Area Parent and Children’s Programs and AgenciesGorge Youth MentoringHood River, Wasco County-541-436-0327Para Espanol – Maria Eby (541)399-7289 A program of The Next Door, Gorge Youth Mentoring seeks to change the lives of children for the better, forever. Our volunteer mentors (“Bigs”) work one-on-one with children (“Littles”) ages 6 – 14 to build confi-dence, develop skills, and have fun. After a thorough screening process, Bigs are professionally matched with Littles with whom they share common interests and compatible personalities. Once matched, Bigs and Littles spend about eight hours per month together for a minimum of one year. Activities vary but often include going on hikes, cooking dinner together, trips to the movie theater, and art projects. There is no cost to the Littles or their families, and GYM match coordinators are there to support the match every step of the way with monthly phone calls, fun quarterly events, outing ideas, and more. GYM

helps children achieve success in school, helps them avoid risky behaviors such as fighting and trying drugs and alcohol, and helps improve their self-confidence.

Choosing Quality Child Care Choosing a quality child care program is one of the most important decisions your family will make. Studies show that children in high-quality child care demonstrate greater mathematical ability, greater thinking and attention skills, and fewer behavioral problems than children in lower-quality care. When choosing a quality child care program ask if the program is licensed with the Office of Child Care at the Early Learning Division. Oregon child care regulations are in place to protect health, safety and well-being of children when in care outside their own home. There are several types of licensed child care, each with their own requirements. Preschools and caregivers who are caring for three or fewer children are not required to be licensed, so be sure to ask about health and safety. Ask if the program has had any complaints and contact the Office of Child Care for information about those complaints before choosing care. When choosing care for your child consider the following factors: • Group Size – When interviewing a child care pro-gram, ask how many children are typically in care at one time. Generally, the smaller the group, the more individualized attention each child will receive. • Adult to Child Ratio – How many adults are there per children in the child care home or classroom. The fewer children per adult, means that teachers do a better job of helping children learn and grow. • Education of the Caregiver – Research shows that there is a strong connection between the amount of education that the caregiver has and the quality of care they provide. Although education in early childhood

and child development is desirable, any education whatsoever is highly correlated to the quality of care. It is important that parents ask the provider what their education and background is. • Training Hours Taken by the Caregiver – The training that the provider has taken is also linked to the quality of care. Some minimum training is required by licensing. Parents can ask what training the caregiver has received. • Stability of Staff – How long has the staff person been working at the center, or been providing family child care. Experience and job satisfaction are indicators of quality. Stability and continuity are also indicators of professionalism on the part of the caregiver and/or center. • Curriculum – Are the activities and daily routines in the child care program appropriate for the children in care? Do children have access to toys and materials that are age appropriate? Child Care Partners together with 211 Info can help parents make well informed choices about the child care, preschool or after-school program that is best for their child. 211 Info offers assistance in helping parents find the type of care they need with free personalized child care referrals in Oregon. Resources and information to assist parents in evaluating child care quality and accessing assistance in paying for child care are also available through 211 Info.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book-gifting program facilitated by The Dollywood Foundation. To enroll in the program, children who are preschool age (birth to age 5) must live in Gilliam, Hood River, Sherman, Wasco or Wheeler Counties. The Imagination Library program’s replication strategy is simple; monthly an age appropriate book is mailed directly to the enrolled child’s home at no cost to the parent. The books are mailed directly to the child in order to create a sense of excitement and bond with the books. Dolly has a saying “If books make a child feel special, then the child will feel books are special” To sign your child up for Imagination Library, visit your local library, go to (www.imaginationlibrary.com) or call us at (541) 506-2234. The Imagination Library in the Four Rivers region is sponsored by these partners: The James and Shirley Rippey Family Foundation, The Next Door Inc., Four Rivers Early Learning Hub, Wasco Electric Cooperative, Gilliam County Public Library, and Friends of the Arlington Public Library. If you would like to become a sponsor of Imagination Library, please contact Christa Rude at 541-506-2255.

“Why You May Want to Skip the Sippy Cup for Your Baby”

“A sippy cup was never designed for a child’s development, only for a mother’s convenience. -American Speech and Hearing Association” (ASHA). When a child drinks from a sippy cup, they use the same swallow-ing pattern as a bottle. This is appropriate as long as a child is still breast-feeding consistently for nutrition. However, beyond that phase it is important for your toddler to start developing muscles for a “mature” swallow! An open cup and straw cup require more movement and control from the lips, cheeks, tongue and jaw. When you chose a cup or straw for your child, you encourage greater development of these crucial muscles. When drinking from an open cup or straw, the tip of the tongue elevates behind the top teeth to push the liquid back to swallow. When drinking from a sippy cup, the spout is in the way. This creates an abnormal swallowing pattern, rather than a correct one (Bahr, 2010). To control those spills and promote strong development, find a 360-cup or a straw cup for your little one!

EMERGENCY SUPPLIES• Build a Go-Kit. Start with your camping or travel box• Stock up – 3 days to 3 weeks of emergency supplies. • Use the Go-Kit checklist here: https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit• Have a Go-Kit in your car year ‘round

COMMUNICATIONS• Cellular networks can be a problem in a disaster. Text may be more reliable than calls• Business point of sale systems are also reliant on cellular - i.e. Square• Have a backup communication plan that doesn’t rely on cell or internet• Opt-in to Hood River County Citizen Alerts: www.HoodRiverSheriff.com/events/emergency-alerts

FAMILY EMERGENCY PLANS• Think about your family evacuation plans – an out of state contact you all call to check in; safe meeting places; how you would reconnect if separated. • Practice it – talk through as a family over dinner.

WILDFIRE PREVENTION AND RESPONSE• During a wildfi re, there are three levels of evacuation: Level 1 – READY: Pack & prepare for evacuation. Level 2 – SET: Ready to leave at a moment’s notice Level 3 – GO: Evacuate immediately

• Know the risks and respect fi re restrictions, such as campfi re bans and safe lawn mowing • Don’t hesitate- evacuate. Prepare to go early. Then you’ll have more time to help your neighbors.

EVACUATION• Think about where you’d go, and how you’d get there if roads are full or closed. • A trailer or motorhome is a great evacuation home base.• Animals and livestock smell fi re long before you do. Act early to get them into a smaller place, where you can more easily load them into trailers or crates later for evacuation.• Make an evacuation list of the top 5 things you’d take if you had to leave in 5 minutes.
