A reservoir of family fun belted by a bicycle path surrounded by nature

Yamaska National Park offers a landscape dominated by rich mature maple groves. This protected territory covers an area of 12.9 km². A 19 km cycle route crosses the park around the Choinière reservoir. This stretch of water extends over 4.5 km2 for the pleasure of lovers of nautical activities and swimming.

We spare no effort so that you can appreciate the rich natural and historical heritage of the park. Excursions on the water, hiking, swimming, fishing, puppet shows for children, evening chats, these are the full range of activities that are deployed to tickle your curiosity and above all, keep you busy!

THE NORTHERN DUSKY SALAMANDER PARK EMBLEM No, it’s not a lizard! Discrete small animals with moist skin and no scales, salamanders belong to the group of amphibians, just like frogs. Some species are known to be rare in Québec. This is the case for the Northern Dusky Salamander, found in the park’s forest streams where the water is clear and fresh. Devoid of lungs, this salamander “breathes” through its moist skin. Given its rarity across Québec, this species was chosen as the park’s animal emblem.

TRAIL LENGTH AND DURATION* LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY DEPARTURE

La Rivière – This trail provides a varied panorama. You will be engulfed by a dense pine forest and its intriguing environment. You will magically come upon Rivière Yamaska Nord as it exits from the forest at the foot of the Choinière dam. 2.5 km

loop 1 h E

Discovery and Visitors

centre

This trail is enhanced by a game of questions and abservations about nature for the whole family.

La Forestière – At a stone’s throw from the service area of the beach, La Forestière trail is home to a variety of wildlife and provides a great overview of the tree mosaic of the park. By walking through it, you will come across young hardwood forests and dense patches of evergreens, and then sense the greatness of the forest canopy of mature maple stands.

5.5 km loop

2 h E

La Digue – Sugar maples of which the huge trunks majestically flank the trail here and there, are a reminder of this species’ dominant rank in the forest mosaic of the park.

From the promontory formed by the stone wall of the Choinière levee, 560 metres long, you will have the perfect spot to spy on the habits of these species that utilize Réservoir Choinière, its shoreline and the forest edge to feed and to rest.

5.8 km loop

2 h E

La Pinède – Compact and dense massifs of fir trees, dominated by white pine, with undulating hills of fallow fields, passing by mature maple forests, you will be able to witness the various forest evolutionary stages along very short distances.

Pay special attention to details such as the discreet presence of a few former orchards, which are vestiges of a not-so-distant era. That is when the current park area was actually the setting of human occupation: country dwellers.

10.3 km loop

3 h 30 E

Le Grand-Tour – By bicycle or on foot, there is no better way to get a good overview of the park than to criss-cross it along the multifunctional path called Le Grand-Tour.

This journey will take you along Réservoir Choinère’s shoreline, where you will disappear into the enticing forest and then emerge to climb the hillsides of fallow fields. While discovering this path, you will also learn about the history of the great “lake”.

COMMON REED The common reed (Phragmite australis) is an exotic grass plant that has an invasive character. Although widespread in southern Quebec, this plant can form dense colonies once introduced into suitable environments, which has the effect of suffocating the natural vegetation of these sites and reducing the diversity of plant species.

To limit the spread of the common reed in the park, control, containment and eradication interventions are implemented this summer in the campsite’s living area. These interventions aim to remove the plant, or parts of the plant directly, by hand and using mechanical equipment, repeated mowing, removal of seeds, excavation, etc., and to install, where required, geomembranes to completely stem the growth of the colonies.

With regard to this issue of invasive exotic plants, the earlier the intervention, the better the chances of success.

WHY NOT FEED THE GULLS?In order to preserve the quality of bathing water on the beach, it is important not to feed the gulls. They can develop bad habits and lose fear of humans. By sharing the bathing area with you, they produce excrement in the water that contributes to water pollution by increasing the amount of phosphorus and fecal coliforms.

THE BLACK-LEGGED TICK ... AN INSECT?Did you know that ticks are not insects? These are mites that belong to the group of spiders, the “Arachnids”. They have a compact body with a cephalothorax and abdomen, as well as 4 pairs of legs.

To protect yourself from tick bites, the basic rule is to walk on the landscaped paths and avoid walking in tall grass, ferns and shrubby undergrowth.

WILDLIFE OBSERVATION IN THE PARKFields and clearings offer the possibility of admiring certain animals of the park in their natural habitat. Be on the lookout during your walking trips, you could meet great people. Here are 2 commonly observed representatives.

Master foxThe Red Fox is a small mammal of the order Carnivore, in the family Canidae, like the wolf and the coyote.

• His hearing, extremely sensitive, allows him to hear low frequencies up to 3.5 kHz and high frequencies up to 65 kHz (in humans, this faculty stops at 16 kHz);

• Its running speed can reach up to 50 km/h;

• In nature, its longevity rarely exceeds more than 10 years;

• Its average weight is 7 kg for an adult male;

• Each female can give birth to 4 to 5 pups per year;

• The tail of the red fox is generally 70% of its body size. It is used by the pendulum and keeps it warm when it sleeps and wraps it.

Groundhog or whistling?The groundhog, also known as the piper, is a small mammal belonging to the Rodent Rodent Order, which includes beaver, squirrels and mice, among others.

• It is one of the largest animals in Canada to actually hibernate (4 to 9 months);

• Easy to observe, the groundhog spends most of its time eating plants and heating up in the sun;

• Its size varies from 46 to 66 cm for a weight between 2 and 9 kg;

• In nature, its longevity is generally 4 years;

• Of the 13 species of marmot in the world, 4 are found in Canada and only one is present in Quebec;

• Each female can give birth to 2 to 9 pups per year.

10

OBSERVE THE BIRDS AT THE PARKWatching winged wildlife, or “avisme”, is a captivating pastime. Yamaska National Park is a favorite area to learn this activity. A multitude of species can be observed there, whether in the forest, in the fields or along the shores.

For new observers, five practical tips:

• Have good binoculars to distinguish the physiognomy of birds and the peculiarities of their plumage;

• Have a pocket guide illustrated with photos or precise drawings with descriptions of birds grouped by family, as well as the list of birds in the park available online at www.sepaq.com/dotAsset/27584.pdf;

• Taking photos makes it possible to study and validate the species observed later;

• Explore different types of natural environment with other observers.
