Revd Canon Susan Oliver writes…
This month begins with the end of all the church festivities and seasons until we begin Lent ....that will be the March Magazine.
The beginning of February is the ending of the Epiphany Season on February 2nd. The nights are still long and until recently, at least in the 2000-year history of the Church, in the days before electricity, candles were expensive. The end of Epiphany was the great Feast of Candlemas on February 2nd. Very very many candles were lit; a blaze of light to commemorate Jesus’s first visit, as an infant, to the Temple in Jerusalem.
There his parents made the ritual offering of thanks for the birth of a son, a sacrifice of doves. An old man met the young couple as they entered the Temple precinct and sang....and an old woman was made happy though she had been a widow for over 65 years, only wed for 7 years.
Now imagine the scene in the staff meeting, as it were, of the Temple after Jesus’s visit if you would.......
The pigeon seller: They looked tired that couple, Mary and Joseph their names. Didn’t look as if they were rich, so they made for me, I’m so much cheaper than the lamb seller. Two pigeons, that’s all. But they didn’t get very far with them...
Priest No1: No, before they could hand them over to me to despatch, for me to burn them in the ritual way, they were accosted by that old man......
Priest no 2 interrupts: ......Simeon his name is. He’s ancient, well past it. He hangs around.....
Priest 3: Is he a beggar? We are getting lots of those. The old people aren’t being looked after in the villages. They all come here for freebies. I know we have to look after the elderly widows but they don’t eat much. There’s that Anna. She seems to live on prayer and fresh air. If only they were all like her. But if we don’t crack down on all this scrounging ..where will it end?
Priest 2: Simeon is no scrounger. He’s a God-fearing man, devout. He looks out for all the couples and peers at the kids. A bit creepy really.
Priest 4: I wonder, the scriptures are full of our hopes for a Messiah, someone who will set us free, liberate us from the Romans. Perhaps he’s looking for the Messiah?
Priest 1: I think you’re on the right track there. He seemed to think that couple were the ones, or rather their child. He began to sing, in that Roman language, Latin they call it: Nunc Dimittis. It goes something like Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace as with my very own eyes I have seen the means of salvation for all people, a light to reveal you to all the nations and to bring glory to your people Israel.
Priest 4: That’s rather poetic. I think it’s a lovely song to say. And I suppose he, Simeon, did just pass away?
Priest 3: I’m not bothered about Simeon, he was just an old man. But if he’s right? We, us, we should look after the Messiah, if it really was him.
The Parish News February 2019
2
Priest 2: But why didn’t you stop them, the parents? If that child really is the Messiah we need as Temple priests to be responsible for his upbringing. He must be brought up to be the new King David, the great man of God and warrior in equal measure. To become a fighter and a prayerful man.
Priest 1: I didn’t see where they went after that and it all happened so quick: pigeons, old man, gone!
Pigeon Seller: you have all butted in with your bits. They bought the pigeons; the old man did sing his farewell song and that Anna you praised looked at the child and became very happy. Simeon and she went off with the couple. They just left with all the others. But if he is the Messiah, that kid, then he will be back that will be for sure.
Well, Jesus did go back to the Temple later on, but he grew up in obscurity, in a backwater, far from Jerusalem and the Temple. But he WAS The Messiah. And Simeon’s song is sung daily in Cathedrals and nightly in my prayers.....thanks be for Candlemas and Jesus.
As February 2nd is a Saturday this year, we shall in the churches here be celebrating Candlemas on February 3rd.
Prayers and Blessings
Sue
A New Year Message from the Bishop of Worcester
As we embark upon 2019, our country is in an unprecedented state, one giving rise to much anxiety, in which we are faced with the most significant of decisions for at least a generation. As the Brexit debate continues, it is very unclear what the future will hold. It is not only parliament that is very divided, we are divided as a country. The referendum, which was supposed to settle the issue, seems to have given rise to hostility as well as division.
In situations such as these, I find the words of Psalm 46, which have given solace to people for thousands of years, of great relevance: ‘God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear.’
Whether or not we feel able to put our trust in God, one thing is clear: there is an overriding need for us to come together as a nation in this coming year and beyond. Reconciliation is at the heart of the Christian faith: Christ came to reconcile us to God and to one another. Human reconciliation is essential for the well-being of our society, the communities within it and ourselves. whether or not we have faith.
I hope and pray that we shall all be able to work for that reconciliation and the common good in the months ahead.
May God bless you richly in 2019 Bishop John.
Would anyone be willing to play the organ or piano at St Mark’s, Fairfield on occasional services?

Thanks to all parishioners for your goodwill to our churches.
Women’s World Day of Prayer This year the service for the World Day of Prayer – a women led, global, ecumenical movement - will be held at St Leonard’s Church, Clent on Friday 1st March at 11am. The service for 2019 is a beautiful one written by the Christian women of Slovenia. It will be led this year by Canon Sue Oliver and there will be special refreshments afterwards. Although the service is always put together by women around the world, both men and women – and children – are welcome. Do please bring your friends and come and support it.

BELLS
On the ringing front all is well – or it is on Christmas Eve as I’m typing this. We have more or less let John Westley hang up his rope – if that’s the correct term – as he is finding ringing more difficult as he gets older – 80 this year (I’m sure I’m not giving that away as they always like a party and any excuse to celebrate – hurry). Our Annual dinner will either have just happened or be about to. The social aspects of ringing are important too – it can in some towers get a bit too serious that people get forgotten. After all the Armistice and WWI ringing of the last few years it seems quite quiet until wedding season kicks off. As ever we are always on the lookout for new recruits so if you feel like giving it a go either ring me or turn up any Tuesday – the church door is open. Rosie Marshall Tower Captain Belbroughton

Kitchen Corner
Kate Bottley, star of Gogglebox and Celebrity Masterchef, baked a special Christingle cake in 2017 to support The Children's Society's work among disadvantaged children
https://www.childrenssociety.org.uk/what-you-can-do/fundraising-and-events/christingle-cake-recipe
Do you have a recipe to share? If so, please send it along to the Editor
Ingredients
Orange sponge
340g soft butter or margarine, plus extra
to grease
340g self-raising flour, plus extra to dust
340g caster sugar
6 large free-range eggs
Zest of two large oranges
1 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting
250g icing sugar
80g unsalted butter
20 ml milk
2 tablespoons Marmalade
Orange sponge
500g of ready-to-roll Orange icing
Christingle decorations
Christingle candle
12cm square of Tin foil
4 wooden skewers
4 x marshmallows
4 x fruity pastilles (or other sweets of
similar size)
4 x dried apricots
30cm Diameter cake board (optional)
Special Equipment:
Electric whisk or freestanding electric
mixer
Large hemisphere cake tin
Method
1. Get ready to bake: Preheat the oven to 170°C/340°F. Grease
the Large Hemisphere Cake Pan thoroughly and sprinkle with a
light dusting of flour.
2. Make the cakes: Beat the butter, sugar and orange zest
together with an electric whisk or freestanding electric mixer
until light and fluffy. Beat the 6 eggs together in a jug, then pour
into the butter & sugar mixture bit by bit until well incorporated.
Then fold in the flour & vanilla extract gently using a spatula or
large metal spoon until you have a smooth batter (be careful not
to overmix).
3. Bake the cake: Pour the mixture into the cake tin, scraping
the bowl with a spatula. Balance the tin on a round cake tin for
stability and bake for around 60 minutes on the middle shelf of
the oven. Leave in the tin until completely cool, then turn out
onto a cooling rack.
4. Make the frosting: Beat together the butter and icing sugar
until roughly combined, then beat in the milk until the frosting is
smooth. Whisk on a high speed for 5 minutes until light and
fluffy then add the marmalade and whisk for another 2 minutes.
5. Frost the cake: Using a pallet knife, cover the cake dome with
the orange frosting. Roll out the orange icing until about 35cm
Diameter. Place onto the cake, gently smooth from the top
downwards and trim away any excess icing from the bottom so
you are left with an orange dome for your Christingle. Place the
cake on your cake board.
6. Christingle time!: Wrap a red ribbon around the base of your
orange cake. Place the square of foil on the top and push the
candle into the centre of the cake, as you would do with a
normal Christingle. Poke a marshmallow, pastille and apricot
onto each skewer and then stick in each corner of the cake to
resemble the cocktail sticks and fruits of a Christingle.
7. Serve the cake: You can light the candle and admire your
Christingle cake in all its glory before cutting and serving slices
to your hungry congregation, family or community group.
Enjoy!

BELBROUGHTON HISTORY SOCIETY
Welcome to our next meeting on - Wednesday 20th February at 7.30pm As usual it takes place at Belbroughton Hall. Entry is £3.00 and includes tea or coffee and biscuits. All are welcome. Ray Sturdy will give a talk called Remembering the Swinging Sixties. This talk will look back at Britain’s new cars at the time, motorways, new housing, a youth boom and petrol at 5/-(25p) per gallon. Pop Music, the Beatles, Twiggy and Concorde arrived in a decade of change and revolution. There were scandals, a royal wedding, a moon walk and almost a nuclear war! Future date for your diary; more details to follow. Wednesday March 20th. The Rise and Fall of Belbroughton’s Scythemaking Industry by Sarah Bradley.
Animal Sanctuary And Protection As many of you already know, we had to say Goodbye to Dottie our well-loved and inspirational donkey. She sadly died just two days after Christmas. Looking back, she had been poorly for a little while. She managed to join in the Christmas carol singing, and knew all the words. We were very touched by the messages of condolence we received from so many people, from as far away as Seattle! Needless to say, we are all very upset, but have something happier to look forward to. Hopefully I will be able to add a post script to this letter that we are now waiting for two rescued Miniature Shetland ponies, that were saved from the side of a dual carriageway. Wilma is the Mother and Fudge her little boy!! May I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone that came to the Carol Service, our singing was NOT responsible for the rain!! I am sure you will agree the children sang their Carol beautifully! Thanks also to Rachel at the Deli for the lovely mince pies. Gaye Hadley. PS The new Shetland ponies have arrived and are settling in wonderfully

BELBROUGHTON HISTORY SOCIETY – FROM THE ARCHIVES
Although WW1 ended in November 1918, its effects were, of course, felt long afterwards. Two letters from William Rusgrove Nash, who took over the Belbroughton scythe-making industry after his father Isaac died, show how the business fared in the months following the war. Shortage of men was clearly a major problem in the face of renewed demand for edge tools. January 2nd, 1919 To: Messrs Wiebusch & Hilger Ltd(*) New York Dear Sirs Replying to your letter of the 5th ult, whilst we are all rejoicing at the termination of the war, and are full of hope that the terms of peace will soon be arranged satisfactorily, so far as business is concerned, we are very sorry today, that there are not any signs of much improvement in the situation – At present we are in a worse position than we were at this time last year, and we are afraid that we cannot at the moment give you any promise with regard to next season. We are making urgent appeals for the return of a number of our men who are anxious to return, but we fear that there will be a good deal of delay, and so far none have come back. We hope to be in a better position in the course of this month to let you know how we are likely to be situated, and we will then write to you again. We cannot give you a final quotation, because we expect that there will be another advance in wages almost immediately, and the prices for raw material and fuel are still unstable. So far, however, as we can see there will have to be an advance in the prices of American scythes of from 10/- to 12/- per doz on those charged last May, and even then it will be a great reduction in our [***] list. We shall not hesitate to start making a small quantity if the opportunity offers, and so soon as we have anything definite to report, will write to you again. February 4th 1919 To: Messrs Fredk Mountford and Sons (**) Sheffield Dear Sir We are in receipt of your order B.722 for 12 dozen 30- Crown Scythes. We are sorry however that we cannot accept it as we find from a recent stock taking that we have already booked more orders than we are likely to make in time for the season. If you would like to know more about Belbroughton’s scythemaking industry, please come to my talk in the Church Hall at 7.30 on Wednesday 20 March. Sarah Bradley Belbroughton History Society www.belbroughtonhistory.org.uk * Wiebusch and Hilger were an American importer who c1890 were involved in a court case challenging the imposition of duty of 45% on scythes and grass hooks. ** Scythe manufacturers in Sheffield, later taken over by Tyzacks who in turn had links to Nash’s.

This impressive one-man show has been developed especially for rural touring and is suitable for a mixed age family audience to enjoy. What marks this company as different from a standard ‘juggling act’ are their terrific bespoke contraptions which look like things created for TV’s The Crystal Maze or QI. You can get a really good idea of these Heath Robinson goodies in the video trailer for the show. In a nutshell, it’s a skilfully and engagingly performed stripped-back circus show involving these handmade remote-controlled contraptions, comedy and juggling. Tickets on sale from Fairfield Post Office. Adults £8.50 U16s £5.00 Fight the Grot For nearly 3 years, a small band of volunteers have helped keep Fairfield tidy, litter picking along the village roads and around the Rec. each month. Help is needed on the second Saturday of each month, meet outside the Village Hall 10.30am. Please donate an hour, every few months, to keep YOUR community tidy. Next litter pick: 9th February Not sure? Don’t open the door! Protect yourself from doorstep crime. Be aware of people who turn up unannounced, most genuine callers will have a pre-arranged appointment. If in doubt, keep them out! Doorstep crime can include rogue traders offering home improvement or gardening services, or bogus callers who claim to be the council, police, health carers or energy companies. Rogue traders may say they are in the area working on another property and they have spotted a problem with your home or garden. They may claim to have materials left over from another job, like paving or tarmac. They may try to pressurise you to buy goods or sign up for services on the spot. Unfortunately all too often they may offer to carry out work cheaply , but charge an extortionate price after the work has been completed. Bogus callers may claim to be working for the council, water, gas or electric company. They could also say they are a nurse, doctor or even from the police. Bogus callers may say they need to come into your home, or try to get you to go outside. They may try to distract you so they can steal your money. They can be male, female or even children. A pedlar is someone who calls at your door to sell items that they have to offer, This can often include cleaning or household goods. These goods may be sold at an overpriced value. By law pedlars are required to carry a pedlar’s certificate, which is issues by the police force in the area they operate. If you are not sure who is at the door, do not open it. Check the identity of any caller. Confirm who they are by calling the company they work for by using the number from the telephone directory or from off one of your bills. Do not call a number provided by them. If caller does not leave your property when asked to do so, call the police. Cold Mornings Don’t give criminals an easy ride by leaving your car running.

Although vehicle crime is low across West Mercia, cars are stolen from driveways every winter because owners leave them unattended, with the keys in the ignition, while they warm up and the windscreen defrost. Some vehicle owners nip inside for just a few seconds to collect a bag or finish the last mouthful of coffee – but that’s all the time an opportunist thief needs. Insurance companies may not pay out for cars stolen in this way – and if your house keys are taken as well, you’re making your home vulnerable. Freeze out car thieves on frosty mornings: - Clear windscreens with de-icer and a scraper - Sit in your vehicle while the heater de-mists the windscreen For more vehicle security advice, visit: www.westmercia.police.uk

FAIRFIELD WI – November 2018
Our meeting was opened by Carol, welcoming us all and wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2019. Members were reminded that our Annual Meal is being held at the Queens in Belbroughton on Wednesday February 20th at 7.00pm. Ilsa informed us that, for anyone who would like to be involved in this year’s Produce Show, there is a meeting at Anne’s on January 23rd at 7.30pm. We have received a letter from the Village Hall Committee thanking W.I. for our donation of £50 from last year’s Produce Show, which will hopefully go towards an overhead projector. The next meeting of the Book Club is on 23rd March. Congratulations must go to Meriel who Carol presented with the Competition Cup for most points earned throughout 2018.
Our Speaker for the evening was Kelly Broadfield, telling us about the work of Dodford Children’s Farm. Kelly has lived on the farm with her family for 12 years. It is a long-established registered Charity started by a school doctor working in Birmingham and Lucy Cadbury and was setup to offer residential stays for children up to the age of 9 years.
Most of the visitors come from inner city schools, nurseries and special schools and are referred by a professional for a holiday. Families can stay for up to 5 days at a very low cost. It is a lovely, peaceful setting, giving the children opportunities to interact with the animals and spend time playing outdoors in a country setting. Many members know of the farm and regularly drive past without knowing of the wonderful work and commitment that is so generously given, ensuring that these city children and families return home, having had such a memorable experience. The dedication of both staff and volunteers was obvious from Kelly’s description. Kelly regularly gives her time to talk about the excellent work of Dodford Children’s Farm and any funding she receives goes into their hard-earned funds in order to provide those extras for each child. All members enjoyed the talk and the Vote of Thanks was given by Shirley. Fairfield WI meets every 2nd Wednesday at Fairfield Village Hall at 7.30. Do come along and join us. You would be very welcome. Carol Hine President Fairfield WI

CLENT MOTHERS’ UNION Our AGM was very well supported with very few apologies. Following our worship, branch leader, Anne Harris, opened the AGM with her yearly report on branch activities and expressing her thanks to members for their continuing support. Treasurer, Jan Woolley, gave out copies of the year’s accounts which, as usual, were very comprehensive and easy to understand. Committee members and branch officers all agreed to continue and the remainder of the business was dealt with. On behalf of members, Jan thanked Anne for her excellent leadership of our bracnch; without Anne we know our branch would not be as successful as it is. Anne then turned our thoughts to the February Candlemas Party and received from members promises of food for the event. Secretary, Audrey Walton, is sending out invitations and we are praying for a fine day for 7th February, when we hope to welcome many people to our Candlemas Party. After the meeting, we had tea as usual, enjoying a last taste of Christmas with cake, stolen and mince pies. Our next meeting is Candlemas Party on 7th February at 2pm in Clent Parish Hall.

CLENT WI We had a lot of food on our mind during the last months and I am sure enjoyed every bit of it. We started with a festive Christmas buffet super in our December meeting an evening that was very well attended, no surprise really as the tables were full of tempting treats provided by members. Then in January, just when our thoughts were maybe turning towards a bit of New Year healthy eating, Irene Oliver appeared and smilingly took us Dining Through Three Centuries. Please note that we did not exactly eat our way through the entire three hundred years but rather looked at what our forebears ate and how they behaved around food. Some interesting table manners were discovered.
On February 14th Clent WI will be back in the village hall. (We will be happy to collect any of our stray Valentine cards there. ) Adrian James will be with us and with his help our attention will turn to Bodenham Arboretum . We will see the lovely arboretum as it changes through the seasons and will no doubt be encouraged by what we see and hear to take a walk or walks over there. CLENT HISTORY SOCIETY
Our first meeting this year will be on March 21st and our speaker is Mr. Ian Bott. He is an excellent speaker and will not disappoint, his talk is ‘Black Country Picture Postcards’ and this will excite our postcard collectors and everyone who has visited an area and chosen a particular postcard to send to friends because this is the message we want to give to our receiver. Ian’s talks are always interesting, and we welcome all to come and listen. Our talks start at 8 pm and entry is £2-00 members and £2-50 non-members. Paul Timmins (chairman)
CLENT HISTORY SOCIETY – From the Archives
100 Years ago in February1919 Clent School Log book shows how bad the weather was, and how it affected the attendance of the pupils and staff, there were shortages of coal, but it was post War. Jan 27th Monday, Heavy Fall of snow this year, but not too heavy to hinder children coming to school. However in the afternoon all the Home children were absent, without notice, and the remainder of children, with two or three exceptions were present. Feb 7th Friday. I wish to state that the School is not properly cleaned and that dust is unsettled and fire not properly lit at 9 o’clock. This has been the condition of things throughout the winter. This week bits of paper from Wednesday’s Handwork lesson are still un-removed and lay about untouched. For the last fortnight temperature has been below 4* F at 9 o’clock (the temperature chart) Feb 14th, Week ending- attendance slightly improved but still bad 87% Colds and influenza are prevailing causes of poor attendance. Feb 17th Monday, Holiday all day owing to there being no coal for School fires. Temperature below freezing point at 9o Feb 18th no marking of Registers today as only 15 children attend during morning and only 30 attend in the afternoon. Cause- Heavy Snow storm during previous night and cold east wind. Feb 19th Wednesday, Recommence in earnest this morning but attendance is still very poor- 56 present out of 79. Many children have severe colds Cause- lack of coal generally- bad weather- cost of living. Feb 21st. Mrs. Gill is away again today and has been all the week- cold – probably influenza, Half day this afternoon as I feel poorly myself, Feb 28th Mrs. Gill absent again this week- influenza Many children still away with influenza colds- 86.1% NB. School is not sufficiently warm first thing in the morning, fires should be lighted earlier Mar 7th Mrs. Gill away again all this week with influenza Mar 14th weather has improved this week and the attendance bears a marked improvement 84% April 1st , Mrs. Gill gives a months notice of leaving. This Teacher has been of little use for the past 18 months owing to absence of illness. April 18th, Improved weather has improved attendance. There has been continuous bad weather this year ever since Christmas. Jonas Rawson.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS YOU CAN KEEP Are you sick of making the same resolutions year after year that you never keep? Why not promise to do something you can ACTUALLY accomplish? Here are some resolutions that you can use as a starting point: ~ Gain weight. At least 30 pounds. ~ Stop exercising. Waste of time. ~ Read less. Makes you think. ~ Watch more TV and Netflix. I've been missing some good stuff. ~ Procrastinate more. Starting tomorrow. ~ Don't jump off a cliff just because everyone else did. ~ Stop bringing lunch from home - eat out more. ~ Get in a whole NEW rut! ~ Start being superstitious. ~ Personal goal: Don't bring back disco. ~ Speak in a monotone voice and only use monosyllabic words. ~ Create loose ends. ~ Don't believe politicians. ~ Spread out priorities beyond the ability to keep track of them. ~ Wait for opportunity to knock. ~ Focus on the faults of others. ~ Mope about faults. ~ Never make New Year's resolutions again.

December 2018 The month of December with the Rotary Club of Hagley started with an informed and well received presentation by representatives from Worcestershire Health authority. Members were given the benefit of a peep inside the trauma and daily challenges our doctors face, and the humour the staff have developed to provide a welcomed environment to the sick and injured who visit during the day. Christmas Dinner Farewell Rotarians and their partners celebrated 40 years at the Stone Manor with the annual Christmas Party. The event was tempered with some sadness that this was our last meeting with Hogarth’s and the staff made the occasion special with a 4 course Christmas dinner and 5 Star Service worthy of accreditation. President Julie Banks thanked the staff for their devoted service over the 40 years through which we have held a Rotary presence on Monday evenings and wished them well for the coming year. The evening was well served with Rotarian Dave Coller leading the evening with a welcomed new interpretation of pass the parcel, in which several last years presents made a welcomed and noted return appearance. Rotarian Godfrey Partridge marshalled the Rotarians and their guests into a final photo shoot, remembering for posterity our many years of meetings and events we have held at the Stone Manor together with members past and present and hoping our move to the Lyttleton Arms in Hagley. will be as memorable. 2019 Moving Rotary The members of the Rotary Club of Hagley, after much sole searching, agreed to relocate to within the community in which their name resides. During 2018 discussion took place at our meetings regarding the future of the club and how best to serve the clubs membership and the community we are directed to support. It was agreed that the club could better serve the objectives of Rotary if their meetings were within the Borough of Hagley. So after a very warm welcome from Amy Cooper at Mitchells & Butlers plc, our meetings will recommence on the 7th January at 7.30pm in the Lyttleton Arms, Bromsgrove Road, Hagley DY9 9LJ where a well prepared and generous menu has been prepared for the pleasure of Rotarians and to enhance our future meetings. Future Events As readers will appreciate from this article, the Rotary Club of Hagley, now residing at the Lyttleton Arms, Bromsgrove Road, Hagley, maintains an active social calendar in addition to a well-informed weekly meeting. We currently meet routinely at 7.00pm for 7.30pm on Monday evenings and welcome new guests and prospective members.
So please phone
Martin Freckelton on 01562 700 391 or Dave Santus on 01562 886 529 who would be delighted to tell you more about our Rotary Club in Hagley and its activities.
