I was delighted to return from long service leave in the middle of this term to study in depth the academic achievements of our students at the end of first semester.

A significant increase in the number of students gaining a ‘B or Better’ rating across all subjects had occurred.

Specifically, 169 students met this standard, an increase of 43% from our Mid Semester 1 results. Also, the number of our students achieving a ‘Straight A’ rating increased by 60%.

These results are encouraging to me, to our staff, to our P&C Association, and to those students who demonstrated this improvement.

On Sunday the 26th of August, 3 teams competed in the 30th year of the Optiminds challenge at the University of Queensland, Gatton. The teams, consisting of students from grades 7-11, entered in the literacy and social science categories.

They had the task of answering their respective criteria/ question through a performance.

The students in the literacy category had to put a twist on the well-known Matilda story, while the social science folks had to decide 3 major mile-stones to celebrate for the 30th anniversary of the fictional Topi Topi Tribe.

On the 26th of August, the H.S.H.S. Shakespeare Ensemble, the Bard Stars, participated in the 2018 Qld Youth Shake Fest. They competed against other schools in the categories of film and cos-tume. Rahila Abdul Hadi won the regional final costume design cat-egory and Kirra Thompson's cos-tume designs qualified as a wild-card entry. Milrus Caguimbal's film qualified as a wildcard entry too. This is the first time that all Bard Star entries have successfully qualified for the state finals that will be held at The Judith Wright Centre of Contempo-rary Arts next term. Congratulations Bard Stars!

On Monday 27th August, Mr Albrand, Mr O’Neil, Ms Baker and I set off with 58 students for a 2-day/1 night camp at YMCA Leslie Dam. Everyone had a fantastic time, and some students even got some sleep at night. Here are two accounts by students:

“At Year 8 camp this year we went to Leslie Dam and learned a lot of things. We learnt how to build a fire and make damper in Bush Skills or that you really can get to the top of the rock-climbing wall, even if it seems a bit daunting at first, if you try hard enough. But with every activity, we re-learnt something: we

relearnt teamwork, initiative, trust, resilience determination and we learnt about each other. In the beginning, people were disagreeing and arguing about every-thing, but each activity proved that we needed to work together in order for it to work. By the end of camp, we were all cooperating and working well as a team, and came back home with at least one new friend.” - Rachael Burns and Jordan Jarick.

“The Year 8 camp was an amazing expe-rience for me because I learned how to make a fire and food. I managed to pass my limits of heights in the rock climbing and in the high ropes. The scariest and funniest moment was the camp fire sto-ries of the little girl in the white dress but the night activities were a memorable moment because I made new friends while doing the activities such as ‘pulse and false pulse’ game. I really enjoyed camp.”

The Year 10 AAG Basketball Plate competition was won by our Junior Boys team (pictured), coached by Mr McDon-ald, while the Senior Boys when through the qualifying rounds of the CBSQ competition to make the finals of the event. This CBSQ Basketball Challenge Finals will take place across 4 days next week and into the holidays with Mr McDonald and Miss Hollman.

In Netball, Miss Fregonese oversaw our Senior Girls taking on the Senior Vicki Wilson competition in which they chalked up a couple of wins but were over-powered by the top teams in the division.

Meanwhile in Athletics, the recent Toowoomba District

Carnival Miss Mason and Mrs Peterson oversaw the team.

Year 12 student Richard took out the Father Graham tro-

phy for the most successful male athlete on the day, winning three events. Mason (Year 10) also won three, dominating

his Discus and Shot Put while notching up a High Jump win for good measure. Isaiah (Year 8) and Jayden (Year 11) also

won events on the day.

The Darling Downs Track and Field Championships were contested at Glennie and Warwick SHS and more winners and

medallists were accumulated there with Miss Stewart taking charge of the team. Richard broke the record in the 18

Years 200m (23.02s) and also qualified for the DD team in the 400m (51.34s) and Triple Jump (11.88m - pictured). Ma-

son again won his throws, securing his place on the DD team to defend his State Titles in those events in October. He

threw 52.41m in the 16 Years Discus and 16.72m in the 16 Years Shot Put. Abby ran a PB of 11:03 in the Open 3000m,

securing the victory and a spot on the team and also picked up a medal (Bronze) in the 17 Years 1500m, running

5:10.58. Amy (Year 7) grabbed silver and a DD guernsey with silver in the 13 Years 400m (1:05.21). Isaiah and Jayden

backed up their Toowoomba District efforts by also receiving medals for their performances on the day at DD Champs

but narrowly missed out on team selection. Finally,

well done to our Year 12 PE students who took on

the Park Run on the 1st of September.

Starting in July, the Broken Bat Softball Competi-

tion has emerged as one of the most engaging intra

-school competitions we've seen. With over 105

students registering to play in the competition, 3

games a week over 15 weeks, softball has emerged

as a sleeping giant within Harristown State High.

With 7 teams eliminated from the Broken Bat thus

far and with only 4 more games as qualifiers, Zac,

Hayley, and Mr Parker are anticipating an electric

semi-finals series in Week 2 of next term along

with a spectacular grand final game on Friday 26th

of October. Mr Parker tips the teacher team VS

Balls Up! for the finalists.

Congratulations to our four senior students, Jessica Milward,

Jasmine Gray, Mackenzie Docherty and Tomikah Wilkie who

spoke at the 175th anniversary of the Battle of One Tree Hill. It’s

certainly been a busy term with many activities and events, in-

cluding the upcoming trip to Amaroo next week. Please make

sure all permission forms are signed and returned so that your

students don’t miss out on this and other upcoming events in

Term 4.

Senior Biology students had a long productive day working in the QIMR laboratories and the QUT Medi-

cal Engineering Research Facility engaging in antimicrobial assays and human anatomical studies. A

very unique and rewarding experience.
