The night was well attended by approximately 80 parents and commenced with a glimpse of what the future may look like for our children in their living and working lives. In addition, he emphasised the importance of preparing our students for a world that is rapidly changing and ensuring they acquire the skills and dispositions to be life-long learners. The evening also provided parents with the opportunity to share feedback on the strengths, and areas requiring strengthening at Brighton Primary School. Parents provided feedback on note cards in response to the following two key questions: 1. What makes BPS a good school? 2. What would make BPS an even better school? It was overwhelmingly evident from the feedback that BPS families feel included and highly value being part of a

caring, active and supportive parent community. Parents also recognise the passion and dedicated work ethic of

our teaching staff and the need to support their professional learning and development to enable them to provide

engaging and challenging learning experiences for our students.

This session was a timely opportunity for our parent community to assist in the redevelopment of our school

strategic plan ending this December. We will continue working closely with students, teachers, other staff and

parents, as well as external accreditation organisations, Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Department

of Education and Training (DET), to help us identify our current strengths as well as the areas requiring

strengthening. We will use this community feedback while also drawing on evidence based research to develop our

new BPS School Strategic Plan 2020-23.

We will need to select priorities, as it is not possible to deeply implement all suggested changes at once, keeping in

mind that our number one focus is to maximise learning for all students at Brighton Primary School.

The Specialist Spectacular is fast approaching and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 18th September

between 5 – 7pm. Grade 3, 4 and 5 students, along with their specialist teachers, have put together a fun evening

full of entertainment for everyone. Enjoy the show and partake in some delicious food van options for dinner. All

food suppliers are members of our BPS school community.

in 2020?

Please let us know of your intention to return to BPS in 2020 via your Compass Insights tab.

1. Log into Compass (open in browser via your phone app)

2. Click on the ‘Profile’ link next to your child’s photo

3. Click the ‘Insights’ tab and select the ‘Insights Cycle—Is your child returning to BPS in 2020?’

Supplying this information is extremely important and assists in planning for 2020 year level

classes and teaching staff.

Compass Handy Tip

1. “My child is going on an excursion today but I can’t

remember what they needed to take?”

2. “My child is at the athletics carnival today and I would like to go

and support the event. Where is the carnival being held?

The quickest way to access the details of an excursion is:

• On your mobile device click on the Compass menu and select Events

• This will display all Compass events you have previously consented to

• By selecting the ‘Attending’ hyperlink (in green text) a display of the details relating

to the event will appear. i.e. date, venue, dress code and any additional information

Alternatively, you can access the above information by checking the parent calendar.

This view works best when logged in from a desktop or laptop.

• By clicking entries listed in green you will be taken directly to the event consent notice

which contains all the relevant information.

Education Committee

One of the four sub-committees of the Brighton Primary School Council is the Education

Committee. This committee is comprised of council members, parents and teachers.

The Education committee meet regularly throughout the year to review and update a range

of school policies. This work is guided and informed by current Department of Education and

Training policy and community input. Schools are required to have certain policies in place

and then have the option to have other local policies based on their context.

BPS has a policy review schedule which ensures that all policies are reviewed on the required

cycle. Some policies are reviewed annually, for example, the Asthma and Anaphylaxis

policy. Other polices are on 3-4 year review cycles.

The process for reviewing a policy includes:

• Education Committee meetings where members review the policies

• Consultation with key stakeholders/experts in the school, e.g. School Nurse, Business

Manager etc. as necessary

• Sending policy to School Council to be ratified

Publication of newly reviewed or ratified policies in the School Newsletter, Website and

Compass

I draw your attention to the Student Engagement Policy in this week’s newsletter. This policy

contains useful and important information in regards to student wellbeing. It includes what

BPS has in place to teach positive behaviours and wellbeing, our outlined response to

incidents that occur within the school and the definition of bullying. It is important to have a

common understanding around these items to best support our students.

Congratulations to the Footy Dads on their recent Community Cup win against Brighton Beach PS. It was a great afternoon which raised close to $18,000 for BPS. An incredible effort. Well done dads!

The first BRIGHTON LIVE went off with a bang. It was such a successful night, we’re not changing the formula… Tickets are $20 on Qkr! or $30 on the door. Pizza can be pre-ordered on Qkr! SPRING SPORTS CARNIVAL – Friday 8 November Come November, we’ll hold our inaugural FREE Spring Sports Carnival to celebrate our children’s health, fitness and sporting prowess. There’ll be sporting challenges, including footy, soccer and a ninja obstacle course as well as a few other fun activities for the kids. The sports will be book-ended by a cake stall for afternoon tea, and a sausage sizzle. If you’d like to help, there will be opportunities to volunteer on the day, donate sporting prizes for the raffle, and sponsor the carnival. Grade 5B are on Twitter, making connections!

This term, Grade 5B have created a Twitter account to share our learning and make

connections around the world. Our profile is created under the teacher’s name and used as a

whole class. We have ensured that when we Tweet we do not include any personal

information, such as our names or school. We have been Tweeting about all the learning we do

in class and school happenings such as the athletics carnival and merry mottos.

Recently we Tweeted about creating rhyming picture story books for our buddies and thanked

some authors for inspiring us with their books. We were lucky that our Tweet was seen by Matt

Cosgrove, the author of Macca the Alpaca and he replied! We then responded with a poem

to thank him for the inspiration and his Tweet, which he then re-Tweeted for all his followers to

see! We have also been Tweeting with a school in Adelaide, another in Mumbai and another

in Canada. We really enjoy Tweeting and seeing who we get replies from and making

connections with other children all over the world.

Grade 2 have been inquiring into using water responsibly during our ‘Sharing the Plant unit. The students have

shown great enthusiasm towards this unit and have demonstrated many attributes of the learner profile, such as

caring and principled.

Some Grade 2 students decided to take action by starting a ‘Water Saving Club’ to educate our community on

how to care for water.

They used the skills and knowledge they have learnt to write procedural texts on how to use the school compost

and bins, persuasive texts convincing students not to litter and tips on how we can all save water. Here are some

student examples:

People must stop littering!

You should not litter because it goes into the drains and kills sea animals and

we see them covered in rubbish. We should take the rubbish off the animals.

Then we need to take them to the animal hospital.

Secondly, animals need clean water to survive. Even we need clean water to

survive.

You shouldn't litter because the rubbish you drop goes in to the drains

and then in to ocean and can kill animals.

Secondly, if you litter it just makes more rubbish in the world and can

GREEN TEAM ASSEMBLY ADDRESS:

Good morning Brighton Primary,

We are from the green team. First I would like to ask a couple of questions.

Hands up if you have seen rubbish in our school?

Hands up if you think we need to do something to reduce rubbish in the school?

Well this morning we are going to be showing you how to improve the rubbish at school by using

our new and improved bins.

Well if you have not already seen these lids on these bins here they are.

This is how you use them (demonstrate).

1. Put the rubbish right through the black section of the bin/ the slot.

2. Wash you hands.

If the rubbish is to big to fit through the black section/ the slot, lift the lid, put it in, but make sure

you close the lid again.

This is how you do not use them (demonstrate).

1. Do not just place the rubbish on top. You have to push it in!

The school has paid for these bins so that the wind and crows will not be able to get the rubbish

out of the bins. It is up to us to be principled and caring by using the bins properly and make our

school a better place. Please do your bit. Thank you!
