PARENT BULLETIN DECEMBER 2010 Elderslie High School Educating all students to achieve their personal best Page 1 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Staffing Update At the end of Term 3 a number of staff departed from our school. Firstly, Mrs Shanks and Mrs Ferris both started their maternity leave prior to the births of their babies. We wish both ladies the best in regards to what will be a very precious addition to their families. During this time Ms Nath will be the Relieving Head Teacher Science until the end of 2017; Ms Luu will be taking Mrs Shanks position in Maths until the end of this year; Ms Roberts will be the Relieving Year 10 Year Adviser; and Ms Piers will be taking up a temporary position in the Science faculty until the end of this year. Mr Kafataris also left the school at the end of Term 3 following his appointment to Fairfield High School. We wish him well at his new school. Acknowledging our Excellent Staff At the upcoming Department of Education Ultimo Operational Directorate Macarthur, Campbelltown, Wollondilly principal Network Awards, two of our teaching staff will be acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to public education and our students. Ms Cavaleri will receive an award in the executive teacher category recognising her excellent leadership and teaching, and Mr Douglas will receive a teacher award recognising his outstanding contribution to students and the school. Not only will these two fantastic individuals receive awards but Hannah Trethewy, Year 11, will co-compere the event and the school orchestra will provide pre-entertainment in the foyer area. Mrs Lawrence, Mrs Martin and I along with family members of the student performers and nominated staff will be attending the event. Japan Overseas Excursion On the 22 September 2016 I was privileged to attend the Japan 2016 excursion. Everyone who attended came back to Australia thoroughly exhausted having followed Mr Tan’s “intense” itinerary that took us from Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Tokyo. We experienced so much of Japan in a short period of time but it was totally worth it and what made it even better was the calibre of our students who attended. They were excellent ambassadors for their families and the school. If a similar opportunity is planned in the future I would highly recommend students attending as they gain so much from the experience new friendships, cultural understanding, budgeting and so much more. I am sure that Mr Tan will be writing more about the excursion as a part of this Bulletin. Public Speaking Congratulations to Georgia Cunnion (Year 9) who at the end of last term won the Phillip Garside Public Speaking Competition. This is the third consecutive year an Elderlsie student has won this award. On another note Cassandra McMurdo (Year 8) was successful in reaching the UN Youth NSW Voice Public Speaking Competition State Semi Finals. HSC Examinations Year 12 commenced the HSC examinations on 13 October 2016 and will conclude in early November. We wish them well and look forward to hearing about their achievements in the near future.

Parent TED Talk – “How to raise successful kids -- without over-parenting” If parents have 12 minutes to spare I would recommend watching the TED talk I have attached as a link (below). Julie Lythcott gives an insight into what she has seen as changes in parenting. She has some ideas and suggestions that all of us may consider.

From the Deputy Principals Jennifer Lawrence (DP Years 8, 10 & 12) Yearly Examinations As many students and parents would be aware, Term 4 is a time when assessment for the academic year is concluding and final reports are being collated by staff. The following summary gives an overview of when examination periods are taking place: Year 8 and 9 – Commencing Week 3 Year 7 - Commencing Week 4 Year 10 – Commencing Week 5 We encourage all students to engage in a thorough home study program in order to revise concepts in readiness for these exams. Your child’s class teacher or their faculty Head Teacher will also be a source of great advice about the details of units being assessed and the structure and duration of each exam. For Year 7, these will be the first formal school exams other NAPLAN and as such, can be very daunting. Preparation is therefore the key to success. For more information about the specific dates of individual subject examinations for your child, I encourage all parents to view the Examination Timetables available on the school website.

Year 10 into Year 11 Transition We are very much looking forward to guiding our current Year 10 students as they make the transition to the senior years of schooling. From Week 7 onward, all Year 10 students will be allocated a new timetable and placed in their Year 11 classes. While we do not commence Preliminary Course work until the start of 2017, staff will offer a taste of the subjects that students have chosen so that an accurate understanding can be developed of what is involved in each course. Another exciting element of the program is that Year 10 will be permitted to wear their senior uniforms. Senior uniforms will be available for purchase from our new on-site uniform shop here at Elderslie High School. At present, the anticipated date that this uniform shop will open is 15 November which is quite a short period of time before the transition program is due to commence. We acknowledge that this creates a significant rush for parents but due to restrictions with the supply of the uniform, this is unavoidable. We will inform all families via skoolbag app as soon as we receive confirmation of the opening date. In the interim, if there are any further problems, student may most certainly wear the junior uniforms until they are able to purchase the new senior uniform.

Year 12 At the time of writing, our Year 12 students were just about to commence the Higher School Certificate examinations for 2016. The final few weeks of school have been a jam packed period of time for students with a period of intense revision and holiday workshops being created for students as well as a number of social and

celebratory activities. Central to this were our Graduation Evening and Supper, which was held on Wednesday, 21 September and also our Picnic Day at the Mount Annan Botanical Gardens on Friday, 23 September. Both these occasions were wonderful events and were interspersed with a significant air of sentiment as the students completed the final components of 13 years of formal schooling. Following the HSC, we still look forward to the Year 12 Formal to be held on 17 November. It has been a very great pleasure to work with this group of students and their Year adviser, Mrs Julie Kelly. We wish them all the best for their futures.

eSafety Our parent community often seeks advice from the school regarding strategies for keeping students safe in this digital age and many parents feel their children have a greater degree of expertise than they do when it comes to using social media. A significant proportion of the student body uses social media in one of its many forms and whilst Facebook and Instagram are two of the most popular, there are a multitude of others constantly becoming available. The Office of the Children’s e-Safety Commissioner has developed these interesting and informative sites to help guide parents. The sites help parents to come up with appropriate control strategies and provide information about how best to support your child to use these platforms in a more appropriate manner. https://www.esafety.gov.au/esafety-information/games-apps-and-social-networking https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent

STUDY SKILLS - PREPARING FOR EXAMS Exams coming up this term?

Follow these steps to help you achieve your personal academic best:

1. Find out what you need to learn: ask your teacher if you will be tested on the whole year’s work or just the second half of the year. You may like to work through the PREPARING FOR EXAM BLOCKS unit to help you put together a study plan.

2. Make your study notes: work through the SUMMARISING unit to learn how to make brain- friendly study notes. On the THINGS TO PRINT page you will find a very useful Study Notes Checklist. You want to get your study notes finished as quickly as possible.

3. Learn your study notes: make sure you remember what you study by using the techniques in the ACTIVE STUDYING unit. If you are interested in exploring learning preferences, you can find more in this unit on this topic.

4. Practise the skills of the subject: do as many different questions, revision sheets, chapter reviews, sample essays or past examination papers as you can.

Page 4: PARENT BULLETIN...PARENT BULLETIN OCTOBER 2016 Elderslie High School Educating all students to achieve their personal best Page 3 From the Deputy Principals Jennifer Lawrence (DP Years

There are suggestions on how to make sure the practice you do is effective in the ACTIVE STUDYING unit.

5. Review your test-taking techniques: this ensures you make the most of the time in the exam. You can learn more about what to do the night before, the morning of the exam, how to approach multiple choice questions and essays in exams and much more in the TEST- TAKING unit.

6. And when you get your exam paper back make the most of it by using the strategies in the AFTER TESTS AND EXAMS unit.

Don’t leave your study until the last minute – get yourself organised well in advance. You can learn more about more effective studying at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au

Natalie Martin (DP Years 7.9 & 11) Year 11 Year 11 students are now considered to be in Year 12 and have commenced HSC courses in most of their subjects. Students will be issued with their reports after the recognition assembly which is on Friday 28

th October. All

parents are welcome to attend the assembly which will commence at 2.15pm.

Students will be issued with their assessment guidelines on Wednesday 19

October and the entire document will be

available on the school website by the end of Week 1 this term. I would like to remind parents that it is not recommended to book family holidays during the term as students can miss vital information about their assessments. The Department of Education will not approve leave during the term for family holidays. The school will not approve extensions for school work or assessments if students are absent due to family holidays. Students will need to complete all outstanding assessments before taking time off school to attend family holidays.

If students are unable to hand in or attend an assessment due to illness or misadventure they will be required to fill in an Illness/misadventure form and hand it in to the faculty Head Teacher on their first day of return to school. It is also advisable to contact the school to let the Head Teacher know why the student has been absent. Students may need to sit an alternative task to ensure equity of assessment practices across the year group. Some students have been issued with an application to revise their study pattern for 2017.

All students who hand in this form will be interviewed by an executive member before being approved to drop a subject. All students in Year 11 will be required to retain 12 Units until the end of Term 4.

Aboriginal Education During Term 3 our Year 7 Aboriginal students were involved in a literacy initiative where they participated in writing an additional Chapter of the Year 7 text ‘A view from the 32

nd Floor by Emma Cameron. The chapter they

wrote with the guidance of Mr Mani introduced an indigenous character and many cultural themes. This chapter and the associated activities have been made available for all staff through a Google Site. All of Year 7 will be reading and answering questions in relation to this chapter as part of their Yearly English Examination. Abby Lenard also drew a picture of an Eagle which represents a totem in the chapter, Thank you to Mr Mani and the students for participating in this activity.

On 5 September four Year 7 Aboriginal students visited Cobbitty Public School to meet with their Aboriginal primary school students. Abby Lenard and Briannan Eggert performed their speeches that they had delivered earlier in the Year at Parliament House. They also shared their experiences with writing the additional chapter of the book which is mentioned above. The purpose of the visit was to enhance community engagement and build positive relationships and links with future students.

From the Office Attention: Parent/Guardian Regarding Text Messaging: When a student is absent a text message is generated, if you have more than one student absent on the same day you will receive a separate message for each student. You need to respond to all the text messages that you have received. Lately a lot of parents have been replying to only one message for eg. Jack and Jill are sick today. This one response will save into only 1 of the students files and then the other student’s absence reply will remain unexplained. If no written reply is received within 7 days an absence letter will be generated. Please note the text message you reply to is at no cost to yourself.

School Attendance Information Elderslie High School has recently participated in a state wide school attendance program. This involved a team of Home School Liaison Officers visiting to work with Executive Staff and Year Advisers in interviewing students with identified concerns in their attendance at school. Home School Liaison Officers are specially trained attendance teachers with the Department of Education. Concerns with attendance included-

Having an attendance rate under 85%

Unexplained or unjustified absences from school

Regular lateness or part day absences

Extended and ongoing periods of illness Nearly 100 students were interviewed on the day and the purpose of these interviews was to raise awareness of these concerns and to support improvement in their attendance. This can make real differences to engagement in learning, learning outcomes and their connection with school. Many students showed surprise at the extent of their absence from school and made commitments to improve A letter detailing this process and a copy of their child’s attendance record was sent to parents/caregivers after the interviews and most feedback to date from this has been positive. Concerns that were noted during the interviews included the following

Regular/lengthy absences due to illness- please note that medical certificates are required for these.

Travel – families are encouraged to travel during school holidays - if travel during school term is necessary, please inform school. Absences when approved will be marked as LEAVE on the roll and contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

SMS Text messages are sent to parents of all absent students each day. The purpose of this communication is to inform of the absence and to seek an explanation for the absence, which schools by law are required to do. An unexplained absence is when no explanation is given following an SMS or letter. An unjustified absence is an absence that may have been explained but the school is unable to justify it as a valid reason for the absence. An example of an unjustified absence would be a student having a day off for their birthday.

The partnership between home and school is ultimately a most important one. Please call the school if you are having problems in getting your child to school. School refusal is a growing concern across many schools and there are strategies that can be put in place that can support positive change. Many thanks again for your support. Tom Pastor, Home School Liaison Officer, Elderslie High School

ThinkUKnow Presentation – Cyber Safety, Privacy and Security Online

In response to recent events in the media with our school being allegedly named as a school involved with an inappropriate social media forum / website, our school has been invited to host a ThinkUKnow presentation. This presentation will take place on Tuesday 25/10/16 at 6:00pm in the Drama Studio and all parents, carers and teachers are encouraged to attend.

‘Get Up, Stand Up’ Elderslie High School has been participating in a 16 week program called ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ for young males through Camden Community Connections. The program targets boys between the ages of 12 and 16 years who are either disengaged or at risk of disengaging from their school or community. The program has been delivered by qualified community, family and youth workers and has been a great success with very positive feedback from participants and their families.

This is the first program of its kind in the area and we are pleased that our students have been given the opportunity to participate and are grateful for the potential benefits it has offered them. Of key interest is the program’s focus on identifying strengths, increasing self-esteem and confidence, building positive relationships, achieving goals and making positive life choices, and encouragement to actively participate in the community in positive ways.

This year the program required the boys to organise a fundraising event as part of their volunteering experience. An afternoon in the park has been organised by the students, details of this event are below. Mr B. Townsend, Head Teacher Welfare

Heartbeat: Many Channels On the 14 of September, I had the pleasure to travel with 5 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to the University of Western Sydney Campbelltown Campus to attend Heartbeat: Many Channels. The program was organised by Ellen Karimanovic who is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Project Officer for the University, mainly focusing on student engagement, participation and success. Dylan Bell, Ethan Gardner, Kieran Sinclair and Abby Lenard of Year 7 and Jody Stevenson of Year 8 attended on the day and participated in a series of activities and presentations by students, health professionals and those from the public sector including ambulance and first aid. The students were able to walk around the campus and experience aspects of university life and culture. The university was extremely accommodating to our students and most of all, the students were very happy to be surrounded by other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from other schools in the Sydney South-west region. Overall, the day was a huge success, and the students once again served Elderslie High School in a respectful and responsible manner. Miss Sakr (Aboriginal Education Committee)

Macarthur’s Vietnam Veterans gather to honour fallen mates on the 50

th year anniversary.

On Thursday the 18 of August, Hannah Trethewy, Deni

Hoxha, Andrew Gardner and Lillian Ralston (Year 11) represented Elderslie High School at Mawson Park in Campelltown to remember the soldiers who had fought bravely during the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. People of all ages, including war veterans, student representatives and local parliamentary members attended the ceremony to pay their respects to those men who lost their lives.

Classified as one of the ”most dramatic battles” it signified Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, of the bravery and heroism at which, is forever remembered. It began after a company of 108 men were ambushed at the Long Tan rubber plantation and saw 18 Australian soldiers killed and 24 wounded. Our soldiers fought a losing battle against the brutal force of the 1500-2500 Viet Cong. The Battle has come to symbolize the Vietnam War and the spirit that is carried by the ANZACs.

From the time of the arrival of the first Australian soldiers in 1962, almost 60,000 Australians, including ground troops and air force and navy personnel, served in Vietnam. 52 Australian solders died as a result of the war, with over 3,000 wounded. The war ended with the fall of Saigon on 30

April 1975.

Those Australians who lost their lives were remembered at the ceremony. Small white crosses with plaques represented the dead, some as young as 16. The dozens of wreaths donated left a spectacular image of the ANZAC spirit. Men, such as the president of the Vietnam Veterans Association Macarthur, Ray James spoke of the terrors he faced amongst the war fields at the age of 16. His graphic recount left a cloud of silence amongst the crowd.

Deni and Andrew placed our school donation of an endorsed book, which will be presented to local school as a permanent tribute in the near future. Hannah and Lillian represented the Camden Area, laying a wreath in respect around the statue. Following the service, we joined the veterans and members of the public at the RSL Club for some light refreshments.

Chaplain at Elderslie High School Rachael Gavarotto started at Elderslie High School last term as our Chaplain; she is at our school each Monday. Her role is to work alongside the wellbeing team to facilitate the wellbeing of our students and their families. Rachael is a caring and approachable presence in the school, providing a listening ear and a source of comfort and referral for those in a difficult time or in need of a friend. Rachael meets with students and other members of the school community to provide support and guidance regarding relationships, wellbeing, choices, and values. Students who see Rachael in her chaplain role only do so with written permission from a parent or guardian. More information about school chaplains can be found at the Generate Ministries website http://mychaplain.org.au/ Resilience is the process of continual development of

personal competence, while navigating & negotiating with available resources, in the face of adversity. Last month Rachael became an accredited trainer in The Resilience Doughnut, which is a practical, strengths based model for developing resilience in children, young people and adults. It identifies and combines strengths needed to thrive in a modern world. Developed at the Resilience Centre Australia, the model is based on a wide body of international research examining the factors common to children, young people and adults who have shown resilience in the face of adversity. Now a validated measure, the Resilience Doughnut has had considerable success across Australia, and now spreading across Japan, South Africa, Canada and is now making an impact across the UK. As an accredited trainer, Rachael can apply the Resilience Doughnut during one on one conversations and small group training with students. The training is most effective when teachers, parent/carers and community are also trained in the Resilience Doughnut.

All students and their families interested in meeting with Rachael as Chaplain are able to make an appointment during the school term. To find out more or to make a referral please contact Rachael on the school number (02 4658 1110), email [email protected] or

in person.

SUPPORT UNIT NEWS Science Fair Last term our students studied the Science of Classification, researching and designing a dichotomous key to represent a chosen topic. They presented their research at our Science Fair on 22 September which was attended by key EHS executives, science faculty staff, and senior science students. The fair was an amazing opportunity to showcase our students’ talents and hard work. The winners of the fair, Joel Panetta, who presented his key on marine organisms and Bodhi Nathaniel, who studied dinosaurs, should be congratulated on their fantastic efforts.

2017 Transition Program In 2017 we will welcome 11 new Year 7 students into the Support Unit. We have been getting to know our new students and their families at recent transition events and have a series of orientation visits planned for Term 4 to support our students in getting to know their new school, the staff and their peers. In weeks 2, 3 and 4, our new students will be visiting EHS to participate in a range of taster lessons including Science, Agriculture, HSIE, Food Technology, Visual Arts and Drama to showcase just some of the exciting opportunities our school has to offer.

Year 11 students who have registered for the Western Sydney University day will be attending with me on Wednesday 26 October. This is a great opportunity for our students to have a “taste” of university life.

I am waiting to confirm a number of motivational guest speakers to come and speak to our students throughout this term. The girls from the ENID Careers network will be visiting again on Tuesday October 25 to speak to our Year 11 girls. Migas will be coming in on Tuesday November 29

to speak to potential leavers about various apprenticeships and traineeships.

Work Experience opportunities continue for our Year 10 students. However, please note that Year 10 students will be sitting their examinations in Weeks 5 and 6 of this term and the best times for Work Experience will be after these exams. Please remember that if I don’t have the final, completed paperwork then Work Experience cannot happen. All forms must be filled in the order they are set out, signed and completed and returned to me for copying at least one week prior to the intended Work Experience week. Thank you for your cooperation in this.

Please take a look at our new careers website – www.eldersliehighcareers.com and encourage your child to register with the website to learn more about post school opportunities and to receive email alerts pertaining to their areas of interest. Agriculture News What an exciting couple of months we’ve had since the last Parent Bulletin!

Penrith Show Success Students had spent many months preparing for Penrith Show which was held on the last weekend in August.

This is a major event on the High School Agriculture calendar with 18 schools, both public and private, competing. Each school prepares a large display representing an agricultural enterprise. This year we chose Gourmet Mushroom Production. Students showed the entire production from collecting the spores and growing them on agar plates, increasing the culture on grain and then in the bulk substrate and then finally producing the beautiful oyster and shiitake mushrooms which eventually reach the consumer. The growth of the mushrooms for the display began up to 3 months prior to the show with students demonstrating excellent skills in microbiology as they produced the sterile cultures. They managed to time the fruiting perfectly so we had yellow, pink and white oyster mushrooms as well as as some beautiful shiitakes. The display incorporated a time lapse video of the growth of our mushrooms, viewing of luminous mushrooms and interactive activities for the young children. Although most of the components had already been made a school, students spent about 15 hours constructing the display at the showground. On the first day of the show, Olivia De La Mare and Hannah Jenkins were interviewed by a team of 4 judges about our display. We were very excited to be awarded 1

st place for our display.

At the same time that this judging was taking place, 5 of our livestock were being judged. Our donkey, goat, prison calf and poultry were all awarded ribbons in their classes. Theveen Chinathumby, Nancy Haggerty, Alice Haggerty, and Tia Keighran all participated in livestock parading classes and were all awarded ribbons.

On the Sunday, a team of 4 of our students, Theveen Chinnathumby, Nancy Haggerty, Matthew Guthrie and Luke Amjah competed in the Rural Olympics. They demonstrated their skills in a range of tasks including electric fencing, conventional fencing, loading hay on a trailer, sheep handling and chemical spraying. Other students participated in Poultry Judging. Liam Callaghan and Alice Haggerty came 1st in the Team judging.

Congratulations to all of the students involved the preparations for Penrith Show and in particular to the students who attended on the weekend: Liam Callaghan, Theveen Chinathumby, Olivia De La Mare, Hannah Jenkins, Luke Amjah, Matthew Guthrie, Nancy Haggerty, Corrina Dickson, Tia Keighran and Lucy Mottram.

Animal Nurseries Our Animal Nurseries continue to be very popular at Cobbitty Markets. We also provided a nursery for Camden Festival’s Kids Fun Day at Curry Reserve. Thanks to all of the students who have helped with these events and continue to promote our school in a very positive light in our local community.

ABC Wildlife Spotting Some year 7 classes helped save threatened species and contributed towards preserving Australia’s iconic wildlife. Students become one of the 48 000 online citizen scientists and assisted researchers by looking for animals in the 1 000 000 wilderness photos taken by automated camera from all around Australia. Students had to identify whether animals were present in photos taken from the Tasmanian wilderness, Far north Queensland, South-central Victoria, Northern Territory arid zone, NSW Coastal and Mallee forest areas. The research will help answer questions including: how many endangered bettongs are left; how well native predators like quolls and devils are competing with cats for food; and how common are common wombats. More info at https://wildlifespotter.net.au.

Education Perfect Science Championships Students from 10 Science C and 9 Science I all participated in week 6 in the Education Perfect Science Championships. Two thousand seven hundred and forty six Science questions were answered by students who battled against others around the world. Overall 12 million questions were asked in the championships. Marialee Truong earnt a Credit Award, which placed her in the top 20% of 50 000 competitors around the world. Well done Marialee!

NSW ALL SCHOOLS PAPER PLANE CHALLENGE

A popular event during Science week was the paper plane challenge. On Thursday 18 August, 39 students entered their freshly constructed plane from a single A4 sheet of paper at school level. Two categories of 18 metres distance and 6 seconds of time aloft where the minimum requirements students had to fly before advancing to the next level. The following students were eligible to enter the Sydney Finals Competition, held at the Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Distance and Time Flight Results: Yr 7 -Joshua O’Flynn 23.1 m Yr 7- Lachlan Hammond 24.3m Yr 8-Corey Nunn 22.5m and 6 Yr 8- Caleb Jones 19.5m and 6sec Yr 9- Ethan Keighran 18m Yr 10- Tim Hannaford 18.05m Yr 10 -James Maxwell 20.8 m

From the above Joshua O'Flynn and Lachlan Hammond recount their experience:

On the 20th of August, I entered the NSW All Schools Paper Plane Challenge. On the day it was in the Sydney University Aquatic & Leisure Centre’s grand basketball court. There was a big crowd of people competing at the competition for the glory of being crowned the Paper Plane Champion. I entered in the Years 7-12 Distance Qualifiers Round. Unfortunately, I missed getting into the top 10 finals. The distance that was recorded was my first throw and it went 19.3 metres. Going to the Paper Plane Challenge was so much fun. I hope next year I can go again to redeem myself once more. Joshua O’Flynn Yr 7

At the paper plane competition I went into the distance throwing category. I threw 22 metres and I qualified to go into the next round. I came 7

th in NSW but unfortunately

they only take the top 6 throwers through to the next round. So I just missed out. After that I went into the time aloft competition. I came 1

st in the qualifying round with

my plane. It was a model called the spy plane. It flew in the air for 12 seconds and I qualified to enter the next round. When it was my turn, I threw my plane and it got stuck on the lights! So it didn’t count but luckily I could make another plane. However, I only got 6.7 seconds with my 2

nd model and I came 4

th in NSW for the time aloft

category. Overall, I was happy because there were around 50 to 60 people in my age group and I ranked 4

th out of all

of them. Lachlan Hammond Yr 7

Yr 7 - Cell Model Construction An amazing array of plant, animal, monera, protists and prokaryotic cells where submitted for the recent third assessment in Science. Here are some pictures of student's work.

Yr 7 & 8 IntoScience Homework Term 3 & 4 homework requires a subscription to the online IntoScience program. There are a number of students who are still yet to pay and receive their username and password. Please have your child check with their teacher and please finalise your payment of $24 for year 7 or $12 for year 8 if it is still outstanding.

It is best to use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your web browser and have Unity Player installed before the program will run smoothly. It is highly recommended that the free IntoScience app be downloaded via the Apple I-Tunes store if students have an I-Pad. If access to the internet is an issue then the school's library can be used during break times or on Wednesdays from 2.30 to

3.25pm. Homework is worth 10% of your students overall grade and reinforces concepts learnt in class. Using IntoScience will help revise content for the Yearly Examination which is held early next term.

If there are any concerns please contact the Acting Head of Science, Mrs Nath who is relieving Mrs Ferris whilst she is on maternity leave. Congratulations Mrs Ferris who had a baby boy during term 3 holidays!

History News Yr 9 History Excursion Sydney University On 22 July the Year 9 History Elective class including myself and Mr Raeburn went on an excursion to the Nicholson Museum in Sydney University. We started off by splitting into two equal groups, then once we did that one group went downstairs to look up close with real artefacts and the other group stayed upstairs to walk around the museum. In the museum there was all sorts of real ancient artefacts including Greek pots and bowls, ancient Greek statues and grace stones. There were also models of things such as the town of Pompeii and a model of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. This was a really interesting museum which had a mummified body, a mummified head, a brain, cow head, mummified snakes and little animals and also mummified cats. When we were in the room under the museum we got to handle and look at so many real and used artefacts. We held canopic jars which once had human organs inside, spear heads, pottery and mirrors. Overall, the excursion was great and everyone learnt something new whether it was about Greek mythology or the life of Pompeiians and much more. Thank you Mr Raeburn for organising such an interesting day for the class of Year 9 Elective History. Sofie Boyce - Yr 9

LANGUAGE NEWS The 2

nd Biennial Overseas Trip to Japan

On Thursday 22 September, a group of 20 students from Elderslie HS, Camden HS, Hoxton Park HS, Casula HS and Ingleburn HS embarked on a 2 week overseas cultural tour of Japan. The trip was organised to support the learning done in a number of subjects, but also broaden students’ understanding of foreign cultures and societies.

The first leg of the journey was centred around Osaka. As a well-known destination of traditional and modern cuisine, we were able to stroll around the Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori areas of the city, sampling local delicacies and immerse ourselves in the nightlife. Still jetlagged the group were able to visit Universal Studios Japan, especially to see the Harry Potter themed rides and attractions.

The second part of the journey took us to Hiroshima. The students were able to learn more about the history of the city including the aftermath and effects of the atomic bomb. The visit to the Hiroshima Peace Park and Memorial Museum was an invaluable activity to experience.

The third leg of the journey allowed us to visit the traditional aspects of the country with our 4-day stay in Kyoto. Apart from the various temple and shrine visits, and a tour of Himeji and Nijo Castles, the most exciting thing to experience was the gold leaf ice cream – a must if you visit Kinkakuji Temple. Day trips around the old capital enabled the group to visit the Iwatayama Monkey Park and the Bamboo Groves, Nara and its Todaiji Temple and much more.

The last part of the trip centred around Tokyo. With our remaining funds, we were fortunate to enjoy a day at Tokyo Disneyland, anime/manga district of Akihabara,

shopping in Shibuya and a last minute tour up Tokyo Tower.

Despite being an exhausting 2-week cultural tour, every participant thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the trip. A big thank you to the accompanying staff who gave up their holidays to supervise the students: Mrs Fawcett, Ms Martin, Ms Dokmanovic, Mrs Walker and Ms Wang from Hoxton Park. Future overseas excursions will be organised biennially with the next one tentatively set in the July 2018 holidays. Mr Tan, Japanese Teacher

Year 12 Textiles and Design The Year 12 Textiles Projects have been packed up and sent away for another year. The students have worked tirelessly over the past three terms to design, document and create their projects. As a whole the projects were creative, unique and executed to a high standard. The students have been highly motivated and dedicated, spending much of their free time in the textiles rooms. This class of young ladies has been a pleasure to teach and I am very proud of the way they have handled themselves when the pressure was on. Congratulations girls, you should all be delighted with what you have achieved. I would like to warmly welcome parents and students to view the talented Elderslie High School students Major Textiles Projects in the school Library. The Items will be displayed in week 2 and 3 of Term 4. Ms Golden

Year 10 Textiles Technology During Term Two and Three, students in Year 10 Textiles Technology challenged themselves with the design and construction of an individualised fancy dress costume. This was a challenging yet rewarding task for the students as they were required to use a commercial pattern, interpret the instructions and independently construct their garment. This project allowed students of varying abilities to showcase their talents in design and the use of a sewing machine. Below are some images of the exceptional projects made by the Year 10 students.

YEAR 8 CHILD STUDIES. Year 8 Child Studies students went on a journey to investigate their own family heritage. The students developed an understanding of the importance genealogy has on the development of a child. Each student traced their own family heritage, designing, constructing and decorating their own personal family tree.

Year 9 Textiles Technology Year 9 students have been working hard all year to create a series of well finished and unique textiles items. Students produced a Drawstring carry bag with a creative crazy patch work image on the front. Students embroidered their names onto the bags which have come in handy all year for carrying around their materials and equipment. Once students mastered the bag the two classes moved onto a Tie Dye PJ set with complementary embellishments. Students are currently working on a patchwork toy to demonstrate all the new embellishments they have learnt. Students have developed a keen eye for design and colouration.

Open Girls Netball Once again Elderslie High School has excelled in the Open Girls netball competition. The team made up of Year 9, 10 and 11 students easily progressed to the second day at Endeavour netball courts. The second day at the South Western Sydney competition proved to be a little more challenging with a tight game against Macquarie Fields High School. The girls lifted and played well to overcome MFHS and win their place in the CHS 16 for the 3rd year in a row. The girls had a very difficult day playing 3 of the 4 sports high schools. Each and every player is to be commended on their good sportsmanship and motivation playing every game to the end no matter the score. After two days of fast and skilled netball, the team placed seventh in the state which is an excellent result. I would also like to thank the parents for their commitment and support throughout the four days. I hope to see you all again next year. Ms Golden.

ATHLETICS Ella Wooldridge came 1

st in the Under 17’s (she is 14) 2k

RUGBY LEAGUE On Wednesday 17

August, Elderslie High Schools under

13’s rugby league team competed in the West League’s Cup grand final, coming away with a convincing win against Moss Vale High School. These boys had the opportunity to play at Campbelltown stadium and were pumped in doing so. At the age of 13 these boys had the privilege to feel what it is like to get changed, warm up and prepare for a

game like a professional football player. It was good to see the team of 18 all work together and put in their best to display such a high standard of Rugby league. All credit to the team for their dedication and commitment at training and putting in the extra yards which all paid off. Congratulations boys. Trainers: Ryan Carruthers (Super Coach), Zachary Costlow and Keegan Jones

The under 15’s also qualified for the West Leagues Cup grand final. This team was made up of a range of ages from Year 8-10. Although the rugby league side were beaten by Busby High School, our team displayed tenacity, sportsmanship and determination to finish the game regardless of the score.

All players should be commended on their positive behaviour while in the public arena, their determination and their positive attitudes throughout the season. Looking forward to next season, Ms Jeffries

YEAR 9 PASS CAMP Year 9 PASS Camp was fun. We did various activities such as the flying fox, rock climbing, giant swing, high ropes, abseiling, orienteering, water slide and challenge valley. It was a good experience to learn how to survive in the wild and build our friendships with our peers. We also got to prepare and cook our own meals as well as putting up our own tent. Orienteering was a good team building experience, helping us connect with our class mates finding check points in the bush. The high rope was a trust building activity as you had to trust your partner and the ropes to keep you safe. Overall the Year 9 pass camp was an enjoyable experience. Casey, Zarko and Jacob
