“And the L-RD said unto Moses: Speak unto the priests the children of Aaron, and say unto them: There shall none defile himself for the dead among his people...”

While this is a simple statement regarding the rules of Cohanim to this day, over time rabbinic interpretations have led to some interesting insights into this rather simple

guideline which teaches that priests should not come into contact with a corpse unless it is either 1) an immediate family member, or 2) a body that has none other to perform the burial for them. However, the 19th century rabbinic scholar Hatam Sofer writes that there is

a moral message to be found in the rule as well; as it says “the children of Aaron” as it emphasizes that the priests are all children of Aaron so we are warned at the time of burial to not forget the orphans; that in the concern to care for the dead, that we should not lose

our concern for the helpless among the living”

Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Aaron Flanzraich
