March 7, 2011 Unit 5 goods and services impacts people’s lives from the point of view of employment.  We have planned a field trip to Emporium Shopping Complex to see what goods and services are available and what they provide. The students will then link these products and services to people’s needs and wants. We need your expertise! We would like to hear about your experiences in the busi- ness world! We will be asking for volunteer presenters who would share their business ideas with the kids, explaining how to target consumers with your product or service and how to provide people with what they want. The presenta- tion will not need to be longer than 15minutes. We will out- line the focus in a future email and blog posting. Dear Parents, We are starting our new unit under the transdisciplinary theme of ‘How We Organize Ourselves’. The central idea for the unit is: “The exchange of goods and services affects peoples lives.” Within this unit the students will learn about the provision and exchange of goods and services. We will explore the roles of consumers and providers and will explore how availability of certain goods and services impacts people’s lives. We will be accessing the unit through the concepts of: Function - Students will be find- ing out how the exchange of goods and services functions, the kinds of systems that are in place for economic activities and will learn about the roles of consum- ers and providers. Connection   We will look into people’s needs and wants and how they are connected to the provision of goods and services. We will also connect availability and employment to people’s needs and wants. In addition, we will explore the concept of communication and how it is essential in the exchange of goods and services. The con- cept of systems will be consid- ered through money. We will also look into how the exchange of LANGUAGE FOCUS Writing: Exposing students to persuasive writing Reading: Determining Important Ideas in non-fiction Viewing and Presenting Word Study Transdisciplinary MATHEMATICS We will learn about monetary systems and review money for addition, subtraction and use money fwith multiplication in Mathematics activities.
