T hird Sunday in /Ordinary Time

Mail ing address: 1315 1st Ave.

So. Sioux City, NE 68776

Dear parishioners,

This weekend, we obey Pope Francis’s call to acknowledge the 3rd Sun-day of Ordinary Time as “The Sunday of the Word of God.” While there

are no other changes to our readings or liturgy, we use this Sunday to remember the important position of the Word of God, the Sacred Scrip-

tures, in our lives as Catholics.

As Catholics, we believe that all of the books of Scripture have a com-mon author in the Holy Spirit. They were written by various human authors at different times with various intentions, but the Church has

discerned over the centuries that all were inspired by the Holy Spirit and are linked together with the common message of God’s love for us and His plan for our salvation in His Son Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus is prophesied and foreshadowed in all of the books of the Old Testament in the narratives of God’s ongoing relationship with His chosen people,

the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and in the words of the prophets and in the wisdom literature. The Gospels relate the experience of the Apostles and other disciples in encountering the Word made flesh in Jesus Christ, as well as relaying to future Christians His saving deeds

and His teachings. The Acts of the Apostles, the various letters of the Apostles, and the book of Revelation show and teach us what the Chris-

tian life looks like.

We as Catholics have the opportunity to encounter Scripture in union with our fellow Catholics throughout the world in its daily use in the

liturgy of the Church, particularly in Mass. It is good for us to read the daily Scriptures (perhaps using a periodical such as Magnificat or The Word Among Us, or an app like iBreviary) to be guided by God day to day even if we cannot attend daily Mass. The Second Vatican Council gave us a greatly-expanded number of different readings to experience over the course of the 3-year Sunday cycle and the 2-year daily cycle. We believe that the Scriptures are not just books written thousands of

years ago detailing the events of those ancient times, but rather a living Word through which the Holy Spirit speaks to us in 2020 as a Church

and as individuals.

How do we know what God is saying to us through the Scriptures as we read and pray with them? Our first guide is the Church’s deposit of the

faith, what she has always taught in terms of faith and morals. Any inter-pretation we have that seems to contradict those teachings of Christ and

the Spirit are obviously very wrong. Beyond that, we pray, we listen, and we test the spirits. Anything that comes into our mind and heart that discourages us is not from God. We may, however, find calls to conver-sion in some aspects of our lives, to have a greater confidence in God’s love for us, and give our lives more fully over to Him. Most of all, our reading and prayer with Scriptures ought to lead us to a stronger rela-tionship with Christ and with God – to live more fully the very reason

we were created.

We hear in today’s Gospel how Jesus began His ministry in the tribal lands of Zebulun and Naftali, in the Galilean north of Israel near its

borders with pagan Lebanon. These northern lands had been separated from Judea, along with eight of the other tribes, during the reign of King

Rehoboam, the son of King Solomon, and had thereafter practiced a religion which was a blasphemous combination of Judaism with the neighboring pagan religions. Thus angering God, the northern tribes

were conquered a few hundred years later by the Assyrians and largely scattered to the four winds, which is why we speak of “the lost tribes of Israel.” The people who lived in Zebulun and Naftali in Jesus’ time were

Jews, but considered to be weak in that identity, both religiously and culturally, by the people of Judea in the south. Furthermore, bordering

the pagan lands, they were seen as more susceptible to the influences of those peoples, living under their shadow, as it were.

Jesus brings to these people first the “great light” of His person and His ministry. He goes first to the “lost sheep” of the house of Israel before ministering to the full-fledged Jews of the south. He calls poor fisher-men to be His closest disciples. Their alacrity in leaving everything to follow Him probably has much to do with His role as a great rabbi (as

they would have seen Him at this point) reaching out to them when oth-ers who seemed much more qualified or closer to God may have been

available.

Jesus’ choices highlight God’s preoccupation with those most in need of rescue and salvation. It brings to our attention our call as parishioners of St. Michael’s in South Sioux City not to write off any of our neighbors, but always to seek to bring them the light and good news of Christ as

best we can. Jesus doesn’t just love people who are far from Him, espe-cially those who were baptized Catholic and have fallen away, “too,” He

loves them preferentially. He calls upon us to share in that love and to allow the Holy Spirit to work through us, in works of spiritual and cor-

poral mercy, to draw them closer to Him. We pray for a strengthening in our sense of responsibility to proclaim and share the Gospel of Christ

with all of our neighbors most in need of His love and His hope.

This coming week is Catholic Schools Week. We at St. Michael’s are very proud of our school, which does so well in its mission of providing a faith-based education and giving our students a good start in traveling the right paths of life and living in Christ who is the way, the truth, and the life. As the students, faculty, staff, and school families celebrate this great treasure, I want to remind all the families of the parish that, in the United States and particularly at St. Michael’s, a Catholic education is not just for the rich. There are many forms of financial aid to make it

possible for you to make an investment in your children’s knowledge of and perseverance in the faith. My experience is that Catholic education does not guarantee that a young person will keep the faith into adult-

hood, but it sure gives them far more knowledge, tools, and formation to do so. Our school has very much the atmosphere of being a family and providing a positive environment for children while being able to form them in faith in the classroom. I would love for many more families in our parish to chose St. Michael’s School and to give that gift to their

children.

As announced at the Masses last weekend, we have hired Mrs. Zulema (Nuño) Jones as our Parish Coordinator on a part-time basis. Zulema

will perform the duties of this job while continuing to teach in the school for the rest of this semester and doing her student teaching for her teach-ing bachelor’s degree this fall, presumably returning to St. Michael’s as a teacher next spring. I had never considered the idea of hiring a parish coordinator on a part-time basis until Zulema and our principal, Mrs. Sandy Williams, broached the idea to me. Zulema will be working as

coordinator for about 15-23 hours a week, with perhaps longer hours in the summertime as we gear up for our parish capital campaign.

This is an ideal solution to parish needs right now for several reasons: 1) our two part-time secretaries are doing an excellent job of handling the door traffic of the office and the basics of the secretarial work that used

to be a big part of the parish coordinator job, 2) consequently, the parish coordinator position does not need to be full-time, 3) we do in fact very much need a coordinator to shore up our recent challenges in communication, organization, and planning in the parish, 4) being able to hire a coordinator on a part-time basis as

opposed to full-time is a tremendous help to the parish as we move toward getting back on our feet financially, and most im-

portantly, 5) Zulema, having been our parish secretary in the past and working with great energy, responsibility, and dedication,

has already proven her abilities to carry out this work as well as meeting new challenges. Zulema begins her work on a full-

fledged basis on Feb. 1. I have every confidence in her to do the work well, and am very excited about the hire and what it means

for the future of St. Michael Church as we embark upon this year.
