Second Sunday Of Lent March 17, 2019

Thank You from Your St. Vincent de Paul Society Thank you to everyone who has been do-nating to our work of helping neighbors in need, either through the use of your monthly blue envelopes, memorials, trib-utes, non-perishable food donations in the containers at the entrances to church, and your prayers. Your continuing gener-osity is always appreciated, both by our members and the neighbors we serve. We wish you all a blessed Lenten sea-son.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, many may have failed in Lenten disci-pline to some measure or another: the daily dough-nut is simply too alluring, or a furtive puff on a cig-arette irresistible. There is meaning even in the fail-ure, though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the power of Lent is that we do it together, and although individuals decide on differ-ent ways to keep it, it is fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we get up, we keep moving. The desire to “give something up” for Lent is an ageold impulse in the Christian heart. We get bet-ter at it over the years, and move more deeply into the meaning and message of acts of sacrifice; so there is no shame in stumbling, as long as we are not discouraged by the failure and give up. We are clearing space in our lives, after all, and some of the things we desire to give up are worth rooting out completely anyway. What do we do with the space we have cleared out by our sacrifice? The Lenten question of giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our re-sponse to Christ’s embrace of us in love: “What are you taking on for Easter?”

STAND FIRM IN THE LORD It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the destruction of humanity, and political follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never changes. Paul says, “Many . . . conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruction . . . Their minds are occupied with earthly things” (Philippians 3:18, 19). The result is the destruction of innocent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, “our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (3:20). He will “change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body” (3:21). Note that he says “body” rather than “bodies.” He is talking about the whole community of believers, who, following the example of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God. So “stand firm in the Lord” (4:1). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive!‐ – The Apostles actually hear God speak to them in today’s Gospel. The excit‐

ing part for us is that God’s message is not just for the Apostles. It is for each and every one of us as

well. We have been instructed by God, “This is My chosen Son, listen to Him.” This was not framed in the form of a request. This was an instruction. Most of us have difficulty hearing Jesus’s voice, and many would ask, “How do I even do that?” We will never

hear the voice of Jesus if we don’t listen for it or if we do all the talking during our prayer time. Prayer is

meant to be a conversation and in a conversation we are challenged to balance the amount of time we

speak with the amount of time we listen. The easiest way to hear Jesus speak to us is through the Scrip‐tures, but we can also hear Him through others,

through creation, through music, etc. The most im‐portant part of this is the actual listening. “Jesus, dur‐

ing this Lenten journey please help us to open our hearts and minds so that we can hear Your voice and listen to what You are saying to us. Then please give us the courage to follow any directions you give us.

Amen”

Got Old or Broken Jewelry? During the weeks of Lent, we will be collecting old or broken jewelry to support Monarch4Freedom, an organization that helps rescue victims of human trafficking. The old and/or broken jewelry is fashioned into saleable jewelry, and the proceeds are used to provide programs and housing for women who are rescued from trafficking. Last year, more than 100 women and girls (some as young as 12 years old) were helped, and the sale of the jewelry raised over $160,000. These funds are also used to support a safe house in North County for the rescued victims. There will be a box in the vestibule just waiting for your generous dona-tions. Now is a good time to clean out all that old costume jewelry that you don’t wear and put it to good use! Thank you in advance for your help. Learn more about this organization at www.monarchjewelry.org.
