Roland S. Martin

A nationally syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate, Roland Martin is the authorof Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith and Speak, Brother! A BlackMan's View of America.

An insightful and provocative analyst, Mr. Martin has appeared numerous times onMSNBC, FOX News, Court TV, BET Nightly News, BBC News, National Public Radio,

The Word Network, America's Black Forum, American Urban Radio Networks, the TomJoyner Morning Show, and NPR's “News and Notes.”

He is the former executive editor/general manager of the Chicago Defender, the nation's largest Blackdaily newspaper. He previously served as owner/publisher of Dallas-Fort Worth Heritage, a Christianmonthly newspaper. He also has worked as managing editor of the Houston Defender and the DallasWeekly, which he led to a number of local, state and national journalism awards. He has won more than20 professional awards for journalistic excellence, including a regional Edward R. Mr. Martin is a 1987 graduate of Jack Yates High School–Magnet School of Communications, and a 1991graduate of Texas A&M University, where he earned a bachelor's in journalism. He is studying to receivehis master's in Christian communications at Louisiana Baptist University.

Sister Carol Keehan

Sister Carol Keehan, DC, MBA, is the ninth president and chief executive officer of theCatholic Health Association of the United States (CHA). She is responsible for allassociation operations and leads CHA's staff at offices in Washington, D.C., andin St. Louis.

Sister Carol has worked in administrative and governance positions at hospitals spon-sored by the Daughters of Charity for more than 35 years. Most recently, she was the

board chair of Ascension Health's Sacred Heart Health System, Pensacola, Fla. Previously,she served as president and chief executive officer of Providence Hospital.

Sister Carol is a representative to the International Federation of Catholic Health Care Associations ofthe Pontifical Council for Pastoral Health Care. She has served on the boards of the Catholic HealthAssociation of the United States, of which she is a past chairperson. In addition, she serves on thefinance committee of the Archdiocese of Washington.

Her numerous awards and honors include the American Hospital Association's Trustee Award; The ProEcclesia et Pontifice Cross (Cross for the Church and Pontiff) bestowed by Pope Benedict XVI and theAmerican Cardinals’ Encouragement Award.

She earned a bachelor’s in nursing from St. Joseph's College, Emmitsburg, Md., where she graduatedmagna cum laude, and a master’s in business administration from the University of South Carolina,Columbia, S.C.

Janice L. Dreachslin

Janice L. Dreachslin, PhD, is professor of Health Policy and Administration in theManagement Division at the Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate ProfessionalStudies in Malvern, Penn. and is professor in charge of biotechnology and health indus-try management for the campus. She earned her doctorate and bachelor’s in sociologyfrom Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. Dr. Dreachslin is the recipient of the 1994Penn State Great Valley Graduate Center Award for Teaching Excellence, the 1999

award for service excellence and the 2003 award for excellence in research and scholar-ship. Dr. Dreachslin has worked in the fields of health and human service administration for

more than 30 years. She has consulted in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia and isthe author of numerous publications and presentations in health industry and general management. Dr.Dreachslin has extensive professional and academic experience, having served as director of ConsultingServices at Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities. She is a member of the American PublicHealth Association, the Academy of Management, the Association of University Programs in HealthAdministration and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Dreachslin is author of the firstacademic book on strategic diversity management in healthcare, Diversity Leadership, published in June1996 by the American College of Healthcare Executives’ Health Administration Press.

Vice Admiral Adam Robinson Jr.

Vice Admiral Adam Robinson Jr., MD, a native of Louisville, Ky., is the chief of the NavyMedical Corps. He entered the naval service in 1977 and holds a Doctor of Medicine fromthe Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, through the Armed Forces HealthProfessions Scholarship Program. Following completion of his surgical internship atSouthern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, he was commissioned.

The author of numerous presentations and publications, Admiral Robinson holds fellow-ships in the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal

Surgery. He is a member of the Le Societe Internationale de Chirurgie, the Society of Black AcademicSurgeons, and the National Business School Scholastic Society, Beta Gamma Sigma. He holds certifica-tion as a Certified Physician Executive from the American College of Physician Executives.

Admiral Robinson’s personal decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (twoawards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards),Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and variousservice and campaign awards.

Richard Cordova

Richard D. Cordova, MHA, FACHE, is the president and chief executive officer of ChildrensHospital Los Angeles. Prior to joining Childrens Hospital, Mr. Cordova was president of theSouthern California Region of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Kaiser FoundationHospitals.

Hispanic Business Magazine named Mr. Cordova one of the “Top 100 Hispanic Leaders” in2003 and 2005. He was selected by Modern Healthcare’s readers as one of the “100 Most

Powerful People in Healthcare in 2006.” He was also named “Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare for2008” by Modern Healthcare.

Mr. Cordova currently serves as a member of the board of the California Children’s Hospital Association andNational Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions. He also has served as a member of theboard for the California Healthcare Association, the California Chamber of Commerce, the CaliforniaAssociation of Public Hospitals and the Hospital Association of Southern California.

Mr. Cordova is a founding member of the National Forum for Latino Healthcare Executives; chair of theInstitute for Diversity in Health Management; and chair of the board of trustees of the Tomás Rivera PolicyInstitute of the School of Policy, Planning and Development at the University of Southern California.

Mr. Cordova is board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow. He received a bachelor’s inbusiness administration from California State University, Los Angeles, and his master’s in business adminis-tration from the Graziado School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University.

William D. Petasnick

William D. Petasnick, MHA, FACHE, is chairman of the American Hospital Association Boardof Trustees and president and CEO of Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital and theFroedtert & Community Health System, Milwaukee. Prior to joining Froedtert, he wasdeputy director and chief operating officer, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; direc-tor of operations/chief operating officer, University of North Carolina Hospital; and senior

associate director, University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics.

Mr. Petasnick has served as chair of the AHA Task Force on Delivery System Fragmentation and has servedon the Governing Council of the Section for Metropolitan Hospitals. He also served on the AHA Task Forceon Delivery System Organization, as an AHA representative to the National Resident Matching Program andex officio member of the Committee on Health Professions.

He is a board member of the Greater Milwaukee Committee, Metropolitan Milwaukee Association ofCommerce, Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin and the Downtown Rotary Club of Milwaukee. He hasserved as chair of AAMC’s Council of Teaching Hospitals. He also has chaired the board of the WisconsinHospital Association and served on its Council on Public Policy.

Mr. Petasnick is board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow. He also is an adjunct associ-ate professor of health management at the University of Iowa. He earned a bachelor’s degree from theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s in health administration from the University of Minnesota.

Darius Brooks

Mr. Darius Brooks is best known for placing such treasures in gospel music history as“Safe in His Arms,” “My Mind’s Made Up,” “If I Be Lifted” and many others. He hasreturned with “The Tommies Reunion,” featuring former members of The ThompsonCommunity Singers. Side A: Live in Chicago was nominated for two 2008 StellarGospel Music Awards: “Choir of the Year” and “Traditional Choir of the Year.” Side B, thesecond highly anticipated release and DVD compilation of both releases (Side A & B)

includes new music.

In 2006, Mr. Brooks garnered solo success for his project entitled My Soul. Among rave reviews andnumerous television appearances he garnered two final round Stellar Gospel Music Award nominationsfor it: “CD of the Year” and “Recorded Music Packaging of the Year.” My Soul also found a home on theBillboard Charts for 20 weeks.

For the last two decades, Mr. Brooks has thrived in almost every musical capacity imaginable from song-writer, singer and accompanist, to arranger and producer for a host of Gospel luminaries includingShirley Caesar, Vickie Winans, and the late Rev. Milton Brunson, jazz legend Ramsey Lewis, R&B iconsAretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder, and current chart-topper Avant.

Mr. Brooks began Journey Music Group (JMG) in 1999. Located just outside downtown Chicago, theentertainment firm houses a state-of-the-art recording studio, record label and music production division.Brooks serves as musical director for Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition and mentors vocal-ists and musicians through his nonprofit Foundation.

VeLois Bowers

VeLois Bowers is currently the senior vice president, Diversity and Inclusion, at TrinityHealth in Novi, Mich., the nation’s fourth largest Catholic healthcare system. Ms.Bowers leads the development and implementation of short- and long-term strategies,plans and programs within Trinity Health’s Diversity and Inclusion work plan. Shereports directly to the President and CEO.

Until January 2007, Ms. Bowers served as vice president, Diversity and Inclusion at theKellogg Company. She joined Kellogg in late 2004 after spending five years at the Whirlpool Corporation,where she served as vice president, Global Diversity. In this role, she developed and implemented a widerange of diversity strategies and initiatives for employees and the community of Benton Harbor, Mich.Prior to Whirlpool, she held a number of human resources roles within Kellogg, where she last served asdirector for staffing, employee relations and diversity. She formerly worked for Western MichiganUniversity for seven years in Kalamazoo, Mich. in varying leadership roles, and in Human Resources.

She holds a bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She is amember of several boards and professional organizations including the National Association of AfricanAmericans in Human Resources, Network for Executive Women, University of Arkansas FoundationBoard, founding member of the Council for World Class Communities, and the chair of the ConferenceBoard–Diversity and Inclusion Council.

James Gauss

Jim Gauss, MHA, chief executive officer of Witt/Kieffer, has participated in more than 600 execu-tive search consulting engagements for a wide variety of medical centers, teaching and com-

munity hospitals, physician group practices, consulting firms and otherhealth-related organizations nationwide.

He has counseled hundreds of boards and chief executive officers on a range of issuesincluding the role of today’s governing boards, leadership in healthcare, executive compen-

sation, succession planning, leadership development, executive performance review and thepersonal and professional skills necessary to succeed in today’s changing healthcare industry. He is a nation-al speaker on multiple subjects.

Jim began his career in hospitals and long-term care organizations. He has more than 20 years in healthcareexecutive search, including engagements with some of the nation’s most prestigious medical centers andhealth systems, as well as healthcare associations and group practices. He has worked with clients in someof the most heavily penetrated managed care markets in the country.

Jim moved to southern California in 1986 to establish the firm’s three western offices. He has a full apprecia-tion of both the payor and provider sides of healthcare delivery, while assisting in shaping the managementteams of many of today’s most recognized health systems. He received his bachelor’s degree from LakelandCollege in Wisconsin and his master’s in health administration from Washington University in Saint Louis, Mo.

Melvin Hall

As President and CEO of Press Ganey Associates Inc., Melvin Hall, PhD, provides leadershipand direction for industry leaders in healthcare performance improvement solutions acrossthe United States.

Dr. Hall began his career with Press Ganey in 1993 as the head of research and develop-ment. Prior to being named CEO in October 2000, he was the company’s chief operating

officer for nearly five years.

Dr. Hall is frequently called upon to speak at national conferences including the World Health Care Congress,the Harvard School of Public Health and Public Policy, the Society for Ambulatory Care Professionals, theNational Association for Home Care, AHA Forum and the Society for Human Resources Professionals. Hehas been published in the Journal of Health Care Marketing, Hospitals and Health ServicesAdministration, Journal for Healthcare Quality, Health Journal of Healthcare Material Management, andNon-Profit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. He frequently is quoted in the Wall Street Journal, ModernHealthcare and other national publications.

Dr. Hall serves as a board member of the National Quality Forum Blue Ribbon Panel and the local chapter ofthe Chamber of Commerce. He is also an active member of numerous organizations including the NationalCenter for Healthcare Leadership, REAL Services, the Medical Education Foundation and the NationalQuality Forum.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Taylor University and his doctorate and certificate in executive man-agement from the University of Notre Dame.

Yolanda Partida

Yolanda Partida, MSW, DPA, is the national program director for Hablamos Juntos (We SpeakTogether), a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation initiative to develop practical solutions to lan-guage barriers in healthcare. Under her leadership Hablamos Juntos has become the premiernational resource on language access and services in healthcare. Hablamos Juntos is locatedat the UCSF Fresno Center for Medical & Education Research in California.

Dr. Partida also has extensive experience in public teaching and private hospital administration,public health administration and in private consulting. She has served as deputy director of health and humanservices for San Diego County; assistant administrator for University Medical Center (formerly Valley MedicalCenter), and assistant director of ambulatory care with Fresno County Health Services Agency.

Kimberly K. Sharp

Kimberly Sharp is vice president of Diversity for HCA and is responsible for leading the strategicplanning, development and implementation of diversity and inclusion programs throughout

HCA’s 170+ hospitals, outpatient surgery centers and other areas of operations to ensurediversity and inclusion strategies are embedded in all aspects of business operations. In 2005,Ms. Sharp led the education and empowerment of hospital-level executives toward the devel-opment of facility level diversity plans.These plans are being deployed at the community level

with national support through enterprise-wide infrastructure and training programs. In 2006,leadership accountability was defined through the development of five-year goal and work plans

for all senior officers.

Prior to her current position, Ms. Sharp served as vice president of Retirement Programs and EmployeeCommunications for HCA. Ms. Sharp serves on the boards of the Center for Women’s Health Research atMeharry Medical College and Community Nashville (previously known as the National Conference forCommunity and Justice). Juana S. Slade

Juana Spears Slade is the director of diversity and language services for AnMed Health inAnderson, S.C., serving the residents of northwest South Carolina and northeast Georgia.AnMed Health is the state’s largest private, nonprofit health system, and was one of the firstto dedicate full-time resources to the issues of effective diversity management, cultural com-petence and medical interpretation. From 1994 to 2001, Ms. Slade held numerous positions in

public relations and corporate communications at Greenville Hospital System (GHS) inGreenville, S.C. Most notably, in 1999 she was named the organization’s first Communication

Strategist responsible for the development and implementation of strategic communication initiatives; and in 1997she was a key member of the GHS team that established South Carolina's first hospital-based diversity program.

Ms. Slade is actively involved in her community serving on numerous nonprofit boards and committees. She ischairman of the board of directors for the United Way of Anderson County—the first African American to serve inthis capacity. She is a member of the United Way of America’s National Women’s Leadership Council and wasthe 2006 recipient of the ATHENA Award presented by the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce.

Wilma Alvarado-Little

Wilma Alvarado is the director of community outreach and dissemination, University at Albany’sCenter for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities and co-chair of the Board for the NationalCouncil on Interpreting in Health Care. A medical interpreter and trainer with more than 20 years ofexperience in the healthcare field, she has dedicated her career to professionalizing medical inter-preters. Along with having extensive presentation experience on these issues and related topics,Ms. Alvarado-Little provides education to healthcare institutions on the implementation of hospital

and community-based interpreter programs and the role of the medical interpreter.

She brings to the panel insights on work at the national level to guide the development of national standardsfor healthcare language services and research underway at the University at Albany, at SUNY, to inform discussions oninterpreter training.

Rosalyn Cole

Rosalyn L. Cole, MBA, is associate director of the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Sheserves as a member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for the daily operations ofthis 169 bed medical, surgical, long-term care facility.

Ms. Cole served as associate director for administration and acting medical center director in Fargo,N.D. She led the Fargo VA Medical Center in their quest for improvements in diversity management.

Ms. Cole served as chair, Special Initiatives Committee on the Under Secretary for Health’s DiversityAdvisory Board. She led the successful partnership with the American Hospital Association, Institute for Diversity inHealth Management’s Summer Enrichment Program and Diversity Award Program.

Ms. Cole received her master’s in business administration with a concentration in healthcare administration from CityUniversity in Bellevue, Wash. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and NationalAssociation of Health Services Executives.

Adrienne Crowe

Adrienne Crowe, MBA, served Bank of America in a variety of capacities, most recently as regional pres-ident, Sacramento, Calif., and as senior vice president/regional vice president for the Sacramento

Regional Commercial Banking Office. In this role, she managed a commercial banking office with$1.5 billion in loan commitments, $200 million in deposits and $29 million in gross annual revenue;a retail branch with $190 million in deposits and $50 million in new consumer and small businessloans and the Government Services for Northern California with several billion dollars in depositsthat included the State of California as a major client. During her career with Bank of America, she

has held leadership roles at banking offices in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Hong Kong, San Francisco,Hayward and Oakland.

In addition to previously serving as chairperson for the Board of Directors for Catholic Healthcare West and MercyHealthcare Sacramento, Ms. Crowe served on the boards of the United Way, Valley Vision and the Long BeachChamber of Commerce. She is a former member of the editorial board for Comstock's Magazine.

Ms. Crowe holds a master’s in business administration in finance and an bachelor’s in sociology from the University ofCalifornia at Berkeley, and was the recipient of the Black Women of Achievement Award from the NAACP LegalDefense and Educational Fund in 1997.

Joel Ginsberg

Executive Director of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, Joel Ginsberg, JD, MBA, has broadexperience in management, public policy and law. Before becoming executive director, Mr. Ginsbergworked by providing management consulting services to nonprofits and government agencies.

He held several appointed positions within the Clinton Administration, including serving as a specialassistant to Doris Meissner, commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, as a

search manager in the Office of Presidential Personnel at the White House, as a team leader for VicePresident Al Gore's Reinventing Government Initiative and as a special assistant for Congressional

Liaison at the U.S. Information Agency. Mr. Ginsberg's first job after graduate school was as a fellow in the Health Officeof the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources, chaired by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA), where heworked on the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act and the Ryan White CARE Act.

Mr. Ginsberg currently co-chairs the Advocacy and Policy Committee of the Commission to End Health Disparities andin this capacity serves ex-officio on its Steering Committee. The Commission comprises more than 50 medical societieswho are working to eliminate healthcare disparities based in race and ethnicity. Mr. Ginsberg also serves as vice presi-dent of Access Institute for Psychological Services, a nonprofit organization in San Francisco that provides low-costmental health services to the community through a supervised training program for mental health professionals.

Romana Hasnain-Wynia

Romana Hasnain-Wynia, PhD, is director of the Center for Healthcare Equity and associate professor atNorthwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Ill. Previously she was the vice presi-dent of research for the Health Research and Educational Trust, the research and educational affiliateof the American Hospital Association.

Dr. Hasnain-Wynia is an expert in healthcare disparities research and serves as the principal investiga-tor for a number of national studies. She was the lead investigator in:Developing a Uniform Framework

for Collecting Race, Ethnicity, and Primary Language Data in Hospitals; Linking Race and Ethnicity Data toInpatient Quality of Care Measures; and Integrating Race, Ethnicity, Language and other Demographic Measures

with Clinical Quality Measures in Electronic Health Records. She currently serves as the principal investigator of a large port-folio of projects that examine the use of patient demographic data in addressing disparities and improving healthcare qualityfor diverse populations. In addition, she is the co-principal investigator of the project, Assessing the Impact of the CMS Payfor Performance Initiative (P4P) by Simulating Alternative Quality Scoring Methods. Dr. Hasnain-Wynia serves on a numberof national expert advisory panels and is currently a senior advisor to The Joint Commission on Hospitals, Language andCulture: A Snapshot of the Nation and to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s national initiative to reduce disparities incardiac care, Expecting Success: Excellence in Cardiac Care.

Frederick D. Hobby

Fred Hobby, MS, joined the Institute for Diversity in Health Management (IFD) as president and CEO in2005 with more than 25 years of hospital experience. Mr. Hobby will lead IFD into its second decade ofservice, developing tools and resources to enhance diversity in our nation’s hospitals and helpinghealthcare organizations with diversity activities.

Before joining IFD, Mr. Hobby spent 10 years with the Greenville (S.C.) Hospital System (GHS), a 1,086-bed acute-care teaching hospital system. As administrator and chief diversity officer at GHS, he devel-

oped and implemented a systemwide diversity initiative that is nationally recognized for its comprehensive-ness and success. Its components include diversity training and education for the system’s 7,200 employees as well as anextensive language interpretation center to better serve patients who speak a language other than English.

Fred received a bachelor’s in history and political science from Kentucky State University in Frankfort and a master’s in soci-ology from Washington University in St. Louis.

In 1999, he was named “Senior Executive of the Year” by the National Association for Health Services Executives. Gordon N. Litwin

Gordon N. Litwin, JD, is chairman of the Board of Trustees of Meridian Health System, an integratedhealth system in New Jersey that includes one teaching and two community hospitals with 1,200beds, five nursing homes, more than 1,300 physicians, extensive home care, ambulance andother healthcare services. He was previously the chairman of the board of Riverview MedicalCenter and was a lead trustee in forging a merger with two other hospitals to form Meridian in1996. He has been recognized by the New Jersey Hospital Association as Trustee of the Year in

2005, is a recipient of the Monmouth University Maurice Pollack Community Service Award, andwas the first recipient of the Spirit of Meridian Award in 2005. In 2007, Mr. Litwin was instrumental

in establishing the position of Vice President of Cultural Diversity at Meridian.

Mr. Litwin is an attorney engaged primarily in the practice of environmental and urban redevelopment law with the firmof Ansell Zaro Grimm & Aaron. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and Harvard Law School. Mr. Litwin serves as atrustee of the Scherman Foundation in New York City and the Mary Owen Borden Foundation in Princeton, N.J. He haspreviously served as the Mayor of Little Silver, N.J., and for many years as chairman of the board of BrookdaleCommunity College. He has been active in many other civic and charitable organizations in New Jersey.

John M. Lowe

John M. Lowe, PhD, is associate professor and director of the graduate program in health administra-tion at Simmons College, Boston, where he teaches healthcare quality, health systems and opera-tions management.

Dr. Lowe conducts research on applying continuous improvement methodologies to communityhealth issues. He directs a project with the National Center for Healthcare Leadership to incorporate

leadership competencies into health management curricula and leads HCA’s work in diversity inhealthcare management.

Dr. Lowe is chair of the board of Emerson Hospital (Concord, Mass.) and the Association of University Programs inHealth Administration in Washington, D.C. He is past chair of the Higher Education and Research Committee of theAmerican College of Healthcare Executives. He is also a member of the Health Professions Education Committee of theMayor’s Task Force on Health Disparities in Boston.

Dr. Lowe previously was vice president of the Health Research and Educational Trust, and research affiliate of theAmerican Hospital Association. He was dean for development and administration at Temple University School ofMedicine and served a postgraduate fellowship in health management at the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. Dr. Lowereceived a doctorate in public policy at the University of Illinois and a master’s in health administration from The OhioState University and a bachelor’s degree from Duke University.

Mary E. Medina

Mary E. Medina, JD, a veteran of the Greater New York health community, is leading the Greater NewYork Hospital Association’s (GNYHA) unparalleled initiative as founding executive director of the Centerfor Trustee Initiatives and Recruitment. She is responsible for recruiting candidates to serve on the gov-erning boards of hospitals and continuing care facilities with a special emphasis on identifying individu-als from underrepresented communities to enhance board composition and enrich the quality of

services delivered by member facilities. Prior to joining GNYHA, Ms. Medina served as the foundingexecutive director of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation’s Foundation and chief of staff to

the Chairman of the Board. Previously Ms. Medina worked at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, assumingpositions with increasing responsibilities and culminating in her appointment as the director of government relations.

Ms. Medina has been the recipient of numerous awards and in 2007 was named “Top 25 Women in Healthcare,” byModern Healthcare. She is on the boards of the Eastern Division of the American Cancer Society and the NationalForum for Latino Healthcare Executives.

Ms. Medina holds a juris doctor from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University and a master’s ofsocial work from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service.

Tamara L. Miller

Tamara L. Miller, JD, is the Deputy Director for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health andHuman Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights. In this capacity, Ms. Miller heads the Office’s CivilRights Division whose mandate is to ensure that people throughout our country have access toquality healthcare and social services without facing unlawful discrimination, through vigorousenforcement of civil rights. Ms. Miller has more than 22 years of experience in civil rights enforce-

ment and public service, which includes the Transportation Security Administration in theDepartment of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Air

Force. She is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel with 23 years of service.

Ms. Miller earned her her juris doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in 1985 and bachelor’s in governmentand international studies, with honors, from the University of Notre Dame in 1982. She has received numerous acco-lades throughout her career in public service, including the Transportation Security Administration Gold Award forLeadership in 2004.

Josephus Ollison

Josephus Ollison has given more than 25 years of his career to management, public speaking,fundraising and program development. He currently serves as a development strategist and consult-ant for the National Caucus and Center on Black Aged (NCBA). In his position, he manages publicservice events and cause-related marketing campaigns for NCBA. Mr. Ollison developed theemerging leaders program for NCBA and serves as the executive producer for NCBA’s 2008national conference on “Health Care–State of Emergency Forum.”

Mr. Ollison is founder and president of Emergency Patient Care. He was director of corporate affairs forThe National Association For Equal Opportunity in Education (NAFEO) and responsible for the develop-

ment of the historically Black colleges Digital Divide program through NAFEO. Likewise, he was in development for theAARP Foundation and featured by AARP Foundation for his work with a prescription drug program for seniors.

Mr. Ollison received a bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from Saint Augustine’s College at Raleigh, N.C.He was awarded “Who’s Who among Rising Young Americans” and he received a Certificate of Excellence award fromAARP Foundation.

Guadalupe Pacheco

Guadalupe Pacheco, MSW, serves as a Public Health Advisor and Special Assistant to the DeputyAssistant Secretary for Minority Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Mr.Pacheco has occupied midlevel and senior-level management positions in nonprofit, state and fed-eral government agencies.

In his current capacity as special assistant to the Director for Minority Health, Mr. Pacheco is responsiblefor managing multiple projects that address health disparities of racial and ethnic minority communities.

He staffs a cultural competency portfolio through the Office of Minority Health’s Center for Linguistic andCultural Competence in Health Care. Mr. Pacheco also serves on departmental committees that focus on health literacy, lim-ited English proficiency issues, information technology, disaster preparedness, and border health issues.

Gary A. Puckrein

Gary A. Puckrein, PhD, is the president and CEO of the National Minority Quality Forum Inc. (NMQF),a nonprofit organization that he founded in 1998.

In April 2001, under Dr. Puckrein’s leadership NMQF launched National Minority Health Month(NMHM), in response to and in support of Healthy People 2010, a national health promotion anddisease prevention initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

NMHM is an inclusive initiative that addresses the health needs of African-Americans, Hispanics,Asians, Native Americans and other minorities. Dr. Puckrein also serves as the acting executive director

of the Alliance of Minority Medical Associations, which is a collaborative effort of the Asian and PacificPhysicians' Association, the Association of American Indian Physicians, the InterAmerican College of Physicians andSurgeons and the National Medical Association.

Dr. Puckrein serves on numerous healthcare advisory boards, including the National Advisory Board on HealthDisparities for the Health Research and Educational Trust, American Hospital Association; CLAS/Health DisparitiesExpert Panel, National Committee for Quality Assurance; Pharmacy Education Advisory Council, American Associationof Colleges of Pharmacy.

Yolanda Robles

Ms. Robles is the founder and president of CulturaLink, a company that helps organizations betterconnect to diverse communities through essential multicultural services in the areas of cultural con-sulting, cultural training, language services and bilingual/diversity staffing. Working for CulturaLink,Ms. Robles has developed numerous programs bridging cultural gaps within the work force andintegrating diverse staff and customers who are from different cultures.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Ms. Robles and her family emigrated to the United States when shewas a small child and quickly assimilated to the culture and local community, where she served as an

interpreter and cultural navigator for her family. Her personal and professional experiences in education andtraining laid the foundation for her desire to dedicate her life by working on diversity issues to increase the level of cultur-al competence in U.S. companies. She is a member of The Joint Commission’s Long-Term Care/Assisted LivingAdvisory Council, National Forum for Latino Healthcare Executives, American Hospital Association’s Institute forDiversity in Health Management, among other recognized healthcare organizations.

Robert Otto Valdez

Robert Otto Valdez, PhD, MHSA, conducts policy analyses and research at the University of NewMexico where he serves as the executive director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Centerfor Health Policy and Professor of Family & Community Medicine and Economics. He is a seniorhealth scientist and a senior fellow at Emory University’s Institute for Advanced Policy Solutions.

Dr. Valdez received his doctorate from the RAND Graduate School for Public Policy Studies wherehe specialized in studies of healthcare financing and quality of care for children.

Dr. Valdez participates on numerous advisory boards, such as American Hospital Association Foster McGawPrize and the National Cancer Institute’s Hispanic Cancer Prevention and Control program. Arshia Wajid

Arshia Wajid, MPH, is the founder and president of the Association of Muslim Health Professionals(AMHP), which was established in 2004 to empower Muslim health professionals to improve the qualityand delivery of health services and increase access to care in America. In addition to fostering collab-oration among health professionals, AMHP is also committed to increasing awareness of the impor-tance of public health as a means to improving the overall health status of our communities.

Ms. Wajid received a master’s degree in public health and business administration from the Universityof Illinois. After completing a fellowship in hospital administration at the Stony Brook University Hospital

in Stony Brook, N.Y., she worked as a planning analyst in strategic development at St. James Hospital andHealth Centers in Chicago Heights. She currently is working as a senior financial analyst at Northwestern MemorialHospital in Chicago. She has volunteered as clinic coordinator at IMAN Health Clinic, a Muslim community-based clinic,serving a diverse uninsured and underinsured patient population on Chicago’s South Side.

Amy Wilson-Stronks

Amy Wilson-Stronks, MPP, CPHQ, is a project director in the Division of Standards and Survey Methodsand the principal investigator for The Joint Commission study Hospitals, Language, and Culture: ASnapshot of the Nation, a project funded by The California Endowment. She is the co-author ofHospitals, Language, and Culture: A Snapshot of the Nation Report of Findings released inMarch 2007.

Ms. Wilson-Stronks has been a leader of The Joint Commission’s work in the area of culturally andlinguistically appropriate patient-centered care and healthcare disparities. She also is directing their

work to assess and evaluate accreditation standards related to culturally and linguistically appropriateservices and is developing a comprehensive surveyor training program on issues related to culturally and linguisticallyappropriate services.

Ms.Wilson-Stronks entered healthcare as an occupational therapy volunteer at a small downtown Chicago hospital, laterworking in long-term care as a director of Activities and Psychosocial Programs, and subsequently as a quality improvementand compliance professional for a national substance abuse treatment program.

Ms. Wilson-Stronks earned her master’s of public policy in health policy and a graduate certificate in health administra-tion and policy from the University of Chicago. She is a certified professional in healthcare quality (CPHQ) and isresponsible for the development and maintenance of Joint Commission standards and survey processes.
