Presentation Notes
Mrs Dutton has been teaching 6 years, much of which has been spent teaching senior school from N5 to Advanced Higher. Mrs McDowell has 22 years of experience teaching from S1 to S6 and regularly taught the old Advanced Higher. By sharing the Advanced Higher class we feel that students gain from the varied experiences that both staff bring. We feel our teaching styles are complimentary and hope that be sharing the work load around the internal assessment and the project we will better be able to support your young people.

Presentation Notes
The CfE Advanced Higher is now into it’s third year. In May/June next year your young person will sit their Advanced Higher Exam. Just after the Easter holidays they will also have to submit their final draft of their project. Both of these are marked by markers employed by the SQA. To achieve a course award a candidate has to achieve 45% or above. Notionally, to achieve an “A” the percentage score would have to exceed 75%. To achieve a “B” 65% and to achieve a “C” 50%.

Presentation Notes
In addition to the external assessment there is also internal assessment that is marked within Peebles High School by Mrs Dutton and Mrs McDowell. Unit 1 runs in tandem with the researching chemistry unit and unit 2 runs in tandem with the project. The unit assessment for unit 3 is due by the October break and unit 1 before the Christmas break. Unit 2 will be assessed in March.
The approach to advanced higher chemistry in this department is to try to bridge the gap between school and university. The theory lessons are run as tutorials with some direct lecturing. The pupils have access to the supporting PowerPoint's on the school server and are given a set of printed notes from scholar. They are asked to use their study time to consolidate knowledge and try out additional questions in the scholar booklets and from an additional questions book. For practical techniques (unit 3) they are expected to keep a comprehensive lab book as preparation for their project and they will be asked to formally write up 2 of these to support the development of their scientific report writing skills.

Show my homework. The department post homework and deadlines electronically on show my homework. Formal homeworks are less regular for Advanced Higher classes as it is assumed that they are completing regular consolidation work using the materials provided. There are past paper questions available as extra work on the shared server. This will allow pupils to prepare for exam style questions. Each section of the course has a mini tracking test (sometimes every two weeks) this has proved effective at allowing the students to identify weak areas in preparation for the end of unit assessments and prelim exam.
Scholar is an electronic learning tool designed by
Heriot Watt University and contains course materials,
animations, interactive diagrams, topic summaries and
assessment tasks.
Each pupil has received an
individual
username and password. Why not
ask them to show you the
materials?

Pupils are provided with printed notes from scholar but they also have log in details to access the supporting online quizzes and animations.

Presentation Notes
The BrightRED DIGITAL ZONE is a fully interactive online resource where students can put in that extra effort to help them get the best possible grades. The BrightRED DIGITAL ZONE has been developed in collaboration with Professor Bill Buchanan at Edinburgh Napier University to use the very latest technology to help students learn in the most rewarding way possible. All Digital Zone material is completely free to use and, although it integrates entirely with our wonderful Guides, it works very well exactly as it is.
As was the case last year, young people in the senior phase will have four tracking reports in Sept, Oct, Dec and Feb. We would encourge you to contact us if your child is not on track to pass to discuss further interventions and support.

Presentation Notes
Encourage your young person to use their personal support period effectively. Ask them to let you know whenever they have a learning conversation with their personal support teacher. If possible talk to them about what barriers to their learning they identified during this conversation and about the targets they have set themselves to move forward.

Presentation Notes
We aim to involve the students in decisions to ensure they get the best out of the course. For the past two years they have been formally surveyed and here are just a couple of comments that have been shared with the class to hopefully give them some advice as to how to succeed.
