Dear Friends, I have often complained about how the various media, Television, Newspapers and Radio seem to be obsessed with bad news. When I watch the breakfast programme on TV in the morning, I usually wind up utterly depressed by the preponderance of negative items compared with the positive ones. I am more than happy to report that there was a really heart-warming story recently. A toddler was diagnosed as having a mal-functioning liver. The only way forward was to have a transplant but, of course, there was the usual problem of finding a donor whose liver would not be rejected. There was great difficulty in finding one who was suitable until the child’s father volunteered to donate part of his. It seems that unlike kidney transplants where each person has two to begin with and can manage perfectly well with only one, the liver is different. The liver is the only organ which can regenerate and so, removing part of the father’s liver would not be lethal to him and the part which was implanted in the child would regenerate nicely. Great! Now for the ‘BUT’. The father would have to undergo 9 hours of surgery as his part of the process. The child’s surgery would not be so gruelling but still an ordeal for a youngster. To cut the story short, all went well and the boy is making lovely progress and the father can feel proud of what he has done for his child. Isn’t it great to hear a story with a happy ending such as this? Of course there must be many more instances of parents making sacrifices for their children by donating organs or by many other means which we do not get to hear about. Then there are instances of people sacrificing their lives in order that others might live. There were many examples during wartime and the famous fictional one in “A Tale of Two Cities”. I am sure that we would all applaud these acts of self-denial but how do we feel about someone who sacrifices a third person’s life to save others? What would we say in such a case as this? There have been many quoted instances of people who could stand to be tortured themselves but would give in immediately if the torturers threatened to turn their attentions to someone near and dear to him. With these thoughts in mind, consider God’s motivation in giving his only Son, Jesus Christ to endure humiliation, torture and, ultimately, an agonising form of execution for us. God must truly love the world if he was prepared to make this sacrifice in order to save it. Let us remember this at Eastertide and accept gladly what God has given us.

Yours sincerely Eric Sparks

From the Ministry

“Did you catch the Sermon on the Mount?”

I wonder how well the teaching of Jesus was heard by each person as he spoke to them, and particularly when he was outside addressing the multitudes. As background, let’s consider two churches we have visited - firstly, St Mary’s - the Anglican Parish Church of the delightful North Yorkshire town of Whitby, and then the Church of the Beatitudes near Tabgha, overlooking the Sea of Galilee.

St Mary’s is situated high on the East Cliff and can be accessed by 199 steps from the lower town as well as by road. It is adjacent to the ruined Whitby Abbey, and both are well worth a visit. The church is an amazing building which has been extended over the years with galleries, and can seat up to 2000 people. The triple-decker pulpit must certainly help project a voice effectively to the congregation.

However, this was not enough for the wife of a Victorian priest - at the back of the pulpit, parts of an ear trumpet device can still be seen fitted. This was so that this Rector’s wife, who was partly deaf, could hear the sermon given by her husband. My feeling is that Jesus must have had a loud voice and conclude that inside a building he would be heard well. These days many larger churches have sound systems installed, including ‘t-loop’ for those hard of hearing with hearing aids.

The Church of the Beatitudes is built on the site of where Jesus delivered his ‘Sermon on the Mount.’ This is considered to have been delivered early in his ministry, when he was followed around by a ‘multitude’ of people – large crowds, amounting to

thousands, wherever he went. But did everyone in these crowds catch every word he said?

An optimist is one who thinks that when his shoes wear out he will be back on his feet.

The Monty Python film of 1979 ‘The Life of Brian’ contains a scene

focussing on a group of people some distance away, listening to the Beatitudes, and not always catching what was said. The script: Spectator I: I think it was "Blessed are the cheesemakers". Mrs. Gregory: Aha, what's so special about the cheesemakers? Gregory: Well, obviously it's not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products. (Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.) Some serious research has been done on how well crowds would have heard non-amplified addresses and it’s apparently more than you might think. First of all, the researchers concluded that it helps a good deal if the subject matter is known by the listeners.

With my poor hearing, knowing the subject matter is something that I can confirm makes a significant difference. The researchers also noted that famous speakers had louder voices than most; also some chose to speak in bursts of 4 or 5 key words. Given calm weather conditions (and, going back in time, there was none of the mechanical background noise we have today) with a densely packed crowd, they concluded that, on average, some thousands could hear about 30% of what was spoken and their minds filled in the rest. When in training, I was given guidance on how to put together a sermon, and one rule was to repeat a key point three times... There would have been an oral tradition to carry the word of Jesus from person to person (perhaps this happened, live, in a large crowd?).

Ultimately, the Beatitudes and related teaching of Jesus

were written down by Matthew, which we can read in the Bible. As an aside, I would recommend at least an annotated Bible which has footnotes and cross-references to related passages. If you really want to go more deeply into the subject, then also purchase a Bible Commentary.

Finally, if for whatever reason, ambient noise levels, microphone problems......you only catch some of a sermon being delivered locally, and the subject particularly interests you, then why not ask for a copy that you can read through at your leisure.

Message from Anthony

Sunday 13th March 2016

The season of Lent, and in particular the journey through Holy Week to Easter, reminds us all of the compelling nature of God's call and of the promise that although all will be well, there are also sure to be difficult days along the way.

Today is one such day for me, as I have been offered an

appointment as Priest-in-Charge of the Benefice of Laleston with Merthyr Mawr and Penyfai, and after reflective and prayerful consideration, I have accepted this offer.

I'm sure that this news will be a surprise for many of you,

especially coming so soon after Huw's departure. However, having wrestled, reflected and prayed over the things to which I'm now sure I'm being called, whenever I have placed matters in God's hands, the answer has been both clear and surprising. As such, both Elaine and I have come to see that God is truly drawing us into a new chapter in life and Ministry. -

- A decision on when I will leave our Benefice is still to be made,

but whenever it is decided that I should start my new post, I can say without question that the last five years with you have been an extraordinary journey. I have been privileged to be able to support Huw in his leadership of the Benefice and I have also been honoured, blessed and humbled to serve, be served, walk, learn, grow and deepen my faith alongside you.

The sending out of people who have learned and grown in faith is

very much in the DNA of Llanilltud Fawr, but in the times between now and my leaving, I believe there is also a wonderful chance for us to embrace the excitement and freshness of both the present challenge and what lies beyond, but also to celebrate together the journey we have shared.

I pray that in the coming months we will continue to delight in

the love and companionship we have found in one another and that our journey through Easter and into the season of the spirit, will be blessed by the God who is interwoven into all things. Yours faithfully in Jesus' love,

Anthony

Flautissimo

This is a friendly and enthusiastic group of around 40 flute players of all ages drawn from all over Hampshire that meets regularly to rehearse exciting repertoire to a high standard for public performances. We are known as a flute orchestra as our group produces a complex and attractive sound using a full range of the members of the flute family, from the piccolo and concert flute to the less familiar alto, bass, and contrabass flutes.

Our flute choirs perform a range of concerts every year in a variety

of settings: from our regular performance at the Southampton Art Gallery as part of the Music in the City festival in the autumn, participation by invitation in regional concert series, performing at Winchester Cathedral's Christmas Market, and a summer bandstand performance in Romsey, along with taking smaller groups to perform at open gardens, private and corporate events and the Southampton Mela. These are interspersed with formal and informal concerts with other groups at local churches. As well as local performances, the group regularly perform at BFS International Conventions, and have toured to Edinburgh, Cornwall, and Dublin. In Spring 2016 we shall tour to Wales.

Following the successful tour to Dublin last year, the Southampton Flute Group 'Flautissimo' is this year visiting Wales. It is combining with the Cardiff Flute Ensemble to visit and play at various venues e.g. St Fagan's. The musicians are then coming to St Illtud's to be shown round and will give a short free concert. The group expressed a wish to hear some Welsh songs and so Church Choir & Friends will sing three items during the concert. Please come at 7pm on 30th April and give 'Flautissimo' a very warm welcome.

I am an idealist. I don’t know where I’m going but I’m on the way.

The induction of the Reverend Huw Butler into the Parishes of Rossett, Llay and Isycoed

On a chilly cloudy 6th March some of us were lucky enough to be

able to make the journey up to the diocese of St Asaph to join in the induction service, the beautiful church in Rossett even has its own car park, a luxury we cannot boast at any of our churches. In all, 11 of us attended and were given a wonderful welcome before being led down to the second pew from the front, in the pew behind us sat members of the congregation from his last North Walian parish.

The Right Reverend Gregory Cameron, Bishop of St Asaph

officiated the service and welcomed everyone who had travelled from near and far – he originated in South Wales but ‘migrated’ to North Wales just like Huw had done before, but then came back down to South Wales to our Benefice only to travel back up north – the Bishop mentioned that he hoped Huw was now settled for good. Refreshments following the service were served just along the road from the church in the church/village hall.

The following morning, Reverend David Brunning, Gail and Gareth

Davies all attended the 9.15am service in Rossett church, while Jodie Taylor, Rita Lewis and Marlene Wheeldon attended the 11.00am service in Llay (which is where Huw and Pat will be living). The Church is just a few doors away from their house, the entrance to the school, a resource centre and the Church Hall dividing his house from the Church… no excuses for being late!! What a wonderful welcome we received from the people in Llay who had no idea they were having visitors from the South, the look on Huws’ face when he saw us sitting there – just when he thought he had got rid of us for good!!. It was hard to leave but after farewells to both Huw and Pat, and the people of his new parishes, it was time to ‘hit the road’ and travel home.

Jodie Taylor

If is important to you, you will find a way. If not, you will find an excuse.

Huw’s Induction

The Hymn Sheet from Huw’s Induction Service makes interesting reading and the photographs of the three churches in the Benefice are similarly worthy of note. Here they are:

1 Mi glywaf dyner lais yn galw arnaf fi,

I ddod a golchi meiau i gyd yn afon Calfari. 2 Lord who in Thy perfect wisdom

Times and seasons dost arrange. 3 From heaven you came helpless babe Entered our world, your glory veiled

4 Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine,

and visit it with thine own ardour glowing.

If you take too long deciding what to do with your life, you’ll find that you have done it.

Mothers’ Union

The Mothers’ Union meeting held on Wednesday 2nd March was slightly depleted in numbers due to the amount of colds and flu going around. Those able to attend the evening had a very good evening with the Reverend Hilary Collins leading the members in the Eucharist before joining them at the meeting. Tyann Leonard chaired the evening, and after all the business of the night was completed Canon Collins led the members in Lent reflections. Members were encouraged to support the various services held around the Benefice during Holy Week. Anyone who is interested in joining us should come along on the first Wednesday of the month at 7pm or contact Jodie Taylor on 01446 794103

********* Vale of Glamorgan Libraries – Home Borrower Service

You may not know that under some circumstances we are able to deliver library books to people at home and we always welcome new volunteers to help us provide this service.

Vale of Glamorgan Libraries run a Home Library Service where volunteers will deliver books to people in their own homes. This free service is for anyone who can no longer get out of the house to visit a library themselves because of disability or mobility issues. Every four weeks a volunteer will drop off a bag of books for the reader and collect the previous month’s books.

The volunteer can bring books in a number of formats – ordinary print, large print or talking books on CD. As the reader, all you need to do is give the volunteer an idea of the kind of books you like – books by a particular author, for example, or historical, crime, romances or non-fiction – the choice is yours!

If you would like to help us deliver the service or if you think this service might be just what you need or if you know of someone who could benefit from it, please call Melanie Weeks on 01446 773941 for more information. www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/libraries If you want to be a volunteer helper to the Library Service, this

could be for you but don’t forget that there are plenty of other jobs in

the church and elsewhere which are looking for help.

Harnessing Energy A runner bean, of little worth, Was planted in my patch of earth; It told a parable to me, A tale of Harnessed Energy. Each passing day, some power was freed To give the growth the plant would need. First, gentle urge, to split the skin; More, as the shoot pushed from within; Still more, as instinct made it climb To find support. Until in time The scarlet blossom could be seen, No oil. No electricity. No gas. No coal. Yet energy Had powered the cycle Nature planned, Sufficient for the plant’s demand. And as the Summer passed, the bean Was storing power for next year’s scene. Each ripening seed was silently Harnessing future energy. No smell. No noise. No fumes. No fuss. No dust. No waste to harass us. Just gently harnessing the store That would next season’s growth ensure. Man rules the air, and conquers space, Splits atoms, bridges gulfs; the race For power, more power, his constant need. And yet the smallest humblest seed Has beaten Man, as all may see, In Harnessing its Energy.

Know the true value of time; snatch, seize and enjoy every moment of it.

Toddler Church

The Toddlers spent the last few weeks of the term learning about the Easter Story. We told them a different part each week, all the way from Jesus is King on Palm Sunday, to Thomas doubting it really was Jesus after he had risen. We've had fun painting with our hands and feet, drawing with candles, and experimenting with different textures. Toddler Church resumes after Easter on the 13th April, when we'll be beginning to look at some of the stories of the adventures God's followers had in the New Testament.

We meet in the West Church in St Illtud’s every Wednesday in term time from 1.30-3pm, you can tell we're starting because you'll hear the Toddlers ringing the bell! We tell stories, sing songs, make crafts, eat biscuits and play! Any pre-school age children are welcome to come along with their carers.

St Athan Our main event in St Athan in March was our

St David's Day lunch on the 1st. About 20 of us tucked into some leek soup with lots of bread on the side, and the all-important Welsh Cakes! We also tested out our Welsh with some singing, and the English and Irish contingent got very confused! Fortunately, we still raised £105 which we split between Traidcraft and Church funds.

We welcomed in Lent with pancakes at our March Breakfast club, and the more traditional

Ashing at our midweek Eucharist on Ash Wednesday. At the time of writing we're looking forward to Holy Week, with our Passover Supper on Maundy Thursday, and joining with the Methodist Church for the Children's Activities and later Reflective Service on Good Friday.

Marathon Training Thank you to everyone who has

sponsored us so far as we prepare to run the London Marathon for the Lullaby Trust. At the time of writing our fundraising had reached £4,000, so we're very close to our £5,000 target; and distance wise, we've clocked up to 15 miles- still a little way to go! We've been overwhelmed by the support we've received, both financially and all the practical advice on running in general, and running a marathon in particular- I'm still indebted to Anthony for the suggestion of eating jelly babies on a long run!

If anyone would still like to sponsor us, there are sponsorship forms at the back of all the churches, and I'll be collecting in any money following the race on the 24th April. It may take a little while though, as I'm not convinced I'm going to be moving very fast afterwards! Also, if anyone finds themselves in Swansea at the weekends, we are holding a Charity Night at Swansea Dockers Club in St Thomas, on the 9th April at 7pm. Tickets are £5, and anyone who ventures that far would be more than welcome!

Colin Pascoe Church Organist

Each of us is born to bear his or her particular fruit. For this end, God has blessed each of us with different talents. However, while God has seen to it that each of his children are endowed with some talents, it is obvious that he gives special talents to some. Colin is an example of this. Colin was a gifted musician. He served this church for many years as our organist and was a faithful servant here. Colin was a very good organist; indeed, Colin was of the few organists who was granted the privilege of playing the cathedral organ in Llandaff. He understood the organ here at St Illtud’s and knew it’s foibles, he managed to keep it going on many occasions when it seemed to be on its way to that great organ graveyard in the sky. He often spent hours trying one thing after another when everything seemed to have failed, and he was proud of his success in dealing with its idiosyncrasies.

It was not just this organ. He kept a weather eye on several of the organs in the Benefice and, I have to admit the organ in the church in Llanmaes has never really sounded the same since it benefitted from his master touch. Of course being a church organist I think it fair to say that he did not always see eye to eye with the various incumbents he served with. Colin was not a great fan of modern music. He hated Mission Praise with a vengeance and for Colin, church music fell into a fatal decline round about the year 1800.

He was very proud to receive the Archbishop’s medal in recognition of his long and faithful service to the church. He was presented with the medal by the Archbishop of Wales at a special service in St David’s Cathedral and meant so much to Colin. It was well deserved.

Colin was also a very talented artist with a great eye for detail and many of his beautiful paintings hung on the walls of his home in Rhoose. One of his paintings, a copy of an engraving of a local windmill, provided the cover for volume 10 of the “Llantwit Major. Aspects of its History” which was published by the local History Society.

Talents are not delivered into our hands ready-made and fit for use. In fact, the first thing we have to do is discover our talents. The

They say that the universe is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons but don’t forget the morons.

16

Page 19: Parish News Parish News - Llanilltud · Private Hire Highly Recommended Local Family Garage Any work. Any make. Any Model Diagnostics, servicing, mot, repairs etc. Local courtesy

second thing is to develop them. It is one thing to be given a special talent. It is quite another thing to make full use of that talent; Colin was given many talents and he made full use of his gifts. He worked hard at developing his skills and used them for the enrichment of others. He had been a teacher for several years but as his mother became ill, he took a job as a scientist at RAF St Athan, which enabled him to care for her and he continued to work there for a number of years.

He had a great interest in local history and wrote a number of well-researched and fascinating articles in the Parish Magazine about the history of the local churches, providing a wealth of detail about these ancient parishes. Colin was undoubtedly a very gifted and intelligent man. He was also, basically, quite a shy man who was not always easy to get along with. He was a very private person and probably closest to his dog. He loved his various dogs and took them with him everywhere he went. He was also extremely close to his mother and he cared for her devotedly during her declining years and after her death he was lonely but struggled to pick up the threads again. He found solace in his music and painting.

During the last 18 months as his health declined, he became a resident at the Waverley Care Home in Penarth where he was wonderfully cared for until his death on 27th February. Colin’s family are very grateful for the care and attention he received there.

When someone has achieved so much, there is a sense of sorrow at their death. Life is God’s gift to us; what we do with our life is our gift to God. Colin was a devout Christian and valuable servant to this church. We pray that at the last he heard those wonderful words “Well done thou good and faithful servant.”

Colin Pascoe was one of our Church Organists at St Illtud’s from 1967 to 2011 and was a talented and well respected musician. He died on 27th February and at his funeral on 11th March, Sue Moll delivered this eulogy. I reprint it here as no doubt there are other people besides myself who are not previously aware of the man’s talents. Ed

Llantwit Major Friends of Children in Distress Sponsored Walk across the new Second Severn Crossing 12th May 1996

Do you remember this walk?

Do you recognise the people in this photo?

Were you one of the 50 people from Llantwit Major that took part?

Were you one of the many people that sponsored the walkers?

Children in Distress was formed in response to the need seen in

Romania with the fall of the dictator Ceausescu when the desperate plight of sick orphaned children was seen for the first time. The Revd Dr John Walmsley was in a hospital at the side of a baby who died of AIDS, a baby who had no family with him at all. Dr John felt God calling him to respond, to ensure that as best as he could that no child should die unloved and unwanted. This calling led to the formation of the charity, the building of a hospice within a year, the sending out of aid and medical staff, and fund-raising in this country to support it.

The enemies of freedom do not argue; they shout and they shoot.

There are times when silence can be more musical than any song.

Llantwit Major Friends of Children in Distress Following a visit by the Revd Dr John Walmsley, who gave a talk at

the West House and preached at St Illtud’s Church, the Llantwit Major Friends of Children in Distress was formed.

We raised funds to send a lorry out to Romania, driven by Eddie Bowen, who was Mayor at the time, and a colleague from the RAF. An empty shop in the Precinct was used to collect goods, and in April 1992, the 32-ton lorry was waved off as it began its difficult journey. Various fund-raising activities followed. A stall was held at the Victorian Fair every other year, selling Romanian goods; there were various social evenings – a Country and Western at Llantwit Major Primary School springs to mind; and a John Wesley weekend. The Revd Dawn Hellard, curate in Llantwit Major, and Margaret Greenwood went to see St Laurence’s Hospice, Cernavoda, Romania, and to help there, and were able to return to speak at first hand.

Then, when the new Second Bridge was to be opened in May 1996, there was the opportunity for charities to take part in a walk across the Bridge – and so we did and raised over £2000.

Over 10 years ago, Philip and I moved from Llantwit Major to St Brides Major, where Philip was priest in charge. People from St Brides enjoyed coming to Llantwit to take part in the Walk, but last year we decided to hold the Walk in St Brides Major. Though Philip has now retired and we are back in Llantwit Major, we have decided to continue with the walk from St Brides Major Church Hall over the Common to Southerndown and returning through the fields. When the Revd Dr John Walmsley started Children in Distress over 20 years ago the aim was “to cure sometimes, to help often, to comfort always”. The aim today is still the same. The need is still there, as Paul Kubaszky, Children in Romanian Director, writes:

“Those who are familiar with the reality of Romania today will easily and fully understand why our children, those with special needs, struggle for their meagre rights and still cling to the help from outside Romania, the help that they can’t get here in their home country – a country in which, despite membership of the European Union, conditions of life are hardly comparable with elsewhere in the Union.”

We hope that Llantwit walkers would like to join us as there no plans to hold a walk in Llantwit this year.

Time heals what reason cannot.

Back in Our Day

At the supermarket, the young cashier said to an elderly customer, “You should bring your own bags in future because plastic ones aren’t good for the environment.” The old lady apologised and said, “We didn’t have this green thing back in our day.” “That’s the problem,” the cashier replied, “Your generation didn’t do enough to save the environment.” She was right. We returned milk bottles to the milkman, pop bottles to the sweet shop and beer bottles to the off-licence. We refilled pens with ink instead of buying new ones and replaced razor blades instead of throwing away the whole razor. We washed babies’ nappies because we didn’t have the throwaway kind then, dried clothes on the line using wind and solar power and children wore hand-me-downs. But the young lady was right, we didn’t have this green thing back in our day. Back then, we only had one television in the household and we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do things for us. When we posted a fragile item, we used screwed up newspaper as packaging not polystyrene or bubble wrap. We didn’t start a petrol engine just to cut the grass – we just ran on human power but she’s right we didn’t have the green thing back then. We drank water from the tap instead of buying bottled water and accepted that a lot of food was seasonal and didn’t expect it to be flown thousands of miles from around the world. Back then people caught a train or bus to work and children walked to school instead of all these car journeys. We had one electric socket in the room, not a bank of sockets to power half a dozen appliances, nor did we need a computer to receive a signal beamed from a satellite 2,000 miles up in space in order to find the nearest pizza place. How wasteful we oldies were. We didn’t have this green thing back in those days.

Humour

Two caterpillars were sitting on a leaf together chewing away when a butterfly flew past. One caterpillar nudged the other and said, “See that? You’ll never get me to go up in one of those things.

********* A female lion tamer had an act where she had trained the animals to take a lump of sugar from between her lips. A loud-mouthed spectator shouted out “Anyone could do that.” The ringmaster came over to him and challenged him. “OK big mouth,” he said, “why don’t you try it now?” “Fine,” said the man, “but just get those lions out of the way first.”

********* The veteran big-game hunter was relating some of his adventures to his grandson. “So there I was,” he said, “On my own, no-one near enough to help me, with eight ferocious lions coming at me and I only had a knife to protect me. My life was at stake and I was on the verge of panicking……..” “Granddad, the last time you told me this story there were only three lions.” “Ah yes, but the last time I told you the story you were too young to hear the full terrible truth.”

********* The polar bear cub was quizzing his father as youngsters do. “Dad,” he said, “Am I a full blooded polar bear? Am I absolutely 100% polar bear?” “Of course you are,” replied his dad, “My parents were 100% polar bear which makes me 100% polar bear. Your mother’s parents were 100% polar so she’s 100% polar so all that makes you 100% polar bear as well. Anyway, why are you asking?” The cub replied “Because I’m absolutely freezing.”

Saint Padarn

Saint Padarn was born around 490 AD and is said to be Aremorican. This is an area of Northern France which includes the Brittany Peninsula and areas of the Seine and Loire. He journeyed to Wales and became a student of St Illtud, later founding a monastery at Llanbadarn Fawr, near Aberystwyth, which became the seat of a new diocese, with him as its first bishop. He then left it in the charge of a trusted steward and proceeded to Ireland. Padarn's spiritual countenance is sufficient to calm the armies of kings of two provinces. Maelgwn Gwynedd tried to cheat him out of property belonging to the monastery. Two of Maelgwn's evil heralds were undone by the Trial by ordeal of boiling water; scalded and defeated, "Their souls in raven-forms fly to the riverbed, which unto this day by the name of one of them is called, to wit, Graban."[6] Maelgwn Gwynedd himself is first cursed and then cured of his sickness and blindness when he comes on bended knee to ask forgiveness and to bestow lands on Padarn's community. Legend has that a certain tyrant, Arthur by name, one day came to the cell of saint Padarn the bishop. While he was addressing Padarn, he looked at the tunic, which he, being pierced with the zeal of avarice, sought for his own. The saint answering said, "This tunic is not fitting for the habit of any malign person, but for the habit of the clerical office." He went out of the monastery in a rage. And again he returns in wrath, that he might take away the tunic against the counsels of his own companions. One of the disciples of Padarn seeing him returning in fury, ran to saint Padarn and said, "The tyrant, who went out from here before, is returning. Reviling, stamping, he levels the ground with his feet". Padarn answers "Nay rather, may the earth swallow him." With the word straightway the earth opens the hollow of its depth, and swallows Arthur up to his chin. He immediately acknowledging his guilt begins to praise both God and Padarn, until, while he begs forgiveness, the earth delivered him up. From that place on bent knees he begged the saint for indulgence, whom the saint forgave. And he took Padarn as his continual patron, and so departed. Padarn served for twenty-one years in the episcopal office as a man of much prayer and self-denial who frequented the bedsides of the sick and preached the Gospel across the countryside. He is also said to have made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and finally travelled to join his father in Ireland. His feast day is 15th April.

The Meaning of Christian Symbols The most significant symbol in the Christian Church is the Cross. This is because Jesus Christ, our Saviour, was crucified on a cross. On the altar of a

Christian Church there is a cross and there will be others in various parts of the building. Many Christians wear a cross as a pendant round their neck or as a lapel badge. When praying, they may "cross themselves" that is make a cross

shaped sign across their chest in allusion to the death of Jesus. When a priest makes a blessing he also will make the sign of a cross to the congregation. There are many forms of the cross according to the locality and tradition of the church.

The fish is another recognised Christian symbol. This arises from Jesus saying to His Apostles, many of whom were fishermen, “I will make you fishers of men". The Greek word for fish ΙΧΘΥΣ (Ichthys) is an acronym for "Jesus Christ, God's Son,

Saviour" (in Greek!!). It is also worth mentioning the candle which represents "light". Jesus brought light into our lives and this is highly symbolic. To "light a candle for someone" indicates one's intention to say a prayer for them, and the candle symbolizes that prayer
