FIRST STEPS11TH SEPTEMBER 2019TAKING CARE OF GOD’S

WORLD

Our naughty little sheep is beginning to noticethat the mornings are getting darker. Soon it willbe dark when he gets up. He’s not lookingforward to that, he tells me. It is rather a greymorning though he’s hoping that the sun willshine for our First Steps service this afternoon. It is looking slightly brighter when our naughtylittle sheep, his friends and I walk up to church.Linda arrives at about the same time and ournaughty little sheep and his friends rush to theirusual places as Linda and I begin to get thingsready for our little service. Jan and Anne sooncome along to help too. When everything isready we wait patiently to see if anyone will joinus. Finally Mum Emma with Abigail and Rupertarrive to keep us company closely followed byAuntie Lisa. A very small but select crowd andwe are very pleased to see them. Abigail iswearing very pretty pink rabbit shoes. Do theymake them for big lady feet, I wonder? I wouldlike some, too. When everyone is settled with jingle bells at theready, we light our candles and begin ourservice. Our glittery dragon is with us today. Hewasn’t able to come to the Teddy Bears’ Picnicbecause the weather was very wet and dragonsand wet weather don’t really go together. Ournaughty little sheep thinks that he may be takinga bit of a chance today, so we shall see! We’rethinking about how we should take care of God’sworld. It is a precious gift, isn’t it? And we reallyshould look after it the best way that we can. Wesing about going to the park and having a funtime, and being very careful to tidy up afterwardsif we have a picnic. And we do love a picnic, don’twe? Abigail is a lively happy little girl and sheloves joining in as we sing some of our favourite

songs. When we sing about frogs she does somewonderful hopping. We remember that Audrey Hedgehog is gettingbig and fat, eating lots of snails and slugs andworms, so that she can soon go to sleep, snugin her leaf house for the winter, ready to wakeup again when springtime comes. We’ll miss her, won’t we? Abigail tells me that she is very carefulwhen she picks up snails because they havetheir houses on their backs. We think how funnyit must be to have your house on your back!Rupert is a very smiley, happy boy today, havinga lovely time jingling his jingle bells. Oh what fun!We sing about Jesus’ love for us, and about thebeautiful world that God has created for us, withrivers and mountains and twinkly stars in thenight time sky. Soon it is time to gather all ourprayers into the prayer that Jesus taught us, TheLord’s Prayer. Then we blow out our candles andoff we go into the hall for our refreshments. Ournaughty little sheepand his friends are outthere quick as a flashand then they maket h e m s e l v e scomfortable so thatthey can keep aneye on Abigail andRupert.I know we havebeen a small butselect group todaybut we have had alovely time togetherand the children havebeen a delight. Wehope that they will comealong for our next FirstSteps service on 9thOctober when maybe afew more will join us.GodBlessRosemary Austin

Readings fromthe OldTestament

As we had recently introduced a readingfrom the Old Testament into our 10amservice I preached on this change on 1st

September. Several people subsequentlysuggested that I should put this into the magazine. As the full sermon would take up too much space, here is a shortened version.

“I want us to test our imaginations a little. Let’s suppose, fora moment, that Jesus has joined us in our congregationhere today. Which parts of our service do you think he mightrecognise, might feel most at home with? Certainly, hewould recognise much of the prayer of consecration – afterall, we use his own words, the words he used whencelebrating that last Passover with his disciples. He wouldsurely, too, echo the words of the Lord’s Prayer, the prayerhe used to teach his disciples and us how to pray. And inour gospel reading he would recognise the account of histeaching and his earthly ministry. But there remains onepart of our service with which he would be familiar on aday-to-day basis and which he would know almost by heart– and that is, of course, our reading from the Old Testament. It is five Sundays since we introduced these readings andI just want to make a few comments.

The Old Testament fulfils many roles and I’m going to touch, just briefly, on four of them. In the first place it contains ahistorical account of the founding of the Jewish nation, itsstruggles, its suffering and its eventual settlement in thepromised land.

History is very important in placing events in context. Forexample, however important it might be to study the eventsof the first and second world wars, history helps usunderstand the origins of those conflicts. No teacher woulddream of ignoring everything which happened before theprecise dates on which war was declared. In much the sameway the Old Testament forms a backdrop against which wecan better understand the New Testament, setting out God’splans, purposes and promises which he fulfils with thecoming of the Messiah.

My second point is the importance of the Old Testament in

what it says about that promised Messiah, especially in thewritings of the prophets and particularly Isaiah. The NewTestament writers often conclude their accounts of someevent in Jesus’s life with the words, “in accordance with theScriptures.” When we recite the Nicene Creed as part of ourcommunion service, we use the words, “on the third day herose again, in accordance with the Scriptures.” Jesus sawthe Old Testament as referring to himself and theprophecies being fulfilled in him.

My third point is that much of the teaching that we find inthe New Testament is built on the framework supplied bythe Old. We know from the Gospels that Jesus was wellversed in the Old Testament writings, which was just as wellbecause time and again his enemies tried to trip him up byreferring to some law or other that they fancied he wasbreaking and he was quick to put them right and challengetheir hypocrisy. Jesus was conscious that many of thesestrict legalistic observances were relevant to times long pastand not to the age into which he was born so he interpretedthem according to the needs of the day. There is surely astrong message here for those who, even in our own dayand age, try to quote some of the Old Testament laws to fittheir own bigoted views on life.

My final point is that the Old Testament is great writing inits own right. It contains stories like Noah and the flood,David and Goliath, Pharaoh’s army being drowned chasingthe Israelites through the Red Sea and many more. It hasgreat poetry, for example in the Psalms and in the Song ofSongs. And, as someone once remarked aboutShakespeare, it is full of quotations, many of which havepassed into common, everyday use. Here are just a few ofthe dozens you can find by searching online: “bite the dust, the blind leading the blind, by the skin of your teeth, fly inthe ointment, nothing but skin and bones, rise and shine, sign of the times, twinkling of an eye, wits end and thewriting on the wall.” The Old Testament, too, has influencedgreat poetry, like Paradise Lost; music, like Hayden’s “TheCreation” and the coronation anthem “Zadok the Priest”;masterpieces of art and sculpture like Michelangelo’s Davidand, in our own day, “Joseph and the amazing technicolourdream coat.” In the world of pop, too, we have Boney M’s“By the rivers of Babylon” and “turn, turn, turn,” by the Byrds- but perhaps I’m showing my age with those last two.

Despite what some might think, introducing Old Testamentreadings into our liturgy was not some sadistic move toconfuse readers faced with some of those unpronounceableand tongue twisting names which occur in its pages. Thereis a lot more to the Old Testament than meets the eye.”
