Routines

• English and Maths every morning*

• Curriculum: Topic, Science, Music, RE, French, Computing, PSHE and PE.

*Timetabling does change during creative curriculum and celebration weeks.

Maths Sets• Children are grouped into sets based on

assessment of their learning and progress from Year 5.

• Both sets will receive teaching in all areas needed to cover the Year 6 Maths curriculum objectives and be fully prepared for the end of KS2 tests.

Homework Expectations• Regular independent reading and

opportunities to discuss what they have read with an adult.

• Regular times tables practise.• Regular spelling practise.• A longer homework task once per week linked to English or Curriculum.• Mathletics tasks, 3-5 per week.

Homework Expectations• All homework tasks set on a Monday to be completed

by the following Monday (sanctions if homework not completed)

• All homework tasks published on class web page with relevant links to resources

needed.• Special homework diaries in Year 6 to prepare children for being more independent and responsible for their learning in secondary school.

Presentation and Standards

• Always smartly dressed in correct uniform – shirts always tucked in!• Correct school shoes and appropriate

socks.• Correct PE kit at all times.• Pride in their work (in every subject) and their appearance.

Behavioural Expectations

• Being polite at all times to all the school community.

• Always putting in 100% effort in all subjects.• Ambassadors of the school and role models for younger pupils.

Prefects• A new role for Year 6 in The Discovery School

in order to provide more opportunities for the children to be ambassadors of the school.

• Meet and Greet, promoting Vision and Values and representing the school at events throughout the year.• Special ties!

Rewards• Rewards– Behaviour points linked to our Outstanding

Pupil Ladder.– If children earn 5 points in a week then they

are rewarded with Choosing Time.– The points will also determine whether they are able to participate in an end of term celebration activity.– Stickers, raffle tickets, certificates, Choosing Time and Star of the Week.

– Think about it = warning– Teacher choice = sanction linked to missing break/ lunch/

Choosing time– Parent Contact* - If deemed necessary. – In addition, children will also be sent to Senior Leaders, Deputy Head then the Headteacher.

*Unless your child has a specific behaviour plan which has been agreed with parents.

SATs Tests• Week commencing Monday 9th May.• English – Reading comprehension test.• SPAG test (spelling, punctuation and

grammar).• Writing – Teacher assessment of

writing throughout the year.• Maths – Paper 1 - Arithmetic, Paper 2

and 3 – Reasoning.

Grimm Fairy Tales Topic

• Linked to the performance at The Music @ Malling concert.

• Workshops from English National Ballet and Chamber Domaine orchestra.

• English, art, music and P.E. objectives will be linked to this for the first three weeks.

WW2 Topic –’On The Home Front’

• History based – investigating children’s experiences during World War Two.

• English teaching based on key text ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’.

• All Living Things – a study of living things in their natural environment, including interdependence, classification and adaptation.

Computing and E-Safety• Digital Media project linked to our

WW2 topic.• Children should be aware from e-

safety lessons throughout the school of procedures to follow in order to keep themselves safe on the internet.

• When pupils are asked to complete homework using the internet we will also remind them of safe internet practice.

suited to a grammar school, some are better suited to a non-selective school.

PESE Assessment Decisions• Sent to you by October 15th

• Based on test result and Headteacher Panel decision• For those below the threshold, Headteachers can refer

exceptional cases to a Headteacher Appeal Panel for professional consideration

• We can only do this if we have sufficient evidence to show that the child has underperformed in the test

• Parents cannot appeal against the decision received on 14th October. However, you can still name a selective (Grammar) school on your SCAF and then submit a parental appeal for a place at this school in March
