    January 2018

It was a snowy welcome for our students who returned to campus after a well-deserved holidaybreak. We begin the new year recharged and ready for a successful second semester. We hope yourchildren are excited and eager for the months ahead.

Happy new year and welcome back! As wonderful as the Decemberbreak is, we look forward to the return of our students - and theirboundless energy and enthusiasm - each January. This hilltop is fartoo quiet without them.

    From the Head of School...

  • This abbreviated edition of the Parents’ Press is designed to frame theweeks ahead as we all prepare for the second semester. Even as webrave snow drifts and chilly temperatures, we look forward to a monthof spirited student activities, college planning for our fifth formers, andfierce athletic competition, with fine/performing arts events sprinkledthroughout. The long, cold month of January will not slow us down!

With a new year and a new semester comes a fresh start, an opportunity/expectation of self-reflection and goal-setting. Last January, I asked parents to join me in “seeking self-awareness andresolve, and putting perfection on the shelf,” acknowledging that we are all working on something. Isecond that sentiment this year and add two thoughts for 2018.

First, the concept of choosing one word - as opposed to setting one, if not several, new year’sresolutions - stems from a variety of authors, books and websites. The fundamental idea is to selectone word that will frame, focus, motivate and/or set the tone for the year ahead. This can take placeon a personal, professional, individual or group level. I admit that I had difficulty choosing just one -so many potential areas for goals and growth! - but ultimately landed on one-ish: patient persistence. As an educator, parent, head of school, colleague, friend, etc., I want to center my year on beingpersistent (determined, hopeful, passionate) while acknowledging that persistence without patiencecan lead to a dead end.

Second, having earned a graduate degree in Public Health in 2001, and taught a senior elective inEpidemiology for many years prior to joining the Canterbury community, it’s time for me to dust offthat degree a little more often and see the world through a public health lens. My goal is to write atleast one blog each year focused on a public health topic . . . keep your eyes peeled!

Whether we choose one word, revisit past new year’s resolutions, set new goals, or simply remindourselves of the blessings - and challenges - of our lives, this frigid start to January asks us to maketime to do so. And I am more than happy to share patient persistence with you as well. Happy newyear!

    News from the Athletic Office

Updates on Athletic Requirements and Offerings for the 2018-19 School Year

The following updates for the 2018-19 School Year reflect our continual pursuit for ways to bestserve our student-athletes in alignment with Canterbury’s mission and values.

    1. Athletic Requirements (beginning in 2018-19)All students must compete in an interscholastic sport (or the equivalent) in two out ofthree seasons during the year with the option to do a third season or choose anafternoon activity. All students must participate in an athletic or afternoon activity in all three seasons. All Third and new Fourth Formers must participate on a team sport in the fall of theirfirst year at Canterbury.

Our goal is to continue to encourage both a broad and deep athletic experience for all of ourstudents, from novice to those who will compete in college.

    2. Athletic Offerings

    Announcements

  • Over the past several years, our Board of Trustees has requested a review of Canterbury’sathletic offerings. This analysis revealed that for a school with our enrollment, we currentlyoffer a disproportionate number of varsity teams which limits our ability to adequately fieldquality teams and remain competitive with peer schools. To that end, the 2018-19 school yearwill be the final year for Water Polo. In addition, the Spring of 2018 will be the final regularseason for Track (we will not compete in Field events); Track will be an option for a smallerand more select group of competitive runners in the spring of 2019.

These necessary changes are not only in line with the expectations of our peer schools but also insupport of Canterbury’s tradition of a strong and successful athletic program. We look forward to allthat lies ahead for Canterbury Athletics and welcome your follow-up questions. Go Saints!
