August 25th, 2019 - Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
This Weekend’s Readings
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 117:1-2
Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13
Gospel: Luke 13:22-30
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “I am the way, the truth and the life, says the Lord;
no one comes to the Father, except through me.” - John 14:6
21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME... ENTERING THE KINGDOM OF GOD
Have you ever seen a celebrity? Have you ever met a political representative? Did the encounter leave you with new-
found acting or musical abilities? Did it give you a grasp of the intricacies of the latest city ordinance or controversial
law? Talents, expertise, and skill are hard-won traits, not rewards that spread by contact. Our faith is also not so easy.
"We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets!" In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus notes that it requires
moral strength to enter the kingdom of God. It's not mere proximity to righteousness that saves. Rubbing elbows with
the righteous is not the same as being truly holy ourselves. Unfortunately, we can have this attitude in many areas. It's
easy to see who may seem "first" in the eyes of the world. This occurs in our workplaces and among our public
figures. It can also happen in our schools, local parishes, and the larger Church. For some of us, the temptation to have
the popularity and prestige rub off on us can be fairly strong. If only we are in the right place with the right people,
surely others will associate us with what they possess!
But salvation is worked out in each individual life. It is our task not merely to show up, but to be transformed. And the
truly transformed may not be everyone we expect. "People will come from the east and the west and from the north
and the south... some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last." Some who seem first in reputation
now may be last in the kingdom of God. Others who appear now on the furthest fringes of society — but better imitate
the lowly holiness of Jesus — will be first in his kingdom. What are your concerns? Proximity and reputation? Or
prayerful righteousness?

ST. IGNATIUS FOOD PANTRY — UPDATE
The Christian Service Commission launched the St. Ignatius Food Pantry on Sunday, December
18th, 2016. This service to the needy is one of the corporal of works of mercy.
Thank you to all those who have supported! This Ministry has already helped about 400 deserving
persons in the Cayman community!
We are encouraging everyone to be part of this great mercy initiative by donating food and other
non-perishable items so that the Food Pantry can remain fully stocked. In this regard, the following
food items are required and can be dropped off at the Church after Mass or the Church Office at any time:
• Personal items: Bath soap, hand soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, deodorant, body lotion, other toiletries, etc.
• Drinks: Tea, coffee, cocoa, condensed milk, coffee mate, canned or box juices – apple, pineapple, mixed, etc.
• Carbohydrates: Rice, noodles, 2 lb. flour, cornmeal, oats, pasta, etc.
• Protein: Canned goods including sardines, corned beef, spam, tuna, sausage, mackerel, pork & beans, assorted dried
beans, jars of peanut butter, etc. Canned veggies are always appreciated.
• Fruit: Canned fruits, dried fruits, etc.
• Other Items: Cooking oil (24 oz), 2 lb. sugar, salt, black pepper, corn meal, assorted dried seasonings/spices, jams,
detergent, biscuits, crackers, low sugar (healthy) cereals, school snacks, shopping bags etc.

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
ST. IGNATIUS/DOROTHY RICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND —
STARTING OUR 23RD YEAR ASSISTING FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL TUITION!
The St. Ignatius/Dorothy Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund assists families who
are not able to afford the full tuition at St. Ignatius School (which averages about
$9500 per year). Each year we help to keep children in our school who otherwise
couldn’t afford a Catholic Education. Over the past 22 years we have assisted
more than 180 children from over 120 families!
The average child in this programme receives about $200-$300 per month off the
fees, paid by the scholarship fund (directly to the school bursar), while the
child’s family pays the rest.
In return for the help, the families actively contribute to the school and parish in a variety of ways (helping out with
fundraisers, chaperoning school trips, cleaning the grounds, assisting at sports days, serving on committees, etc.).
Comments from past recipients:
“If we did not get this support, there is no way our children would be able to stay at St. Ignatius Catholic School.”
“A Catholic education for our children is so important to us. We are extremely grateful for the scholarship assistance.”
How you can help:
• Donation envelopes are available at the front entrance of St. Ignatius Church or in the church office. Donations can
be dropped in the collection, sent in by mail or dropped off at the church office. If paying by cheque, please make
your donations payable to: ST. IGNATIUS, and in the memo, please indicate “Scholarship Fund”.
• On-line transfers can be done through Butterfield Bank… contact May in the parish office for details.
• Perhaps your company would like to assist with regular contributions OR a one-off donation?
Please consider the Scholarship Fund from time to time when doing your charitable work throughout the year!
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund during recent months and during the past several years!
For further information, please contact Jeremy Rice in the Parish Office or via e-mail: [email protected].
