How did you start out as an artist?

Well, I studied design in the National Plas-c Arts School of the National Autonomous

University of Mexico (Escuela Nacional deArtes Plsticas of the Universidad NacionalAutnoma de Mxico). The faculty has a

umanist take given that there are only twoareers: design and visual communication,nd visual arts, and that being in perma-ent coexistence both elds tend to fuse.

he school is very traditional and demandslot of manual practice in the different toolsnd substratums. In fact I specialized in edi-

orial design, and its in the workshops that

started to experiment and combine tech-iques until I saturated my notebooks ofketches. It was then that the image turnedo typography and I found my way to createompositions.

love the juxtaposition of drawing and

ollage in your pieces. How would you

enerally describe your art in terms of

    our personal aesthetic?

I believe in the constant search, given through the process in which I create, I hreinvented that with which I started desnot having yet an unique technique. Ilieve I maintain an identity shown in the I manage the elements, in the solid spa

and in my selection of the chromatic ette. I look to provoke the spectator whatever its reaction is.

Where do you usually show your art?

you do a lot of commercial work as we

I like the editorial environment, the longevthe images and the printed typographic

How did you get started as a comic

    book artist/graphic novelist?

I drew my versions of childrens books myparents happened to have around when Iwas a little kid. I would obsessively makethese little books based on Peter and theWolf and The Smurfs and Michael Jackson.I still have a few. By age 9 or 10 Id discov-

ered Spider Man and X-Men and that wasit. I was hooked. I guess its the typical storyof sad, lonely kid who has trouble relating toother people escaping into fantasy throughcomic books. By the end of jr. high school Iwas embarassed by all of it, but in collegeI discovered Clowes and Ware and washooked all over again. Weekly trips to thecomics store became a big part of my lifeagain. I really immersed myself in the whole90s alt / literary / arty comics that were be-ing published by Drawn and Quarterly andFantagraphics. That informed a lot of whatI did over the next 10 years and to a largeextent, still does.

    Who are your inuences?

See above, plus Gary Panter, Julie Doucet,

John Porcellino, Debbie Dreschler, CaTyler, Ivan Brunetti, Seth, Joe Matt, Cheter Brown, Charles Burns, Ron Rege, FThunder. Etc. etc etc. Too many to list. Ialso heavily inuenced by 80s video gam

design, painters like Guston, Peter Saul, JNutt, Henry Darger. I just love visual cultufrom the trashiest to the most rened as lo

as its good. I listen to music almost all dlong, every day. Everything from lo- ma

ters like Franklin Bruno & Daniel Johnstto classic rock (Dylan, Neil Young, BruSpringsteen) to hip hop (Native Tongues,Wu-Tang, MF Doom).

When I rst saw your work (in Krame

Ergot), it reminded me somewhat of Li

da Barrys style from her news week

strips: very loose and casual, but lo

of details scrunched in sections. Ho

would you describe your style wh

    narrating your stories, particularly

My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down?

Thanks for the comparison. I really like hstuff. I actually have 3 distinct styles in t

    book: large panels, painterly, cinematic

approach to my dream comics; tiny, diaris-tic, obsessively drawn panels for my diarystrips; multiple panel, cubistcomics (show-ing different the same subject from differentpoints in time) for the portraits of both of myparents.

I nd it interesting that you seem veryfrank and honest about exploring sexu-

ality in your book. How did people re-

    ceive this openness?

I think most people nd it liberating in

some way. The people who are titillated byit might have missed the point, since itsultimately about bad meaningless sex and

longing for an actual connection based onlove.

And what were the reactions of those

    close to you?

Ive got my familys blessings for which Imgrateful. Any of my closest friends who ap-pear in the book are just attered. And some

people who appear in the book that Id lost

touch with have gotten back in touch. tsbeen a great experience all in all.

I see that you also do a lot of illustration

work. I love your New Yorker covers in par-

ticular. Do you enjoy doing that as much as

    your personal comics?

I do enjoy illustration work and in some ways

I work a little harder when I m getting paid re-ally well and I know my work will have a hugeexposure (in the case of the New Yorker). Thisalways stretches my skill set and I can bringback any lessons learned to my comics.

Aside from comics, what are your other

    projects? Interests?

Music, music videos and possibly some day a

lm or TV show based on my book. I ve got

serious about writing new songs and pforming after a 10 year hiaitus. It feels greLike riding a bicycle. I just played a shin Barcelona which was probably the msatisfying of my whole life. I was relaxed acomfortable and could feel the enthusia

How did Nice Package get its start? How

Nice Package was started by Ez in April of

    were both so passionate about.

Both of you have popular blogs and

keen eye for design. What made youoncentrate on packaging?

We both love the creativity that is possi-le with packaging. Visual presentation isomething that we are all exposed to on aonstant daily basis; from packaging at therocery store - driving our desire to pur-hase one item over the other to beautifully

wrapped gifts - the ones you cant wait to

sible with just the smallest touches of crativity is really inspiring to us.

Being in a partnership, what are yo

    roles in your business?

Working together has been great. Wevdenitely had some trial and error wor

How long have you had your journal? And

how did it come to be?

A Field Journal was started in 2007, the sum-mer after my rst year at college. Craft and

esign blogs were a new discovery for me athe time, and I decided on a whim to open alogger account. As a failed diarist, I wasntery convinced Id keep up with it then, but

omehow creating and sharing is somethingve found easy to do.

You have a very distinct style to your

work. How would you describe it?

m very drawn to pastels, especially in warm-r months. But I love rich colors, especially inutumn. Im not very sure how Id character-

ze my style - nostalgic perhaps. I do love theast and hope that shows through a little.

What has been your favourite project in

    your blog so far?

s hard to narrow it down so I guess I will gowith one of the biggest projects which washe Craft Closet I put together last year.Runners up would be the dollhouse and my

    irthday celebration.

    Who are your favourite artists?

Historically I love Neoclassicism Jacques-Louis David. I also love the DuBaroque, those serene genre scenes opulent still life paintings.

What is a typical day for you like?

Im a student so my schedule varies da

day. Its usually a mix of listening to lectustudying when I can, household choemailing, spending far too much timethe internet and of course spending timefreelance and creative projects.

    What attracts you to vintage?

Many factors draw me to vintage...I get excit-d about a garments history. I love that itemsan carry stories and life that come attached. Iave a great respect for that. Also, my person-l politics concerning waste, sweatshops, ex-ess, etc, really detract me from buying much

f anything new when so many perfectly usefulnd beautiful items already exist. I am happy

o share with others that vintage clothing cane really practical and a part of modern looks.buying something at my shop means that aerson will not be making a trip to the mall later

hat day, I nd that pretty pleasing.

f there is a particular decade, or era thatoure attracted to, what would it be? And

    why?

love the 50s! Circle skirts, wiggle dresses, ute hats and oxfords...they are all comingack around (possibly thanks to Mad Men?).

The 50s have an elegance and femininity thats unmatched if you ask me.

As a business owner, what is a typical dayor you like?

keep very busy! I work two other jobs outsidef my Etsy business, which means that most of

my shop work is at night or on the weekends.By far, the most exciting part of the processor me is getting to go shopping and hitting allf my favorite thrift stores, antique shops, and

intage stores. It is great fun to be able to shopreely and not be concerned with whetheromething ts or what excuse I can make for

myself to wear it. Shopping for other people iso much more exciting than shopping for my-elf! On a typical day, I will photograph and listeveral items, answer messages, package upeveral more items and get them ready to shiput at the post ofce the next morning.

What are your projects outside your v

    tage shop?

I recently nished my graduate work and

my MFA in Photography. I am now teaing a couple of Photo classes at a comnity college nearby and trying to make tto continue my own artwork! I also wor

an organic foods co-op market in my towit is one of those jobs I just cant seem to even though I dont quite have time for it good of people and awesome food!) I ahave three amazing dogs between my la and me and can often be found romparound the woods with them.

What would you attribute to this?

That is a tough question to answer, but are quite right. Just a week or so ago, 50-something aunt in Texas wrote me a saying that the Today Show predicted

Maybe it is shows like Mad Men glorify certain time periods or even priples of the green movement that are leing people back to classic styles that dneed to be recreated because there aremany great dresses that already exist. a cliche to say that fashions always co

How and when did Nadinoo get its start?

t was around this time last year that I -nally made the decision to leave my cosy

design job and set up Nadinoo. Designingfor a brand was a great experience but Imissed all the hands on processes involvedn making a garment, most of which youbecome very detached from working for ahuge company. So I was sat at my ofce

desk attempting to look busy while sketch-ng and dreaming up ideas of what Nadinoocould be? I loved the idea of hand sewing a

garment just for the intended wearer, mak-ng it special and unique for them.

Began my rst collection with only my -nal pay packet. Its a wonder what you canachieve with so little. I was only hand sew-ng very small quantities to start with, mostof which were custom orders with fabrics,

colours and sizes specied by the custom-er. I think setting up and selling online wasthe right move, as Nadinoo has developeda wonderful dedicated following, with cus-tomers from all over the world.

What got you interested in fashion?

From an early age I was excited aboutclothes. My mum used to sew my and my

sisters matching oral dresses with big

bows and puffy sleeves. I found the whoprocess fascinating, after nishing s

would offer me the scraps of left ov

fabrics and trims to use to make doclothes. During my time at art collegeremember pouring over Hussein Chlayan and Rei Kawakubos collectionloving how they manipulated clothing create 3Dimentional masterpieces. I wfortunate enough to meet my idol Hussin Chalayan and work under his creatidirection at Puma, for a shy guy his ide

were so brave and limitless. At universI became fascinated with Japanese dsigners and the art of experimental ptern cutting, which I enjoyed exploringmy nal collection. There is still so mu

more I would love to learn and experimewith in fashion, I hope that Nadinoo is juthe beginning.

Who or what inspires you most as

    designer?

I nd ladies fashion from the early to m

enjoy scouring vintage stores, ea mar-

he constructions that we wouldnt dreamof attempting today.

What would you say are some of the

challenges of operating a small busi-

    ness?

There are so many challenging aspectso running a small business. Every day Iwould probably give you a different an-swer. Todays would be the lack of hoursn a day--managing everything yourselfmeans you have very little time for your-self. Im currently working 24-7 as I havehe new season to design and make

alongside our big move to London at the

    end of the month.

Do you have employees or do you de-

    sign and create everything yourself?

Currently I design and hand make allhe collections myself, although I hopeo bring on some little helpers when we

move to London and a few professional

machinists. Setting up in Nuremberg,Germany was a great starting point butn order to move onto the next stage wedenitely need to be in a big city. I have

a wonderfully supportive partner who hasbeen in the apparel industry far longerhan I have, having his wisdom on board

has given Nadinoo a wonderful start.

What is a typical day for you like?

Im currently working on the new SprinSummer line, so I wake up grab a mof tea with me upstairs to the studio alook through my sketches to choose a dsign to work on for the day. I select t

right pattern block for the style and beto adapt it. I will cut and sew a toil (protype) to check the t and details work a

alter where needed. I then make the

nal sample in the correct fabrics and triwhich will be used in the photo shoots.course there are lots of other processin my daily routine, most of which I

without realizing anymore, all glamorostuff like washing and ironing the fabriI cant wait for a helping hand!

What are your goals for Nadinoo?

With our move to London I hope to etablish Nadinoo as a British label abuild on the companies infrastructuThis should hopefully prepare us for e

hibiting in trade shows later on this yemoving us into cute boutiques in key cies around the world. Im also still dreaing of setting up a Nadinoo boutique wa studio in the back where you can gour designs altered and customized to

I really want to keep Nadinoo true to values not losing the personal conne
