Today’s Readings: Isaiah 43.1-7 Acts 8.14-17 Ps 29 Luke 3.15-22

Readings for Next Sunday: Isaiah 62.1-5 1 Corinthians 12.1-11 Ps. 36.5-10 John 2.1-11

Opening Sentence: The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in bodily form like a

dove, and a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I

am well pleased.’ Luke 3.22

Prayer for the Baptism of our Lord: Loving God, your Son came to seek the lost,

and was baptised with sinners: grant that we, who have been baptised in his name,

may reach out in love to those in need with the mercy of Christ our Lord, who lives

and reigns with you, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer of the Week: Almighty God, who anointed Jesus at his baptism with the

Holy Spirit and revealed him as your beloved Son: inspire us, your children, who

are born again of water and the Spirit, to surrender our lives to your service, that we

may rejoice to be called your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

READINGS FOR THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET ISAIAH

CHAPTER 43 VERSES 1-7:

Thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O

Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are

mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the

rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not

be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God,

the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and

Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured,

and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life.

Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and

from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, ‘Give them up,’ and to

the south, ‘Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters

from the end of the earth – everyone who is called by my name, whom I created

for my glory, whom I formed and made.’

HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD THANKS BE TO GOD

PSALM 29: We say alternate verses:

Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to his name;

worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Rev’d Derek Barrett’s Commentary on the Readings:

Psalm 29 Judaism was not just a religion about God, it was a belief in the God who speaks, so it is not surprising that this ancient hymn has God speaking seven times in the one stanza. The repetition is very striking, especially so as the “Voice of the Lord” is heard as various forces in nature such as storms, desert winds, the roaring of the seas. All these are not to be considered as outside the Almighty’s normal activity, for there He is in the midst of all these manifestations. He is controlling all of them, not as a remote and unfeeling potentate, but as One who cares for His people and gives them strength. Nor is He acting in independent solitude. The psalmist sees that the angels are constituting the court of heaven which is bursting with energy as they worship Him in songs of endless praise. What we are doing in the parish today is an attempt to mirror the angels’ adoration and what the writer of the Book of Revelation saw and heard in his vision…then I heard all created things, in heaven and on earth, under the earth and in the sea, crying, ‘praise and honour, glory and might, to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb for ever’

Acts 8 vv14-17 Instead of a fragment from the epistles today we are treated to a dip into Church history. Acts 8 is important because it takes us back to the Apostolic Mission’s first step “into all the world”. Samaria was a good place to start. The Philip we are hearing about is not the one who was part of the twelve disciples but the Philip who like Stephen was one of the seven “deacons” appointed by them. The fourth gospel tells us the “Jews had no dealings with Samaritans” because of a quarrel which began eight centuries previously. The Samaritans were half Jewish-half Gentile by racial descent and were on that account wide open to those who brought love, healing and acceptance leading to great joy. St. Peter and St. John arrive to administer the rite of Holy Baptism. This is not only the story of a certain professional magician and astrologer named Simon who was so overcome by the power of the Holy Spirit and who learned very quickly that such power can not be purchased because it is freely given, it is part of the story of all baptised Christians who are empowered and commanded to pass on what they have received to those who haven’t. What was launched at this time into the public arena has been subverted into the private realm. We must put it back where it started and where it belongs.

Luke 3 vv 15-22 Three chords are struck. The Baptist proclaims Jesus as Messiah. John is imprisoned by Herod. Jesus was baptized. Our liturgical year with Luke is well on its way. The commercial world has finished with Christmas until December comes. It has its own agenda to pursue, for it will jump on any bandwagon, secular or other-worldly. We have more important matters in hand. The third gospel is full of prayer and it will help us to pray with greater understanding and effect. Jesus at prayer is a powerful image. It is an activity that binds divinity and humanity in perfect balance and harmony. Praying is not primarily asking for something perceived as lacking. Praying is first and foremost contemplation, thanksgiving and adoration. Jesus knows who He is and his thankfulness overflows in divine love for the Creator, the universe and all its creatures and contents. We have not finished with Christmas. We are basking in the love of the Pieta, the constancy and the obedience of the carpenter, the radiance of their divine baby. We embrace the peace of God revealed in the season of Epiphany, for peace on earth and goodwill to all are sadly lacking.

3

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders;

the Lord is upon the mighty waters.

The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice;

the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendour.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;

He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire;

the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;

the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare.

And in the temple of the Lord all are crying, ‘Glory!’

The Lord sits enthroned above the flood;

the Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore.

The Lord shall give strength to his people;

the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

THE EPISTLE IS WRITTEN IN THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES

CHAPTER 8 VERSES 14-17:

When the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of

God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them

that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon

any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then

Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD THANKS BE TO GOD

THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO ST LUKE

CHAPTER 3 BEGINNING AT THE 15TH VERSE:

In the wilderness John proclaimed a baptism of repentance. As the people were

filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John,

whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, ‘I

baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not

worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit

and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-

floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will

burn with unquenchable fire.’ Now when all the people were

baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,

the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him

in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son,

the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

NEW BEGINNINGS: January is a month of new beginnings—

new year, new diary, new resolutions, new school etc. New things

can be exciting and full of possibility, but can also mean

uncertainty or apprehension.

Today we celebrate the Baptism of Christ, when Jesus is filled with the Holy Spirit.

Each one of us is filled with the Spirit at our baptism—as the children will be this

morning. The Spirit who guides and comforts, but also disturbs and challenges. As

we start this new year, I would encourage you to find some time, to sit quietly

before God and ask his Spirit to speak to your hearts. Is there something new—in

thought or deed—that Christ is calling you to this year? We should be ready at any

moment to respond to his call, which may mean taking on a new challenge or

embracing a new way of thinking about things, which in turn may lead to a new way

of doing things. Listen to the voice of the Spirit and be ready for the unexpected.

It may be exciting, it may be unsettling, but if it’s a call from God, we will always

be given what we need to follow that call.

Here I am Lord, is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go Lord, if You lead me, I will hold Your people in my heart.
