In an effort to expand its offerings, Paradise

Valley Mall recently added the Paradise

Valley Express, a trackless “steam train” that

rides around the mall with kids (and kids at

heart) in tow in the attached coal car and

passenger cars. The first time we entered the

mall, unbeknownst to this new attraction,

my train-obsessed children’s ears perked up

as the whisper of the train’s whistle echoed

through the mall’s corridors. We hunted the

train down at its “station” (by the Children’s

Play Area, natch!), and I would have shelled

out any amount of money -- and have since

done so -- to get them on that train. But,

really, it’s a small price to pay ($3 per rider)

to see those smiles.

The word ‘Haboob’ can send my two-year-

old into a fit of giggles. My four-year-old won’t

even say ‘Haboob’ for fear he’ll be sent to his

room for spouting a naughty word. And while

most of the country may not know what it is,

the greater Phoenix area is abuzz with the word

‘Haboob’. A Haboob is defined as sandstorm

common in dry, arid regions. To us locals, a

Haboob equates to the literal 50-mile-wide

wall of dust that enveloped the Valley in early

July officially kicking off our monsoon season

with zero visibility on the roads, delayed flights,

power outages leaving close to 10,000 residents

in the dark, and a teasing smattering of rain.

Oh, and a thick layer of dust on everything in

its path. Welcome home, Haboobs.

I shouldn’t be this obsessed with a grocery

store, but a trip to the recently renovated Fry’s

Signature Marketplace at Tatum and Shea

boulevards always makes me smile. The store

is simply stunning with upscale services such as

valet and covered parking, a sushi counter; olive

bar, salad bar, and hot food bar; unbelievable

bakery; wine cellar; and much more. My favorite

part is that this is the first and only Fry’s to offer

in-store cooking classes. Chef-taught classes are

offered six-days a week, a mix of noontime Lunch

and Learn sessions as well as night classes starting

at 6:00 p.m. The classes are seasonal – August’s

class schedule is packed with fun themes such as

the Frozen Desserts, Salad – it’s what’s for dinner,

and the Labor Day Picnic classes.

As chief of staff around my household, the

thing I look forward to most when travelling is the

joy in knowing someone else will be making the

beds, scrubbing the bathroom and making every

meal. and if the hotel is sumptuous enough,

I don’t even care where I end up. Motivated

with the knowledge that summer heat keeps the

less hearty souls away, I went digging nearby

in search of what local bargains were to be

had. The gem I unearthed was the Montelucia

Resort. Once ensconced in room, icy air blasted

all day, the food was divine, and the giant pool

was practically ours alone. There was even an

“awesome” game room to deposit the kids (and

they believed they were the lucky ones) and

someone else made the beds everyday!

Why did I go to El Hefe? Simple enough

explanation. I was chasing a rumor alleging

beer there flowed directly out of the table

and into customers’ glasses on command.

It was true! Coors Light and Dos Equis

sincerely flowed from a double-headed tap

which came up right through the five best

(in my opinion) tables in the house, while

an electronic screen embedded into the

tabletop kept a running tab. As if the magic

beer wasn’t enough to make the trip to El

Hefe, there was also delicioso guacamole,

rico tacos and assistant manager Devin Kelly,

so friendly and funny, making his way from

table to table making everyone feel like an

old friend. Check out Scottsdale’s new boss!

There are few people in the Valley who

are not familiar with Susie Timm, the vibrant

banker-turned-foodie/website owner/social

media queen/PR and media maven. Okay,

enough, I’m running out of backslashes. With

her company, GirlMeatsFork.com, Susie

does “marketing and media for a variety of

clients who want to maximize their exposure

and create a grassroots campaign and a cult

following. I focus primarily on the food and

beverage industry.” It sounds very official,

but Susie admits that her job really requires

her to “eat and drink my way through the

US on assignments, articles and projects. It

pretty much rules.”

Yeah, we’re jealous. But Susie didn’t get to

where she is by accident. This entrepreneur

gives some sage advice: “When it comes to

sales, nothing is personal. Do what you say

you are going to do the first time, and never

compromise your ethics or integrity.”
