There’s a very famous Church in WashingtonDC where the American Presidents tend toworship. A lady phoned the minister in themiddle of the week asking if the Presidentwould be there this coming Sunday? The min-ister said, “I don’t know, but I can tell you thatwe are expecting God to be present and Henormally draws a good crowd!”

I think most of us would be a little nervous if the U.S. President poppedin to Sunday worship yet God Himself always promises to be there – andthat fact we often completely ignore.

It is very tempting to let our senses and minds drift from the reallyimportant to the really secondary. The really important of course is thepresence of our holy and loving God in word and spirit. The reallysecondary is everything else.

In Hebrews chapter 12 verses 18 andfollowing, we are presented with twovery different worship venues and experi-ences. Mount Sinai is in view and theterrifying presence of God was there forall to see! But worship for us today isdifferent but is holy ground nonetheless. So let’s try to re-kindle a correct sense ofholy expectation and awe the next timeyou are in church – who knows who might

show up, regardless, God has promised that when two or three gathertogether He will be with them.

PILGRIMAGE

Pilgrimage to some holy ancientsites around Ballymena hosted bythe former rector Revd Stuart Lloyd.

This will take place on Thursday22nd June meeting at St Patrick’s,Castle Street, ready to leave at 6.30pm. Bring clothes for all weathers. Some information for the mind andsome prayers for the spirit.

Watch out for booking in sheets atthe back of church early in June.

DID YOU MISS IT?

The Easter Vestry I mean, then youwill have missed my report after notquite a year in Ballymena. I won’tre-visit the report in full but, hereare a few key points.

· Our theology of the churchmust be firstly, UP to God,secondly OUT to others, thenthirdly IN to each other. Getthis theology wrong and thingswill get tricky.

· I have spent year one watchingand learning and along withtwo bishops and our two cu-rates prayerfully consideringwhat needs to change. Withthis in mind I will be sharing mythoughts so far with key lead-

ers over the summer monthsand will be planning a VisionService in the autumn to reviseplans for the future.

· We have an amazing and dedi-cated staff and team of volun-teers who keep everythinggoing. It has been a shock tothe McConnell’s to come tosuch a big and busy church.Thank you all for your timetalents and unwavering faith inour Saviour.

There was much much more on thenight – including quite a funny mo-ment when we were trying to findsome under 35’s to serve on variouscommittees. If you weren’t there –you missed it – I hope the abovegives you a flavour of the evening –maybe you might come next year!

It seems a little strange to be writing this without a big project on handto bring you up to date with, but for a while at least let’s all enjoy thepeace while it lasts. In the meantime the more everyday matters ofkeeping the churches, halls and houses in good shape carries on, and weare very glad to have John back at work as sexton in Castle Street andhope that he is well recovered from his recent illness, he was very muchmissed in his absence. Thanks to all who helped cover his duties at StPatrick’s while he was away, and especially so to Eddie and Millicent forstepping back into their old roles so willingly for a while.

Your new Select Vestry has a good mix of some of the old hands, and moreimportantly perhaps a good number of new faces too who will we hopebring some fresh perspective on a few of the same old problems whichbeset the parish, and we’ll all pray that not too many new problems ariseto test us.

I’d like to make you aware of some changes that are going to be tried outin the way that your Select Vestry conducts its business. In an effort tolimit the length of the Select Vestry meetings (because no one is produc-ing their best thinking once we get well into the third hour and we’drather be back at home getting ready for bed) we are going to try settinga time limit to the monthly meetings of two hours. Once nine thirtycomes we propose to try dealing only with any very urgent business thathas not already been settled, and moving anything else which has notbeen discussed to the top of the agenda for the next meeting. If all goesto plan this should see the regular Select Vestry meetings ended by nolater than 10.00 pm.

In addition the agenda for these meetings will be created and circulatedto the members a little earlier so that they have a better chance to thinkabout what we will look at beforehand and perhaps form their opinionson the best course of action in a less pressured way. This does mean one

change for the way I prepare the agenda, however, that you need to takeon board please. Up to now it has been quite common for me to findcorrespondence for the Select Vestry on my mat when I got home fromwork on the day of the meeting. From here forward if you have anythingthat you want to go onto the agenda, please try to get it to me earlier,I’d suggest a week if possible, otherwise it will be held over until the nextregular meeting unless it is dramatically urgent.

In case you didn’t know the S.V. meets on the second Tuesday of themonth (and not in July or August), so if you have anything you want us tolook at on June 13th can you get it to me by (in an ideal world) the 6thor 7th of June please? Otherwise it probably won’t be up for discussionuntil the September meeting. We’ll keep working to that time-table intothe future too, but don’t get too hung up about it, as ever the mostimportant thing is to let a member of the Select Vestry know of anyconcern you have at any time, and we’ll do our best to deal with it in atimely way.

I hope you all have a good summer.Alastair

Church Wardens

ST PATRICK’S

Alex McNeill

I am employed as a manager within the publicsector. Having attended evening service in StPatrick’s for several years I was privileged tobe asked to be Rector’s Churchwarden. Overrecent Sundays I have met many parishionersnot previously known to me and during myterm in this office I’m sure I shall meet manymore. My interests include beekeeping, an-

tiques, photography and gardening.

Ruth Dixon

This is my third term as a Churchwarden. In 2007 I was the People’sChurchwarden and then Rector’s Churchwarden in 2016. I thoroughlyenjoyed my time in both positions. When I was asked recently if I wouldlike to be considered for People’s Churchwarden again I considered it areal honour to be asked and decided I wouldlet my name go forward. My father had alsobeen a Churchwarden on three occasionsand I thought it would be nice to hold thesame record as him. I was a member of theGFS which I really enjoyed and later joinedthe choir. At present I work as a legalsecretary in Belfast. My hobbies are nu-merous but my favourites are singing, BibleStudy and I just love a bit of retail therapy.

2017/2018BALLYCLUG

William Burnett

I am delighted that Mark has asked me tocontinue as Rector’s Churchwarden at Bally-clug for another year. I married Karen four-teen years ago and we have six childrenbetween us. Most of them have left home butthey tend to come back on a regular basis andwe are delighted to see them and enjoy theircompany. Karen and I enjoy holidays but aswe both work we are restricted on how oftenwe can get away.

Jackie Greer

I served my time as an engineer with the Merchant Navy and worked withseveral local companies since leaving the Navy. I became a member ofSt Patrick’s when I met my wife. We have three grown up children andtwo grandchildren. I would like to thank the congregation of Ballyclugfor choosing me once again to serve for another year and for their

continued support. I thoroughly enjoy myrole in the parish and the continued in-volvement with the various work partiesin the upkeep of the church and grave-yard. My hobbies are music and caravan-ning. Since retiring last year I wonderhow I ever found time to work. One ofthe best things that has happened thisyear was being presented with a littlegrand-daughter called Evie a few weeksago.

This month the Youth Club and Sunday School were looking at the work ofChristian Aid and how they help many people who have fled from theirhomes due to war.  We talked about going on a journey and what thingswe would take with us, remembering that those that flee their homestake very little with them.   We looked at Psalm 31 in the Bible and readthat God is our safe place and our rock of refuge. We prayed that peoplewho flee their homes due to war would know this.  We donated £65 to thework of Christian Aid so that they may help these people.

The Curate’sLetter

What a journey this has been:-

From May 2014 things have moved and changed in our lives. Ourdaughters Stephanie and Rachel having grown up and flown the nest tolive their own lives and follow their own paths.

In June 2014 I was called to minister in Ballymena Parish. The Lord hascertainly been good to Margo and I. We are very thankful for thewelcome from the Parish. The support we have received as a family hasbeen a wonderful witness to God’s love and care of us.

We have made so many new friends and been provided with lots of loveand care. The many cups of tea, dinners and yummy tray bakes alongwith the chat and banter leaves us with expanded waistlines and precioushappy memories. Over the past three years we have laughed and shed afew tears together as we have approached life’s challenges. Through theyears we have shared together the Word of the Lord and the faith thatupholds us as Christians.

I am very thankful and consider it to have been a great privilege to havereceived sincere leadership while I have been here, under the directionand guidance of Cannon Stuart Lloyd. I wish him a long and fruitfulretirement. I know that he still keeps himself very busy and is aninspirational man.

Special thanks to all of you for the great help and support that I receivedduring the period when the parish was vacant – so many people supportedme by their prayers and practical help. I apologise that I am not able toname everyone, however, I would like to personally acknowledge the helpof the ladies in the office, Lorraine, Sandra and Lucy, who kept me on theright track with their knowledge, skills and ability to face all challenges.Having worked under Rev Mark McConnell’s guidance in Ballyclare for afew years I had some insight into his many talents and skills along with

his gift of the gab and his questionable true stories! It has been lovely tore-establish this relationship, catch up on the family’s progress over theyears and to have the privilege of working with Mark again. I would askyou as a congregation to continue to support Mark, Cherith and the familyas they lead the ministry within Ballymena Parish.

The addition to the church of my ‘Co Bodyguard’ Dennis, his wife Jen andfamily has brought another dynamic energy to the church in Ballymena. They are sincere and enthusiastic about the work that they do.

This is a very exciting time for us as we prepare for the move, and lookforward to meeting many new people, also some people that my wife hasnot seen for many years, as she used to attend St Jude’s as a child whenshe lived in Muckamore, until she fell in love with a handsome young manand moved to Glengormley.

I thank you all for the love and support that you have surrounded us withduring our time in Ballymena. I hope that our friendships continue togrow as we endeavour to follow the Lord’s guidance on our journeythrough life.

It would be lovely to see as many of you as possible at my Institution atSt Jude’s, Muckamore on the 28th June.
