Good R ea ders…

? Think and ask, “Does that make sense?”Students are better able to decode

tricky words and self- correct when they think about the story as they read.

If your c

h

ild read, “The boy fell also on his pillow,” you co uld say, “Does that make

sense? Do youf all a ls o  on your pillow?” No, you falla s le e p  on your pillow.

Point to the words as they are reading. One to one correspondence helps

reinforce the print to voice connection. When youread to your child, model

this and your child will also practice this reading behavior. Pointing to the

words also helps themfind word parts which is another reading strategy.

c a tFindwordparts. If they are struggling with the wordd o gh o us e  you ca n say, “I s

there a small word in there that you know?” Yo u might see your child cover

uph o us e  in the word and say, “dog!!” We also talk ab out word chunks or wordfamilies. In a word such as b um p , direct their focus on the  – ump chunk.

Look at the pictures. If your child comes to the wordg ir a f f e , it’s very likely

there is a picture of a giraffe on the page.

Go back andreread. After using any of the strategies to f igure out tricky

word always have your child go back and reread the sentence.

Readfluently andwith expression.Successful readers read smoothly like they

talk. Reading with expression makes the story more exciting and enjoyable.Modeling this when youread to your child will reinforce this strategy.

If your child is still unable to f igure out the tricky word using these reading strategies, tell themthe

problemword and have themgo through the strategies again to reread the word successf ully.
