WELCOME

TO THE ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS PARISH SCHOOL COMMUNITY

St. John of the Cross Parish was established to challenge its people

to excellence; not only in the physical plant and dedication to

giving its children all the spiritual, academic and physical opportunity but also in the main purpose of leading people to the

full Gospel of the Lord.

St. John of the Cross was named its patron because he was not

only a Canonized Saint but also a Doctor of the Church in the field

of Ascetic and Spiritual Theology. In a world of nuclear threat and

appalling hunger and social injustice, St. John of the Cross message leads people to fulfill

their call to more than being an ordinary Christian

Rev. William J. Bennett

Founding Pastor

St. John of the Cross Parish School is dedicated to providing a quality Catholic education for our children. We strive to work together with parents/guardians

to provide a learning environment in which students will continue to grow spiritually

and academically. Recognizing and respecting the uniqueness

of each child, we provide opportunities for our students to

use their gifts and talents, to give witness to their faith, and to

make responsible decisions.

Our hope is that each family will feel the spirit of St. John of the

Cross and take pride in our school and community, as

together we spread the Good News to others.

Our students are encouraged to develop a positive attitude toward learning and a respect for themselves and others. We strive to prepare our students to meet the challenges of a global society as responsible leaders who exhibit ethical and moral behavior. We are blessed with excellent parish facilities that contribute to the education of our children. Our staff and the resources available to them support the well rounded education of the children. All are responsible in creating an environment enlivened by love and respect of God and others. Parents, teachers, and students comprise a dynamic team involved in the process of education. We recognize that parents are the primary educators of their children. Our desire is to have every child in the parish who wishes to attend St. John of the Cross Parish School the opportunity to do so and not be hindered from attending because of finances. To that end, limited funds are allocated to those who are experiencing either prolonged limited family income or extraordinary circumstances. In the spring of each year, there will be information forms for tuition assistance through Smart Tuition Aid. This annual process needs to be initiated by the parent. The pastor will then follow up with the submitting family in June. An individualized payment plan will be established between the parties. If during the course of the school year your financial situation is such you are unable to fulfill your tuition obligation, it is the parent’s responsibility to contact the School Finance Office or the pastor. Failure to make this contact will cause St. John of the Cross Parish School to take action. All accounts with a balance due as of May 15th will be treated as delinquent accounts. Transfers and diplomas may not be issued, and registration for the following school year will not be accepted, if a tuition delinquency continues without entering into an agreement with the pastor and School Finance Office. REFUNDS If a student withdraws prior to the 10th calendar day of the month, fifty (50) percent of the tuition charged for that month is refundable. If a student withdraws on the 10th day of the month or anytime thereafter, the tuition for the month is fully earned. Beyond the month of withdrawal, as outlined above, any tuition pre-paid by the student’s family will be refunded. Registration fees for families currently enrolled at St. John of the Cross Parish School are non-refundable. A non-refundable registration fee will also apply to families not currently enrolled at St. John of the Cross Parish School, payable at the time of application. The amount of this fee will be set by the School Advisory Board. BOOK/EQUIPMENT CHARGE Students are expected to pay for damage to books and equipment. This includes writing in/on non-consumable texts, desks, and materials of other students. GRADUATION FEE There will be graduation fees for each eighth grade student. This fee will offset expenses during the eighth grade year. Such expenses include class sweatshirt, class composite photo, May Crowning photo, memorial game shirt, cap & gown, diploma, awards, printing costs, ribbon, and Great America trip (including transportation).

ADULT EXPECTATIONS All parents of a child/ren enrolled at St. John of the Cross Parish School understand that teachers are professionals who are committed to the education and well-being of your child/ren. In the spirit of that belief, teachers will

respond to parent letters, phone calls, and email communication in a timely manner; invite parental participation and maintain open communication;

properly prepare for each class in order to attain curricular objectives; work with each child to foster a spirit of achievement; provide a safe and caring environment; structure discipline and classroom environment with a Christian, Catholic attitude; use appropriate language in all parent and student interaction; agree to disagree respectfully.

In turn, we ask that parents understand that

unscheduled visits to the classroom teacher cannot be accommodated; appointments enable classroom teachers to spend adequate time listening to your concerns;

in order to resolve conflicts or voice concerns, parents will meet first with the teacher. Then, if a parent is dissatisfied with the meeting, parents may make an appointment with an administrator;

they will support academic and disciplinary policies as stated in the handbook and as set forth by the individual teacher; they will use appropriate language in all parent and teacher interaction; agree to disagree respectfully.

As partners in the education of children, the parent/guardian within the community is expected to demonstrate respectful behavior at all times whether on or off school grounds or at school-related events, which includes athletic events. BEHAVIOR As educators in a Catholic School, our task is to provide a learning environment conducive to the development of the whole Christian person and to create a pleasant atmosphere where each child can strive to attain his/her maximum potential. To ensure that environment, there must be discipline and rules that are observed. Students must respect each other, the rules and regulations established by the school, and the authority of those who enforce those rules. Students must learn to accept responsibility for their actions and understand the consequences of their choices. All students of St. John of the Cross Parish School are held to the same expectations of good behavior while they are on school/parish property or representing St. John of the Cross outside of school. In an effort to maintain consistency of student behavior throughout the building we are adapting the following behavioral matrix. It will be posted in key places in the building along with every classroom. It combines our Catholic identity, positive character traits, and expected behavior. Each month, the principal recognizes students who receive recognition from school staff for outstanding behavior. Each grade level teacher plans their own in-class recognition.

Behavior Expectations

I. RESPECT FOR ALL ADULTS, CHILDREN AND PROPERTY

i. Following the directions of all teachers and supervisors ii. Not disrupting the learning environment iii. Speaking and acting appropriately towards another at all times iv. Being prepared for all classes (including Fine Arts) v. Observing a “hands off” policy

Tampering with computer equipment All students have the right to due process that includes notification, an opportunity to be heard, and the right to a fair decision.

BEHAVIOR CONSEQUENCES In the course of an academic school year, if a student does not meet expectations, a behavior notice will be sent to the parent/guardian as to the disrespect or disregard for the rule or regulation. The child must return the notice, with the parent/guardian signature, the following day. Upon receiving a behavior notice, parents/guardians are asked, as primary educators of the child, to discuss the inappropriate behavior with the child and provide appropriate consequences at home.

As children grow, they are expected to become more responsible for their actions and to model their best behavior for younger students. Students who represent St. John of the Cross outside of school through the extracurricular program (including athletics) are also held to a higher standard. The consequences for continued inappropriate behavior in school will result according to the chart on the following page. Any student who repeatedly disregards the guidance of parents, teachers and administrators, and does not correct inappropriate behavior as stated in a student contract will be placed on probation. If further inappropriate behavior occurs, the parent/guardian may be asked to remove their child from the school. At any time during this discipline process, depending on the nature of behavior, an in-school or out-of-school suspension may be given. Any student suspended from school is also suspended from any extra-curricular activities that day

CHILD CUSTODY According to State Law, in the event of divorce, both custodial and non-custodial parents retain equal rights for access to school activities, volunteer activities, parent meetings and other events, unless an order of protection is in effect.

COMMUNICATION We believe that parents and teachers need to work together to provide optimal learning experiences for children. To help make this possible, the administration and faculty members provide several vehicles of communication for parents/guardians teachers’ newsletters/website letters from the Principal phone call to parents/guardians report cards voice mail

email accessibility notes from teachers student status reports parent/teacher conferences progress reports (Gr 3-8) parent meetings

Teachers and administrators are willing to meet with parents/guardians and discuss a child’s progress whenever necessary. During the school day, however, a teacher’s first priority is the instruction of his/her group of students. To assure optimal teaching/learning time for all, teachers may not leave their classrooms for individual conferences nor can they be expected to be available for unscheduled conferences. If parents/guardians have any concerns that need to be discussed with a teacher or administrator or wish a conference with a particular teacher, a call or appointment should be made. Drop ins before or after school are strongly discouraged. Please do not call teachers at home. If any parent/guardian note or call has not been returned within two days, please contact an administrator. Classroom and/or individual student concerns must first be addressed with the teacher(s) directly involved. If after the initial discussion, it is felt that further discussion is necessary, please contact an administrator. Documentation of the meetings will be taken. Follow-up contact with the parent/guardian will be made within 30 days following administrative involvement. Any office communication sent home to parents in each family will be sent with the youngest and only child. Broadcast Emails All broadcast emails must be approved first by the administration.

DESKS/LOCKERS Desks and lockers are to be kept neat and orderly. No mirrors, chandeliers, or other unnecessary decorations are allowed. Students are not to use any locker other than their own. The school reserves the right to inspect lockers at any time deemed necessary. No locker decorations for any student’s birthday of any grade level.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM The St. John of the Cross Parish School educational program is curriculum-based. Curriculum for a subject area consists of skills, concepts, and values that are to be learned at each grade level. The written guide for each curriculum area from the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Education is based on educational research, national academic standards, and the professional expertise of educators at the local level. Curriculum development is an ongoing process. Each year the school curriculum is reviewed. Revision may result in updated materials, expansion of concepts, or the introduction of new teaching practices to best meet student needs. Our goal is to foster in each child the desire to become a life-long learner, to provide students with the skills necessary to find success in their educational endeavors, and to instill in our children a commitment to God, neighbor and self through the teachings of the Catholic faith. Principles of Early Childhood Education

Young children are concrete learners.

Young children learn through multi-sensory involvement.

Young children learn by experimentation and exploring.

Young children learn by observing and interacting with peers and adults.

Young children are empowered by solving problems and making decisions.

Young children’s self-esteem is strengthened when they experience success.

Different children learn in different ways and in different time frames.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES The use of personal electronic devices and items of this nature are not permitted in the school at any time. Ereaders are allowed if parents have signed a permission form and are only allowed under the guidelines of each teacher’s classroom. Cellular phones may not be used by a student during school hours on school grounds. (Please read cell phone policy.) During school hours cell phones must be turned off. Use of the camera feature on cell phones is never permitted on school grounds. Such items will be confiscated and be returned only to the parent/guardian by the principal/assistant principal. Students may not send any friend requests or messaging through school networking to faculty and staff. 1 Administration. No school personnel shall administer any prescription or non-prescription medicine unless the School has the student's current and complete Medication Authorization Form approved and signed by the School Principal.

Medication Authorization Forms are available on the school website. The School retains the right to deny requests to administer medication to the students provided that such denial is indicated on the Medication Authorization Form. If the School denies a request and authorization for the administration of medication, parents/guardians must make other arrangements for the administration of medication to students, such as arranging for medication to be administered before or after school or having the parent/guardian or designee of the parent/guardian administer the medication in school. 2. Self-Administration. A student may self-administer medication at school if so ordered by his or her licensed prescriber per the student's current and completed Medication Authorization Form. Students who suffer from asthma, allergies, or other conditions that require the immediate use of medication shall be permitted to carry such medication and to self-administer such medication without supervision by school personnel only if the School has on file for the student a current and completed Medication Authorization Form. Otherwise, such medication must be stored in a locked cabinet under the control of the School and the self-administration of medication shall be under the supervision of the School.

3. Appropriate Containers. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide the School with all medication in appropriate containers that are:

a. Prescription-labeled by a pharmacy or licensed prescriber (displaying Rx number, student name, medication, dosage, direction for administration, date and refill schedule, pharmacy label, and name/initials of pharmacist) or

b. Manufacturer-labeled for non-prescription over-the-counter medication.

4. Storage of Medication. Medication received by the School in accordance with a completed Medication Authorization Form and in an appropriate container shall be stored in a locked cabinet. Access to the locked cabinet shall be limited to the School Principal, his/her designees, and the school nurse (if applicable). Medication requiring refrigeration shall be stored in a refrigerator that cannot be accessed by students and shall be kept separate from food items. At the end of the school year, or the end of the treatment regime, the student's parent/guardian will be responsible for removing any unused medication from the school. If the parent/guardian does not pick up the medication by the end of the school year, the School will appropriately discard the medication.

GENERAL HEALTH INFORMATION

Emergency Medical Care. In the event a student shall become ill or injured or otherwise need immediate medical attention that is not contained in the Medical Authorization Form on file with the School Principal or his/her designee or with the School nurse (if applicable), the Principal or his/her designee shall attempt to contact the student’s parent/guardian utilizing the information provided on the student’s Medical Information and Emergency Notification Form. If the student’s parent/guardian cannot be contacted, the School Principal or his/her designee shall attempt to contact the person identified by the parent/guardian as the student’s emergency contact. In either event, such contact shall be made to advise of the observed illness or injury or need for medical attention and to obtain further instructions from the student’s parent/guardian or emergency contact.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, the School Principal or his/her designee or School nurse (if applicable) or other certified school personnel may call State or local emergency medical services before or after attempting to call the student’s parent/guardian or emergency contact if, in the exercise of school-related supervision of the student, the student’s illness, injury or need for immediate medical attention is perceived to be in need of emergency medical care.

Please update your emergency cards throughout the year. Any change to cell phones, work numbers and even e-mail address, is important to us to provide care to your children.

Student Illness Before School We ask that you are considerate of the other students and staff when sending your child to school. If a child has a fever greater than 100 degrees, they should remain at home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. In addition, if a child is vomiting or experiences diarrhea, they should remain at home until free of these symptoms for 24 hours.

Other situations that may necessitate keeping your child at home are, but not limited to: a severe or uncontrollable cough; runny nose with severe congestion that interferes with normal activity; purulent conjunctivitis (pink eye) until 24 hours after the treatment has started; rash with fever or behavior changes; strep throat or other streptococcal infection, until 24 hours after starting antibiotics and the fever has subsided; lethargy.

Do not send your child to school if they are ill. Tests, assessments and school work can be made up when he/she returns. Report absence to the school office. Communicable Diseases When the school becomes aware of a student with a contagious/communicable disease, the school shall notify the appropriate parents/guardians in writing. Appropriate information on the disease may be attached to the school’s notification, if the information is provided by a health care source such as a hospital or licensed health agency.

Health professionals determine the incubation period for contagious diseases/conditions. Students excluded from school due to a communicable disease must present a written and signed statement from a physician indicating that the student is non-contagious and may return to school. Questions regarding communicable diseases should be directed to the local health department.

If your child has seen a doctor for an illness and has been diagnosed with a transmittable disease (i.e. conjunctivitis, strep, fifth disease, scarlet fever), notify the school nurse. First Aid If minor injuries should occur during the school day, children will be given first aid. A parent/guardian is informed, if necessary, or called immediately if the injury is questionable or more serious.

Head Lice Head lice do, on occasion, affect our student population. Procedures are in place at school to safeguard our students against the spread of head lice. Each student has their own locker for storage of clothing. Students are reminded to tuck hats and scarves into their coat sleeves when not being worn and to never share items for their head with anyone else.

Head checks are not being done at school unless a student complains of or exhibits head itching or a live louse is seen on a student. When this occurs the nurse is notified and the student’s head is examined privately by the nurse. Parents are notified individually by phone call if their child is found to have any evidence of head lice at school. Care and treatment needs are discussed with the parent. Although it is not required that

Page 30: Parent/Student Handbook 2016-2017johnofthecross-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/school/files/2011/... · 2017. 6. 16. · Yearbook $20 per book Clubs Varies by club Extra-Curricular Activities

students be sent home many parents do wish to pick their children up to begin treatment as soon as possible. The student may remain at school for the remainder of the school day, but will need to receive treatment for head lice prior to returning to school. On return to school following treatment, the school nurse will check the student for live lice and assess progress in treating the infestation. The nurse may check other students in the same household. The nurse, in consultation with the administration, may send the student home for further treatment if indicated.

Contact the school nurse if you would like advice regarding your children 708-292-1103.

Illness In School If a student feels ill they will be sent to the nurse. The nurse will determine if it is necessary to release students due to illness. If your child is sent home early from school due to illness, he/she will not be allowed to participate in any SJC activities after school on that day. If student is released from school due to illness, he/she may not return to school on the same day.

Individual Health/Emergency Action Plans Should your student require care during the school day for a known condition, severe allergy, asthma, diabetes, seizure, or other health concern please contact the school nurse at 708-292-1103 as soon as possible.

Vision and Hearing Screenings for vision and hearing may be conducted during the school year by the school nurse as time permits. Please let the office know, in writing, if you would prefer that your child not be screened for either vision and hearing screening. These are very basic screenings and are not meant to replace a visit to your physician. Per state guidelines vision screening will be conducted with students in preschool, 2nd and 8th grades. Hearing screening will be conducted with students in preschool-3rd grades. Teachers and parents may refer students for these screenings if they have a concern by contacting the school nurse.

State Health Requirements for School a. Health Exams: Health exams / immunizations are required for all students in accordance with the Illinois (ISBE) requirements. A

health exam is required for all children entering Preschool for the first time, Kindergarten and 6th grade. Preschool and sixth grade students must meet the Hepatitis B requirements. Health exams are also required for sports (see the SJC Athletic Association Handbook). Health exams must be completed within 1 year prior to entry into the above grades. Health exam forms are required to be submitted to the office prior to the first day of school or the student will be sent home. An out-of-state or out-of-country transfer student must present a health exam that was completed within 1 year prior to entry on a form comparable to the Illinois Health Exam form.

b. Dental: All students in Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grade are required to have an oral health exam performed by a licensed dentist. Each child is required to present proof of the exam prior to May 15 of the school year. Form available on the school website.

c. Eye Examination with an optometrist or ophthalmologist is required for students entering Kindergarten or students entering first grade who did not attend Kindergarten by October 15. Form available on the school website.

HOMEWORK PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT The purpose of homework is to: *Reinforce and practice concepts and skills *Instill self-motivation and responsibility *Encourage creativity

Page 31: Parent/Student Handbook 2016-2017johnofthecross-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/school/files/2011/... · 2017. 6. 16. · Yearbook $20 per book Clubs Varies by club Extra-Curricular Activities

*Promote higher order thinking skills *Assist with time management *Foster independence Homework expectations are differentiated by primary, intermediate and junior high grades. Homework Policy Points for Primary Grades: *There is an indicator on the report card to record and communicate to parents whether a student consistently returns homework to school. *Homework should be completed in an environment free from distraction. *Good homework practices should be started early. *The following allotment of time is suggested at each grade level: Kindergarten- 20 minutes First Grade- 30 minutes Second Grade- 45 minutes Third Grade- 45-60 minutes *If your child is consistently needing more than the allotment of time, contact the teacher. *Homework directives will be posted on an individual teacher’s website. Homework Policy Points for Intermediate Grades: *Homework is to reinforce and practice concepts, and students will be held accountable for their work within the discretion of the teacher. *On average, 4th Grade may have 45-60 minutes of homework per night, and 5th/6th grade students may have 60 minutes of homework per night. Students will manage their long-term assignments consistent with this expectation. *Assignments may be modified in accordance with the academic need of the student. Homework Policy for Junior High: *Homework may include the following: test or quiz review, writing assignments, reading and long term projects, studying in order to prepare for future classes. *A typical amount of nightly homework that would be expected of junior high students is 60-90 minutes. *Students are encouraged to discuss any extenuating circumstances or concerns regarding homework completion with the student’s teacher. *No projects will be due on the first day of return after an extended school break. *Grading rubrics will be given to students at the start of long-term projects. *If a student forgets a homework assignment or school materials, and a parent brings it to the school, the assignment or materials will be placed in the teacher’s mailbox. We will not interrupt the learning environment. Homework Policy in regards to vacations: *Whereas a teacher is not obligated to provide homework in advance of a vacation, such work may be provided at the discretion of the teacher. If students would like to try and request homework, this request should be made a week in advance. Homework is discouraged over the weekend; there may be times when it is unavoidable. Effort will be made to keep it at a minimum. When a student is absent, homework assignment requests are to be made at the same time the school office is being notified of the absence prior to 9:00 am. Unless other arrangements are made, the homework materials may be picked up outside the school office on the homework table

Page 32: Parent/Student Handbook 2016-2017johnofthecross-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/school/files/2011/... · 2017. 6. 16. · Yearbook $20 per book Clubs Varies by club Extra-Curricular Activities

after 3:30. Students absent for a single day will be given appropriate time to complete missed work. Students absent due to vacations will be given time to make up work missed at a rate equal to the number of days missed. Students absent due to prolonged illness/surgery will have ample time to make up their work. Provisions will be made with the teacher(s). No parent/student is allowed in the classroom areas of the building after 4:00 pm to go to the locker or classroom. The maintenance staff will not unlock the classroom doors. Drop ins before or after school are strongly discouraged. All conferences with teachers must be scheduled in advance. Homework Notices: Homework notices are issued to students when homework is incomplete. This is a means of communication between school and home and in no way disciplinary.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is open after school until 4:30, Monday through Thursday for group project work only on full school days. Otherwise, Extended Day utilizes the LRC after school.

Library Loan Policies

Students in 1st – 4th grades may borrow up to 3 books at a time with a 2 week due date.

Students in 5th – 8th grades may borrow 4 books at a time with a 3 week due date.

All books may be renewed twice under most circumstances. Special note: Encyclopedias have a 1 day due date.

Videos may not be renewed.

Overdue Materials

Overdue books/materials are the responsibility of the student.

At the end of the school year, any student who has not returned all of his/her library books/materials may forfeit a portion of his/her SJC Day. Eighth Grade graduates will miss a portion of 8th grade activities.

Lost/Unreturned/Damaged Materials

Parents will be notified in writing of any library items that are or damaged. Students may, however, continue to borrow from the library. Because lost items often show up later in the year, no payment will be requested until the 3rd trimester of school. At this time, parents will receive a written notification of the lost/unreturned item with the cost of the replacement.

Lost/unreturned or damaged material will be assessed as follows:

Lost/Unreturned: Books and Magazines – the current cost to replace the lost item Damaged: Actual cost of repairing, rebinding or

Bar-coded Manila envelopes (for magazines) - $1 each replacing the item, whichever is necessary.

Students will be required to pay for books or any other material.

Students are not allowed to remain in the building unless they are in an activity/club or enrolled in the Extended Day Program, beginning immediately after school.

LOST AND FOUND One of our goals is to teach the students responsibility. Each year many items such as sweaters, hats, gloves, gym uniforms, shoes, glasses, and jewelry are never claimed. All items must be marked with the student’s name. The LOST and FOUND shelves are located on the first floor outside the office by the courtyard door. We recommend that items of personal value not be brought to school. Items not claimed are given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

For the safety of the young students getting in and out of cars, please refrain from talking on a cell phone. Children should exit the vehicle on the curb side. The first day of school children will line up at various points on the playground as indicated by their homeroom number. The second day of school, the children will enter the building when they arrive (8:40 - 8:50 am) and go directly to their lockers/classrooms rather than wait in the homeroom lines. (Homeroom lines will still be used at recess time.) Students will be expected to go directly to their classrooms after using their lockers and remain in their respective homerooms. Students who arrive before 8:40 am for a particular reason (tutoring, test taking, choir, band) must enter at the main entrance, sign in at the office, and go to their designated places. Students who arrive after 8:55 am are tardy and must also use the main entrance, sign in at the office, and receive a tardy notice. AM ARRIVAL (See Diagram page 34)

Dropping off of all students must be done in the parking lot.

Students walking from the north and east area of school (Courtland Circle, Rugeley, Caroline) must cross where crossing guards are present. Students may enter the lot via the sidewalk along the north side of the building. Students crossing Wolf Rd and Courtland Circle will be directed to use the church/parish center sidewalk and cross the lot at the direction of the person supervising the crosswalk.

Bike riders will park and lock their bikes at the bike racks located outside of the LRC and walk to the north entrance. Once this entrance is closed they must follow the sidewalk to the main entrance.

Families with 3 year old Preschool and/or ½ Day Kindergarten students only are to use Door #7 on Caroline Avenue. Children will be taken from the car by teachers/sides. Parents should circle around the parish campus for arrival so that they are traveling south on Caroline Avenue. directed through the parking area to the main entrance where cars will be stopped, children will disembark (4-6 cars at a time) and enter through the main doors. (See the diagram of the parking lot.) Directing the flow of traffic in the manner will allow for less congestion on Wolf Rd. and a greater number of cars to let children off at one time.

Walking children will still be crossed by an adult at the crosswalk.

Cars will be directed to use the exit at the middle of the lot if dropping off at the main entrance or coming from a parked car. Cars using the north entrance will exit on Caroline St. Cars using the Caroline exit must watch for buses, continue only straight down Rugeley or TURN LEFT onto Caroline.

For the safety of all, it is imperative that drivers DO NOT get out of line when exiting.

may use the south exit onto Wolf Road if going north (right turn only) or must exit onto 51st St. When parking in this area please use the “stadium method” of parking so that all cars are parked facing Wolf Rd. and move forward only when leaving your space.

Please exit as safely and quickly as possible and follow the directions of the adult supervisors at all times. Supervisors will be wearing an orange hat or vest.

Students waiting for late pickup will remain in the school lobby.

Do not use your cell phone at arrival and dismissal time; it’s the law.

Be sure to give these procedures to anyone who may be picking up your children during the year.

If your child is driven home, pick up/drop off should follow current procedures within the boundaries of the school. In order to keep our children safe it is imperative that we remain flexible and work together. Adults will be helping to supervise and guide student walkers and direct drivers. Please heed their directions even if it may not be convenient for you at the moment. The supervisors will be doing their job to help assure our students’ safety.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT Sexual harassment is an unwanted and unwelcome sexual behavior that interferes with a person’s life and/or creates an uncomfortable environment. It includes a broad range of behaviors including sexual remarks and jokes, suggestive looks and gestures, touching and other kinds of physical contact. St. John of the Cross Parish School seeks to create a Christian environment permeated by Gospel values of love, compassion and justice. All members of the school community are expected to demonstrate respect for themselves and one another.

Sexual harassment of one employee by another, of a student by an employee, or of one student by another is unacceptable conduct. Employees or students who engage in any type of sexual harassment will be subject to appropriate discipline, including suspension and/or dismissal.

Retaliation in any form against an employee or student who exercises his or her right to make a complaint under this policy is strictly prohibited, and will itself be cause for appropriate disciplinary action.

Any employee or student, who knowingly makes false charges against an employee or a student in an attempt to demean, harass, abuse, or embarrass that individual, shall be subject to the sanctions for misconduct set forth above.

Any form of sexual harassment is in direct opposition to our school’s philosophy and values and will not be tolerated.

Students who experience any form of sexual harassment are encouraged to bring the problem to the attention of a teacher or the principal. The fact that someone did not intend to sexually harass an individual is generally not considered a defense to a complaint of sexual harassment. In most cases, it is the effect and characteristics of the behavior that determine if the behavior constitutes sexual harassment. Under certain circumstances, sexual harassment may constitute sexual abuse under the Illinois Human Rights Act (775 ILCS 5/2-101 et seq.). In all such cases we will comply with the statute and take prompt action to protect the victims(s) of the alleged abuse.

SKATEBOARDS/ROLLER BLADES ETC. Skate Shoes (Heely’s), Skateboards, roller blades, hockey sticks and scooters are not permitted on the school/parish grounds or in the school building at any time. Such items will be confiscated, and be returned only to the parent/guardian by the principal/assistant principal.

SNOWBALLS Snowballs, or any snow and ice throwing are not allowed before, during or after school. Students are not to climb onto or slide down any snow mounds that may develop.

SPECIAL LUNCHES For special lunches, treat days, etc., we will not provide for dietary needs of students. They may bring their own lunch. Part of the educational process is for children to know their own limitations and to adapt accordingly.
