Living the Paschal Mystery
Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 13 & 14 2016
None of us chooses to live our discipleship for its shock
value! We are, however, always faced with such conse-
quential choices. We are hardly called like Jeremiah to
announce to the Israelites that their beloved Jerusalem
will fall into the hands of the Babylonians—nor are we
thrown into a cistern to die! Nor like Jesus will we be
nailed to a cross because of our preaching. Neverthe-
less, we are called to be faithful to God’s word in the
small, everyday things as well as at times when the
more serious challenges come along. We do not seek
division, but we do suffer with Christ when it comes.
The closer we come to Christ, the hotter the fire be-
comes! The very way we live our lives is Gospel fire.
Sometimes strife and division are a sign of our faithful
commitment. Gospel living is not always easy! The
real shock is that we choose it and are faithful.

Congratulations to the following children and their
families who were baptized this past week at St. Mar-
garet of Scotland Church.

Social Justice Reflection
August 14 – 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“True freedom, freedom worthy of the sons of God, is that
freedom which most truly safeguards the dignity of the hu-
man person. It is stronger than any violence or injustice. Such
is the freedom which has always been desired by the Church,
and which she holds most dear. It is the sort of freedom
which the Apostles resolutely claimed for themselves. The
apologists defended it in their writings; thousands of martyrs
consecrated it with their blood.”
Pope Leo XIII, encyclical letter "Libertas praestantissimum”

In the Gospel this week, Jesus tells his disciples “I have
come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were
already blazing.” He reminds us that our journey will not be easy –
that we will experience discomfort and anguish. The decision to do
what is right, and being able to carry out the decision, is not always
easy. Bring It Home by discussing a decision or choice you made to
be a Christian witness? Place a religious symbol in the center of
your table or refrigerator, or place something small in your pocket,
to remind you to make those difficult decisions as Christ would.
