Twenty nine years in the life of anorganization is goodenougha time for renewals and rethinking. It is not only the issue ofrenewal of technologies or machineries, but also renewal ofour ways of thinking and working in the organization.

For the last 29 years, Nalconians have sincerely pursuedexcellence in almost all fields of the business and despite allodds, have succeeded in creating an organization that is nowwell known as a blue chip Navratna Public Sector Enterpriseof the country.

Building Nalco has meant not merely contributing to thealuminium industry of the country, but it has also involvedenormous task of socio-economic development ofDamanjodiand Angul areas where Nalco plants operate. Rehabilitationof displaced families, employment and income generationof local people, provision of drinking water, education andhealth, development of infrastructure, and other communitydevelopment activities have earned Nalco a place of pridenot only in the corporate world of India but also in the heartsof the people of Orissa.

But as we pause, and look ahead, we do clearly see thechallengesof change that areunfoldingbeforeus. In thispresentscenario, global competition is threatening to dismantle theold manufacturing regime. The companies, which thrived inprotected environment of business, now find it difficult tosurvive. The technology, the knowledge base, the products,

the pricing mechanism, the customers expectations and thebusiness equations are changing too fast for anybodys comfort. On the top of it, the prevailing global economic crisis hasseverely affected the corporate sectors.

In this situation, all of us have to make concerted efforts tocurtail costs and improve productivity in all the segments ofour activities. We must ensure that our mines and plants areoperatedat optimumcapacity, while keeping the consumptionof raw materials and electricity well within norms. We mustconsider austerity as way of our life.

Expansion and growth

Despite these challenges, what sets Nalco apart is thecontinuous quest for growth and expansion. With two majorexpansions of brownfield capacities at an investment ofRs.8000 crore completed, the Company is now gearing upfor 3rd phase expansion at a cost of Rs.6000 crore. This willfurther raise our aluminium capacity to 5.80 lakh tonnes andpower generation capacity to 1400 MW. Besides brownfieldexpansion, the Company is launching greenfield projects inIndia and abroad involving massive investment of more thanRs.40,000 crore.

Indeed, these are quite challenging tasks before us. In thenext 3-5 years, we have to put in our best efforts collectivelyto achieve success in these ambitious programmes.

Redefining business strategy

Our core competence has been primary aluminiummanufacturing. However, time has come to redefine ourbusiness strategy in viewof growing competition andchangingmarket dynamics. Accordingly, we have already framed ournew vision statement To be a reputed global company inmetals and energy sector.

A broad roadmap of business strategies up to the year 2020has been chalked out, which lays special emphasis on sectoraldiversification. The broad canvas includes forays into othermetals like copper, gold, zinc, nickel etc. and in energy sector. The Company has thus embarked upon ambitious path tomake the Company a true multinational.

I am sure, with broadpolicy framework and roadmap in place,we will be able to achieve the targeted turnover of overRs.25,000 crore by 2020.

India as a destinationfor aluminium smelting

Equipped as they are with low cost and efficiently run powerstations taking care of their smelters' entire electricityrequirements andas the country is endowedwith richbauxitedeposits, our production cost of aluminium figures in thelowest quartile amongworldproducers.Nalcohas theuniqueadvantageof ownership of hugehighquality bauxite depositsat a single site in Orissa's hills of Panchpatmali. The richmineral endowment plus unremitting efforts to acquire moredeposits both within and outside Orissa will keep Nalco aperennial exporter of alumina.

Nalco is working to give shape to three mega projectssimultaneously, includinga$4-billion500,000 tonnes smelteralongwith a captive1,250power complex at East Kalimantanin Indonesia. Nalco is also pursuing a project of similarconfiguration at Jharsuguda in Orissa. The promised accessto 80 million tonnes of bauxite deposits at Gudem and KRKonda in Andhra Pradesh will also lead Nalco to build a1.4-million-tonne alumina refinery in the state. For anymetalgroup raw material security is of cardinal importance. Nalcowill nodoubthaveenoughbauxite togoby for agoodnumberof years. The company's move to acquire bauxite and coalresources globally is seen in the context of its plans to buildlarge new smelters.

Hindalco has also got big things on its plate. If all its projectsget commissioned on revised schedule, then its smeltingcapacity will rise to 1.7 million tonnes from 500,000 tonnesand alumina refining capacity to 6.5 million tonnes from1.7 million tonnes by 2013. Meanwhile, Novelis acquisitionhas given Hindalco global leadership in that value addedsegmentwherepathbreaking technologies are in application.

Vedanta has arrived on the Indian aluminium scene muchlater than Hindalco and Nalco. While it has made up forthe lost time by gaining control of Balco and MadrasAluminium, Vedanta is aggressively building new capacitythrough greenfield andbrownfield routes. By 2013, it claims,it will have at least 2.6 million tonne smelting and 5 milliontonne alumina refinery capacity. Action of the three groupsis vindication that India due to its abundance of bauxiteand coal resources is the ideal place to smelt aluminium.

Aluminium World

Indian aluminium sector poised forstupendous growth

The Indian aluminium market is growing at a rapid pace andit is one metallic industry where India can emerge as apowerhouse within the next decade

According to industry sources, Indiawith total bauxite reservesof about 3 billion accounts for almost 7.5% of the world's65 billion bauxite reserves and is ranked sixth among thecountries with highest bauxite reserves. The worldwidealumina production competence is around58million tonnesin which India has 2.7 million tones, being the fifth largestproducer, after Australia, Guinea, Brazil and Jamaica.

Currently all the major Indian producers are trying to makegood the opportunity by expanding furiously. China, whichhas doubled its aluminium capacity over past half decade toaccount for more than a fifth of the world's output, is a netexporterof themetal. The Indianaluminiummarket is growingat a rapid pace, yet per capita consumption is extremely low:With over 7% growth per annum, one of the highest in theworld, the Indian aluminiummarket is booming. Evenbetter, sectors that extensively use aluminium are themselvesbooming, ensuring that this sector stays firmly on the growthpath for times to come. Total aluminium consumption inthe country is around 1,100 KT at present, which has grownsignificantly from 2002 level of 600 KT.

Though India's per capita consumption of aluminium standstoo low (under1kg) comparing to theper capita consumptionsof other countries like the US & Europe (25 to 30 kgs), Japan(15 kgs), Taiwan (10 kgs) and China (3 kgs), the demand isgrowing. In India, the industries that require aluminiummostlyincludepower (44%), consumer durables, transportation (10-12%), construction (17%) and packaging. With one of theworld's lowest per capita consumption, the country'saluminium demand is set to explode.
