St. Monica

Monica was born in 322 into a Christian family in Tegaste, in North Africa. Her parents selected a husband for her, a pagan named Patricius, who was a bad-tempered man and unfaithful to her. To add insult to injury, her mother, who taunted her, lived with them. But Mon-ica ignored the indignities they heaped on her, and practiced good works instead, giving to the poor and helping the sick while still caring for her family.

Monica and Patricius had three children. The eldest son, alt-hough a talented scholar, was a source of constant worry for Monica. She prayed constantly that he and her husband would someday join her in worship. Eventually her faith and kindness were partially rewarded: her husband and his mother were con-verted to Christianity. But Monica’s son seemed hopeless. He ran away from school, returned to the house and insulted Mon-ica. She forced him out, but took him back. Still, he strayed. He took a mistress, had a son, and ignored his mother’s protests.

Monica sought the help of her local bishop, who encouraged her, “It is not possible the son of so many tears should perish.” Eventually, Monica turned to the Bishop Ambrose in Milan, Italy, who brought her son to God.

Monica’s goal came to pass, in ways even she didn’t foresee. Her son became so strongly drawn to the faith to become one of the most famous saint of the Catholic Church, St. Augustine.

Fr. Salvatore “Jack” Giacomini, arrived in the United States from the Republic of San Marino at the age of 16 to begin his life as a Salesian of Don Bosco. His years at the St. Francis Orphanage in Watsonville, ranked among his best. Fr. Jack was Rector of the Salesian Community in Watsonville at the time of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Close to his heart were his many years as director of Camp St. Francis in Aptos. May Father Jack, rest in peace.

In the background is the St. Monica Primary School, in the village of Tardi, Sierra Leone.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The story of Job seems at first hearing to be an exten-sion of February’s gloom into the liturgy. The monu-mental suffering of a good man is so horrific that the laments of the front page of modern newspapers barely measure up. The whole sto-ry is not long to tell, but its resolution is of great com-fort. We can trace in its plot the stirrings of a belief

in an afterlife, and in God’s great power to right every wrong and raise human beings from suffering.

In the Gospel, we see the fulfillment of these longings in the hand of Jesus, grasping an ill woman by the hand and raising her up to vibrant life. Peter’s mother-in-law becomes her best self, attentive to her guests, providing hospitality, the warmth of her laughter, the delights of her kitchen. Last week, at Candlemas, candles were blessed, including baptismal candles for some not yet born. Today is a day to check the fragile flame of your own baptismal candle. Against February’s customary lethargy, its background whines and ailments, the liturgy summons us to life, grasps us by the hand, and sends us to serve in Christ’s name. —James Field, Copyright © J. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

El 11 de febrero, 1858 la

Virgen María se apareció a

tres niños franceses del

pueblito de Lourdes. Allí

brotaron aguas milagrosas

con el poder de sanar enfer-

mos.

entregarnos a Dios?

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos‑Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
