameses is in good shape financially and steps arebeing taken to reduce expenses wherever possible. The Divan isalso actively looking at new fundraising opportunities. If anyNoble has an idea for a new fundraiser do not hesitate tocontact us, so that you can be invited to a Divan meeting todiscuss. In the meantime let’s all get behind our AssistantRabban Tom Woodrow and make the 2016 Rameses ShrineCircus a huge success.

I would also like to take this opportunity to warn you ofsomething called Ransomware. There was an alert issued to SHCErie of an increase in Ransomware attacks in the past few

weeks. Ransomware is a malicious software (also known asmalware) that encrypts your files without you knowing it andrequires payment to unencrypt them. According to my computerguy, they look for between $500 and $700 US dollars. He had 3cases in the last week, none got their files back and only onehad a backup. In addition to backing up your files, care shouldbe taken to only open emails and attachments from trustedsources.

Turning to a much happier note, SHC Erie has a new videoout entitled “What is Shriners Hospital for Children Erie?” Youcan view this on YouTube. Together let’s make 2016 a fantasticyear.

The Robbie Burns Night at the Temple was verysuccessful. We had a great meal, haggis, deliciousdesserts and a great performance by the Black Watch

Pipes and Drums. We were honoured to have Stuart Gray from Scotland to do

the Toast to the Haggis and the Immortal Memories of RobbieBurns. Stuart is a former Pipe Major of the Rameses Pipe Band.

Hopefully everyone had a great Easter and we are nowlooking forward to spring.

I would like to invite all Nobles and their families to ourannual Drum Head Service at the Spring Ceremonial in NiagaraFalls, Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 8am.

It will be held at 479 Legion Spring Street and followed by abreakfast at the Niagara Shrine Club. If you have never attendeda Drum Head Service please come and see the Drum Corpspresent their drums and the Legion of Honour present our flags.

A thought to share . . . Sometimes we are so deeply wounded that it leaves a

lasting scar. Did you know it is possible to forgive, even whenthe scars are visible? You might not forget, but forgiveness is achoice you can make. A tough choice, sure . . but the right one.You may just find it can help to heal some of those scars.

Rameses Special Ladies Luncheon

Someone said the winter is coming to an end so before it doesn’t, let me tell youwhat we did at Sheba to keep ourselves warm. The first thing we did was to lure 26 teams of Nobles to the Curling Rink in

Barrie to entertain us by throwing a bunch of rocks while sweeping some ice andyelling inspiring words sprinkled with sarcasm.

The 51st Whitefish Bonspiel attracted some well-seasoned veterans and a numberof unseasoned freshmen (I am being polite). Everyone came to curl but the arena wasnot the only place of amusement. The Friday hospitality room was the beginning of theweekend festivities which started at 2:00pm and lasted into the evening. Therecertainly was a lot of Social Intercourse or Fellowship as some of you called it.

The Opening Ceremony was led by Mr. Whitefish (Noble Peter Hughson) followedby Sheba’s Colour Party hoisting their flags high while keeping in time to the pipe anddrum. A number of curlers “fell” in behind bringing up the rear (sorry “followed” not“fell”). The Whitefish Breakfast started before sunrise on Saturday and featured fish,beans and fresh orange “juiced” (this is not a spelling error…I did mean “juiced”).After being fed and well juiced, those who could walk did so, while others wereescorted back to the ice for a day of curling and cursing. Then it was time for lunch.

Our Sheba Nobles opened their homes to give our guests some nourishment. Notonly did our visitors devour their lunch but many liquor cabinets were left empty aswell. From there it was back to the sheets for a final time.

The Evening Banquet with the award presentation capped off the whole “affair”.Noble Terry Arnold as M.C. made a lot of us laugh and some of us cry. The VikingShrine Club was the big winner. D. J. Slessor, Chris Toole, Tom Pearson and WillyWalters won the Wm J. “Bill” Hay Trophy and took it home for a second year a row.

The Minnow Trophy was won by the Muskoka Shrine Club, Ken Lovelock, KyleRichardson and Clarence Boyd. Congratulations to all!

Noble David Lougheed was the lucky winner of the Ring Draw. He says he can’twait to surprise his wife (I hope he is giving her the ring). So ends another“Whitefish”.

Shriners reporting for the Fire Watchplease report in one hour prior toshow times. This allows you time tosign in and report to your station. FireWatch must be in place 45 minutesprior to show time; that’s 15 minutes

before the public is allowed to enter the tent.

For Rameses Shriners, the circus ismore than a fraternal fundraiser; it isalso an opportunity to give back tothe community by making it possible

for everyone to have a circus experience.

The year “Joy’s Beacons of Light” is almost be over. I feel that this year has been very successful andharmonious.

So many positive things have happened and the Ladies of theCourt have risen to the challenge. As requested by Lady JanHebert, the Ladies have put into place a recognition program forall members.

The new hospital opened in Montreal and the EOS machinehas a very nice new room with much more room thanpreviously. There is a space for the Gait Lab which is alreadydesignated and awaiting the final purchase and installation.

We had a marvellous visit with Lady Joy Moore the currentGrand High Priestess and our books were fine, with lots ofpositive comments. Our thank you goes out to all theSecretaries and Treasurers for all their hard work through theyear to make these comments possible.

As we celebrated our 90th birthday with the ceremonial andthe 8 new members, we realize that our Court can, and does,promote new members. We are pleased to welcome a total of11 new members and hope that they will enjoy working with usto provide care for our special children.

The annual Spring Tea is over. Mme Céline Doray spoke forthe last time as she has retired. We wish her all the best. Wethank everyone for supporting our tea.

I wish to thank each and every member for the support overthe last year. It is this support that makes Bokhara Courtsuccessful in all our endeavours.

Oronto Temple No. 69 Daughters of theNile have been back home with theRameses Shriners at 124 Queen’s

Plate Drive for a whole year now and the timehas flown by.

We started with the installation of a NewQueen and her Officers and now it is time topass the gavel on to our New Queen and herOfficers.

The Installation of Queen Christina (Tina) Connell andher 2016-2017 Officers was held on March 20, 2016, a very

beautiful sunny day, which we are sure is a sign of the brightdays ahead for Oronto Temple No. 69. Thank you to all

our family and friends who attended our beautifulevent.

We have a busy, but fun-filled summer planned.We will be attending our 100th Supreme Sessionwhich is in Indianapolis, Indiana, in June.

We have our Supreme Queen’s visit on July 15,2016, which is always exciting and we will also be

visiting our sister Temples to attend their SupremeQueen Visits.

We are planning fun-filled fund raising events so keep aneye on the news so you can plan to join in.

There are a lot of us who justcan’t stand the cold CanadianWinters and migrate to Florida

every year. It is great to be warm andrelaxed but most of us do miss thecamaraderie of our Brothers and FellowNobles. So when Sahib Shrine put on aCanada Day Celebration luncheon onThursday February 18th, it startedanother migration to Sarasota.

Two of my buddies called me to see ifI wanted to go. At first I was a bithesitant because I didn’t have my fez orany clothing that said Rameses or ShebaShrine Club. It was the persistence of myfriends Noble Paul Laureyssens of NewBeaver Shrine Club and Noble Ron Ploder

Canada Day celebrated in FebruaryPresident of Viking Shrine Club thatpushed me to go. The fact that Ron wasgoing to drive and Paul knew where itwas also played into my decision. Oh Ishould mention that our wives Sheena,Shirl and Sandra would also spend theday shopping in Sarasota (and I do meanSPEND).

Now back to reality. We arrived atSahib and were greeted in true Shrinerfashion and as “First Timers” the three ofus were also given an extra “Salaam”.After signing in our next stop was theOasis.

It was here that we started seeingfamiliar faces from Rameses and otherCanadian Temples. Our Canadian hostPast Potentate Ill. Sir Ray Caustonintroduced us to a number of Sahib

Shriners including Potentate Carroll G.Scribner.

Ray has been coming here for the last22 years and today he was to speak onour New Montreal Hospital. So afterdrinking some American Camels Milk anddiscussing Canadian and AmericanPolitics it was time for lunch. Everyonemoved into the banquet hall and as ourAmerican Brothers sat at their tables, we“The Canadian Contingent” were pipedin. What a great honour this was for thetwenty-three of us to be recognized bymore than one hundred and fifteenAmerican Brothers.

Later, the ten “First Timers” whichincluded the three of us were recognizedindividually. Past Potentate Ill. Sir BenHughes was also given homage as theoldest Past Potentate of Rameses and theoldest to attend the luncheon.

After lunch, P.P. Ill. Sir Ray took thepodium and gave a fantastic overview onour new Canadian Shriners Hospital forChildren, complete with a slidepresentation. This was well received by allNobles, especially our American ShrineBrothers who presented Ray with aCertificate of Appreciation and gave hima thunderous round of applause. Thisbrought a fantastic event to a close.

Our February meeting was well attended to participate in the Annual Chili Cook-Off. There were fiveparticipants with varied textures of chili. But, to call

something “The Best Chili Ever” implies that there is no roomfor improvement. The winner, Noble Keith McKay, PP, who alsocooks a “wicked” burger with fried onions and tastyingredients, was presented with a trophy for the best ever chili.

We can only hope that the other chili cooks will continueperfecting the chili work that began on the Texas/Mexicanborder and that we continue testing well after the last rich andspicy remnant is licked clean off the bowl. The ultimate chilishould have a rich, complex chili flavour that combines sweet,bitter, hot, fresh, fruity elements in balance and have a robust,meaty, beefy flavor.

Bingo Chair, Noble Chris is doing a great job, co-ordinatingthe Bingo “monetizing” the efforts of the runners and hispresence to generate monies for the transportation fund.

Noble Ambassador, Don Rowe has been communicating welland keeping us informed about what is happening aroundShrinedom.

Reading the latest Papyrus, I have noted that the Divan havenot mentioned about membership growth.

Whilst browsing through Masonic Social Media, a PastMaster from Iowa has made a few suggestions to retain andincrease membership.

• Start with one email (mail for those who disdain theinternet) survey form requesting members about the strengthsand weaknesses of their Lodge or Shrine Unit and of their ownpersonal lives.

• Ask them about their hobbies, interests and of theirpersonal backgrounds such as married, children, education,profession, occupation and special interests etc. In other words,attempt to find the commonalities.

• Based on the above assessment, have a hobby night, anarmed forces night displaying military and armed forces regalia,have a veteran such as Past Potentate, Illustrious Sir RonaldGroshaw or V.W. Bro. Robert Holliday, give a presentation. Whatabout other hobbies or special interests?

• There are a myriad of Masonic and Shrine Educationprograms covering lectures, landmarks, history of our Craft,Shrine, Scottish Rite, York Rite and other concordant bodies.

• In the preliminary survey, request the members to identifyany other areas of Masonry they would like to have a discussionon, as opposed to a presentation. In other words, encouragingparticipation.

• Invite subject matter non-Mason experts from outside andhave an early repast so that the experts can leave at 7.30 p.m.

• Have a jazz night. What about a karaoke night? There are many possibilities to sustain growth! Finally, let’s

respect, show kindness and have compassion for our brethren.

Winter is almost over, the snowbirds are thinkingabout coming home and minnows are on the ice.Curling Minnows that is.

The boys in plaid came home with the Minnow trophy fromthe Whitefish Curling Bonspiel. I am told that I could mentionthat this is the second consecutive year Muskoka won theMinnow Trophy (strategically “losing” the first game to theDivan to enjoy a bit of a sleep-in on Saturday) and while NoblesKen, Clarence and Kyle don’t like to brag, it only took a team ofthree to bring it all home. A lotta pressure for next year!

When I asked what else happened in Barrie I was told “whathappens at the Whitefish stays at the Whitefish” so there’s notmuch else to report here.

Please make plans to save the date of Saturday July 16thand join us in Bracebridge for our annual Muskoka Shrine ClubSurf and Turf dinner. This is also the weekend of the famousMuskoka Arts and Crafts Show! Where else would you wantspend a July weekend but in Muskoka?

They’re family and friends. That’s how Belleville’s Danielle Ling describes membersof the Shriner’s Club.

“Our local Shriners are both family and friends, who sopassionately and selflessly give everything while asking fornothing,” said Ling. “My hope is the community understandsthe importance of these men who have made the difference in(the lives) of thousands of kids from all around the world and,best of all, they made a difference in my kid.”

Ling’s history with the group goes back over 20 years whenher son, Stephen, was referred to the Montreal Shriner’sHospital.

“Stephen has been a Shrine Kid since 1994. He was bornwith a complex and complicated form of fibular hemimelia,which at that time most doctors were doing an amputation,”explained Ling.

Fibular hemimelia is a rare congenital limb deficiency, whichleft Stephen with a leg length discrepancy.

Twenty-one years and 36 surgeries later Stephen is able towalk and is currently a third-year medicalstudent.

Ling’s appreciation for what the Shrinershave done for her and her family is expansive.

“We’d been to many hospitals but nothingcompared to the Shriners. There’s a sense of

peace when you go in there, you knoweverything’s going to be okay.”

Ling goes on to add it wasn’t justStephen’s body they provided carefor.

“There were social workers andchild life specialists to treat not onlythe bones but the mind and soul aswell. Social workers would speak toStephen on a daily basis makingsure that he himself was mentally

and emotionally prepared to continueon with his care.”

The Shriners umbrella of care alsocovered Ling who says she sometimes“lost” herself in Stephen’s medicalcare.

“They ensured that I hadsomeone to speak with as well.They helped us as a whole family. It

wasn’t just Stephen, it was all of us.” The Shriners also lessened financial stress

by helping with food, gas, accommodations

and meals for the frequent trips to Montreal as well asthousands of dollars spent on leg braces and medical devices.

“We travelled those highways hundreds of times, sometimesthree times in a month we had to drive up there with him.”

Ling describes her experience with the Shriners over the pasttwo decades as “life-altering” for both her and her son.

“The Shriners made me who I am today and I absolutely lovemy life, I wouldn’t change a thing about the past at all. I wouldjust love to pay it forward and do the exact same thing that theShriners did for me with being a doctor,” said Stephen, in arecorded video shared by his mother.

“I met Stephen in 2001, I drove Stephen and Danielle in theparade, He never stopped smiling,” recalled Shriner Bob Ridley.

Through the many pictures Ling has of her son throughoutthe years, and at various stages of treatment, that smile wasever-present.

The Shriners help thousands of children every year throughtheir 22 pediatric specialty hospitals in North America. The careis provided free of charge.

In addition to medical care many of these hospitals areactively engaged in research, searching for cures to cripplingchildhood diseases and better treatments for burn injuries.

“The nurses become family, the staff surgeons becomefamily. It’s compassion. They become totally involved with thefamilies in a good way,” said Ridley.

For him, it’s all worth it. “My first time down to Montreal Hospital I had this girl,

three or four years old, wrapped her arms around my legs andsaid ‘thank you, Mr. Shriner.’ I had to leave; the tears were justflowing down my face. She was smiling, she was happy to bethere. And all the pain these kids have got to be going throughbut they’re all smiling.”

Vitamin D DeficiencySevere vitamin D deficiency is becoming more
