National Vocation Awareness Week is HERE

starting this weekend! Last weekend we announced

a new initiative called The Vocation Chalice

Program where individuals and families will receive

a Chalice Box that contains prayers to use

throughout the day and at mealtimes, a chalice to

be placed in a prominent place in the home and

incorporated into prayer time, and other useful

information to help promote vocations in our

families, parishes and the Church as well. This

initiative begins NEXT SUNDAY at the 9 a.m. and

10:15 a.m. Masses. Come and See!

VOCATIONS BEGIN IN THE HOME. Please pray

about how God is calling you to live out your

vocation more deeply. Please encourage the young

people in your life – children, grandchildren,

students, and friends – to be open WHEN God

calls them to ministry in this parish, to religious life,

to the diaconate and to priesthood. Promoting

vocations is everyone’s business – from the parish

priests and other leaders, to the individuals and

families of the parish – we all have a part to play

in the work of encouraging more young people to be

more engaged in the church. Responding to the call

to serve will have a profound impact on the proper

direction needed to be taken by the church at this

critical time – good and holy people sheding light

upon the church in the modern world.

What do you love to do? What are you

passionate about? What do you see is needed on

today’s world? What are you great at? Perhaps

your purpose in life is to serve the church

locally? Take time to pray about it this week.

BE AMONG THE FIRST

TO VOLUNTEER “The Vocation Chalice Box”

I want to bring it to my home to

pray for Vocations in Parish Life

NAME: ___________________________________

PHONE: __________________________________

EMAIL: __________________________________

Or contact Tom Griffin at the Parish Office or via email:

[email protected]

Once we have a sufficient number of names you’ll be

contacted by a member of our Vocations Team with a full

explanation of how and when to receive it, and how and

when to return it for the next individual or family.

Our initial focus for Vocations Awareness Week will

be on our own parish ministry needs. You’ve seen

individuals serve as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers,

Ushers and Greeters, Sacristans, Altar Servers,

Baptism Prep and Marriage Prep Teams, Funeral

Ministry, and much more! These ministerial roles in

the parish are deeply rooted in someone responding

to God’s call to serve the church at the local level.

We encourage everyone to spend some time in

prayer these next few weeks to discern how God

might be calling you to serve your own parish needs.

Why A Chalice? The Meaning of the Chalice

The Chalice is symbolic of the Eucharist. At the

Lord’s Supper we hear of the chalice of wine

with the bread rising above it. The chalice used

for the celebration of the Eucharist contains

wine mixed with a little water over which the

priest repeats the words of consecration: "This

is my body" and holds up the chalice for the

congregation to see. The ritual is extremely

important and the chalice is one of the most

richly decorated objects in the church’s

treasury. The chalice is a representation of The

Body of Christ among us, and we, too, are

members of The Body of Christ!

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR Election day is coming up. I want to urge all of you to go out and vote for the candidate of your choice. Voting is such an important civic duty. I am always saddened when I hear such a low percentage of eligible voters have voted. I especially want to encourage young people to vote. Whoever is elected will affect your future. Most of the time when we vote, we vote for our own economic securi-ty. This year I would ask you to bring some spiritual prin-ciples and concern for your fellow human being into the polling booth. Whether you do or not, just go out and vote. Remember all your complaints about the election will be discarded if you have not voted!!

On Tuesday, November 13th at 7:00 PM in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, we will have a Remembrance Liturgy for all those who died this past year.

The Craft Fair will be in Villanova Hall on November 17th.

Also, on the weekend of November 17th & 18th, Bishop Hennessey will be with us to bless the icon of the Transfig-uration in both churches. He will bless the icon in St. Dor-othy’s Church at the 4:00 PM Mass that weekend and he will bless the icon in St. Thomas of Villanova church at the noon Mass. Since he is staying overnight, he will also say the 9:00 AM at St. Thomas of Villanova church too.

On Sunday evening, Nov 18th, the Ecumenical Thanksgiv-ing Service will be held at the United Methodist Church. The service will begin at 6:00 PM. All are welcome.

Beginning the weekend of December 8th & 9th, we will have a parish mission. Fr. Simeon Gallagher, OFMCap. will lead the mission. Fr Gallagher is Director of the Preaching Ministry Office of the Mid-America Province of the Capuchin Order. He conducts retreats, parish devel-opment programs, parish missions, and religious education workshops. He was the retreat master on the priests’ re-treat I attended several years ago. He was excellent. He will preach at all Masses that weekend and at the parish mission which will run for four nights (Monday – Thurs-day). He is well known so I am sure when people from other parishes hear that he is leading our parish mission, they will attend the mission too. More to come in the weeks leading up to the mission. In the meantime, save the date. It will be worth it.

My thanks to the Knights of Columbus for providing each church with a book rack as well as reading materials. The reading materials are free so take something home to read.

Finally, continue to pray for the Church as it continues to dig itself out of the mess caused by the actions of some bishops and priests. Let’s hope they will soon put protocols in place to deal with any bishop who is accused of abuse or mishandling an abuse accusation when it reached his desk. More importantly, pray for those who have been harmed by their actions.

Well I guess that is it for now. Until next time, take care. Fr. Earley
