August 26th, 2018 - Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
From Fr. Suresh
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19, 20-21
Second Reading: Ephesians 5:21-32
Gospel: John 6:60-69
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the
words of everlasting life. - John 6:63c, 68c
21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME... DO YOU HAVE COMPLETE FAITH IN JESUS? "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" The words of Jesus' disciples in today's Gospel must sound familiar. At some
point in our lives, you and I have said it about some article of our faith. Christianity makes firm demands on our ethical
behavior and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many disciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus' words in the
Bread of Life Discourse. Not all of them, however, had the same reaction.
When the disciples question Jesus' teaching, he confirms its truth. "The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life."
For some, Jesus' reassurance was not enough. These disciples do not question Jesus further or wrestle with their lack of
understanding. The mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. "Many of his disciples returned to their for-
mer way of life and no longer accompanied him." For them, their doubt proves too much.
Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts as well. Peter answers. "Master, to whom shall
we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of
God." Notice this is not a confession of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words
may still confuse them, but they believe the One who said them.
In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillusionment in our Christian faith. The same choice available to the
disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understanding? Will you stay or will
you go? What do you do with your doubt?

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
ST. IGNATIUS/DOROTHY RICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND —
STARTING OUR 22ND YEAR ASSISTING FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL TUITION!
The St. Ignatius/Dorothy Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund assists families who
are not able to afford the full tuition at St. Ignatius School (which averages
about $9500 per year). Each year we help to keep children in our school who
otherwise couldn’t afford a Catholic Education. Over the past 21 years we have
assisted nearly 180 children from over 120 families!
The average child in this programme receives about $200-$300 per month off the
fees, paid by the scholarship fund (directly to the school bursar), while the
child’s family pays the rest.
In return for the help, the families actively contribute to the school and parish in a variety of ways (helping out with
fundraisers, chaperoning school trips, cleaning the grounds, assisting at sports days, serving on committees, etc.).
Comments from past recipients:
“If we did not get this support, there is no way our children would be able to stay at St. Ignatius Catholic School.”
“A Catholic education for our children is so important to us. We are extremely grateful for the scholarship assistance.”
How you can help:
• Donation envelopes are available at the front entrance of St. Ignatius Church or in the church office. Donations can
be dropped in the collection, sent in by mail or dropped off at the church office. If paying by cheque, please make
your donations payable to: ST. IGNATIUS, and in the memo, please indicate “Scholarship Fund”.
• On-line transfers can be done through Butterfield Bank… contact May in the parish office for details.
• Perhaps your company would like to assist with regular contributions OR a one-off donation?
Please consider the Scholarship Fund from time to time when doing your charitable work throughout the year!
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund during recent months and during the past several years!
For further information, please contact Jeremy Rice in the Parish Office or via e-mail: [email protected].
